Galaxy s4 cpu temp - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK usually my CPU hardly ever exceeds 60c. Only when charging and watching YouTube at 60fps. Usually when browsing it remains 45-55c and no more. But it decided to stay at 59-64c over the past 20 mins and peaked at 68c. I went into dev settings and enabled CPU monitor and found twitch was causing the CPU to overheat (more than the s4 does already). I uninstalled it and. As I type this I'm around 44-47c. Was that really high temperature, and the relatively high normal operating temperature damaging to the phone. Or just uncomfortable to hold?

The top part of my screen has a darker tone than the bottom part. It's hardly visible in most cases, but there are time when you can clearly see it.
Don't know about the motherboard and such, but I'm pretty sure this screen tinting is a result of the heat, since it's the top part that always gets hot.
But I'm also a heavy user - I use the phone from morning to evening and the screen is pretty much on all that time during that period.
To exemplify: I woke up like 6 hours ago and the screen was off maybe a total of 30 minutes in those 6 hours.
So maybe the heavy usage + heat is what caused this degradation.
Anyway, this is bound to happen at some point anyway, regardless of usage and heat - that's the nature of AMOLED - though the process may be accelerated by using high brightness and the aforementioned heat.

My temp seems to skyrocket just after boot and after clearing ram once about 1 min after it will drop 10 degrees c

[Q] Battery Temperature Questions

My Vibrant has always run warm, and I never paid much attention until I started running an over-clocked kernel. It got me to thinking:
1. I hear there is a temperature warning notification that pops up when it gets too hot. Anyone know what the threshold is for this?
2. At what temperature is damage likely (somewhere above the notification, I would assume)?
3. Are there any hardware based failsafes, such as something to prevent the battery from attempting to charge when its too hot?
I tend to run around 90 under light usage and up to 110 for heavy usage (doesn't seem too bad considering the temps can get up to 120 in the summer around here). Hotter when the battery is charging. Just caught it at 127 while browsing the web and charging, which is higher than I'm comfortable with, but I still didn't get a temperature warning notification.
- Nick
Mine can get up to 120 when surfing and charging. I usually quit what I'm doing at that point, that much heat in that small an area makes me nervous.
I've had a couple of apps that get the phone quite warm, then lock up or force a soft boot. Unfortunately I'm not able to see the temp at that point. Judging by feel it is below the 120 degree mark tho.
I have been in ovens calibrating airflow speeds (130F at 75mph) and haven't had battery problems.

phone temperature

I was wondering if any one else's Atrix gets pretty warm/hot from use. I was expecting the dual core to generate heat but it does concern me a little. The battery app I am using displays the phone temp and when its idle it is about low to mid 30's. I noticed today while using the gps and playing music at the same time the phone started to get pretty hot. when I looked at the temp it was 45. It didn't get any hotter then that and I tried moving the phone out of direct sunlight to see if it would drop the temps a little but it still stayed pegged at 45. Playing one of the dual core supported games the phone would hover around 40-42 deg. Are these normal operating temps for the phone?
I don't have an atrix.. yet. but could it be due to the 1960mAh battery? that would in theory heat the phone up quite a bit..
I haven't checked the numbers, but what you describe matches my subjective experience. Most of the time the phone stays cool, but when it can get warm during an extended Samurai II session or when charging from less than 50% battery.
I think in one of the other multiple battery threads someone explained that the heat is coming from where the processors are located, the bottom portion of the screen.
My Atrix does get noticeably hot when streaming video or playing games...
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
The dual 1GHz cpu, gpu, and 1GB DDR2 ram packages are stacked on top of each other, just above where the speaker grill is. I'd expect that to get quite warm.

45C is not that bad. I hear about people running their phones to 50 - 55C. The only issue with prolonged use at that temp would be decreased battery performance. Even then it would need to be running at that temp pretty constantly to have any noticeable effect unless you plan on keeping the phone for more than a year (which would be impossible for someone like me anyways, I like shiny new things)

Normal operating temperature for Nexus 7? (overheating?)

I just got my Nexus 7 two days ago and I'm worried about the battery temperatures that I'm getting. When I haven't used it for several hours the temperature is usually 75-85 °F, but after general use (Facebook, Chrome) the temperature increases to over 90°F. Right now it's at 92.8°F after less than an hour of general use. Playing games makes it get even hotter, as you can see in the pictures I attached.
It's also mainly on the bottom left side that gets noticeably warm, I feel like it shouldn't be this warm already. I saw a few people had similar issues, are these temperatures out of the normal range or am I worrying for nothing?

battery temp isnt an idicator of your cpu temp. the n7 has a cpu temp option used by some apps(like trinity kernel toolbox) to show cou temp. btw, its normal for the cpu to go to 60C+ cpu temps on a hot day or during heavy use. anyways, did you realize that the human body averages around 98.6F? so, id even say that your battery is still fairly cool. while charging and using your n7, it would be normal to see battery temps around 110F or slightly higher. oh, and your cpu temps safety is at 100C, itll shutdown automatically if that tempurature is reached.

[Q][I9505] Heat and Battery issues - Return or Keep?

