VS995 Stuck in TWRP. - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Followed Dirty Santa process and made it into TWRP, but after following step 4 it simply reboots into TWRP every time. Any ideas? Attempted SuperSU flash and wipe multiple times and no change. Just boots back into TWRP.

check this out https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/help/lg-v20-access-to-fastboot-t3557328

Pull your battery then replace it.
Then do what's in the bottom post of this screen capture.
After that follow my next post.

Then select yes two times to erase the downloaded update from your internal memory that is causing the recovery loop.
Don't worry. If you have TWRP recovery it cannot actually do the reset. It will just get you out of the loop.
You will end up in TWRP one final time after the factory reset. If you've already flashed a rom - just click reboot system and you'll be good to go.

[Q] Recovery Question/Trouble Rooting

Yesterday I tried to root my nexus 4 and I followed a tutorial. I unlocked the bootloader and was able to flash twrp 2.6.3.0 custom recovery. However, I forgot to factory reset my device before flashing the recovery. When I got to the twrp screen it asked me for my password. I entered the one for my device but I couldn't get in. I entered it in a couple more times, but still it wasn't unlocking. I pressed the back button and I randomly got into the recovery. From there I continued the rooting process but when I tried to wipe cache or dalviks cahce it always said that It failed (never got to the point of flashing SuperSU). I then tried to wipe the system but I stilled got the failed message.I had no choice but to exit out of twrp and turn off my device and when I did, I got stuck at the nexus logo. I was able to get my device back to stock and I want to root my device but I'm not sure what went wrong. Should I try using twrp 2.6.0.0 because a lot of guides I followed used that custom recovery. Also, if I use and old recovery will I be able to update it later? I also followed this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41291371&postcount=28 so I wouldn't lose my data. I tried including as much info as possible so sorry if I wrote too much.

Hey man,
I followed this guide. I flashed CWM instead of TWRP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179
Here is the version of Recovery I flashed:
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.6-mako.img
Here is the version of SU I flashed:
http://download.chainfire.eu/351/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip
Then I just followed the instructions on that post and everything seemed to work well for me

4.4 OTA update. Stuck at splash screen

Ok do I did search first but can't find anyone with the same problem.
Started with stock 4.3 rooted, unlocked,TWRP.
Got the update notification, told it to update. It auto rebooted to TWRP and applied the update with no error. When it was done (assuming it was done progress bar finished) it went to the main TWRP menu. I told it to reboot and it just sits at the new 4.3 splash screen animation. I assumed it may take a bit so I let it sit for about 20min with no change. Rebooted it a couple times, also tried applying the update again via twrp (errors out as i woukd expect). Wiped dalvik and cache. Didn't do a factory wipe because I'd like to avoid that but still no change.
Any suggestions? Should I manually load the full 4.4 package via TWRP?
Thanks!

Same exact setup... Say exact issue... Oh and before rebooting I wiped Dalvik and Cache as "Sandard Operating Proceedure" ... I'm going to just do a clean flash at this point....

Prior to the installation of the OTA it is safer to re-install stock recovery. Root is lost but re-installing a custom recovery and SuperSu bring back root.

How can i install stock recovery?
You *could* unzip the factory image and then fastboot the recovery.img file. A lot easier is to download the wugfresh nexus root toolkit and use that:
http://www.wugfresh.com/
ty, but do u think it works, because i cant open my nexus 10 memory from the pc, since it is stuck at start up
Wug's toolkit has an option to restore to stock from a bricked system. All you need to be able to do is to get to the bootloader (press the power button while holding down both volume buttons -- you should get a dead android with a red triangle on chest).

Downgrading from Nougat to Marshmallow

I've been reading about bricked devices and want to downgrade from N to MM. I seen a thread in the 5X forum about it but want to be be sure before I attempt it with my 6P. Anyone have trouble downgrading? Can I just flash the factory image like usual? Thanks in advance.

