Enable tethering through build.prop issues - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

So recently... I have tried to enable tethering through editing the build.prop. Upon reboot... My camera app stops working and 3rd party camera apps become buggy if I try to replace the stock app.
I am using the "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" technique.... And changing nothing else. Has anyone else run into this issue or does anyone have a fix.
Issue specifics:
- Happens no matter on stock ROM rooted or custom ROM (currently on resurrection remix)
- flashlight will also stop working until I edit quick menu icons and then it works.
- I have tried wiping cache and formatting.
- tried rebooting
- tried backing up build.prop and restoring it... Issue still stays.
- for awhile I was using elementalx kernel... But the problem still seems to stay on Ex or stock kernel.
- happens on both android 6.0.1 and 7.1.1 ( 7.1.1 currently used)
- moto g4 xt1625 (non-amazon) Athens retus phone model
Any thoughts or fixes?
Thanks

Sorry to double post... But I had a separate thought...
Is there any reason to believe that editing the build.prop outside of Android OS on a Windows PC then remounting it.... Would fix the problem? It doesn't seem to make logical sense that it would help, but at this point I'm grasping at straws.
Thanks

I had the same exact problem, and tried many of things you tried without success. I finally tried the solution on another site and it fixed all the problems. After I tried it, I realized it was probably a permission issue on build.prop.
I'm not allowed to post the link of the site. However, long story short, try changing the permissions of build.prop by using chmod 644 build.prop, or change build.prop to -rw-r--r-- .

WiFi issues Unable to turn on/unable to scan for networks

Hello, I'm having an issue, I'm rooted with the nand unlock method. I was on flipz .1d but have now moved to .2. I've had this issue a number of times now specificly the "unable to turn on" which seems to be caused by the owner of the /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf file changing to root. but I am not sure what causes the unable to scan for networks to happen.
Some of the things I have done that seem to be a part of the cause: I ran flipz vanilla lock screen fix and I team douche menu unlock, both seem to make changes to /system/framework/
anyone that might know where to look to fix the scan issue? I've searched the forum and have seen a few people have the problem but no solutions yet.
Was having the same problem (came across your post from a Google search).
I got a hint from code.google.com (can't post the link). I renamed the /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf to /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.bak (rather than delete it), rebooted and all is well.
Seems you can just delete the file, and it'll be respawned on a reboot.
I am having this problem, but on a vibrant that has not been rooted yet.
I cant seem to find the wpa_supplicant.conf, I have tried browsing for it using the built in file manager and using ASTRO, but the data directory is always empty.
Is there a way to fix this without rooting the phone?
if your phone has not been rooted then that means your phone is f**ked up and might need to be exchanged. but this is the evo forum not vibrant. the only way to mess with system files is to be rooted
Appreciate info*, worked in a heartbeat, saved from reloading everything from scratch, which was my way out last time. Witstech A81E Froyo 2.2
*renamed the /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf to /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.bak
Good eye there mate!!!!

It just recreates the file when your phone gets rebooted. My Thunderbolt is having the EXACT same issue. Ive tried renaming this and deleting as well and still no luck. Im now kicking over any rocks that I can find to get my wifi working.
I have exactly the same problem.
With Root Explorer deleted the file 'wpa_supplicant.conf' but no changes.
WiFi starts up and closes down again with the famous line: "unable to scan for networks"
anyone?

I had the same problem. I installed the software from the sony erikcon website to my computer, and then followed the process for updating the phone software. That did not work, since I had the latest software already. So then, I tried to REPAIR my phone software, and after that was done, my phone was functional again, and the wifi works without any problems.
Requirements:
* A PC connected to the Internet (preferably broadband)
* USB phone-to-PC connection. Please see the accessories compatibility list for your phone.
1. Run the software on the computer after it is installed.
2. Follow the procedure for UPDATE or REPAIR (if you already have the latest version).

[Q] No phone-network after ICS CM9

Hi,
I've used CM7 and CM9 before with no major problem. But probably did something wrong because after flashing couple of ICS ROMs my phone (Defy-red lens) became unusable with 2 problems:
- no mobile network connection (no phone-calls, no SMS, no 2/3G)
(Wifi and Bluetooth are OK)
- it does not save the setup, each boot is a new phone with new configuration setup.
I've tried different ROMs (CM9, Quarx, Skanky, etc) with different Kernels (7 & 9), but nothing seems to change this behavior.
The phone also doesn't recognize the IMEI and can't search of operators. I've attached some screeshots.
I was wondering if someone else could share their experience with me or, somehow try to help me. I'm willing to try out things....
Cheers.
You tried changing your baseband??
Sent from my Defy+ using Tapatalk 2
Baseband is not initialized/installed. In the first pic, it shows the baseband as 'unknown'. Select proper baseband matching your country from Baseband Switcher (settings -> Advanced->Baseband Switcher) and reboot your phone.

