Background data/apps restricted despite being disabled - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I have an odd issue on the T-mo variant and while it's great for battery life, it's killing my workflow!
This has happened across multiple ROMs and since I've had the phone.
It also seems to be the same in Wifi and Cellular.
After about 5 minutes of turning off the screen, the phone stops getting notification.
For example, with the phone off, I have no Whatsapp messages.
Once I open Whatsapp on the other had, the phone blows up with all sorts of missed messages.
Same is true with other apps.
I use a messaging app, and the user account for the phone actually shows disconnected with the phone off.
It only comes back if I open the app, or after the phone is on about 3-4 minutes.
I have excluded the above apps in optimization, with the same results.
So, who's got ideas?

Im not experiencing the delay but via text as you but I'm definitely getting the lagging Gmail. I click it (sometimes I dont have to) and wham ... 8 emails. It's really become an issue. I do experience the random no reply from a texting every now & then ... It seems to be only non TMobile people it does it with. Like me and someone can be having a lengthy back & forth via text and outta nowhere they won't respond. Someone mentioned using Textra as a fix.
Im rooted on stock rom, T-Mobile with a few minimalistic thing's frozen.

Texts coming in <<160chars

I just bought my EVO last week, and can't figure out why SMS messages are coming in as small chunks, in jumbled order. This isn't just splitting up at a 160char limit. I'll get the first 40 chars, then chars 80-140, then 41-79, then 141-160. etc
What is going on?
Never heard of that problem
Swyped From Eva Running Myn's RLS4!
Leave it to me to uncover a new error! Can't even find anything about this in a Google search.
I am occasionally having the same problem. I am using shadySMS so I thought it was related to that program. Are you using the stock messaging app?
No, I prefer Handcent but the stock messaging app does the same thing
The other thing that happens is that I wont get any texts for a while. And then all of sudden I will get multiple texts all at once. It's almost like the phone is not polling or connecting or whatever and then it connects and downloads everything. I wonder if this is related.

I don't think I'm having that problem. Texts seems to come in real-time. So maybe that is unrelated. Never know, though.
probably just spotty service during the Holidays.
I'm with Cricket (piggybacks off Sprint) in Raleigh and have been having some wonky SMS behavior as well.
I'm not sure how spotty service would cause texts to come in, in small batches. And a strong coincidence it began when I switched from a HTC Hero to HTC Evo
XDA, I am disappoint!
No one has heard of this problem?
Ok so now I'm not even getting text messages >160chars. I called sprint and they had me turn off the phone for 3 mins while they reset something on their end and still - I only get short texts.

phone seriously lags during sms "storms"

I am a sys admin and get automated system alerts to my phone, sometimes i get flooded with what i like to call "sms storms" where i get a lot of (think 20-50) sms alerts at once.
This causes my phone, running streakdroid 1.9.1 on AT&T, to completely lag to the point where the phone is practically unusable. Think 10+ second input lag.
I've had this problem will all versions of streakdroid since I started using it around 1.6. With the recent hurricane/tropical storm it turned into a huge issue as my phone was unusable for over an hour as i kept getting text after text.
I've never run a stock rom since i got the phone so I don't know if that would work.
Also whenever I'm receiving an SMS my data connection stops working. IE If i'm surfing the web, downloading a file, or on facebook my data connection will drop completely while i'm receiving the sms.
I've done numerous resets including starting from factory rom and immediately flashing to streakdroid.

