Hi! Could you explain a little bit more about this tool. What does it do? Does it unlock bootloader? Does it flash TWRP? Does it root? How? Thanks!

Hello, this tool unlock bootloader, install twrp and root your phone but you have to manually download twrp img and superSU zip.Now i am working to do this automatically.. I write it in batch and just using adb commands. Soon i will upload the code in github, it's a very easy code at all.
I am here to help everytime you want .

Why is this a thing? Why not just stick to the tried and true method of unlocking or use Nexus ToolKit?
v.0.0.0.1 ? What?

No, it isn't bad. But usually when someone makes a tool it has a high level of flexibility and the program is usually very dynamic. Yours is like 100% static. It's like written in stone what the program is going to execute so that makes this program not user-friendly at all. To be honest with you, it's a nice try. I mean it proves you know and know how to use various batch functionalities. But it's nothing to write home about. I'd suggest diving into something like Java or Python and let the user decide more options so eventually you have a dynamic, but very robust tool for people to use.

thanks for your contribution, everybody started somewhere and there are tons of folks who want a quick no frills method of rooting phones of all makes, Ive done rooting for $ for folks who dont want to learn how for whatever reason and woulduse a tool like this to just get the job done quick & easy.
keep plugging away at it add as much functionality as you want, people just like to troll and down anybody on the 'net but would never have the balls to do it IRL.
Ive been around this forum since before android and have seen it grow, I wish people would be more appreciative and troll less, maybe this tool isnt for you, but it may be just what somebody else is looking for....
I know how to root and have done it many times, Im about to root a bullhead and im glad this tool is here, why do it by hand if somebody else automated it?
work smarter not harder.

Hi! Thanks for encouriging @dimkyr developing a easy-to-use and useful tool like this one. I think you're 100% right! :highfive: Did you try it yourself? OP, on how many devices did you test your tool? What about drivers for Windows? Could you add some screenshots? I'm trying to root my N5X (MM-MDA89E) and I just can't. I've successfully unlocked its bootloader with NRT, but NRT keeps failling when rooting (tried in my PC with Windows 10, in two other PC with W7, and other PC with Xubuntu) :crying:. I'd be glad to test this tool if it's 100% sure! I WANT ROOT! In case you don't notice, I'm a noob! But I can't afford bricking my new N5X. Thanks!

im on linux atm so no i havent tried it, if the toolkit isnt working just do it manually, follow a walk thru to the letter take your time, as long as u follow instructions for your build you will be fine(settings>about phone>build number.... mine is NBD90W which is 7.0 security patch level 0ct. 5,2016)
doing a root tutorial that matches your build will prevent most if not all of the hiccups that can come from incompatibilities in roms that are more complex than a noobie rooter needs to know.

Yep. I would suggest 2 things. Get the uid, then flash a full update rom to 3.2. Then ota it to ics. Am mobile now, so you get the ball maverick!
Those demo roms are missing half the stuff. Not sure whether he has ext sd card access. Might have to euu him. Hence uid.

Hi, thank you all for your replies I am still having a hard time fully understanding everything like I said I am new to android. What I do know is it doesnt have google play which is my main concern. Kernel version 2.6.36.3 if that helps anyone its not bricked, I wouldnt mind flashing it if that would fix the problem and make it like a normal tablet version. Whats a UID? Where do I find it? Thanks again for your help

Well we will try and keep things simple for you, which isn't easy with this particular android device but the very first thing you should do is to retrieve your CPUID. This is imperative. If anything ever goes wrong this CPUID is needed to help you unbrick.
First we need to set up your PC to be able to communicate with your tab, so we need some drivers. This whole process works best with win7/vista/xp so if you are doing this on win8 you may have some issues. In saying that, if you're a Linux user, then thats even better, so please say if you are we can bypass a heap of stuff!!!
Head over to Acer Support and download the Acer drivers here Run the .exe to install
Download the usb drivers from here extract to a folder on your PC (desktop).
Once your drivers are installed check they are installed correctly.
1. Grab your micro usb cable and hook your tab to your PC (u should hear windows make the new hardware connected sound. Then you should see the 'new hardware wizard' attemp to install the Acer Drivers. Hopefully everything should install correctly.
2. Now on to test the usb/adb drivers. The files you extracted to your desktop. We aren't going to do anything as such with these, they just need to be on your system somewhere.
So, when you are ready.....right click the extracted folder (hold down shift key at the same time) You should see the context menu with an option to
"Open command window here..."
3. When the command opens type the following with no quote marks:
"adb devices" and then press enter.
4. You should see "List of devices attached....and a series of numbers/letters here like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
this is your magical CPUID! and it should have 15 characters - write this number down and guard it with your life!!!
5. If you don't see this window, it means your PC does not 'see' your tab.
Try a different micro usb cable and make sure the cable is firmly connected, try a different usb port on your PC.
Well, thats your first lesson of the day
Once the drivers are setup correctly, we can move on to getting your tab upgraded into some ICS/Jellybean goodness!
Good luck with lesson 1, ya got any probs or u don't understand something, just ask
dibb

Not that I am aware of. Gonna need a PC with windows XP or 7. Mainly because most of the apps we use are windows based. And I wouldn't trust a windows emulator. Also, acer drivers install is windows based.
Do you have access to your external SD card? Will need to know.
The demo unit is the same as a regular 500. All the same hardware. The difference is the ROM they install. If you have access to your external SD card, it will make the process a little easier. Basically just put a full update rom on it, and reboot it via recovery.
But.... UID number we must have, just in case things go south as dibb said.
So check access to external sd card. You can do this by going to Settings>Storage and check.
Don't worry, we've done a couple of demo units in the past.
Mac's.....pffffttttt.....