Advice for now - Don't even bother unless your ready for a soft bricked device until the issue is resolved and considering we dont even have a factory image it could be weeks away.
its your descision but there are two threads now attempting to fix this and people have had mixed results, the only seemingly helpful thing is to back up 100% of your devices partitions / efs and absolutely everything from your MM build and store it safe on your PC for when your device eventually soft bricks.
just don't bother ! if your on MM stay for another month or so or lump it with stock rooted N, don't attempt to go back !

Yeah, so many stories of expensive paperweights when trying the downgrade. I suspect they're having some major issues with the 6p factory image, since the 5x has been posted for nearly two weeks. I've got mine working pretty well, with really good battery and ARISE sound actually working system-wide. I suspect we may see the factory image when this month's security update is rolled out - at least I hope so, given we're already into September.
That's what I figured. Looks like I'm staying on N. Thanks!

@dutchy716, you should be fine. Only people I saw who bricked either flashed the OTA package over a custom ROM (never, ever do this even on "stock debloated" ROMs) or restored a MM nandroid backup while being on N. I have gone back to MM plenty of times (at this point, close to 10). The steps to downgrade and not brick have always been the same and from what I've seen it's only been user error that put people in that position. Make sure you're using the latest TWRP which at this point and time is 3.0.2-1. This guide assumes you know ADB/fastboot and have drivers correctly installed. Follow sticky guide 'how to' links in general if this isn't the case. Using a PC, download and extract the 6.0.1 factory image.
Step 0.5: If you don't already have it, fastboot flash TWRP 3.0.2-1
Step 1: Reboot to TWRP
Step 2: Wipe > Factory Reset / Wipe > Advanced > System, Data, Cache & Dalvik
Step 3: Reboot to bootloader, swipe to ignore TWRP warning of no OS installed if you wiped system partition from advanced section.
Step 4: Fastboot time;
fastboot devices
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-angler-angler-03.54.img
-use volume & power keys to reboot back to bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-angler-angler-03.61.img
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Step 5: Reboot to recovery. When you see the android on its back alongside a red triangle & exclamation mark; hold down the power button & while holding power, press and release volume up. This will bring up the stock recovery menu. Use volume keys to select wipe cache partition and power to confirm. Then select reboot system now.
Let the phone boot and you're now on complete stock 6.0.1. Follow the steps exactly and I guarantee you won't have issues. Don't take shortcuts to save time (oh I can skip so and so step, do this order instead, etc.). At this point you can reboot once again to bootloader and;
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-1-angler.img
Boot to TWRP & flash your favorite MM ROM.
Notes: This method does NOT wipe user data. Any pictures you've taken, files you've downloaded, etc. will all still be there. You do not need 'cache' or 'userdata' when flashing the factory images. Skip both of those. A factory reset from stock recovery will wipe all userdata from internal storage as will fastboot flashing userdata.img. That is why we do it from TWRP before starting and skip flashing it in fastboot. Cache will build itself as it boots. So long as you wipe it from TWRP/STOCK recovery you will be fine.
That'll do it.
Edit: Just look for yourself. This post is surrounded by "bricked after restoring nandroid posts" Do not restore a 6.0 nandroid over a 7.0 ROM. It appears there's an issue with backup & restore from TWRP at this time so just don't do it. Downgrade the way I posted to avoid data loss and bricks. All of my sensors, sim, data, etc. all work perfect.
Great thanks! I'll give it a go

Okay, it's been a while for me and I don't want to mess my phone up.
I have a Nexus 6P and the bootloader is still locked, phone is not rooted, and running official 7.0 from the beta signup a couple weeks ago.
I'd like to go back to MM because my battery life has been atrocious. Now my questions:
1. Do I have to unlock the bootloader first before I attempt the steps above?
2. Where is the best place to extract the last MM factory image to use during fastboot?

Yes in order to use fastboot, you need to unlock the bootloader. This will wipe all userdata off of the phone so backup to your PC first. I just unzip everything in platform-tools.

EDIT:

No problem, glad it worked for everyone.
I have been running Weta 7.1 for a week and went back to Pure Nexus using TWRP 3.0.2-3. I went into recovery, wiped everything except internal storage, flashed the vendor image, then flashed the rom and gapps, then flashed the vendor image again. The phone booted up just fine. I never back up or restore the EFS partition.