Dear Friends and Community,
I recently acquired the S4 with moderate excitement. I already had a S3 and I was very happy with it but I had the option to get an S4 after extending one of our contracts so I went for it and gave my S3 to my wife - she's very happy with it now But i am not very happy with my S4 for 2 reasons:
- Extensive heat generation (36-47C) while surfing, watching videos, natigating calling etc.
- The heat seems to originate from the top portion of the phone on the back as well as the front side around the camera. it is uncomfortable to hold it against my hear on call
- My S3 did not heat up this much or this often. I also did not have any battery charge cliffs or jumps with my S3.
- As the device heats up, the battery drains INSANELY fast. Also I've noticed a disruptive and sudden battery discharge. As I charged my device for the frist time to 100% moments later the battery level jumped from for example 95% to 82% in one second. Is this due to battery calibration issues (because the device is new and the battery has not been charged many times yet) or is this something that can be considered a hardware flaw of the battery or device? I could be watching a video at medium brightness and my battery would go down by 1% each 2 minutes.
Sometimes during use and especially when it heats up some percentages are skipped while discharging (95%, 93%, 89% without sequencing down one by one but rather as 'chunks' of battery loss. ) did you exhibit similar behavior on your phone? Are these battery 'jumps' tied to the heat development?
And now the main questions: Should I return the device and exchange it against a new one or should I wait until Rom development or a patch tackles the problem ? I've already installed a recent OTA from Samsung and hoped the problem would vanish but no luck.
I'd be thrilled to hear your Opinions.
Best,
Thomas
Ive also noticed heating up and fast battery discharge, not one full day of normal usage, my s3 lasted at least 2 times longer. i hope it will pass as i finish 3 times battery charge discharge. for now im excited with camera quality and benchmarks scores i love this phone already, its still plastic but i dont care, with every phone i use silicon or other cases, for s4 i bought original samsung case with plastic back rounded by rubber.
In few days if overheating and fast discharge will not pass on its own i will flash firmware again with kies (repeir mode) and reset all settings.
I also experienced the same issue, its getting hot not warm while doing normal tasks... Dear Thomas u have see temp. in between 37 to 47 but my phone heats upto 55c while gaming... now my phone is with samsung service center, but i am not sure they will replace it with new one as their policy allows replacement only within seven days from the date of purchase and i bought it 27th April itself, just next day of launch. Now i am thinking that why the hell i rushed to buy it. i should have waited for user reviews...
And BTW flashing original firmware doesn't help. Because people at service center had done that and given my cell back to me, but that issue was still there so submitted it again to the service center.....
Are you guys getting these temperature readings using e.g. Battery temperature reading of Cool Tool?
My battery temperature as reported by cool tool never got above 40C but it felt quite hot to the touch already And I am not using any case on it...
I have a case arround it. I will play some games later to see where the temp peaks. but I think it will also be around 50 because it already gets pretty warm doing basic stuff like watching videos or using viber to call.
It feels like this is a problem for all S4's out there.
Check out this video at min 3:25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUx40kXZF5s (Steep drops in battery)
I really don't want to send in my device for no reason because I will most probably get a refurb or even a device with more problems.
I just want to know if other people have experienced similar issue.
You can check with the app called BatteryGraph and see if sometimes a few percent are skipped down the graph.
It would be great if someone did this for me
Same here with the heat. I undervolted -37,5mV and underclocked 300MHz, now everything is fine
Benchmarkscores are a little worse, but tbh, I really don't care. No current app or game is gonna use it anyway. Seems like a waste of battery life to keep the 1,9GHz clock speed.
Did the same with the Galaxy S2 I owned, which became quite hot too. Samsung has a tendency to overclock their chips just to outperform every other phone on the market, but the truth is, there is virtually no benefit in keeping the maxed clock speed in everyday use, other than doing benchmarks all the time ...

Overheating problem on one plus 5 ?

So, I noticed that When gaming (especialy with game offering 60 Fps mode) the phone will freeze and then goes into reboot even when played on cold room
from CPU temp apps, it seems when the temperature hit 40 centigrade. the phone shut down
Anyone else have this kind of problem ?
is bellow 40 centigrade is the safe limit for this phone ?
for all its awesome spec it kind restrictive for use gaming
This is by far the coolest device I've ever owned, no heat no matter what I throw at it. What does your setup look like? (ROM, kernel, etc.)
Its basicly stock one. since I just got it 2-3 days ago
Im testing it to run some CPU intensive games (60fps)
when the temperature reach 40 centigrade. it shut down
on normal usage it is quite cold.
but it seems the thermal threshold were quite low, my old HTC might also throttled down at 40 centrigade
but it dont shut down until 50 or 51 centrigade.
1+ 5 dont thorrtled but instead goes straight into shutdown
my country ambient temperature were quite high due to located near equator (30 centigrade avg, with 35 centrigade being common on daylight)
so without air conditioned room, I found it can become overheated - rather quickly
only had overheat problems using camera related chat apps (kik) and in 110 Fahrenheit degrees in CA USA

Might be a bit of an extreme solution but try doing a factory reset and see if that helps. If not, contact OnePlus support and see if you can get an RMA started. I say that because my device stays cool even on the hottest days of where I am.

I agree with the RMA solution, something isn't right because I can do anything on this phone and it never gets hot. Even when it's 99 degrees Fahrenheit with 70% humidity here in Ohio.
I've done some seriously intensive gaming and crap on this phone, and I cannot get it to overheat.
The snapdragon 835 is the coolest phone processor, you don't have any overheating issue, it must be something else. When you say 49° are you talking about the cpu, battery, skin temp?

CPU temp record its 40 centrigade when device shut down
both battery and CPU were at similiar temperature (+- 2 degree)

Cpu at 40° while gaming is really low, some phones hit 85°, of course they will throttle after that.

yeah. Thats why when the phone shut down after reach 40 centigrade.
its confusing since the thermal threshold should not be that low
same problem here
freez then reboot in heavy games
temperature around 40-50
factory reset doesnt help