Cyanogenmod and push notifications (aka Whatsapp delays v2)

So I've been having problems with push notifications (whatsapp, gmail) for a looong time now and it really pisses me off like f&*k. I mean, if I want an "instant" messenger, I don't want to receive my messages after 2 hours or when I wake my phone up, right ?
I switched ROMs countless times, same thing with kernels and all I can say is that the push notifications work perfectly ONLY on stock kernel+ROM (as from my experience). But what if I don't want to stay on 2.1 and receive my messages instantly ?
I've done some research on google for CM and push notifications and it appears that I'm not the only one having this problem. People say that there's an issue with mobile internet connection (I don't experience problems on WiFi) and it feels like it "refreshes" from time to time instead of staying connected. So what's the case here ? I'm desperate to have it fixed, but after weeks of research, all I found is that people on stock ROMs don't experience this s#it...
In many roms, To save battery the internet connection refreshes, so u just have to remove that setting, Ask it to the developer of the respective rom how to do it

Thank you for your answer. I hope it helps with my push notifications issue, because I get this with literally every messanger (Whatsapp, Talk, Viber, GMail). Screw the battery life, I want to stay connected instead of getting a 2 hour delay between messages
I never have this issue :/ you sure that android is not killing them because of low memory etc

Lots of ROMs, lots of kernels, no task killer, no additional apps and it still disconnects after 5 minutes of the phone being idle. Then when I wake the phone up and go to Whatsapp for example, it takes a while to connect again (nothing shows in place of "Last seen"). In some cases I need to manually turn data transfer off and on again to make it work. Same with Viber, Google Talk, GMail. I eventually receive my messages after some random amount of time. Sometimes it's 5 minute delay, sometimes it's 2 hours.
Download trillian and ur good to go. In settings click keep WiFi activ and no prop no more.

I think you missunderstood me
I have no problems on WiFi. I have problems with push notifications in general. My data transfer won't stay connected full-time. It goes to sleep after I stop using my phone for a while, then it reconnects when I wake the phone up (sometimes I have to reconnect it manually), so the problem isn't with certain application, but with the phone in general.
Best regards
Solution
cyanogenmod turns off wi-fi when the phone is idle so you should download an app for that from the play store, like advanced wi-fi lock for example, to be able to keep it on. Hope i helped
But anyways i think that if the signal is low and the phone disconnects from the wireless network it wont connect again, so you will have to connect it manually again.
I just changed my provider to T-Mobile and it seems like the problem is gone. Why ? I don't know. I hope it's not just temporary and I won't come back here in a few days, complaining even more.
Regards
Yep, almost 2 days and it's working like a charm. If you have any problems with push notifications on CM, it's probably your provider screwing you over
Mod please close the thread
I don think its provider's problem. Why will they block the push notification?
I started experiencing this when I moved over to ICS.
hmm I don't know about ICS but on CM7 I don't have that problem. I have gmail, hotmail, whatsapp and viber apps, all with push notifications working fine... don't know why push notifications wouldn't work on ICS, in my opinion it's your providers fault if you try to push notifications using 3g or 2g data and they came delayed.
ps: I'm using miniCM7.
[edit: uh.. wrong threat]
is there a way of getting push notifications without google-apps?

[Q] New Hangouts with SMS integration has slowed down my phone

Hey, I don't know if you guys have had this issue, but since Hangouts came out with the official SMS integration update, my phone has been behaving like my old Droid Incredible.
Things I have noticed:
Phone would freeze for no reason for 10-20 sec at a time.
Phone at times would require a battery pull
Camera would go on but show just a black screen
WiFi and LTE would seize up like it was being overworked (I know, SMS goes through cellular not data)
Once I uninstalled the update everything went back to normal. I also uninstalled the beta of the "Cover" lock screen just for good measure.
Anyone experience this?

I haven't noticed any of this. I have noticed a decrease in battery life since installing the new hangouts. Since installing new hangouts Google services is always my #2 battery drainer.

Exact same behavior on my SGS3. Phone is almost unusable at times, stock 4.1.2 Rom. Was fast an responsive before update. Now when phone rings some times I can't even answer! I am going to remove and see if performance improves.

Cant send SMS... Sometimes?

