I have S7 Edge with Tmobile and got the Nougat update a few days ago. Since that time, the text shortcuts for the samsung default keyboard stopped working and I'm unable to [figure out how to] change the default keyboard from Samsung to Gboard. I've done this in the past without problem.
I can't find any way to change the default keyboard, just change the prefs for the mult keyboards I have installed. I can't find any instrux on line for Nougat, just past versions...like this https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-30243

If you go to Settings > General Management > Language and Input > Virtual Keyboard > GBoard, Select 'Advanced' option then enable 'Show app icon'. Go to launcher and open the GBoard app, it will allow you to set as default.
Pull down notification screen (panel) while having Samsung keyboard on screen, somehow keyboard selection is done on notifications screen... :silly:

THANK YOU! At first I couldn't find it for a few moments, but I had to scroll to the VERY BOTTOM of the Notification Tray.
That is by far the silliest way to change the default keyboard . You should logically be able to do this directly from the regular Language and Input settings, but it was buried under a place I would have never logically thought to look (and with the keyboard on screen at the same time at that!).
I'm sure this is a Samsung-specific thing. Starting to really dislike how much Samsung modifies the OS + all of the junk/crapware it puts on your device that you can't remove (unless you're a tech pro who knows how to root the thing)..
Thanks so much!!!!
No one else solved this for me!!! You are a star. So appreciated.

Sometimes the notification does not show up in the notification tray after enabling gboard under "manage keyboards". If this happens to you, try opening the gboard app from the app tray, and it will give you the option to select gboard. This only works after gboard is enabled under "manage keyboards", otherwise the app prompts you to go to settings.

yep, go to the settings tab of Sense and then to the adjustments (the one where you can change the background, tab order etc). At the end you will see Haptic feedback/vibration. Click on that one and untick. Ready
I have sense switched off..so I can't do it that way...I'm running MS 3.5.1
any other ideas?
thank you
been searching and seaching but not found it yet..
I'm more concerned about battery life of using the vibration motor everytime I'm pressing the screen. I hope the only option isn't to hard reset and go back to Sense (I've tried diabling MS and running sense but I can't get it to run)

Try settings - personal, then input. Then turn to touch input and in options you will find "vibrate when keys are pressed" box. Unclick it that should be it.
And go to settings, then personal, then touch flo and unclick the box.
This is it.

or
Turn off the vibration of the keyboard as folow:
1. start using the keyboard
2. click to the small icon next to the keyboard icon
3. Select Touch Input
4. Options...
5. Click to Options... on the Input Method (is not visible on the default keyboeard)
6. de-check "Vibrate when keys are pressed"
Hey - thanx for the explanation... I just turned off mine
sanchenzu thank you so much
Hello,
I did try all the above methods: everything is set to off (in settings tab of the Sense, in Advanced settings for Phone, etc) - still the keyboard is vibrating when used.
When using keyboard and pressing the small arrow to select the type of keyboard, I only have Phone, Compact and Full kbds; there is no Options menu, only Text Input Settings that takes me to the default Manila options tab for text input - but in this there is no vibration option (only Symbol lock, Typing sound, Spell correction, Word completion XT9 and Word completion ABC).
Any other idea?
+1 to above.
I have the same items in the menu.
I think it must be stored somewhere in the registry. I searched the registry for "Vibrate" string and the only place I could find one is:
HKLM\Software\OEM\KeyState but there are several values with "Vibrate" string and I don't know which one should I turned off. I don't want to mess anything...
Surprisingly enough I could not find this issue when using the search function. (maybe it is my search capabilities )
Just started using my S5 last week. Now when I touch the home button I get the message to use touchwiz-start.
When I press always (picture says "altijd") it looks like it does not safe this default.

It works for an hour or so, and then it is reset so I get this message again when I press the home button.
Searching for this it looks like a lot of people have this issue, but I do not see a working resolution.

