I have recently bought an S5 from straight talk. It uses Verizon towers. It came with 6.0.1 marshmallow.
Model-sm-s903vl
Baseband-s903vludu4aph3
Kernel version-3.4.0-8867563

Build number-mmb29m.s903vludu4aph3
Cid-11xxxxxxxxxx
Android security patch level-August 1 2016
I'm having issues obtaining root on this device. I'm not sure if the bootloader comes unlocked or not. I tried kingroot, iroot, framaroot and few others. None have succeeded. I even tried the chainfire method in Odin and it fails every time. I've read downgrading is an option but from my understanding is that on a locked bootloader you can't downgrade. Attempt to ends in a hard brick. So correct me if I'm wrong. So after all is said anyone know how to root this thing? It's becoming quite frustrating.
anyone???
Bump

bump this phone is so locked down...
from what I hear. A member here is working on the testing firmware. From my understanding, it's the firmware that was first put on this model to do testing and it runs 4.4 Kit Kat. The problems in it is a whole load of things including no cellular service. I think they have all things but contacts working correctly so far. Oh and best part is your able to root on the test firmware but people need those bugs worked out to have a stable usable phone. I tried things more simple like the Kit Kat firmware from the sm-902l model. It's still an s5 that runs on straight talk but different model numbers obviously and it runs 4.4. So I thought give it a try but Odin fails it every time
Any update on rooting the phone?

No update on the 6.0. Just downgrade and root. Follow my thread

Hello
So firstly look at the image i attached....
Now i want to know if it is possible to root this phone and install CM12 or another custom rom or even an official lollipop rom that i will receive updates on ?
Thanks in advance
It looks to me like you have a Verizon S5, although the model number states otherwise and the DONGCHAO.617 build number seems custom. You do have a Verizon S5 though, so you can root on NCG, which you are running, through towelroot. However, ROMs like CM12 can't be installed without an unlocked bootloader, which is impossible currently on the VZ S5. You can get a Lollipop ROM with root by following these instructions.

What you're currently running is not official. The build number isn't official, anyway, so it won't get the lollipop update. The firmware that I'm telling you about can be updated, but I'm not 100% sure about the ROM.
Ok Thank you I will give it a try either today or tomorrow cheers for the info
very similar issue
Good day,
I have a similar issue with phone bought in china (dong chao)
However my extra problem is low wifi signal (smart switch off).
just updated to 6.01 verizon and the issue persisits. It is very strange as the phone seemed to be verizon but labeled as 900F...
very strange...
Any recommendations ? thank you
I've found root methods for previous versions of lollipop for the AT&T variant S5 Active but it seems to me that there may not be a method for the most up to date firmware. Has anyone successfully rooted the S5 Active on OF3 firmware? If so please enlighten me!
I've been searching for a few weeks now. While out of town, I found a tweet for srsroot that said OF3 IS now supported. However, I have not tried it yet.
The tweet went a little something like this: #SRSRoot: samsung SAMSUNG-SM-G870A (Build: LRX21T.G870AUCU2BOF3) #Android 5.0 Now Supported...
I hope it's real; I'm going to try it tonight. Good luck
Tell me how that goes, and send me a link to it after! Thanks clubfalco
I tried it out and it said the root was successful, but I still don't have root privileges. I'm going to try it again to make sure there isn't something I'm missing. If I can get it to work I'll send the link.
I tried srsroot as well to no avail. Tried two separate times and it said root successful, but after installing SuperSU and superuser (separately) no root... I'll keep trying I suppose. Happy with the phone regardless
I'm bookmarking this to keep abreast. I've been impatiently waiting for somebody to fix this problem. I love my AT&T S5 Active, but it is in need of warranty replacement. Nothing that hinders the phone function too much, but I want it fixed eventually. However if I send it in they will give me a Lollipop build (OF3). Mine currently runs 4.4.4. I don't care about 5.0. I just need my root. If I could get a KitKat replacement I would.
I can't send it in for replacement until somebody figures this out.
You could contact Samsung and see if there is any way for them to make sure you're sent a replacement without the latest update. Also, as you may already know, make sure you unroot and make it so you will be able to get the replacement. Warranties are typically voided with root... Good luck! I will keep this thread updated if I find a fix.
New to rooting - last phone was done successfully and golden - this new phone, not so much - any luck
I've been looking for a few weeks and haven't found a way to root my S5 Active. I'm running OF3 and nothing seems to work. KingRoot KingoRoot SRSRoot all the ones that come up with S5 and S5 active. Has anyone figured this out get? Using Odin to downgrade to AFE 5.0 gives a fused binary error for SW check so I'm stuck on 5.0 >
Is there still no method to root a S5 active on Android 5.0 at&t stuff drive me mad, I'm not on a contract just want the phone without junk on it.
Many thanks
I ordered the AT&T unlocked S5 Active off Swappa from a seller that resells phones from corporate usage. It came with 4.4.2 and some modifications that lead me to believe the company does did not permit upgrades. That said, it was hell to get MTP working on it and it did not read any microSD cards (yes I troubleshot plenty). They offered to replace it and so I have a Verizon S5 (not Active) on the way instead, as I'm hoping for more official upgrade support (Marshmallow this month??).
Aaanyway, regarding root, updates, tips/tricks, etc, any suggestions?
I'm coming from the AT&T Moto X 2013 but have a good deal of experience with roots, mods, etc.

