Disk Encryption for Android Upgrade from Marshmallow to Nougat - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have a rooted device with OxygenOS 3.5.6 and I want to encrypt my device.
After some research on Internet I found that Android 6 and Android 7 have a different encryption methodologies
Android 6 -> Full Disk Encryption
https://source.android.com/security/encryption/full-disk.html#storing_the_encrypted_key
Android 7 -> FIle Based Encryption
https://source.android.com/security/encryption/file-based.html
Now, hopefully One-Plus team will release Oxygen base on Android 7, and I want to know if I can move from OxygenOS 3.5.6 (encrypted) to new OxygenOS (based on Nougat) without swipe my /data ?
Thanks,
Flavio

I guess that Full Disk Encryption method remains the same, but there is also option for File Based Encryption avaliable in Nougat so you should be fine.

I hope the same...

I remember that you only need latest twrp to use OOS encryption with "nougat" custom ROM

Hi @unicondor, hi @ all.
I was asking myself the same thing yesterday: "does the OnePlus 2 capable of File Base Encryption (FBE)?"
After some searches, all I could find is that this features is reserved to newest devices, such as Nexus 6P/5X. I'm not sure at all our phone is compatible with this feature.
But something strange: I'm actually on latest LineageOS (Feb. 07) and, when you used the search function in settings (on the top), and type "encryption", you can see one of the search result is "Convert to file encryption", which is basically what we are looking for. But if you click on this, you are redirected into Developer Options, and, well, this option isn't here.
So I don't know if this because I'm actually not encrypted, and FBE can be turn on only after an already Full Disk encrypted device, or simply because our device isn't capable of FBE.
Think we will have to wait for OnePlus to release their sources !

@unicondor
Up:
Alright, just found something VERY interesting:
Backup your phone, then
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then
BE SURE TO BACKUP ALL
Code:
fastboot --wipe-and-use-fbe
yes
So now my phone is rebooting, will update in few to check if it's encrypted
Update
Unfortunately, this does nothing special.

Perhaps OxygenOS will have fbe crypt by default... So we can avoid to do some special/specific command for enable it

[Q] Switching back and forth between nandroid backups

Is it ok to frequently switch between backed up nandroids? For example... switching between 2 different ROMS (CM10.1 and a TW Rom)?
Is this a totally safe practice?
Thanks

Is that even if your backups are for ROMs both on different versions of Android?
Make sure you back up the boot partition also since different versions of Android use different kernels. It would be wise to keep a zip file of the kernels on you sdcard so you can flash them easily if the phone doesn't boot up after a backup.
Search for "noobdev dual boot" on this forum. I believe it is a much more convenient solution than using backups and a lot of roms are supported

Which Kernels? How do I get a zip of them? excuse my ignorance but I've never really got involved with them so the above means nothing to me. Any useful links would be gratefully received!

I had a quick look at that useful link but was hoping to just try another Rom first as if I find a reliable one I'd probably stick to that.

The great thing about the dual boot is that you can switch between roms in a matter of 2 minutes (install excluded)
Typically I use it so I have my daily driver and one or two roms I want to give a try. Once I am happy with one of the try-outs I upgrade the primary.
Bottom line is the dual boot is very easy to work with, doesn't require (although it can be preferable to have one once every now and then) backups and allow for easy flashing of new roms without affecting your daily driver.
It damn well looks like you could use such convenience because if your ready to do what you listed above then I'd say you're likely to want to try new roms fairly often

Smartisan OS out for Note 2

As the title states this Chinese ROM has been released for our phone. From what I gather it is similar to MIUI in the sense of it being a rather hefty redesign of the default Android UI.
Did anyone get to try it on their phone ?
You can grab it from here : http://www.smartisan.cn/download.html

Tried it. Fairly decent. Superficially, the 3x3 grid size is off-putting. Even the 4x4 grid size isn't any better. Apart from that, very responsive and snappy ui as reported by blorro. All in all, good for a weekend experiment.

Was just about to reflash to another ROM and the OTA Updater on Smartisan notified of an Alpha Update.
Seemingly some call recording functions added now and recording editing possibilities.
The clock seems to get an overhaul as well.

How's it for a daily driver? Any knows issues? Camera/Sound/calls all working fine?
Do you install it just like any other custom ROM? i.e. root, move zip to SD card and flash it via recovery?

Been running it as a daily for past 3 days, no issues detected.
Make sure you have updated CWM recovery since it's 4.2.2
Backup EFS (Dr Ketan has a good tool for it,check his thread)
install from .zip as usual.
For root access, i found this on SGS3 Q&A Forum:

For those like me, do test in Chinese rom Smartisan OS, and want to root, use this link, and flash in recovery, go to the icon Su and run it, it worked for me in 90%, reinstalled my APPs by Titatiun Backup just can not acessoa the backup folder Titaniun that is on the card, but transfer this folder to the internal memory and I could install 90% of my apps.
I used this link:
http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shar...18152&third=15
==============================================================================================================================================================
Flashed , then i ran titanium restore w/o issues.
After flashing update via OTA, root access was kept.
I have downloaded the ROM but before going ahead I want to ask whether this is SDS safe or not and would it change the modem also as if it change the modem there are chances of efs corrupt

[FIX] Data Encryption Problem AOSP Roms

I think I should open a post just for this and to save some people
When it happens reboot to recovery connect phone to PC
Run ADB shell and put this command
Code:
e2fsck -f -y /dev/block/mmcblk0p47
That's all
None of your data gets deleted you keep it all
Just restart and you will be back to normal!
Not saying this isn't a good topic and I'm sure people will find this useful but probably doesn't belong in Original Development. May want to ask a mod to move it to General.