Baseband is by default on Europe > Central Europe > 3.4x 900/2100 MHz which is not right for me. Should be America > Brasil > TIM 3.4.2-107-9 850/2100 Mhz.
The problem is, as I mentioned, that the phone does not save any settings. After the reboot the Baseband comes back to the default setting.
I already did the wipe factory/reset, wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache many times before/after flashing a ROM (and event deleted the dalvik cache folder via terminal emulator since it wasn't asking for confirmation when deleting via cwm) but didn't really change anything...
Any idea what's leading to the settings not being saved?
Thank you for helping.
PS: I didn't play with partitions, but as I've read in this post, of a similar problem, that this might be the case, I'll post the screenshot of the command df just in case...

try BBs_v4

Thanks. I was able to change the baseband with this app (and somehow keep this setting after a reboot - see screenshots), but under "About phone" still shows as Baseband version Unknown. And I still have no network signal...
Meanwhile... the matter with partitions and settings lost after reboot:
I know a litte of Linux, but I don't understand Android's structure or how it deals with partitions, but I might have found something:

As I see that in the system there are others blocks with similar names (screenshots in post #4), I was wondering if this might be related to the problem I'm dealing with (loosing settings after reboot).
I see some people had problems with this block/partition, for instance in this post - Issue with /dev/block/mmcblk1p25, but I couldn't figure out how they fixed.
Any help is much appreciated.
Hi fbugnon,
I have the same problem on my Defy. I've tried to use 2 differents builds from wdscript.fr (120613 and 120610), installed baseband switcher, but the problem is the same as yours.
Everytime the phone restarts, it resets all settings.
I'm trying to use a build from quarx (quarx2k.ru, build 120305) now, let's see if that helps.
I'll keep you updated.
Hi tiagomelo,
I've tried many differents ROMs but no one was able to change this behavior. I'm not sure, but I believe the problem is related to the partition error mentioned on my last post -- do you also have the same problem?
I was forced, eventually, to do a full SBF with Tim's original system so that I could use my phone and now I'm using CM 7.2 rc3.... Waiting for ICS to solve the calendar sync bug which is crucial for my work and then I'm back on.
Wish you good luck! And please keep us posted, I would like to know where this will lead you to.
Cheers

What ROM are you using? Your build version. And is the problem exactly as described in OP, then I see that its been resolved.
A bit same like yours
Guys i dont know if if i can help you over here but i was some issues with the call/data/3g ... for me as soon as i tried using them they froze completely, not the phone but the signals .. its was related to my baseband settings and stuff,
so i found a solution for this ...
go into recovery cpu settings,
Status: enable
Enable all modules
Scaling: Conservative
dont forget to save at bottom and reboot
if these settings worked for you then it should be alright
This is just a suggestion to the issue .. u can try it .. I don't know if it is %100...
for me it works

That's a different thing. The reason for your freeze would be something with your CPU/chipset.
Good to see someone who is familiar with this issue of mine ..
so would u b able to tell me why i was having this problem with the chipset/cpu related to calls and data download ...
i know its not the right thread but i tried other thread but no answers yet
i came across this solution after a lot of seaching .. trial n error
u dont know what i've been through ... but using this settings doesnt give me good downloading speed in google play though

Hi Ajitnegi,
As mentioned before, the only solution I could find to this problem was restoring the orignal ROM (Motorola's) by doing what they call a full SBF (you can read a bit about sbf in here or in posts on this forum).
Sorry not being able to help any further. Good luck.
Cheers.
Same problem | No network connection
Hi
I am also facing the same problem, no network connection. After going through this post where you had asked to change the baseband settings to the country specific, I did change it. Unfortunately, even after changing the baseband settings, after reboot it changes to default value (.i.e. Central Europe).
While going through this forum, I could not find any final settings provided by the developer, did you get any ? If so, can you point out to it.
Thanks,
Nash

Hi Ajitnegi
I don't know if this is the only way to fix it, but In order to recover MY phone I had to flash a full SBF, which is -- as I understand -- basically a Motorola Recovery that works pretty much like a factory reset. Search the forum and I'm sure you'll find someone explaining how to do it.
Or if you rather take some time to better understand what's going on with your phone before you start flashing it, you might want to take a look at this excellent "All-in-one Defy Beginner's Guide".
Cheers
i have the same issue, i have No Network and No Wifi
after flashing CM9 on my SGW from stock ROM
Help please .

