I'm on PN 7.1.1 on a release day model. Began after switching from stock Marshmallow to stock Nougat and stayed with me on a clean flash to PN. Sound gain kernel settings have been untouched.
I've been trying to pinpoint what the problem is exactly. The bottom speaker has no distortion and can produce sound. However, it's intermittent and refuses to stick. I don't believe it's a hardware issue.
Stereo tests will go mute no matter the orientation, but the moment you rotate the device, for approximately 4 secs the bottom speaker emits perfect sound.
I haven't found any recent discussions on this issue. Can anyone shed any knowledge?
Having the same issue. Would love a solution!

I've been having a weird audio issue with my Nexus 7 and was wondering if anyone else was having it. I search before starting this thread and couldn't find anything similar, which leads me to believe the answer is 'no', but thought I would ask anyway.
So my N7 was one of the first to be released. For a couple months I've had no major issues. A little screen lifting, but not enough to make me send it back. Some issues with the screen (what looks like burn in, but goes away) which has been heavily reported, but again, I can live with it. Both of those issues are well known and common, but this one just started up.
Every so often, when my N7 has been sitting idle and in standby mode for a while and I unlock it, I hear a "click" sound from the speaker. It normally makes that sound, but on occasion it sounds weird and clipped. When this happens, I lose audio. The only way to regain it is to either reboot the device, or manually lower the sound to zero, wait a few seconds, and then raise it up again. The latter method usually works, but once in a while I have to do it multiple times before the audio is restored. When the audio stops, it doesn't matter if it's the built in speakers or headphones - nothing.
This problem seems to only occur right after I wake it up. In other words, if I'm using it actively and I have sound, the sound works fine.
Again, this problem only started occurring about a month or so ago, and is only sporadic. At first, I thought it might have something to do with a new app I downloaded, but I eliminated that variable.
It's not a major problem, but it does get annoying every so often.
My N7 is stock firmware with a custom kernel (Motley) and rooted (obviously) with CWM recovery.
The logs don't indicate any issues. And since the audio comes back with me turning it off/on (usually), it seems more like a software issue.
Anyone else experiencing something similar?
Also, when the sound is working properly, it sounds great. No static or distortion or anything like that.
I have the same problem, at first i thought it was because of the kernels so i switch kernels from stock to motley then now i am on clemsyn. I do not know whether it is a software or hardware problem because my speakers sound perfectly alright, except the symptoms which you described.
My case is then sometimes when i unlock it, the normal click sound on unlock might be distorted and then for a period of time there will be no sound. The quick way to solve it is to plug in a headphone and then pull it back out, this will get the sound back immediately OR i can just wait for a while and the sound will be back. Again because of the speaker not having any other distortion during normal music playback, this might actually be a software problem, but it seems not many pple have documented this behaviour so hardware problem is also likely.

I think it could be a hardware defect with ours. Since you are the only other person to report the exact same symptoms, it seems to be rare. In my case, it occasionally happens even with the headphones in, so I don't think it's a speaker issue - more likely a sound card problem. If it was software, I think it would be much more commonly reported. Oh well.... Weird that it only started happening about a month or two after I owned it.
juz an update on my nexus 7 audio issue, i recently just flash franco kernel and the audio issue seemed to go away completely. i amnot sure whether its the overclocking or the undervolting that caused the problem but i am glad it is gone. Juz FYI.
I have a similar situation where the sound stops working randomly. It's rare, but maybe once a day. The volume buttons remain high but there is no sound. I have to reboot for the sound to come back. I am on Kaos Droid 3.8 Beta, with the Clemsyn Elite Battery Saving kernel.