I'm hoping somebody has experienced this before and found a fix and can help me out...
All day I've been struggling to send SMS messages... I'm on 11.0.1.1, magisk rooted, with RICE installed. Everything was working great but today when i woke up, i was unable to send SMS messages...
I'm receiving them, but sometimes they are delayed and i get a few at a time with nothing coming in again for a short time after that, but i've made no changes to my phone in the last 2 days. I've rebooted a few times between then and now (twice yesterday, just because), so i cant really understand why i would just randomly be unable to send text messages or why they are received in bursts like this?
I've gone in and reset my "Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth" settings from within the reset options, and this appears to fix the issue, but only for a minute or so and suddenly they stop sending again... I thought maybe its the tower, so i used my daughters phone to text my wife and that worked perfectly fine. Immediately before and after, mine wouldnt send.
Any ideas, links, or guidance that might help me figure this out?
Since there's been some updates and no responses to my thread, i wanted to revisit this and see if i'm still the only one on earth with this issue.
The issue seemed to have completely gone away on its own, no idea why or how... But a couple weeks ago i decided to install the update to 11.0.2.2 on my IN11AA. Ever since, my phone will randomly stop receiving SMS messages completely. I can still send, just cant receive. The only way to fix this is to reboot.
Anyone else with this issue? Anyone find a reason for this? A fix perhaps?

Seeming this issue doesn't seem to be widespread, could be a carrier side issue?
It's a shame we don't have dual boot capabilities because you could have switched to stock and checked.
Also try a secondary SIM from maybe someone in your household and send using that SIM and see what happens.
I know there are delays after rebooting, I do a lot of magisk module work and every reboot try sending notifications using SMS or some other methods and I get around 3 mins no send or receive but not at the length you do.

I just had the issue again yesterday. Wife and I started texting eachother at about 8am, except, i didnt receive any of her messages until 5:30pm when she got home and told me she had been texting me. I rebooted 3 times, which once usually resolves the issue but not this time. I had to go into the settings and reset my WiFi/Mobile/Bluetooth settings, then it worked immediately.
Because of the solutions, i wouldnt think its a sim issue, but im going to test it anyway. I've factory reset a few times in the past and i still get the issue. I've had the issue while rooted and not rooted. Four of us have phones, 3 are Samsung and then there's mine, and mine's the only one with the issue.

What SMS app are you using? I wonder if you have enabled RCS messaging the new Google style messaging? Because maybe it uses WiFi to download some of the SMS, and if your carrier doesn't support it maybe you only receive it when you are on WiFi.
Try on WiFi then try just on mobile data and see if you notice.
I attached a photo check the top setting. Google might be persisting your setting (if you are using Google messages)
Also why don't you and your wife try a simnswap next time you happen and you are both at home, if your wife doesn't receive it then it's sim/network related.

I'm using Google Messages, and yes i do have RCS enabled. I dont believe thats the case though because the messages that are blocked are sometimes just an "ok" message. I'm almost always on WiFi though too.
The primary issue with sim swapping with my wife is that we would need to swap sims for up to 2 weeks since sometimes I have no issues for 2 weeks, then i get the issue once or twice a day for three days. The worst part (for me anyway) is that her screen is SHATTERED on her phone (she's using a Note10+) and its hard to see anything, so i've been trying to get her to get a new phone. I think we might be FINALLY upgrading her (after 5 months) to an S21 Ultra, so maybe we'll give that a shot there.
I'm actually wondering if it has something to do with messages for web. I've noticed that the issue only really happens after using that, but.. It doesnt always happen after using messages for web, so it might just be a coincidence.
I'm pretty sure its not Google Messages, or RCS, and fairly certain its not messages for web, because i used to use Signal only, and i still had the issue a few times.

When you say "ok" are you just sending short messages or the suggested replies by Google?
I had problems with auto reply in notifications for a while.
Tbh I just use telegram or signal becuase they don't require being connected to the device directly when using the web/desktop versions.
Yeah swapping for 2 weeks isn't great!
Interesting you had this issue with signal too, sounds like Google cloud messaging (needed for any app push notifications and messaging) is in a standby mode.
You got naptime or servicely installed? Shame no one else is seeing this issue might be easier to diagnose
