No Cellular Service - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 6P has begun to periodically lose all cellular service (Verizon LTE) for no apparent reason. If I reboot the phone, service is restored. Turning airplane mode on and off doesn't help.
My phone is currently running Android 7.0 build NBD91V with the most recent patch on 12/5/16.
Has anyone else seen this problem or know how to fix it?

It's a known issue. If you Google it you’ll find others including myself with the same problem.

The OP of that link is on Project Fi and on different carriers than you so it may not be a complete match with your issue. The new January update N4F26J is designated specifically for Verizon devices and includes a new baseband version (radio 03.79). The radio apparently resolves some issues specific to your carrier- so I would start there. Update your phone and confirm you are on the new radio. If it was working fine earlier, you may also want to try reverting to an earlier radio from a time when your phone was working normally. I would also recommend trying LTE Discovery. The free version has most functionality you would need to identify all the towers in your area, what bands are available and the signal strength of each. Good luck. :good:

So I had an interesting experience with the same thing. Was running a custom rom that is very close to stock and updated to the most recent security update. Shortly thereafter, my carrier connection would drop (didn't notice at first because if I was connected to WiFi, it would be hard to tell). Only a reboot of the phone would fix it, for often no more than an hour or 2. So I started by wiping the device. Then I went to a different custom rom. And then finally, I went back to stock using "flash-all.bat" from the factory image. But alas, the issue continued. The last thing I did, which seems to have resolved it so far (12+ hours without a disconnection), was to relock my bootloader. Just in case it helps someone else. Is it possible that the new radio + an unlocked bootloader is causing the issue?

[Q] Upgraded to Android 5.0, Lost LTE

I just upgraded to Lollipop and lost LTE. I have EHRPD 3G only.
I am rooted and on Extreme Syndicate 5.0 Lollipop.
I have tried the usual items found in Google:
1) Removed SIM, rebooted. Put back SIM
2) Checked LTE settings under mobile networks (Global, also tried CDMA/ LTE)
3) Checked APN (vzwinternet, internet and VZWINTERNET)
4) Tried basic toggling of airplane mode, data, etc.
I am trying to avoid going back to kitkat stock and working back to lollipop.
I am hearing that a new SIM may be required but I have not gone that route yet and would like to resolve right away rather than taking a day for a SIM to ship to me.
Any help is appreciated.
Have you factory reset the phone after the update? It would be something to try.

I tried numerous things. Right now my LTE has come back however things are kind of strange when I reboot, but at least ultimately end up working. I have a new SIM to throw in there when I lose things entirely again. I'm now sort of convinced that the problem is the SIM as I have tried a few different ROM's including stock unrooted KitKat and data always acts the same. I'm now on 5.0 and it's again the same.
Hello, after upgrade to 5.0 my s5 verizon, i lost 4g, but on 4.4 it worked fine in russia

Question about Flashing new radio image

I have been getting terrible radio drops on baseband 03.84. I am on Oreo with the latest November security patch. I downloaded several older radio img files to try. I also found an app called FlashFire. Is anyone familiar with it. I wanted to know if I can flash the radio img files using it without problems. Thanks.
Don't do it with flashfire !!!!!!!! I did flash the bootloader two days ago with flashfire and had a hardbrick. ( Like a lot of other people trying to flash bootloader and radio with flashfire )Yesterday I spent a lot of hours of reading and with big luck i got my phone unbricked, but that's not always the case.
Don't be lazy like me, flash bootloader and radio only with fastboot to be safe. For the rest flashfire is a good app.

No. FF is a great app for updating your phone(s) every month, retaining root and custom recovery. That said, it is not intended for flashing protected partitions (like bootloader and modem) and Chainfire explicitly points this out in the documentation. A different radio is unlikely to help you. You may want to lay out what carrier you are on, your geographic location and what you have tried already such as swapping SIMs from a different carrier, and signal data you get from a app like LTE Discovery.

