Turning off cpu cores? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hello has anyone tried turning off cpu cores to save battery on s7 edge? i tried using kernel adiutor but the cores end up switching back on. Is there any kernel available that provides this support? ^ ^ i'm surprised nobody discussed this here yet..

The CPU cores already turn on and off as needed. If you're just going to turn off cores, why bother with a flagship. Just buy a mid range model with a decent size battery.

Eco Mode

Does anyone remember Eco Mode on the Optimus G? As far as I know, when it's activated, the APQ8064 (4xKrait 200 + Adreno 320) runs like a MSM8960T (2xKrait 200 + Adreno 320), shutting off two cores. People said that it made a large impact on battery life but performance was more or less unaffected (probably offloads more rendering to the GPU).
I saw in this thread that the OP managed to add Eco Mode to the ATT stock ROM but it says "WIP - doesn't show UP" of which I have no clue what it's supposed to mean.
the changelog says WIP for v1 alpha but for v2 and v3 it doesn't make any mention of it. Has anyone tried out the mod?
Interesting. The battery saver I this phone is useless, this world be great.
Typically unless am added feature it's mentioned as being reduced it should still be there.
I'm going to think that while it's chimed into the system.ui there's no switch to activate it. Possible a needed app.
ECO Mode on the OG did not turn off 2 cores. It just significantly throttled the way the cpu ramped up to higher frequency.

Really? I heard reports of it either shutting 2 cores or changer governor to conservative or something
I run ECO mode quite often. Governor stays the same. It just spends more time at 594mhz as its intermediary frequency than 1134mhz. It also hits max frequency sparingly.
You can see the difference in cpuspy or even using CPU-Z real time core frequencies. Shows you what each core is running at.

4 a57 cores are stopped in my oneplus 2

so i recently bought a oneplus 2 and after a few benchmark i was socked as i was getting only 2300 multicore and 700 single core in geek bench .
So i was looking for what causing it all that i have found 4 of those a57 cores are set to off by os even when battery is 80+ and temp is well . Then after a restart its all good 6 cores were working fine and had some good scores . Again after a day those 4 cores were off and same as low bench mark score .. in good battery conditions ..
What is this ? is this normal or should i just replace / refund this device . as this is unacceptable downloading asphalt 8 to check if those core starts working on load or not cause benchmarks are definitely not doing any good .
Thank you for any help !
Just change your kernel to Boeffla, it has better thermal control, thus won't disable your A57 core that early...

i am not sure if this is heat issue as most of the time phone stays in ideal condition when this happen and only by restart i can turn those cores on . Tried with many thing even i tried multitasking alot while those were off like 2-3 games apps even benchmarks does not turn on those cores thats y i get low benchmarks at that time . I am thinking about taking a replacement i have that option .

Samsung S4 i9500 force A7

I have the latest GearCM 6.0.1 with ViRus kernel on my S4. It overheats to 90 degrees, which I hear is normal. I don't use my phone much for anything high performance, and I'd like to be able to force it to not switch to the high performance A15 cpu to save power and reduce overheating. I've googled how this processor specifically works with Samsung but there seems to be a lack of information from where I'm looking. I think I remember reading that it switches to the A17 at 1300 mhz, but I often see my phone stuck at 600 mhz, which makes me wonder if upwards from 600 mhz is the A17 processor. I've already undervolted, but I want to go further as my GearCM has such a smooth interface I don't think I'll ever need to use my A17 again.
The 1300 MHz may be true for stock ROMs with stock kernels, but you're using a custom kernel which probably has its own set of rules.
When and which processor turns on can probably adjusted with hotplug.
From what I'm doing in the past, limiting CPU maximum frequency to 1200 MHz helped a bit to prevent core switching from A7 to A15 or vice versa.
In stock firmware, if Power saving mode is on, the CPU will stay on A7 core as much as possible.

Galaxy S4 i9500 governor doesnt use A15 1.6gh cores

Hello,
My galaxy S4 i9500 has 8 cores but can use only 4 at the same time.
Phone cores specifications:
Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7
Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A15
I think that governor only use Cortex-A7, even when its getting heat up to 70-80 celsius degrees because of high mhz.
Other thing CPU-Z shows that my phone has Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A7 and Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A15.
In cpu-z i have seen that my phone was using up to 1600 mhz per core with getting heat like i said even to 80 celsius degrees using only browers.
I found one app called "Galaxy devices power saver" and this app see "cpu 1" and "cpu 2". I changed cpu 1 max mhz to 800 and now phone max degree is 60 , but cpu 2(i think its cortex-a15) is turned off somehow. There is option to set governor each for cpu 1 and cpu 2. In cpu 1 i can set from list which governor i want but in cpu 2 the list is empty.
Sorry for bad english.
Thanks in advance.
Our CPU uses A7 core when idle for battery saving. A15 core will be used for processes that requires high performance CPU.
Your CPU might not use A15 core at all due to your app behavior.

is it possible to fix it?

You could try to revert all settings you made with that app.

yesterday my phone again got 70 degrees without reason in movie player, then i opened app "kernel auditor" and the degree dropped suddenly to 50. this app somehow changed cores from a7 to a15, whats wrong is with my phone?

Like I said, our CPU will switch to A15 core when a high performance app is running. If your phone is idle, A7 core will be used instead.
About temperature:
CPU temperature is constantly changing. It won't stay on the same value for a long time.

4 cores stopped

Hi all,
I have cpu z installed and I'm not rooted. It generally uses all 8 cores but when I accidentally opened it I saw that it was only using 4 cores. I decided to restart and it is still using 4 cores. Is this normal because my g5 plus always uses all 8 cores.
Your in low power or battery saver mode... look at the battery symbol.. I can't remember if it kicks in at 5% or 15% battery automatically, then turns off when you connect the charger... It sometimes takes a few minutes for everything to kick back in. I would bet after getting a decent charge it was back to normal?
There is also a issue with Nougat at newer reporting CPU usage incorrectly even in rooted devices... been talked about a lot, something in the stock Moto firmware (or maybe that was a different Moto, I get them confused sometimes).
Ok thanks. Apparently cpu z was wrong.
the cores are reduced to 4 when u are on battery saver.
On thanks. The weird part was I didn't turn the battery saver.

It's automatic at a certain battery level by default.
Oh ok. Does the same thing apply for quad cores and hexacores.

It will throttle them, although the exact implementation varies somewhat depending on the actual processor. littleBIG architecture tends to be that the BIG cores get shutdown, on more standard architecture like the SD625 they will get throttled to 50-75% of maximum speed, and others may just get a couple random cores disabled, it depends on the CPU and how Qualcomm/MediaTek/whoever engineered it.
Ok thanks!