Give this a try
Settings > Applications > Application Manager scroll across the screen to All, then scroll down to Touchwiz, you will see Touchwiz Home Easy and Touchwiz Home, check in both apps and if the options are not grayed out tap clear Cache and Clear Defaults, don’t clear Data as that will wipe home screen shortcuts and set up.
Press the back button to get to your Settings > Application screen and tap Default Applications then tap Home and Select Touchwiz Home, once selected press the back button twice to get to the Settings > Application screen then press and hold the Power button and select Restart.
If its cleared all the default data and reset it then your phone should boot into the default Touchwiz home screen, this should work, if it doesn’t then you have an app or something that is causing it so look at what you have updated or installed recently.

Well actually this triggered me to analyse some recent updates I did, and then I saw one app where somebody reported that it was trying to install itself as a touchwizz app. I deinstalled it et voila, problem solved.
I notified the creator of the app that the recent update he delivered is causing this problem.
So thanks for your input, it triggered me to look a bit deeper into the installed apps and solve this problem.

Has anyone seen an app or mod that removes the change keyboard button from the nav bar when typing?... or moves it to the left side?
No luck with searching but the terms are generic enough that I had so many results, maybe I missed something.

Three things:
1. It only shows up when your keyboard is out, in case that's not obvious.
2. Do you have a keyboard installed aside from the stock keyboard?
3. What ROM? I'm on stock.

I never paid attention to that, thanks!
Gravitybox has this option. It's called "Remove IME Switcher" or something like that uncer Navbar options.
I got rid of mine too, since my back button is on the right and I always accidentally hit the keyboard switch button instead.
You'll need xposed framework though.
Go to Settings --> Language and input --> The under "Keyboard and input methods" click on "Current Keyboard" if you look on the right hand side you will see you have more than one language or input method selected just uncheck them until you have just one option. This should solve your problem.

You cannot turn off the stock keyboard, though I suppose I could freeze it via Titanium or something as a last resort.
You can also disable the keyboard and doesn't require root and solves your issue.

You don't need to turn off or disable the stock keyboard. Please review this screencast of what I'm referring to.

You only have the Google keyboard. If you install another, that won't work... But yeah, I guess just disabling/freezing is the solution.
Hi, I've read the manual but haven't found what I needed.
I'm trying to delete the Google Now screen that's left of the Home screen and then add something else. I can disable Google Now in APPS and get rid of the Google Now pane, but I can't seem to delete it. Without deleting Google Now I can't add my own pane to the left of the Home screen.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
I'm pretty sure that is a feature of the Xperia Launcher that comes with the phone. If you want your home screen to behave differently I'd recommend getting a different launcher from the play store. I personally use Nova Launcher, but there are tons of good ones out there.
UPDATE: Check post after mine for answer.

Then you'll need to downgrade your xperia launcher to one without that feature. Apk mirror under Sony mobile communications they have all Sony's stock apps listed

You can turn the Google now pane off by long pressing on the home screen, then settings bottom right, then turn the relevant slider off. (You can't do it via the regular settings, only the settings that you get to from long pressing the home screen!)
Usually, long-press is for selecting text, but on this Xperia it's popping up with a magnifying glass instead. Is there any way to turn this off?

I haven't found that to be the case. Usually long-press on Internet page selects text. You might be experiencing a function built in to a specific app...
Xichael talks about this. When you select text in your input there is a zoom.

Yes, mine is like that, but round. An easy place to try it is in Chrome's address bar.
EDIT: Actually, I get the rectangular one too. They seem to take over in any text input field.

It's not linked to an app. If you write a text somewhere and try to select it, the zoom will appear
Magnifier is useful for selecting special place for cursor on small screen. It's a feature on fields that can be edited/written in.
If you want to select a word, use double-tap.
I use Gboard's space bar swiping feature to reposition the cursor. Really hope there's a way to disable this. It makes selecting text inconsistent, and I truly have no need for it.
Settings > Accessibility > Magnification
Disable
I don't have that option. There's something called "magnification gesture", but it's already turned off.

Which version of Android are you using on your X Compact? Nougat has the magnification bubble when editing text but this seems to have been removed in Oreo.

Which phone is that? I only know of iPhones, Xperia's, Asus Zenfone and some early HTC phones having the magnification bubble to edit text. Shame more phones don't have it, it's very useful.