Thanks to both posters for stopping me from using Flashfire to flash radio. I appreciate your questions, if you can offer any help that would be great. I'm on Verizon, in the Orlando Fl area. I have tried new sims, the one I have now was a replacement from about 2 months ago. I looked at LTE Discovery, sitting in my living room I'm at -114 dBm. What other data is useful for me to look at. The issue I have is many times I go to 0 bars of signal and calls drop or I can't connect to call. Looking for any solutions to this. I like my 6p, had it for 1.5 years, I would like to keep it longer but not if it keeps performing like this on phone calls.

Very few on Verizon complain about signal strength. They do rightfully complain about the many other things the Red Devil does, but signal strength is usually not one of them. I've found LTE Discovery to be useful in knowing what band I am on, what tower I am connected with, best signal strength location within my home/office/pub, what bands work best and when I get stuck with ****ty signal.... I can reset the network and it locks to a different band. This happened at my local pub all the time until they got excellent wi-fi. The phone would not give up (release) a poor connection and search for a stronger one. You can play around with Open Signal as well. They have a signal strength coverage map that is real-time crowd sourced rather than carrier propoganda. Once you have collected your data trends, you could then also try a different carrier for a day or two. Those Verizon specific images/radios simply contain additional support for Verizon specific add-ons like VVM and HD calling, etc. They won't make your signal better.

Thanks, I flashed an older radio and don't see any improvement. When I use LTE discovery and cycle the radio on and off it changes the band and my signal seems stronger, but then it reverts to the weaker band. Is there some way to lock it to the stronger band?

I've read of a root hack but can't remember where exactly. I think it was in one of the Indian threads. I'll look around. I still believe this is probably down to the carrier vs. hardware.

Do you have any efs partition backup with TWRP, if yes, try to restore it with TWRP.
Edit: for some guys it help to remove simcard and reboot the phone without, don't ask me why.
Edit: and some solutions from a n6 thread with the same issue, if the issue still persist

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly, but the modemst1 and modemst2 partitions are not part of any Google image, they are protected and unique to your phone. You may or may not have backed them up previously with TWRP. If you did back them up, you can restore just those two partitions. If you did not back them up previously, you can try deleting them and letting them rebuild as in this article.

Still facing the same WiFi loading issue and disabled on the main screen. I really dont wanna give up on my N6P its a lucky one for me
I hope I get the solution early for this
Thanks btw

So you used the fastboot method and deleted the partitions, and it completed on reboot (re-wrote) the partitions... what confirmation did you get it was successful?
At this point, and in order to rule out hardware, you should fastboot format system, userdata and cache. Use the latest 8.0 full image with the included flash-all.bat script. Until you do this (including formatting the partitions) you cannot rule out the motherboard. If this does not fix it, the problem is hardware related and not worth repairing on a used 6P.

Updated Verizon G950U now no service

I have a stock Verizon G950U (on Selectel prepaid but that shouldn't be an issue) and used the PC software to install the latest update NRD90M.G950USQS2BQL1
Immediately following the reboot I have not have service since. My sim works in other phones, took S8 to Selectel store and they confirmed working Sim and said it was a device issue. I have factory reset and even restored the firmware with the software again. I don't get a ton of service in my rural area but was able to activate an old S3 that I had lying around. The Selectel store is also in a larger city with plenty of service.
The radio is on as it shows bars, scans and shows networks, but absolutely will not register manually or automatically.
My limited knowledge and searching says that I cannot directly downgrade the firmware to an older working version. I've rooted older devices but last I played with it KNOX and the risks of bricking are getting ridiculous unless someone can specifically state otherwise for this device and link me to videos and direct download links.
Thanks in advance, I'm pulling my hair out. Short of rooting or waiting for the next update to hopefully fix it I don't know what to do.

Ok so its not a corrupt EFS issue. have you gone into netwrok and switch to global or anything....
Does it show your phone number in the info as well That will tell if its reading sim or not
It does show my number from sim after booting up without a sim and then inserting. I don't see any global settings. Again from the update no settings changed, since then I've wiped to factory settings numerous times.
I can't find a fricken stock rom file anywhere for crying out loud, just loads of register spam sites.
I think I'm downloading an Oreo 8.0 rom but can I downgrade later and again where's the dam file?