Hey so I actually bricked my first Nexus 6p doing this but I have been fine with my replacement. The Key is to update your twrp to 3.0.2-2 (make sure you do this). I then from Android 7 did a full backup in Twrp and then in the bootloader flashed the MTC20F factory image and it rebooted just fine. I guess in Twrp 3.0.2-1 there is an efs partition problem that is causing the bricks; my old bricked nexus 6p was on 3.0.2-1. So just please make sure you flash 3.0.2-2 twrp

Soft bricked Zenfone 3 still have TWRP

I have a Zenfone 3 that while trying to unroot I have soft bricked. I can get into TWRP recovery, but after installing the tizen ROM, I can not boot into it, but can still access the TWRP recovery. Is there a toolkit or any suggestion you might have as to how I could fix this issue.

Do you have an official recovery? If yes, you can recover back your device again. Just use 'adb sideload <filename>' to do this.
I've also trying to unroot my device and end up in boot logo, but after flash the official ROM, it's finally work again. Also my data (/data) isn't formatted.

TWRP supports adb sideload but there's no point flashing stock recovery, TWRP is superior in every way.
Go into TWRP, plug in your USB cable and it'll mount your sdcard . Copy the firmware onto the sdcard and install it. Perform a wipe cache/dalvik and reboot.
How are you removing root?

I used a app called KingRoot while I was on the bus, it caused the phone to freeze, after about 10 mins I hard reset the phone and it has not worked since.
I tried to sideload the stock rom, but it will not accept it. I think I may have something to do with the bootloader. I think my TWRP recovery could be in the Android partition, but I am unsure.

Forget sideloading it, edit the update script in the firmware, see this
thread, part 1, step 2-4.
Then copy the firmware to your sdcard (like I mentioned above) and install it. You can use the guide here, tip #4. You should read the entire guide afterwards.
if TWRP loads when you select recovery, it's on the correct partition. You'll have to reinstall TWRP after you flash the stock Rom again as it'll update recovery as well. Then create an nandroid backup, tip #2 and you're set.

Hy Wang.. I followed your guide - modified updater-script, but I can't install the stock rom .zip from TWRP.
It says "can't extract updater-binary", I tried few times thinking that the file is corrupt, but the result still same.
FYI, I use stock ROM "UL-ASUS_Z012D-WW-14.2020.1709.68-user.zip", and TWRP 3.1.1.
Please help me if you have experienced it before. Thanks
@rzahunn
I've never had that error before and you're on the latest version of TWRP so I'm going to guess it has to do with your modification of the updater script.
You edited updater-script not updater-binary, correct? There are two files with similar names
There's a detailed guide by @kyle_l88 on how to return to stock.

TWRP Bootloop
Sorry if my reply is irrelevant, but I need some helps.
I am also using Zenfone 3, but stuck in TWRP bootloop.
I cannot flash using fastboot (not detected on PC), reflashing ROM doesn't help either.
I've tried all the possible methods I found on Google, such as dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota method but still has no luck.
Restoring backup would end me in TWRP too.
@Xytce
Are you factory resetting after you flash? Clearing cache and dalvik? It will take 5-10min to boot up initially after that.
Otherwise, try the guide Rizzed referenced.....as long as you have the correct firmware and TWRP flashes successfully, there's no reason it shouldn't work that I can think of.

Won't boot custom ROMs

So far there's only a small sample, but I think there's enough of a pattern to constitute an issue. I've tried to flash the latest of both pixel experience (unofficial) and havoc, and each one sends me directly to either recovery or fastboot, depending on the order which I flash/wipe/factory reset. It's been a couple months since I've flashed anything other than an open beta update, but I never had any issues flashing ROMs.
For both I've tried:
Flash OOS. 9.0.13 (or OB13) in both slots
Flashed Twrp installer
Reboot to recovery
Flash custom ROM
Flash Twrp installer
Factory reset (tried full wipe as well)
It's at this point where I attempt to reboot to recovery to flash gapps (for havoc, not PE) I get sent to recovery or fastboot, depending on whether I reset or wipe data.
I can flash OOS and boot stable or open beta and boot into them with no problems. I've even allowed it to boot to the OOS welcome screen and went back to recovery to flash the custom ROM with the same outcome, doing a factory reset before I flash, after I flash, reboot to recover after flashing to factory reset. I've tried a full wipe in place of factory reset and all different combinations, all with the same result...
What am I missing?

