Hi everyone,
My Nexus 7 at present isn't getting recognised when connected to a PC via USB. This was working the other week (the drivers were installed the first time I connected it via USB), but now when I connect it to a PC via USB the device isn't recognised by the PC.
I have tried this on multiple PC's and the same thing happens on all of them, so it must be something with the Nexus 7 that is causing the problem.
If I go into Device Manager on any of the PC's, with the Nexus 7 connected via USB it doesn't appear anywhere, so I can't go down the route of even updating the USB drivers as suggested for some similar issues on other threads.
I have even installed the Android SDK and installed the Windows USB driver package, but that hasn't done the trick either.
I have also tried installing the Microsoft MTP porting kit, but again this made no difference and the same can be said by switching between MTP and PTP mode and neither have made a difference. I don't have USB debugging enabled, enabling it doesn't make a difference either.
I can connect my Nexus S phone via USB without issue to any of the PC's I've tested the Nexus 7 on, which further backs my thinking of the issue being with the Nexus 7.
I'm running out of ideas, so thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone has any other suggestions before I do a factory reset on the Nexus 7.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Further to this I have done a factory reset, which has made no difference.
Any ideas other than going back to Google or Asus?
my N7 has trouble being recognized by different PCs. it is hit and miss. will your N7 charge when it's connected to a PC that doesn't recognize it? my N7 does not show the charging symbol on screen, but the battery percentage increases over time.
Also try a different cable just in case.

The N7 shows as charging when the USB cable is connected.

I've tried different cables, which makes no difference.
It's looking like a hardware fault of some sort as a factory reset made no difference. Think I will have no option to go back to Google/Asus

Try connecting it as a PTP device rather than MTP.. (that sometimes works for me when I am trying to force it to pick up the ADB device and install driver etc). If it detects it as PTP change it back (to MTP), and hopefully it will be OK.

I had already tried that, makes no difference unfortunately.

I knew it was driver issue but where to find the driver?? Looked on Asus' site and apparently the Nexus 7 is the Asus unwanted step-child. Not a mention of it there.
After a lot of looking and a lot of cursing,I found the answer! (It was the cursing that helped!) Install Windows Media Player v13. The needed driver is included. After a reboot, I was able to see the Nexus 7 on my PC and (more importantly) able to transfer files to it!
What happened
I have had the same problem with it not connecting. My n7 does charge when I plug it in but does not show up in my computer when i plug it in via usb. I have tried switching it to PTP mode but it does not find the device for what I'm doing(unlocking boot loader for my nexus 7) I hope someone can help greatly appreciated.

Hi, my computer came with Windows Media Player on it. It does not specify the version. I cannot find Windows Media Player v13 anywhere. Would someone please provide a link if possible. Thank You So Much!
USB Connection To PC Not Detected
Having the same issue here. These two guys as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1851868&highlight=usb+connected Did you also use a car charger? Don't know when it happened for me, but sometime between it last working and testing car chargers it stopped working. Same thing for me as one of the posters says, USB-OTG works, so I would think it's not a physical issue, but how to reset it. Dunno, Any help would be appreciated.
ADB, Fastboot, or USB Connected device in Windows does not work. Computer doesn't even detect, no USB connect sound.
UPDATE:
Installed Glazed Jellybean v.1.1.2 thinking it might clearup the issues with detection of USB and presenting it to the PC. Still same results, USB data connectivity is missing somehow. Just might be some sort of physical damage. Kernel was updated as well to Linaro Motley Kernel v1.1.1.

I had this happen after using a car charger from amazon. I actually really believe that the charger is the problem, as I had originally got the charger for my recently departed tf101, and after using the charger on that, same problem as what's happening with my n7. Sure, there's workarounds, but it'd be nice to connect to pc for faster transfers.

Same As Above... This sucks.
I am having the exact same problems listed previously & I've tried almost all the same fix attempts with no luck. Like a couple others, mine worked out of the box, then I charged it in my car (using the Nexus 7 cable plugged in to a USB cigarette lighter adapter)... Now, nothing but the indication on the Nexus that it's charging. No indication at all that the computer is even aware a device is plugged in to it. Has anyone found anything? Please, Lord, say it's so!!
I found a fix
Whether this will work for everyone I am not sure.
I took the USB from the hub I was using & plugged it into one of the front ports on the actual tower unit. The drivers were reinstalled and everything is working again.
It may be the Nexus didn't like the hub or it may be that particular USB port threw a wobbler.