[Q] [AOSP Lockscreens] Unable to change [SOLVED!]

UPDATE: I solved the problem by simply pushing the android.policy he provided in his thread, I still haven't figured out what was causing it. Well now the problem is solved.
Hi, after following d3cka's AOSP lockscreen guide, I managed to add everything succesfully without any compiling errors.
After pushing all of the needed files and rebooting the phone, I started up with the sliding lockscreen and I was like yay, it worked! But after going to Lidroid Parts and changing the lockscreen style, it didn't change.
So I'm stuck with just one lockscreen, doesn't matter if I set to Samsung, Rotary, etc, it just always stays the same lockscreen.
Tried signing both lidroid-res.apk, lidroidparts.apk as someone suggested in another thread, doesn't work.
Tried installing lidroidparts manually as an app, got it to appear in drawer, etc, but still it won't change the lockscreens.
Tried giving LidroidParts.apk rw-r--r-- permissions, doesn't help.
Tried leaving /system mounted as rw but that doesn't help aswell.
Has anyone had such issue? If so, please share how you solved it.

[Problem identified] CM 12.1 - Wifi connectivity VS mobile data priority problem

[Solution HERE: disable AFWall+-2.0-alpha2]
Hey there,
I installed the optimized CM12.1 20150602 with Xposed and Xprivacy and now I got a connectivity problem:
When I come back from flight mode or enter a known wifi, wlan0 connects to my local wifi but Internet still gets routed through mobile data (LTE).
ping rounter not possible
Wifi icon has a "!"
netcfg shows:
Code:
rmnet_usb0 UP 10.175.104.107/29 0x00000041
wlan0 UP 192.168.2.126/24 0x00001043
on turning off mobile data, wifi data starts working and keeps working when I turn mobile data back on
I tried with a clean system: no problem, added Xposed/Xprivacy: no problem. So I guess one of my apps with root access must have caused that bug.
Possible candidates: AFWall, AdAway, droid VNC, OpenVPN, OS Monitor, SSHDroid, Tasker, TB.
Anyone knows how to fix this? I guess it must be a problem of how and what gets prioritized.
The setup took me quite some time and it would be great if I could fix this without starting from scratch. Plus I'd like to know the source of the problem.
Log attached.
I run none of the apps you mention and have the same issue and it happens on all wireless networks. I know of two workarounds, if they can be called that.
First is to cycle WiFi from within settings. When I do that it normally works right for a few days after.
Second is to power cycle my wireless router. That normally only works for a day or so as well.
I personally feel this is a flaw in CM as I have also seen the exact same issue on CM and any ROM built from it.
FIX
I found a fix for my problem by trial and error:
First I dirtyflashed the system again which didn't help, so I thought the problem must be in /data... thats where wpa_supplicant.conf is located so I had a look at it and strangest thing was:
The priority numbers for high eventhough it had only three entries. I changed them to 1/2/3 and rebooted. After that automatic connection to wifi worked again. BUT:
I rechecked the
Code:
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
again and the priority was back to the old state: 41/47/38 - in this order for the only three networks.
So the fix for me was: Change priority and save. Reboot afterwards.
Can someone elaborate on how this could fix the problem?
Oh and I must revoke my solution. Didn't work on the other network. :/
OK next trial and fail: deleting wpa_supplicant so it gets renewed. No difference.
Maybe I just try to install a fresh install and just restore /data.
I tried deleting the whole /data/misc/wifi folder. Didnt fix it!
And now I even installed from scratch and restored /data only from backup. Didn't help either!
What do I have to remove to fix this???
Rule number 1 of the Optimized ROM: do not use Xposed if you want support. So, uninstall Xposed, make a logcat of your issue if uninstalling Xposed doesn't fix it, then send that to AntaresOne.
He doesn't read the threads in Q&A, and wouldn't reply to this one anyway because of Xposed.