I think I've had this issue also--it might be necessary to let the OOS ROM boot up as system--no need to setup the phone, then reboot yourself to TWRP and flash whatever else you want.
It was confusing to me too, and I didn't take notes, so don't know exactly what happened.
Also, maybe don't try to flash things to both partitions--just let the installers do their work as they are made to do without any extra steps.
Since you've already factory reset/wiped, it might help to skip this step also, as a trial.
Did you have Magisk before, and uninstall it first? Might help, as uninstalling restores system images or somesuch.
And, there are some occasions where a ROM flash won't reboot properly without first installing Magisk, but don't recall the incidentals of this either.
Regardless, we'll have a record if you post what steps succeeded in your case.

Everywhere I've read says to flash OOS to both partitions so if there's an issue with the custom ROM there's a fallback.. I don't flash the custom ROM to both partitions, only OOS. Also, I've tried letting OOS boot to the welcome screen, then back to recovery; I didn't do any setup.
I have magisk installed in OOS, though I haven't tried flashing it when flashing the ROMs. When flashing ROMs I've always flashed the ROM and Twrp, reboot straight to recovery, and flash gapps/Magisk. In my experience, I've been able to skip rebooting back to recovery to flash Magisk and gapps and just boot straight to the barebones ROM.
To reiterate, I use the exact same process to flash OOS and it works flawlessly; can flash the stable or open beta, no issues. It's only non-OOS that refuses to work correctly.
I'm wondering if I need to use the unbrick tool and start from a 100% clean slate .. something may be borked that an unbrick may fix, it's about the only option left that I can think of...

Thank you for the ideas
I ran the unbrick tool and still encountered the issues, but I did learn something, and also finally got havoc to boot, although I'm still unsure exactly what I did. I'm not saying I figured out exactly what is wrong, and I can't say I know the exact solution, but I CAN say I believe the solution lies somewhere within this wall I'm typing.,..
I noticed this earlier but it didn't actually click until I still got the same error after the unbrick tool... I would always boot correctly to OOS on slot b, so after every successful boot, I'd go into recovery and try flashing.. now taking into account the fact that I flashed OOS in both slots is important because on a successful boot, which would be slot b, I'd go into recovery, still on slot b, so that's the first slot to get OOS. Change slots, flash to slot a, then boot to OOS. If I'm remembering how a/b partitions go, since slot A was the last slot to flash, it would automatically fall back to slot b to boot. Hence the successful boot. Go back to recovery, flash havoc on b, it would attempt to boot from a, and fail.. go back to recovery, I'm back on slot b to start the process over.
After still encountering the problem after the unbrick, I really began paying attention to the boot slots. Once I was paying attention to that, I attempted to manually boot from slot a after flashing OOS to both slots and I got sent to a screen that says Qualcomm crashdump mode. Power +vol up/dn to force a reboot, then volume down until the bootloader unlocked splash screen to go to recovery.
Now this is what I think I did... After figuring out it was the slot, I believe I formatted slot a, and due to the way it fell, slot b then began being the slot to mess up so i made sure to flash havoc/twrp installer in the slot a and it booted right up. Went back to recovery to flash magisk and gapps, and finally a factory reset. Boot from slot a, and here I am.
There were times where I would get stuck in fastboot, boot to recovery or system would just send me to fastboot.. I guess that also meant I was booting from the bad slot. I tried fastboot boot twrp.img, it would send it, but fail to authenticate. Fixed that by doing fastboot --set-active=b then I could restart back to recovery no problem.
