Lost SMS MMS Flashfire - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently did a full backup with Flashfire Pro due to needing to return to stock. I usually use SMS backup though this time I thought my messages would be in this full backup.
After Getting up and running with the new OTA, I did a restore of userdata, cache, and internal storage. Everything came back fine except there were no mms or sms. Call history and everything was up to date. I finally had to restore my SMS backup that was over a month old.
Is there something else I should have restored? I still have the full backup and I would appreciate advice on getting my months worth of texts back.
Nexus 6P
Project Fi
7.1.1 Security patch level 1/5/17
FlashFire Pro v.0.53

I realize this is in Nexus 6 section . . .
I would like to ask the same question:
Did a full FlashFire backup of my Samsung sm-g930v (Verizon variant Galaxy s7). Everything including all my wifi ssid`s & passwords, all personal app data including logins, etc were saved. I actually saved the backup file to the sd card, rooted & installed flashfire on another sm-g930v (same build,G930VVRU4BQG1), & it was like it was the same exact phone:good:
All except no sms/mms restoration, The call logs were there right up to the very last one.
Also I noticed during the restoration process, after the md5 hashes were verified, while the data was being written, several red lines of logging appeared on the phone`s screen, then it continued, finished, & rebooted.

Any problems moving to 4.3 after restoring apps and settings w/Titanium Backup Pro?

I'm thinking about finally moving to 4.3 using a custom ROM (haven't decided which one yet). I have Titanium Backup Pro and plan to restore all my apps and settings after the upgrade. Is this process likely to end in a stable system? I don't have the time and patience to go through installing and configuring everything again, so if it's not a dependable process I might as well wait for the OTA update (and deal with Knox later...)
Thanks!
Don't worry, this is what I did all is fine.
Before anything, make a backup of your internal SD (just in case), EFS backup and all apps with Titanium. Then in Phils recovery select option to erase everything for new ROM flashing. I also did manual wipe of cache & dalvik just in case. Don't worry, your internal card won't be touched, but always better safe than sorry. Then flash MJ5 kernel, and finaly flash your chosen ROM. Then you can restore apps from titanium. I had like 2 apps that didn't work at all after restore, probably incompatible with 4.3. The system is stable 100%. Never had a reboot.
Thank you Dalanik. This is very encouraging to know.

Did you try it? How did it go?
I had faced a lot of issues when I did this recently. My contacts and message apps started to crash. Could have been OS problem no idea, but I was losing all my messages and my contacts. Ended up using super backup and import/export feature. Then on TB i restored only the apps and not the settings or system data. Now its perfectly stable, no crashes whatsoever
If you erase phone completely for flashing, contacts will be restored automaticaly from google contacts, but I'm afraid SMSes won't. That's another thing worth backing up. I used SMS BAckup and Restore, works perfectly, although you can also use Titanium as well.

Restoring from nearby device - couldn't finish restoring the backup error

I got a refurbished Nexus 6P from the Nexus Protect program. Now I'm trying to restore the new Nexus 6P from my old one. I go through the prompts on the screen and everything looks good until the final screen when it's actually restoring the device and I see the progress bar moving back and forth. After a short while, I just get an error message saying "couldn't finish restoring the backup". I tried it about 4 times now and I even tried restoring from the cloud to see if that would work.
Anybody know why it's not restoring?
Both my Nexus 6P's were updated to Nouget 7.1.1 but I was still getting the "couldn't finish restoring the backup" error message.
I finally got it FIXED, but I selected the option to restore back up from the cloud instead of restoring from nearby device. This is what I did:
On my old device, I went to settings>Back & reset>Backup my data and turned it off. You will get a warning message telling you that your backups will get deleted. Proceed.
Then I turned the Backup my data back on. I waited overnight to make sure that my new data was backed up again. (If you know of a way to verify that your data was backed up so that you can proceed with these steps then do it)
Then I factory reset my new device and proceeded with the restore procedure.
I took the steps to restore a backup from the cloud again and it worked!
It restored the location of all my app icons and my widgets on my home screens so I was very please.
I guess the backup was old or was backed up with an older version (before Nouget 7.1.1) so there were problems restoring it, but after deleting the old cloud backup and making your phone upload a new one it works! Hope this helps anyone running into the issues I was facing.

Nougat roms instantly auto-deleting texts in Messaging following TWRP restore

I currently have 2 backups in TWRP, the first from a couple weeks ago of a CM14.1 installation, and the 2nd I just made today prior to updating my current AICP nightly build.
A while ago I restored the CM backup and remembered I hadn't backed up my texts from that period, so I download SMS Backup & Restore and go into Messaging just to check that the correct messages were there. Sure enough they were, and at a glance I could tell the contents of the first few conversations were definitely from a couple weeks ago when I had them, but I could only see for a split second because immediately upon opening the messaging app, all conversations flew up the screen and disappeared over the span of about a second as if they were being deleted spontaneously before displaying the "Once you start a new conversation, you'll see it listed here" empty inbox background.
I didn't know why but I didn't care at the time so I left it for another day. Well that day is today, as right after I made my backup before updating the AICP nightly I saw the old one and thought hey I'll try grabbing those old texts again. Same thing happened so I restored back to today's backup and rebooted, went into messaging, and the same exact thing happened, albeit I was able to see that the conversations were indeed from recently, up to earlier today, before they all disappeared.
WTF? I installed a couple other 3rd party messaging apps just to see if the SMS content was still in the database and the stock app was just messing up, but they showed empty inboxes as well. Weird thing is if I restore from the nandroid backup again, I'll reboot and sure as sh*t, there the messages are once again, for a sweet split second before whoosh, they're gone! Does anyone know why it does that? Is this a nougat thing or has anyone experienced this on earlier android versions as well? I don't care about the backup, I just want to archive my old messages, but they nuke themselves as soon as I boot into a restore.
Oh if it helps, it seems upon restoring, the adopted SD card storage is wiped as well, so apps that were previously on the SD card show a dead white link on my home screen. The portable storage section of the card is just fine though (I did the fastboot trick where you split the adopted storage 50/50 between internal and portable storage)
I've noticed the same thing. It is not just you. SMS database doesn't survive TWRP restores on N roms.
I've got another phone that would give endless "Phone has stopped" FC messages upon a TWRP restore when it was first brought up to 7.1. It needed a fix in the roms to get TWRP backups to work right with it. Just a wild guess, but could be something similar at work here.