Don't worry about Knox, it's not possible to trip it on a 950u
Tried flashing to BQK5 with moderate success. Passed with Odin (which csc file should I use?) but on reboot it stalled at 32% when installing. Rebooted and after flash screen updated android and showed BQK5 but all my data and apps were there so i likely screwed something up. Installed sim card and momentarily showed 4g and appeared to register but at reboot did the same crap with no service.
Called Samsung prior to flashing and no surprise that was a colossal waste of time. I'm not paying them $200+ to fix an unrelated issue with the back glass that cracked with a case on and phone has never been dropped. They did say that they're partnered with best buy but that's two hours of driving for me...I'd fix the back glass myself and try to get them to give me a new phone if it came to it.
Verizon software shows an update now so I'll let it download (again...takes all night for some stupid reason) and vainly let it flash to current version.
I think I found the Oreo 'final' update so might try that...looks like it installs off an sd card if I can find an old one.

S8 Active SM G892U, was Sprint, unlocked and on T-Mobile. Sprint Update broke Volte

Hi,
I have a Samsung S8 Active G892U which I bought used as an unlocked phone. It's clear it was originally a Sprint phone, but I have been using it with no problems on T-Mobile USA. It was running firmware G892USQS3BRI1 until today
Today I was prompted to install the latest software update ( G892USQS3BSA1 - this was clearly a Sprint update; it appears my phone is still getting Sprint updates, which makes sense, as it has Sprint firmware).
There was a warning on the Software update screen that the update would stop Volte working, and I would therefore no longer be able to access data while in a phone call. I (foolishly!!) assumed this would not affect me as I was on T-Mobile. I regularly use data while on the phone, so I know there was no issue with this previously.
The upgrade has completed, and I can no use data while making a call (I am in a LTE area at the moment). There is no sign of any option to enable or disable Volte anywhere in the settings menus
I did try going into Settings->Connections->Mobile Networks and changing Network Mode from "Automatic" to "LTE/CMDA." (as various forums indicated that doing that would provide a menu where I could re-enable volte)
This made the situation worse - I could no longer make calls. I have changed back to 'Automatic' , and can make calls again, but still loose data connectivity when making a call.
Is there any way I can restore my previous ability to use data while calling?
I am wondering:
a) If there is a way to renable Volte without reflashing the phone (that would be preferred)
b) If I do flash the phone, what would be the best firmware to go to - Sprint (presumably the previous version), T-Mobile or something custom (I'm clearly concerned about bricking the phone here)
c) It's several years since I've found myself re-flashing a phone - I see lots of references to "Odin" as the tool to use - is that correct, and could someone point me to the best guide on using it?
Thanks in advance..
You can flash the Sprint latest firmware over the current firmware and I think that should do the trick because I did it and so far so good but proceed with caution I have no experience in dirty flashing but as long as you just stick to the AP file and don't load the bootloader etc I think you should be safe from bricking because as far as I know when the boot loader is gone you can't repair anything

Instable network signal

Good evening,
the problem my be known, but till now, I have not found a thread where a solution is presented. Now let's dive into my problem. Some days ago, I experienced the problem, that I am frequently using my network signal. Till that time, I was using the Firmware version 10.0.6 and the RR 7.0.1. I thought, maybe an Firmware update would resolve this issue, and I flashed the Firmware version 10.0.7 but the issued did not get fixed.
Yesterday I did an clean install of the ROM with the following steps: Firmware 10.0.7->ROM RR7.0.1->recovery TWPR->reboot recovery->Gapps->Magdisk->reboot system but even now I'm loosing my network signal from time to time. Is there an solution for this problem? Tomorrow I want install the SyberiaROM in order to verify if the problem is still present.
What could be reason for this problem? I already checked my IMEI numbers and both are matching with the sticker on the phone. Could it be, that my SIM tray is defect?
I had that problem and tested everything... Had to change my service provider to get stable signal.
You can try installing stock Pie, then downgrading to stock Oreo. If signal is good on Oreo, it is not a hardware issue. But if issue is still there, try changing your carreer. Still don't work? Bring your phone to the service center.
Sent from my Mi A1 using XDA Labs
Since January I am having the same problem, I can not make calls or receive them either.
After I installed the ROM clean the problem is still present. When I lose my signal, I can hit the airplane toggle twice and then I get my signal back. It's not really an workaround.