Honestly, it's a very easy procedure I was hunting and hunting when I got mine (about a month ago) so I've done plenty of research.
Mine had 4.4.2 on it as well. There is a downgrade process which is fairly simple and straightforward. It requires using Odin. I also followed a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/tut-root-tripping-knox-t2803951 which helped me a lot. I also read that towelroot isn't working, so I found one set of tools which has towelroot plus v2 and v3. v3 worked for me the second time. Try googling some stuff, there is tons of information, I'm looking for a good ROM or at least a pre-rooted updated stock ROM. I have version 0A8, which is the first OTA lollipop update. I'm looking for a ROM based off of lollipop there are tons based on kitkat kernel thou. CM is working on I think 12.1 So I may downgrade again because the downside to having Verizon lollipop installed, TWRP will no longer work. Stay with kitkat, install TWRP, and go from there, think I'm going back to kitkat to find a decent ROM, I like having recovery. Hope I helped a bit

Helped a ton I was thinking of sticking with the Active so I wouldn't need a case, but with all the development here, I'm glad I switched. And the Verizon model seems to be doing better than the AT&T one in terms of OTAs.
I was on a 4.4.4 for a long time as OTAs lock bootloaders.
I am happily rooted on 5.0 running a TW stock rooted ROM.
Beware of OTAs..... they can kill you. LP is Def better!

i have been searching for weeks now for a way to root my G935P on QH1 firmware and cant seem to find anything that works. Am i missing something or is there currently no way to root on this firmware? I have tried almost every root method for the G935P and every one of them bootloops my phone, and i think its because they are for older firmwares and its not letting me flash older firmware.
One method that looked promising was to flash U firmware, but i tried this too and it didnt work, dont know if im doing something wrong or if U firmware is not able to be installed after ive updated to this latest QH1 firmware.
RIght now im kind of kicking myself for installing this latest system update, but one of the root methods i tried that was one of the steps was to go to system update and let it update to the latest firmware and now it seems as if im stuck here with no way to root
I'm in the same boat, I recently just upgraded from the Note 3 (brother gave me his S7E). I'm not new to rooting, but its definitely not as easy as it used to be.

Not worth rooting this phone. The method is extremely unstable. Any reason why you need to root? There could be a non root workaround

Same here. The bootloops is crazy! I have rooted the tmobile and verizon versions before with no issues. I was begining to think the Qualcomm boot file was bad. But it appears it's with the sprint s7 edge.

Not unstable at all.. I have mine rooted for a long time. It's fast and works just fine... If you follow the steps in order, then you should have no problems at all... This is the simplest method of all.

So im wanting to finally root and flash my phone after having it for almost a year, tired of all the VZW updates, prompts and just general bloat. So i did some digging and samfail only works up to V5 bootloaders.. my phone baseband is g955usqu5crk1 and i cant find any info on it and i dont want to try to do samfail and brick my phone due to it not being compatible. Does anyone have any info on this version or know what i can do from this point?.

I am not sure, but I think you can still root. Check the ROM section here in the Verizon Forum and look for JRKRuse thread. Or, look in the S8 Plus Forum under ROMs and look for the Partcyborg thread. I think with the S8 plus you can still root V5, but check with the experts before you start down any path.
The 5 near the end is bootloader version 5, the C means Oreo
Im on the same baseband version and have been trying samfail method all night, as well as different odin versions, i either get sha256 error on first step or else it hangs for way too long
I believe there's a patched Odin which helps with the errors you're describing. Google (patched Odin 3.13.1). It combines features from the Odin variant (Prince Comsey Odin) which eliminates such issues.