Thanks, but I've plugged my N7 in to 15+ usb ports on 3 different PCs & haven't gotten anywhere. No changes.
I did call ASUS support yesterday & was told by the tech support person that they were working on a "PC SYNC" software for the N7, but did not have a release date for it yet. I'm not very optimistic. The tech sounded like she could have been reading from a script. Didn't sound as if she knew what she was talking about. I may take my N7 back & get a replacement.

Hey, do you remember what charger you used? I tried two from Amazon, so I can't tell which one gave me the problems. Here they are:

It was this one at first, then I complained it didn't work, and they sent one that could've come from their own car, the way it looked.
And yes, I know it says "for Asus tf101".
Perhaps there's a "safety switch" of some sort, written into the os, that "shuts down" the ability to communicate through usb after using these car chargers? That may sound stupid, i know.
I don't think it's a pc problem, since the n7 still charges when connected, and also, because this has happened twice to me, with both my tf101 and my n7,directly after using these car chargers.
And, for some reason, I don't believe it has caused hardware damage to the n7. I kind of believe what I said in the first paragraph. Maybe this will happen to a dev, and they will look into the problem.
I suppose rma is an option, but patience is not my strong point.

I have 3 computers and 2 Nexus 7 in household, and one N7 has no problem being recognized by computers and the second N7 wont connect as a MTP device at all, on any computer, with many different cable and port combos. The second N7 was bought just a few days ago and I was not going to root and leave a virgin device, so it was essential to have access to sdcard with computer as storage device. Looks like I am taking it back for replacement...which is a shame because other than usb problem the second N7 was a perfect C70...my first N7 C70 has a minor screen lift, and after comparing the two tabs side by side, a slightly more washed out display.

This was my thoughts as well, thought some of the system files were altered in someway by either that process or my installing usb related apps. USB OTG and USB monitoring apps specifically. However, I decided to try an load Glazed Jelly Bean hoping it would resolve this issue by rewriting the system files, but it was still broken. This has now changed from a connectivity issue to a totally dead unit for me, it slowly started refusing to give a full charge and now not even a response while plugged into an AC Charger.

That being said, I am using;
Nexus 4 16gb (not rooted, yet)
Cabelsson Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter
Dynex HDTV (Model # DX-32L 100A13)
This is what I would like to do:
Run apps (Like Netflix for example) on my phone and watch it on the t.v.
Sounded like it would be pretty straightforward but haven't been able to get it to work just yet. Have played around with settings on both nexus and TV, tried different ways to plug it in, etc.. So I'm hoping it is just a simple little something I am missing. I'm fairly tech-literate so it's really frustrating that I can't figure it out.. Lol. So if anyone can help me with I would be ever so grateful..
Couple of things:
I do *not* have a WiFi connection, but have the unl data/4G thru TMobile, Netflix runs like an dream on the phone. (So I guess the "Wireless display" option isn't applicable on the phone..
I also have a laptop running Win 8 if in some crazy old-school daisy-chaining way that I could use that as some sort of intermediary connection.. Lol.. Just throwing it out there
Anyone had this issue or have any suggestions??

That is what I was under the impression that this was... Darn it won't let me post a picture .. So just to be sure googled a pic of slimport adapter and that is what this is. It's made by Cablesson, is white. It has a larger piece to connect the HDMI into, then 2 smaller connections: 1 that goes into the Nexus (micro USB) then 1 for USB cord to go to the power source.
Ok need a little help with a nexus 4 with a broken digitizer.
Everything looks like it works but no touch.
Cost 150+ euro to fix, not going to happen buying a nexus 5.
But would love to use the nexus 4 as a media player with xbmc.
I just need to get a mouse working and then I am good.
BUT HOW?
how do I get a mouse running on this thing I have a OTG cable, I have plugged in a power usb hub.
But I get nothing.

There's no way to set it up without a working touchscreen. Your best bet is getting a friend with a Nexus 4 to let you borrow their N4. You replace the board and setup everything using the touchscreen to automatically connect to a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and then put the mobo back in the bad nexus 4 and there you go.
Or you interested in selling it?
Also, for OTG you need to flash Franco Kernel and use it's companion app (nonfree) to enable it. Not sure of any other way to do it. That also requires a touchscreen.
I think maybe your best bet is somehow installing a VNC server for android. Maybe via ADB install? *shrug* You can flash recovery and that will remain fully usable without touch.