Yes, thank you, I know that.
I didn't report a bug, I'm just trying to understand the problem, so I won't run into it again.
I tried tried a clean system and a clean system with Xposed and Xprivacy installed and did not have that problem, so I ruled that out.
Lucky for me: I did mention that in my OP.
My point is that you're presenting your information to the wrong audience. You need to post the logcat, without Xposed, on the Optimized CM12.1 thread, if you haven't already done so. That way the people who can actually do something about it can attempt to fix it.
I do apologize however for not reading the thread properly. It was late at night for me and I was half asleep. *sigh*
SOLUTION
So I hope it is fixed now.
My last resort was to flash a new modem/non-hlos.
I was on a 4.4.2 modems (DTM-I9505XXUGNG8_I9505DTMGNG3_I9505XXUGNG8_HOME.tar) before and updated to the latest modems for T-Mobile Germany: DTM-I9505XXUHOD5_I9505DTMHOD1_I9505XXUHOD5_HOME.tar.
This seemed to have solved my Wifi problem.
Step-by-step (no data loss but still: make a backup):
Check which is the latest ROM for your country/carrier on sammobile.com
Download ROM on sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com (no account necessary).
Extract ZIP > rename extracted *.tar.md5 to *.tar > extract modem and non-hlos file from *.tar with WinRAR or the likes.
Shutdown mobile and start into Download mode (Vol-Down)
Run Odin, disable Auto-restart and flash modem and reboot back into Download mode (I did that twice because people were hinting that but I doubt it's necessary).
Flash non-hlos in case you have a S4-LTE version.
Reboot and test.
/edit: didn't fix it.
Solved this time?
I think I finally found the problem: AFWall v2.0-alpha2 seems to cause the connectivity problem.
As soon as I deactivate the Firewall connection won't have any problems. I can't believe I needed so much time to find the bad boy.
Guess I didn't want to reduce security on my system, so I tried to avoid disabling/deleting my firewall.

Not familiar with your custom ROM but many people don't properly install custom ROMs
Did you FORMAT (not Wipe - it's completely different thing) Data partition (!) when you switched the ROM? If you didn't, you must do it
Assuming you had audio with the official MIUI (otherwise, you may have hardware issue)

UPDATE:
I've tried several custom ROMs now, also stock ROM. But no luck. How am I supposed to know if this is a hardware issue??
WHAT'S NOT WORKING:
- Built-in speakers
- Video recording
- Screen recording
- Voice recording
- Headphones/Earphones
- Bluetooth earphones/speakers
- No audio calls, no ringtones
- Unable to disable/enable mute button during call
- During call, speakers are enabled but cant be disabled (still no sound)
WHAT'S WORKING:
- Adjusting volume sliders
I'm not sure if this has something to do with hardware since I dont recall it falling, etc.. It suddenly stopped working at all.
There are codes that you dial and you can test all your hardware separately. It depends on rom, so you have to try

Otherwise, from TWRP, Advanced, File Manager (for e.g. build.prop file) go to /system and copy the file build.prop to /sdcard.
Reboot to Android, edit your copy of build.prop saved to Internal memory.
Reboot again to TWRP, mount System as writable, copy build.prop to e.g. build.bak and copy your edited build.prop from /sdcard to /system
If anyting goes wrong, reboot to TWRP, remove your build prop and rename your build.bak back to build.prop
You can also copy build prop from TWRP to PC, edit it there and copy back
Google for details if you are unfamiliar with, this is just general idea
If using TWRP, make sure you make a backup file (like build.bak) to be able to resolve possible brick or something
If using Magisk and that MHCP module, changes will be systemless (google if not familiar with the term) and you can simply disable the module (and automatically all your changes on props) if anything goes wrong
Generally, it's not for beginners to play with props

Thanks for explaining everything brother. Now I will do a research about editing audio or sound on build prop. Hopefully this is not a hardware issues.
Same issue encountered with me also. I am in a great distress right now. Tried more than 30+ roms (including recover, fastboot, custom, and stock), but nothing helps.
IF you find anything please update here.. THat'll be a great help indeed!!

UPDATE:
I've tried several custom ROMs now, also stock ROM. But no luck. How am I supposed to know if this is a hardware issue??
WHAT'S NOT WORKING:
- Built-in speakers
- Video recording
- Screen recording
- Voice recording
- Headphones/Earphones
- Bluetooth earphones/speakers
- No audio calls, no ringtones
- Unable to disable/enable mute button during call
- During call, speakers are enabled but cant be disabled (still no sound)
WHAT'S WORKING:
- Adjusting volume sliders
I'm not sure if this has something to do with hardware since I dont recall it falling, etc.. It suddenly stopped working at all.

If you r getting error while playing ringtone through settings then its your ui problem. You have to shift custom ui i recommend pixel UI or Oxygen os