Looking up the command itself and the switches, I don't think it will. This is like running a chkdsk for Windows or running ScanPST on a Outlook PST file. Seems to fix the corrupted header on the internal card. Glad this was found since now I can flash an AOSP ROM without worries. Thanks to the OP! :highfive:

No because you only use this when you have the problem it could still happen again this fix it
It's not a permanent fix, but it's always a fix if you understand I mean every time you get the problem, you use the command every time you use it it will work!
Okay here is a question. Is it possible to run that command from a updater script? So it could be made into a flashable zip 9n it's own and could fix bugs when user is not around a computer? That would be awesome.

You may want to check this old thread from the Desire. Looks like the dev did have a flashable zip to do this. Not sure if it needs to be updated to match our partition for the internal card. If I have time, I'll can look at the zip to see this does and update it for the M8. I am trying to finish moving to my house, build a swing set for my kids, get my network up and running so I can get back some MIUI porting... gonna be a fun weekend.

The very problem itself encrypts your storage... I presume what you are implying is to put it on the external storage, but without that this is no help.
If the zip that fixes it is on your storage, it's not available till you actually run the fix manually suggested in the OP.

Have you seen the change log for TWRP 2.7.1.0?
TWRP said:
Add GUI option to change or repair file systems on individual partitions. The change is destructive so backup your data including internal sdcard first. This option should make it a little easier to migrate a device from ext4 -> f2fs, for instance. You will find this option under Wipe -> Advanced Wipe, then select only one partition and then press the Repair or Change File System button. If a developer has added f2fs support for your device and we don't have it in TWRP, please contact me via PM to arrange for it to be added.

So maybe this is the same thing.
Next question, will it matter that CM is now Android 4.4.3, with the newest nightly? Will that change the commands?
Repairing it's the same command? It's same it's destructive but I'm not sure if it's the change or the repair

Moto G6 Plus ROM Encryption

Has anyone been able to get encryption working on a GSI ROM with the Moto G6 Plus? I have tried a lot of different ROMs but have been unable to get encryption working.
On all ROMS that I have installed (phhTreble 9.0, AOSPExtended - numerous builds of each) the phone says that it is encrypted. But I am able to boot TWRP through fastboot, see all the files unencrypted and copy them to a SD card or OTG USB. This leads me to believe that the ROM is misreporting the encryption status on this phone since when I flash back to stock the file based encryption works correctly with all file names becoming scrambled in TWRP and errors being thrown when trying to copy them.
I won't migrate to my new device until I am convinced that the encryption works correctly. I am hoping that someone can help shed some light on this issue for me. Is this a GSI issue? Is this limited to the Moto G6 Plus? I have spent a lot of time digging to find information about this with no luck. I see a lot of posts about how to disable the force encryption for a number of devices? Is encryption broken on all ROMS / devices right now and I just haven't seen the discussion? Either that or I am one of the few people who are having an issue with device encryption. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, thanks for taking the time to read.
Try using the lastest twrp from official page it can decrypt internal storage :
https://dl.twrp.me/evert/twrp-3.2.3-1-evert.img
Or use this, also we can install it (go to Advanced> install ramdisk recovery and check backup current boot partition) this not permanent so every time you flash GSI or ROM it will disappeared, so you have to install it again

@RokCruz thank you so much!
I figured that it was something silly that I had missed or did not understand. I had been using a version of TWRP that was posted elsewhere on XDA that I guess does not support encryption and that was why when I flashed a GSI the files did not get encrypted correctly.
I do find it concerning that the ROMs I was using kept reporting that the phone was encrypted when it was not. But that is probably a different issue. I am glad that I caught this however. Thanks again.

What's the most current and bug free Pixel C Rom?

Hi. What's the most current pixel C rom that doesn't have any bugs or other issues? Looking to move away from stock but last I checked some of the roms had some bugs still. Is that still the case?
Lineage 17.1 is pretty smooth, camera crashes after ~30mins of video but I mean that's a lot, reboot fixes that. Sometimes on boot you have to wait ~2mins before unlock pattern will work if you want to secure it. Other than that, butter

Eh, bricking a Google device is pretty hard. Easiest thing is unlock it (enable oem unlocking) then flash twrp from fastboot (need a Linux liveboot or mac system to do that) then flash the rom+gapps. twrp should let you mount usb storage but if not you can adb 'em over, there's install instructions for all of those things in the requisite threads
