How Do I Swap SD Card For Larger Capacity One - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a 2GB SD Card in my phone and it is almost full. I have a 4GB available but I am not sure how to swap them over. I have all sorts of data on the card including apps. Any time I am offered the opportunity to move apps or data to the card I have accepted so I have no idea no idea what is on there.
What is the best way to do this?
Rob

What is your mobile, what rom you are using

1. Connect the MicroSD to your PC, either through the phone's USB connection, or by removing the card and placing it into your PC.
2. Copy the data off the card.
3. Change cards.
4. Copy the data to the card.
I'm curious as to why you're using so small a card however. I would be using a much larger card, at minimum 16 or 32GB.

^^ what he said.
I used that method too and it worked. But it was with a different phone, so results may vary.
In any case, you can move your apps back to your phone if it needs be. Then the only data that should be present on the SD card will be your music/pictures or whatever else you have on there.

The bast way is to pull your card out, plug it in to your pc and copy all your files including hidden files on to your new bigger card. Than put the new card back in to your phone. Job done. That's the best way. If you copy your files while phone is connected than you want copy everything and you want copy hidden files such as - .android secure

HTC HD2 SD Card.

My HD2 came with a 2GB SD card with various stuff pre-installed particularly Co-Pilot which I haven't tried yet but intend to. I'm planning on purchasing a larger SD card at some point.
My question: What would be the best way to transfer what's already on the 2GB card to a new card?
Thanks for any/all suggestions.
ensure you are showing all system and hidden files, then drag everything off your old card, drag everything to your new card, job done.

Thx for the reply.
When you say - drag everything off your old card, drag everything to your new card. - I would have to copy everything off the old card and store it on the phone somewhere until I insert the new card, then paste over to the new card? Is that what you mean?

no, do it from the pc. Either use a card reader if you have one, or connect the phone to usb in hard disk mode, browse to it, select everything, drag (cut, paste, copy, however you preffer) into a folder on your desktop.
Swap the cards over, reconnect the phone with new card in, and reverse the process.

Thank you much appreciated. I now see what you mean.
no worries. Dont forget to show hidden and system files.
When you insert the new card into the HD2 and switch it on again - will it be automatically formatted? If not, or if you do it using the PC's card reader - what format is expected? FAT32? Thanks!
it will probably be formatted already, but i always format them myself, FAT32, just to be sure. If you are planning on playing with android on nand, you probably want to set up an EXT partition now, before you copy anything onto the card.
Up 2 now, I even have no idea what this nand thing is and how i recognize it if it stands beside me at a traffic light... Nope, I'll just use the FAT32 option, although I'd never do that on a windows system. But NTFS seems to not be an option for android, right?

How to transfer to new memory card?

Got a new memory card, but unsure how to transfer all data to new card? Is it as easy as putting old memory card in pc and copying files to pc, then copying them over to new card, or is there a better option?

yep. unless you have a dual memory card reader for your pc.
old card in phone-> copy to pc
new card in phone -> copy from pc.
its what i did when i formatted my card to a new cluster size and put everything back on with no issues.

[Q] Upgrading SD card

I picked up an 8GB SD micro to upgrade the stock 2GB. What's the easiest/best way to upgrade it without messing up the various applications that are using it? Can I just drag-and-drop from the phone over USB to the new card in a reader, then swap? Or are there partitions, etc to worry about. I'm not using apps2sd or anything special currently.
there shouldn't be any partitions. i believe if you just copy/paste everything over, it should be fine.
Thanks, seems to work well.
I decided to first format the card in the Aria, then drag over the files and swap:
Menu->SD card->Unmount
Remove original card, insert new one
Menu->SD card->Format
Remove new card, insert original one
Attach USB, go into disk mode
New card in PC
Drag and drop all but .android_secure and LOST.DIR (which were created by format)
Eject, unmount, etc
Swap cards
Good to go!
well done.
I am receiving my Aria this week and want to immediately swap out the 2gig card for a 16gig card I own. Can I do this before I even power up the phone for the first time? Is there anything on the 2gig card that the first boot needs?

Will this work if the SD Card has partitions? I want to upgrade to a larger card. I want to make sure all apps move and work properly.

New SD card help.

I am getting a new 16 gig class 6 SD card for my dhd and wanted to know the best way to move my flies over from my current one with out losesing any thing?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Google the program SyncBack Free. Its excellent at moving large directories and files.
Easiest way.
Connect to computer, copy everything off sd card, copy everything to new sd. easy as.
Yep, connect to a pc, copy all from old SD card to pc, then from pc to new SD card. Worked for me all the time.
I use simple backup to keep a regular backup of my SD Card by mounting USB to my ubuntu box, so install your new card in the DHD then restore Simple backup

android folder on sdcard is not readable.
data folder on sdcard is not readable.
lol.
should be visable if you use a card reader as opposed to just plugging the phone in via usb?and make sure that folder options in windows is set to view hidden files and folders?
I've just tried with mine and I can see the Android folder and the .android_secure folder.
I think DATA is on the phone itself not on the ext-sd?

not sure, but usually the difference between sd cards is due to read/write speeds. best thing to do is read reviews from wherever you're buying the card and see if there are any from people using the card you've chosen with your device (or similar, like another mobile phone at least). if there are lots of reviews saying that it fails after a while, or that it is slow on their phone etc, then look for another one?
I have a Samsung branded 64gb class 10 micro sd xc (with the same "I" and "1" symbols as the one you've linked to, expect mine is plain black and samsung instead of sandisk. never had any problems, except for when i chose a custom rom that was not compatible with 64gb cards. but on stock rom it works perfectly, and even on other roms it will work fine if it's formatted on pc first with fat32 formatter.