If you still have a problem/your nexus 4:
if you aren't rooted, find out how to root [nexus root toolkit], if you have fastboot already it should be a breeze
You need a usb-otg Y cable so that power goes to the phone
install franco kernel and ziddey mod (search forums should come up quick cuz they are awesome)
then should work like a charm (plug and play)
My nexus 4 runs a mouse and 1tb hdd off an externally powered hub, but I could never get it to run with my normal otg cable only the Y cable... I think it's because nexus needs the power surge to know it is connected or something (more complicated that I don't understand).
Does anyone have an idea what Amazon calls their status/notification panel? Like is it an APK? Is it tied into something else? I'm trying some things, but I haven't been able to track down it's source. I may have completely missed this one, but until I'm accused of being blind as a bat, I'm stumped!
I changed the title of the thread because I wanted to add another question to this when I posted it, but had forgotten what I wanted to post.
I have downloaded a few apps for both my phone and my Fire HD 8 that tell you if your device is USB OTG (On The Go) capable and if it's turned on. Both my phone and the tablet have USB OTG both are supposedly working. Question is: Does a USB OTG adapter work on the tablets? If so, what kind do I need? I see several types on Amazon and some have every connection under the moon. I don't want to waste the 5 dollars or less if it doesn't work.
I want to be able to use my phone to talk to my tablet and unless you jerry rig a standard USB cable (I tried and the biggest problem is getting the rubber and plastic off the micro USB plug), USB OTG cable is the only other way I know of.

I am using a pass through-powered USB-C hub through which I am using external USB devices (keyboard and mouse), as well as a larger monitor for screen mirroring. This works reasonably well. However, the USB-C hub, while powering the external devices, does not charge the phone while it is in OTG host mode (which is needs to be in order for the external devices to work). This leads to the problem that the phone is slowly draining when external devices are used to play games, work on spreadsheets, or whatever. So, I was wondering why this is and found that OTG host mode charging seems to be restricted by the kernel. Very annoying!
Looking around I found that there are custom kernels for other phones that tackle this problem (examples here (OnePlus One) or here (for Xperia Z5 compact)). Which leads me tot he question: is there any known solution for this problem for the OnePlus5? Is there a custom kernel supporting charging in OTG host mode? Is there any other work-around that would allow me to power my device while using OTG?

Nope and it won't, I have a thread in the themes and apps section about targus display docks as after much research I found that it is the only way to reliably mirror your screen in real time with no latency issues, with that being said there is no charging whilst this is in use, I wish there was but there isn't.
It's possible I suppose that power could flow both ways but after all the time that I've spent looking, I'm yet to find it.
I've tried over 10 docks, splitters, dual output cables. Devices with power input, none have charged the device.
I think the nature of the way display link works it just doesn't allow it.

Yeah, I saw your thread. In fact, I was just about to post in there another - much cheaper - device I'm using for reliable mirroring.
Edit: actually I posted it in the 'usb-c to HDMI adapter'-thread, in which you were also quite active.

Yeah, it is definitely possible (see the threads I've linked). But it depends the kernel allowing it, from what I understand. Anyways, if nobody has come up with a kernel allowing for it, then it won't happen I guess.

With displaylink technology it's not possible.. with previous hardware ie the HTC 10 it was but only with standard usb to hdmi converters, displaylink doesn't allow it.
In regards to usb OTG cables, I've never tried.

Oh.. so then there is a second limitation based on DisplayLink. Aside of the kernel.
Well. Luckily the OP5 has great battery life. A few hours of activity is no problem. Especially since I run everything through a USB-hub with its own power source anyway.

From my tests I've found the hub being powered makes no difference to the drain of the battery on the phone..
The OnePlus has got amazing battery life, definitely something I need in my life for my next device..
In regards to charging whilst using a displaylink honestly my comment is based on the testing of around 20 different devices and none of them allow charging, if it exists I personally haven't come across it.
A shame but not the end of the world..
Lava - Simulcharge
For what it's worth, I had a difficult time finding a device which supports simultaneous host charging as well. As it turns out, there is a device called the Simulcharge from Lava Computer that works quite well on Samsung tablets. I'm not sure if it will work with other Android devices: (unable to post link - search amazon).
It's a bit expensive but it works great!
Is there a cheap displaylink that works with the OP5 that also has a USB port for peripherals?
Sorry to revive this thread from the dead, but I'm also looking for a way to connect both charger + USB-OTG at the same time. I have a USB C hub that's capable of that, it works perfectly fine on my Oneplus 7. However on the OP5 it's either OTG or charging.
Did you ever found a way?

Hi ! I have a custom app specifically developped for OP6 and have the issue you have on OP5 : otg OR charching. I have seen Krieg Kernel enables it on OP5. Have you tried it ?
I'm looking for some Kernel for OP6 but nothing seems to answer my need....
