S7 edge sm-g935p twrp? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I read a twrp release thread that said it wasn't possible because of locked bootloader but i wanted to verify, is there a twrp for this phone? Definitely dont want to do anything to this phone without a good recovery option.
Thanks.

If you have a exynos version yes.
Snapdragon version no.
Sent from my Note 7, S7 Edge or S6

No g935p is snapdragon.
Any working custom recovery works for it? Got a samsung s serries phone because i loved my s4 and it had tons of supply for it, with twrp it was virtually impossible to screw it up, bricked a couple devices before. One without even modifying anything and with stock recovery was left dead in the water.

There is no custom recovery or toot of any
kind for the samsung snapdragon phones.
There are three good places you can check out where
you can sell that phone, Ebay, Swappa and Offerup.
You need to buy a international exynos model samsung
galaxy phone if you want root, custom roms and features.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

Root device

Hello does anyone know if it is possible to root the galaxy s7 edge, I have the AT&T and? Thanks for the help in advance
As of right now it there is no working root method.
The phone is fairly new and will take some time before it will be rooted.
I believe it took almost over a month just to get the S6 rooted, but since the S7 is fairly similar to the S6 it might not take long.
Unlikely the att will get rooted since it has a locked bootloader.
I thought with the locked bootloader you can root the device you just can't flash any custom Roms to it?

Is it possible to root a Galaxy S7 (G930V)?

Hello Everyone!
I have a Verizon Galaxy S7 and I am wanting to root it! But when I tried it did not work so I just put stock rom file back on it. I read online that my boot loader is blocking the root? I did update to 6.0.1 and my version is G930VVRS4APH1
If anyone has achieved root on this device will you please share instructions on how you did it? Thank you

Yes. and after 2 bricked S7's and a 100 rabbit holes leading me to who knows where, I finally got it.. give me a day or so and ill post the link and how to
The thread Sir_Eagle posted is the correct one for anything root. If something looped, then you either did not meet the prerequisites of the guide or did not follow every step of the guide. The bootloader on this variant requires every image to be signed, this is why the only root we currently have is via a SIGNED AND LEAKED engineer bootloader. Without this, there is no root on this variant. If you DO want to root, follow the link Sir_Eagle provided (but realize it comes with an outdated hacky kernel that has known issues), or go with stock. Up to you
The S7 I should have bought.

That's still a U snapdragon variant (note Snapdragon 820 in specs).. Would be equally unlockable for the bootloader... "UNLOCKED" in retail sense means SIM unlocked, not bootloader unlocked.

I stand corrected. How would one obtain a phone (preferably Samsung) with bootloader unlocked?

Buy the European version of the phone with the Exynos processor instead of the US version with the Qualcomm one. Problem is that phone likely won't work with any of the carriers here in the USA. Or you could move to Europe.

Snapdragon variants aren't unlockable (exception being one hardware different model than ours). You can get an international samsung chipset variant with unlocked bootloader but not a US snapdragon one.

Thanks. I don't have to worry about that for a while, since I just upgraded. I don't like the idea of no root, but it is what it is. Guess I'll check the device recommendation threads next time.
A few other questions that occur (in case I add more devices to my account or pick up an additional service):
1. Aside from an international there a (quality) phone/brand that will allow rooting in the U.S.?
2. What caveats can be expected when using an international device (presumably, I can get one compatible with whatever carrier I choose)
I guess it's conceivable that I could buy one of these 'rootable' phones and either add it to my Verizon acct or replace one of my current lines.
I miss root, particularly the ability to create nandroids and Titanium backups. Oh, and accessing the entire file system.

So I am new to this stuff and I am wondering what does OEM unlock mean? Does this mean that the boot loader is unlocked? I have a samsung galaxy s7 edge with AT&T sm-G935A and I am trying to figure out if I can use TWRP and I see where you say no but I have found some sites that say yes and I am confused and do not want to brick my phone. I have rooted it just fine but would like custom recovery options if possible. As I said I am new to this and trying to figure it all out. Thanks.

