I've recorded a video to show what happens everytime I try to take a photo of a close object. I have a Galaxy Nexus and I don't have the same problem with that phone's camera (the object will always come properly focused). The Galaxy Nexus should have a way inferior camera, right?
This happens with any kernel or any rom I install. Even with the stock ones. I don't think it is a software problem or is it and it isn't related to what I can flash into the phone?
Anyway, here's the video. Maybe one of you knows about the problem and can lead me a way to fix it.

I've always thought that this is a common problem. I assumed that because an object is way too close, a phone's camera is not properly able to focus on it. I've experienced it with both my Galaxy S II and my Galaxy Note 3, whether it's on stock or on a custom ROM so I thought nothing of it. If there's a fix to this, I'd love to hear it! But this just might be something to do with Samsung phone's cameras, maybe?

I got the phone on launch day at Verizon and really like it. The speed, screen and still camera have all really impressed me. However there are 3 issues that have me considering exchanging it.
1) Screeching during phone calls. I don't use my phone for voice calls that much, but when I do, it's extremely distracting with the digital screeching that happens every few seconds. It does it worse sometimes but I rarely complete a call screech free. Is everyone on Verizon experiencing the same thing? Should I exchange mine for another? Can/Will a software fix this?
2) Touchscreen issues. Often when I double click to zoom in on a webpage, the phone starts registering phantom touches and is basically impossible to use until it's rebooted.
3) Autofocus issue on video recording. This absolutely ruins videos for me. I can't believe they'd ship a phone with this bad of an issue and I can't believe the reviews didn't make a bigger deal out of it. Is there anyway a custom video recording app could fix it? Even if LG is working on a fix, Verizon wouldn't roll it out for months I'm sure.
Any help on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated.
1 - I'm not experiencing any screeching on Verizon calls. An update with newer radio firmware might fix this sort of thing, but that might be a ways away and I haven't seen any other reports of this.
2 - Sounds like a pretty serious problem, show a vzw rep and you should be able to swap it out after they try soft resets and whatever other troubleshooting they wanna do.
3 - I'm experiencing this as well, not often, but it made for a crappy 5 second span in a video of my cat rolling around in the laundry
1. Are you OTA either VZN or flashed in a custom rom?
2. I stopped doing it this way because of knock on. I just use pinch zoom now.
3. I haven't had the issue as long add I didn't try to take videos like I was filming Blair witch. Aka stand still. And if you video tape things getting closer and farther away it's going to refocus. I did start using manual focus on pictures though....1000x better. Many more keepers.

No screeching here either, but I havent made many calls, and none of them have been that long (this phone can really make calls too? I figured it was just a gaming and texting machine )
I find my touchscreen is very sensitive in the fact that I dont even have to TOUCH it to press a button, sometimes. Just hovering my finger close enough to the screen causes a touch.....this may not be unique to this phone, Ive just never noticed it on others. Doesnt worry me too much. There is a place to calibrate it in the settings, have you tried running that procedure?
The video thing is apparently common for LG phones. I believe a previous Optimus phone had the same problem and it was fixed via an update. I would expect the same to happen for the G2, eventually (or a third party dev fixes it for them )

havent had the first 2 problems but the third i have every time i record with my camera. for a phone that has optical image stabilization, you shouldnt have to be perfectly still to get the camera to focus. the OIS on this camera is not very good if it cant have alot of light coming in. so recording this like inside of a building where the lighting is not as bright as outside will result in a blurred video if you move. this is a big downside to the camera to me. it would have been alot better if they would have atleast made the video camera tap to focus. but there is not 1 focus settings when in video mode. you dont always get to be still especially when videoing things like your kids. it gets annoying real fast and i end up having to redo the video.

You CAN tap to focus in videos. It will even continue to track the object you tap on if it moves.

not on the Verizon version. when you tap the screen, it does absolutely nothing. the only tracking thing is that tracking zoom which is pointless.
you can't manually choose what to focus on in the video app

on my at&t lg g2 when in video mode you can not tap to focus. you can in picture mode but my original post was not talking about picture mode.
I think you can tap to focus on the korean variant. Sadly, I think the korean variant is much more powerful than the international one.

this is kinda why i made a thread a while ago that died, asking if someone with the international version could upload the camera APK and port it to ours.

Really?? That's the version I have too. When I tap while recording video, it puts 2 blue brackets around the object. If I move in, that brackets grow larger and keep tracking the object. Vice versa too.
I did flash CleanROM, but I wasn't aware of any camera changes. I thought it worked like this even as stock.

Update there is,i will use it now and let you know.It might also be in yours and you dont know it ....like i didnt.
If you have set the 60fps video the feature doesnt work,it only works with the 30fps.Try it.It will work after you start the recording not before.

Yep, this is how mine is too. AT&T version. If you go into video mode, then options, then hit Reset, it should work after you start recording.

in 30 fps mode it has a tap to focus after you start recording, but in 60 fps it does not. this is what i also said in my original post. i was talking about 60 fps mode. why would you not have tap to focus in the best mode for the camera? they allow me to control other aspects in 60 fps mode but not focusing? that's something i dont understand. 60 fps mode is much smoother than 30 fps mode yet the camera doesnt have something as easy as any kind of focusing in 60 fps mode.