I have had a white Z5 Compact for a week and have now noticed that the bottom speaker is much louder than the top, ruining the stereo effect. I am sure it did not come this way out of the box. I didn't notice until after the recent firmware update (32.0.A.6.152), but cannot know whether this is the cause of the problem. I went through the hassle of factory reset and the phone still has the problem. I haven't subjected the phone to any physical trauma at all and will be returning it.
I've had 4 (seeking a good camera) and the 3 that I tested this on were all like this.
Will almost certainly be "fixed" with custom roms in future.
Dont have this problem on 152
I have it the other way around, top speaker was soft first out of the box and after the update it seems to have fixed itself.
Problem seems to have fixed itself...
Weirdly, the speakers seem to be working fine now. Hope it's not a hardware issue.
Just out of curiosity, have you noticed any change with the different audio settings? Are they all off or do you have any of the DSEE HX, ClearAudio+, or Dynamic normalizer on? It may help to decide if it is hardware or software. One of the Audio settings codecs could be screwing with the volume and stereo effect.
I feel that the issue is software related. When I am on a call and switch it to Audio Output the bottom speaker is far louder than the top. I'm unsure if the top is putting out any sound at all really. But if I play a YouTube video or regular song, the stereo effect is playing equally from both top and bottom speakers. Not to mention talking on the phone normally is obviously through the top speaker and it works.
I did'nt have any of the Sony specific audio settings turned on. I ended up asking for an exchange - don't want to take the risk of it being hardware given it's international no warranty. Someone on another forum suggested perhaps I had gotten the phone wet, as that tends to muffle the speakers, but not the case - I have no intention of testing the waterproofness that Sony has backed away from
Update
I have experienced the problem on my exchange phone, but it is intermittent. Example: listening to Google Music after taking a phone call. I suspect it's software related - a sort of "mode" bug, where the phone was in one mode and is passing from another. Similar to how auto-brightness sometimes makes black colors look washed out when waking the phone.
Annoying but I like the phone enough that I'm keeping it. I just feel that if you like a compact phone (under 5" screen) - Sony's the only Android game in town.
I have a white international with the opposite. I watch YouTube with the phone at an angle to make it sound anything like it should..
So I just noticed the other day when watching a video that sound is only coming from the top speaker. Weird. I rebooted which seemed to have fixed the issue temporarily. I queued up another video about an hour later and sound came from the bottom speaker for about 2 seconds but then went out. I rebooted to twrp, cleared ART and system cache, tested again when booted back up and worked. However, a short time after successful test, the issue came back. I then decided to manually load the new April build hoping it would rewrite whatever audio drivers and fix permanently. Again, tested after reboot, worked fine but issue came back shortly after. I have not factory reset it and flashed the lasted build with wug's NRT in no wipe mode this time but the March build was a total clean install and was working fine until a few days ago.
Anyone experience anything like this? This is so weird. I downloaded a speaker tester app to test both left and right output which works totally fine when no videos or music play from the bottom speaker. I even cleared all the app cache hoping that might clear a corrupt file or something but I am out of ideas other than a factory reset and/or total clean install.
Update: While having the issue yesterday, I decided to run the left/right speaker test and the right speaker would work the majority of the time but sometimes, it wouldn't. No sound at all. Left (top) would always work. So I let it run the test for a few mins and the issue happened less and less until not at all. I have been testing randomly over the past 24 hours and now the right (bottom) speaker is again working consistently. What is the world could have caused this?? I thought maybe a loose or broken soldier connection so I looked at the ifixit teardown and that just doesn't seem possible. I also was intentionally flicking the front, back and edges of the phone with my finger to try to jostle it but nothing ever happened and it's still working consistently. So that rules out hardware and points to software. I never did a factory reset but I wonder if running that speaker test app for a little while straighted something out software wise? I also edited the speaker gains using es file explorer to lower the volume on the left (top) speaker after it had been working good for a while and I didn't see anything strange in the XML file so I just don't know.
Update 2: Issue just came back. Audio would work from bottom speaker and then fade out after a few seconds. I have now factory reset the phone, tested and is working now but will update if the issue returns.
There have been a few threads on this issue. I'm on the March release as I haven't flashed the April images yet. There is a YouTube video that was posted here on XDA that tested the audio of both speakers separately. I could definitely tell my bottom speaker was not as loud as my top speaker. Thanks to ElementalX kernel and EX manager app, I adjusted the bottom speaker volume by two levels and now they're both equal when I watch the video again. Hope this helped ya out.

My issue isn't just low volume, it's totally out. Weirdest issue I've encountered. So far after the FDR, the bottom speaker has been working consistently. I'll report back if issue comeß back where the sound is totally gone.
Odd problem I've had since starting to use Exodus 6... I don't know if it's a ROM problem, or something more general, as this is the first MM ROM i've used.
Device: D850
Currently running 20160419 nightly
(Clean flashed 20160416, but the factory reset didn't resolve the problem)
stock kernel.
The problem is that whenever i switch to speakerphone while on a call, the mic mutes itself and the person at the other end can't hear me. Turning the speaker off reenables the mic. I've recently noticed that the same occurs when i have the phone plugged in to my car audio through the 3.5mm jack. Sound outputs, but the mic is muted, so hands-free calling doesn't work, "OK Google" doesn't, voice-to-text for sending messages stops working, etc.
Anyone else run into this? Is there a fix? A way to start tracking down the problem, perhaps?
I had the same issue on cyanogen 13 with all the recent nightlies after some point in February. Could never narrow it down. I ditched cyanogen since and went back to stock rooted and I have no issues. I also had issues with speaker volume being extremely low.

Got my phone a few days ago. Unlocked the bootloader and flashed Resurrection Remix v5.8.4.
Camera is barely working (constant 'Could not connect to camera' error message), so I used Google Camera Instead (Panorama mode always out of focus, seems to be a common problem).
The touch screen has some problem recognizing touches near the top corners ( approx. 0.3 inch to the top). It's mentioned in another thread that EUI 20s fixed the problem but I'm not sure if the other custom ROMs contain the fix.
The bigger issue is I'm getting crackles/electrical noises while using the CDLA earphones with the screen on. It happens for a split of a second every few seconds and gets rather annoying. The relief at the moment is it does not occur when the screen is turned off. Audio is also fine when using the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter with normal headphones.
I'm wondering if this is a software issue (with RR?) or the earphone 's problem.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
I just plugged my CDLA headphones into my Pro 3 running omnirom and have the same issue (using Google play music app as a player). Minor clicks/crackles with the screen on. Must be something with this family of 7.1.x roms.
I am running the Resurrection Remix v5.8.4. and have the same problem hearing cracking noises randomly while talking on the phone or listening to music using the original LeEco CDLA OEM earphones. I think the audio driver of the Resurrection Remix v5.8.4. maybe causing the issue here. Hopefully will the Android 8.0 update with the new ROM would fix that.
Well, flash back to eUI. Still having those issues? If so, it sounds like a hardware issue. Maybe the ROM didn't flash correctly.