There is no way to get the Qualcomm (US) Galaxy S7's to boot unsigned code. Specifically, Samsung signed code. That means no TWRP or custom ROMs. The engineering kernel (which you rooted with) was leaked and is signed by Samsung, but it will only boot signed kernels. It does, however, make /system read-write so you can add your own system services.
The only good news is that Odin can recover from quite a few situations that would ordinarily brick a phone, but there are no custom recovery options such as what TWRP provides (like a whole ROM backup)
If you want a fully open Galaxy S7 you will have to import one of the Exynos devices, as they are still unlockable for now. However, as Samsung Pay expands, expect those to get locked down at some point in the future.

OEM Unlocking is specifically for "Unlocking" on the carrier side so the device can be used on AT&T/T-Mo/Sprint etc
Bootloader unlocking is a completely different thing.

That's not entirely true. Turning on OEM Unlock warns that using Custom OS will disable functions like Knox and Samsung Pay. I own an AT&T Galaxy s7 Edge (SM-G935A) running official Oreo OS (Android 8.0.0)
What you have described is Carrier unlocking.

DISCUSSION THREAD: Root for Snapdragon USA Variants of S8 and S8+ (G950U/G955U)

User "elliwigy" doesn't want non-pledge comments on their bounty thread. So I figured we could set up shop here and discuss all of our crazy root rumors. If anyone is wishing to pledge for root, please go here instead: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/bounty-thread-snapdragon-usa-variants-t3598271
Awesome thanks for creating this thread hopefully we will have root soon.
So I heard lasts years S7 snapdragon root wasn't that great is that true? I had the 935F which had roms, kernels, custom recovery etc.... Root was achieved on the snapdragon S7 in a different way... Did they get twrp and roms or just root?.... Definitely keeping my fingers crossed watching these threads

It had a bunch of overheating issues and i think some features may have been mia. the same exploit isn't available here, yet, because it relied on an early build of the 935u model, and there is no such build found for these phones, yet.

It used a special engineering kernel. That is purchased by certified Samsung repair shops. It was basically worthless. It made the phone run so poorly.

temp root means no TWRP u could flash some stock roms with flash fire but usually made the lag battery and overheating worse for s7e

K... Thanks for clarifying.... So if by chance we do get root most likely a bigger challenge to unlock the bootloader/add custom recovery ... I guess the thing that pisses me off is the "U1" got lumped in with all the carrier "U" varients... Both have locked bootloader... I've always used exynos Galaxys on my GSM network never had connection issues... Mostly my fault cause I didn't get the international....Any recommendations for youtube ad blockers I've tried adclear but can't downgrade my youtube for some reason...

I actually think if we get either root or bootloader unlock we will get both. With how Samsung has the device locked down it is going to take someone finding a new vulnerability that allows to unlock the bootloader or root the device. But it could take a long time to find. Too many lines of code to even count.
Other option is the someone at Samsung releases the kernel source code or some sort of bootloader unlocking software. Right there is a group of debs working hard at it but they are not close. I'm rooting for them but I would not hold your breath.
Also most of the new phone will never get root anymore. LG, Motorola, Google, Samsung, HTC all are going to be completely locked down this year.

I've seen the term "temp root" going around. What is that exactly? I want to move a user app into my system folder to make it a system app, and I believe I need root to do this. Is there any way this is possible to do without a full root and bootloader unlocked?
No. "System" is read only.

Even funnier, I am doing a 24 month payment plan for my device, with 1 gig data (always on wifi, so it works for me) and my monthly bill is 26.42 lol.
With a unlocked bootloader, you can do an official CF Auto Root right now.

Do they physically touch the device and do it in front of you? Or does it come out of the box unlocked? I'm trying to see what I can dig up.

Root yes, twrp no.
It's really a shame that Qualcomm's secure boot actually lives up to its name in Qualcomm's latest bootloaders! That's the US Snapdragon S8/S8+ problem. All the international S8/S8+ people get to enjoy their TWRP and custom kernels, etc., but not the US....