Hey people, how are you all doing? I too got a Galaxy Note III about a month ago and after a lot of experiences, I thought of asking for some advice.
When i use the camera app, the image looks clear and fantastic on the screen but as soon as I click capture, the saved image isn't what I see while capturing. I made sure I don't move the phone while capturing and tried it in different environments as well but the same continues.
I haven't rooted the phone yet and made sure that no app installed on the phones messes with the camera. So, any solution for the problem?
Thanks!

Ok so one of the main reason im buying the Note 3 is the "camera quality" after read all the comments of how good the note 3 camera is but for some reason the camera isnt as good as i expected , my mum s3 camera even better than mine! all the picture i takes look really grainy and almost as if it has a filters applied to it make it look like brushstrokes. i wonder if anyone on the same boat and how can i solve this ? flashing difference firmware ?

Maybe try another camera app from the playstore to rule out it's a hardware problem?
Disable the "intelligent stabilsation" feature and/or try a different app. Usually Camera FV-5 works fine.
I've searched XDA, I've searched Reddit, I've searched countless forums with ZERO success. I've tried Lenovo Super Cam, I've tried installing the LG Cam, I've tried flashing in the HTC cam. Nothing fixes the smeary, awful framerate and as a result I've taken exactly zero good photo or video on this phone in CM12. Is there any hope for CM or AOSP ROMs? I'll sell this phone before I end up putting an LG-Stock ROM on this thing.
I'm looking for stable framerate in photo preview and video preview, regardless of light on CM12. Does this holiest of G2nicorns actually exist?

CM12 is pretty old. I personally don't have that much issue with the camera anyway. It's a driver issue, which could explain the framerate, but the quality is pretty similar. Could you maybe take a couple of pictures and show us what the difference is?
Not sure how a photo would illustrate a low frame rate but this video shows the sneariness and frame drops. This isn't my video but the performance is similar or worse. It's the same for the photo viewfinder and that makes it impossible to take a photo or video in anything but glaring sunlight.

That's how it works though, the aperture remains open longer to capture more light, which causes less frames per second. Try recording the same thing on a stock rom and let us know how it goes. But then if it's a driver thing you can't do anything about it.

Well the video you linked IS a stock rom. There's no fix because it's not an issue, it's a camera characteristic. It's like saying a monitor doesn't display 120hz being a 60hz monitor. It doesn't, and if it did, it'd have some drawbacks. If you want steady framerate lower the iso.
It's still a phone camera, and a pretty good one at it. I'm not sure how people sometimes forget that. If you find a smartphone that matches a DSLR in the camera department and is around 200$ let me know.

The stock ROMs used to have the issue as shown in the video above, but they don't anymore. I don't know where but when I bought the phone and used 4.2 the camera was busted, and when I upgraded to 4.4 stock it was super smooth. And that's what I'm looking for, but only on AOSP or CM. No frame drops and a smooth, consistent 30fps or 60fps just like the stock ROM currently does. The stock ROM is an awful way to use this phone. I bought this phone when it was one of the cheap $180 unlocked devices posted on Phandroid with the strict intention of not using LG's C- effort. If it can't be done, it can't be done. No big deal.
There's a million threads from 2013 and 2014 that list "Oh use this, use that! Try Lenovo's camera! Flash so and so's fix even though the files are literally nowhere on the internet!" and literally nothing solves this issue in the slightest. I figured in 2015, maybe someone would know of a definite fix.
All 5.0 AOSP roms have a crap camera, including 4.4 AOSP.
Flash any 5.1 AOSP ROM for the G2 like BlissPop or Euphoria, it looks like Google got their **** together in 5.1. The camera IS better than CM12, but still not as good as LG rom.

Lol, this doesn't look like g2 at all. At least not compared to mine. The main reason I am not running aosp is the camera. Running aosp g2 turns into bad nexus 5 pretty much (imo). Not just the camera, there are tons of bugs there. If you want good camera - go with stock, as simple as that. LG camera drivers and ois makes videos very smooth. Grab a Rom with advanced camera drivers and install xcam. Fhd 60fps at night as good as in daylight. I will send you a video of mine if you want so you can see what I am talking about.
But yeah, aosp = ****ty camera, and there's nothing to do about it. Sorry
hey guys, So I've been struggling with this issue since the beginning, when I take a picture and then go to gallery to see it, it's ok overall but when I zoom it its very blurry and not as sharp as other phones that I compare it with, so when I compare with friend it's a shame as I actually have one of the best camera phones of 2016 (!!).
Anyway do u guys know what should I do?
The focus is good, my hands are not shaking and also I tried different gallery apps thinking maybe its not loading completely but thats not it.
I believe it is the image processing fault. I would like to know any idea to avoid this as well.
Maybe other camera app?
If you guys or anyone else know an app that would make a difference could you tell the name?
I tried some apps even paid ones and no luck