TWRP Restore Does not Properly Restore...

Hello All!
Before you tell me to search or check threads, I already have. This problem does not have anything to do with forgetting to disable the pins and fingerprints before backing up. My problem has do do with I have already disabled/removed security before backing up my nandroid. I check/select everything that I can to backup and it successfully completes. When I go to restore, everything looks to be properly restored, but alas, there is a problem. When I reboot, it asks me for a password to get into TWRP (apparently "default_password). But when I get in and go to file explorer to find anything, my entire storage is wiped. Like no OS or any files. The only other issue I've had besides this is when restoring a nandroid, it doesn't complete and reboots to a bootloop.
I am on the newest version of TWRP, 3.0.3-0. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I, and anyone who has had to redo the complete phone setup/customization, do not enjoy taking over an hour to get things back up and running. Cruddy thing is I did a Titanium Backup for my apps and settings, but they got wiped.

I am genuinely interested in this because I back up on a regular basis after each security update but I have never had to restore. Now it is my understanding that even if security is disable the data is still encrypted. Perhaps I'm wrong about that but if you ever did have a password or pin to log into the phone with have you tried to enter that into TWRP?

You only need to back up the defaults... system, data, and boot.
What should I back up in TWRP?

I understand the web is full of opinions, but I've read somewhere to backup EFS? I have also read somewhere before that what you said to backup, while is plenty sufficient, if you have space, to backup everything. I followed that and it lead me to an hour plus of restoring back to how it was. I will give it a go, hoping that I never have to use it, but it will work when the situation arises.
I've only ever backed up those three partitions, and never had an issue with restoring backups. You can certainly create a backup of the EFS/IMEI, but keep it stored in a safe place like on your computer or a thumb drive. One thing I should note is when restoring a backup, make sure to also flash the correct vendor.img if necessary.
I usually backup vendor with it but as earlier indicated I don't believe it's completely necessary. As far as EFS is concerned yes I would agree with backing that up however what I do is back it up to a separate backup folder and only write it if something were to ever happen to it otherwise leave it alone. That way you don't take a chance I'm corrupting something in that partition.

I've never successfully restored a backup on the Nexus 6P regardless of what version of TWRP I used. Different builds of TWRP give me different problems but none has ever worked. I've completely given up doing nandroid backups on this phone because it's a waste of time and disc space. I never had a similar issue on any other phone that I have ever owned and am not a newbie when it comes to rooting and custom roms. What I always ended up doing after a problem restoring a backup is flash the complete factory image using the flash-all.bat command and start over with everything I want to flash.

I have the same problem, so now I've started doing a TiBU and Verizon Messages backup, after all those are completed, transfer and save it to my PC. If I have any problems, I transfer from the PC to phone and it's less headache... kinda sorta.
Restore never worked to the fullest. I tried different versions of TWRP, same problem. Restore starts a red error line in beginning of the restore process an at the end it shows ‘Restore complete’. When I restart, everything looks restored but with bugs like:
-network or sim itself is not shown
-Bluetooth, wifi wont connect
-Quicksetting tiles not responding etc…
The idea of backing up via TWRP is to get every bit RESTORED properly, but it doesn’t work.
I take a full back up before moving to update the firmware version (example MIUI 10), if I do not like the firmware then I want to go back to the previous firmware version (example MIUI 9) and TWRP RESTORE feature never works. I have to again flash the rom and then restore everything via Titanium backup.
I always take a TWRP backup of all the items available:
System
Data
Cache
Cust
Recovery
Boot
EFS
Persist
Still it never restores properly. It’s a mere time waste or the restore option to be removed from TWRP as it never worked across of its versions.
Can anyone explain me in a line, what is Cust, EFS and Persist?
I really appreciate if anyone help me understand where I’m going wrong.

Lost all my SMS/MMS when I let Google setup restore most recent

I wiped my phone and installed a new rom for a couple hours, received one text during that time. Then I wiped again, installed a fresh AICP rom, and let Google Setup restore my most recent backup from the cloud. It only restored the one message, and I lost a couple years worth of messages.
Is there a way to restore my messages from the cloud backup, to a certain point-in-time?
Thanks!
Mike

If you go back to stock and restore that backup you should get all your messages. I had the same issue on ROMs that sms was not restoring. Even though Google does a pretty descent job backing up I use sms backup and restore also. It's free and can backup anywhere (google drive, device, email etc.) That way you never have to worry again.