I told you we have dealt with Demo units in the past.
Go to;

You;ll need to read the posts....
Install the old Iconiaroot apk
Install Acer Recovery and let it install a CWM (custom recovery). Probably the oldest version.
After it's done, Flash a version 3.1 ROM
Let it OTA all the way to ICS
This of course is just another option. This is the old original way before version 3.2.

Well, that figures..demo unit... EUU time.
Basically, you are going to need a windows PC with the acer drivers installed. The whole process will take about an hour, so make sure your tablet is charged fully.
Get the following files;
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560 scroll down to the EUU, and click the box "show content". Select the torrentz file. Yes, it's torrentz, so you will need a torrentz app installed on the PC. If you don't want to deal with torrentz, let me know, and I'll check my drives nd see if I have the package.
2. go here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1624645
Go to the bottom, and download the "usbdeview". There are 2. 1 for 32 bit windows, and 1 for 64 bit windows.
Extract both of those above packages to a folder on your pc.
Now, make sure on your tablet, you have USB Debugging set to ON (look in your System Settings, as I can't remember exactly where on HC 3.0). Connect yer tablet to PC and make sure you have no errors. If everything is good, unplug, and plug it back in a few times just to be sure.
Now, with tab connected, run the USBdeview app you extracted. Should give you a long set of numbers and letters. Write them down, or save in Notepad. This is your UID. You can close the app
Next, with tab still connected, run the EUU executable you extracted. Just follow the steps exactly as they say. This may take awhile. It'll probably ask for that UID number at some point.
When it's all finished, you should have to restart the tab, and the first boot will be somewhat long (10+ minutes or so). But it should boot into a fully working 3.0 HC. Which is crap by the way . You'll need to OTA, or contact us for advice.
Good luck.
MD

try this EUU it will upgrade you to HC3.2.1 - its pre-rooted and will give you a custom recovery as well. Theres a readme with instructions included in the zip. As with any EUU you will need your cpuid to use it but usbdeview is also in there.
while you are waiting for this to download try rooting your current rom with this then install this .apk and you will be able to install a custom recovery. Once you are in recovery, the main screen will display yr cpuid too.
Hi there
Well, as we really need Interop Unlock for our Lumia phones, i decided to check this out myself.
As i already have ATF Box for a long time, i decided to buy JTAG activation and dolphin clip + lumia jigs, that i do not have to solder my phone.
Also i have ordered a Lumia 520 testing phone on ebay.
So, as the ATF Team made an awesome JTAG software update, i'm trying to interop unlock that Lumia 520 the hardware way, as just software seems to be too tough...
Well, what i did so far:
1. Freshly flashed Lumia 520 RM-914 with latest stock rom
2. Did the setup/beginning after turning it on for 1st time
3. developer unlocked it with SDK on PC
4. Made Full Dump with JTAG from dev-unlocked phone
5. Mounted MainOS partition of dump with program "OSFMount" (-->appears as Local harddisk example drive E: )
6.Loaded the SOFTWARE hive with regedit on PC from "E:\Windows\System32\config"
7. Edited the following values:
PortalUrlInt = http://127.0.0.1
PortalUrlProd = http://127.0.0.1
MaxUnsignedApp = 10003
8. unloaded SOFTWARE hive
9. unmounted dump-image
10. wrote image back via jtag
I thought it might be a good Idea to dev-unlock the phone before messing with the registry, to make sure "DeveloperUnlockState = 1" gets written the "legal" way, as the key is not available in registry before.
Maybe it's better to just modify an existing key, than adding a new one...
Well, long story short: The result is not totally satisfying.
After writing the modified image back to the EMMC, the phone is booting up, but i can NOT deploy homebrew apps that require interop unlock, like @GoodDayToDies "EnableAllSideloading.xap" for example.
But i can deploy "nomal" apps like @cpuguys "Toastlauncher" and @GoodDayToDies "Webserver"
The weird thing: If i check the reg-values via WebServer on the Phone, i can see my edited values.
So the changes ARE written to the phone. The phone just doesn't use them...
So, the good thing: phone is booting with modified rom :good:
But, the bad thing: Changes are not working.
EDIT:
SUCCESS!!!
After adding

i could successfully sideload "EnableAllSideloading.xap"
After executing enableallsideloading i could sideload latest WPHTweaks build.
Now i have 3rd tile row enabled!
awesome!
Also member @myst02 is working on interop-unlocking the lumia phones. So we decided to make this a together-project.
See his achievements here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713098&page=10 :good:

to be able to sideload EnableAllSideloading.xap you need to change following registry key:
Software\Microsoft\SecurityManager\CapabilityClasses
add: MultiSz String
name: ID_CAP_DEVELOPERUNLOCK_API
value: CAPABILITY_CLASS_THIRD_PARTY_APPLICATIONS
have fun.
I have found this during smurfing on the internet.
Dont know if this is something worth trying, but maybe it gives you some pointers or help.

Samsung Bootstrap uses some Samsung-specific DLLs as far as I know. This won't help you, tried this already on my Huawei Ascend W1. This won't work on your Lumia either I think. But its worth a try of course.
You'll have to edit the registry key I mentioned before to be able to sideload EnableAllSideloading.xap. You need to load the SOFTWARE file from Windows/System32/config again into your registry and edit following key. Maybe try using a registry editor on your phone before using the method you described above, but I don't think that this will work. So, you probably have no other choice than opening up your device again and edit the SOFTWARE reg-file. Then sideload EnableAllSideloading.xap and you'll be able to sideload pretty much everything you want.
Question for more experienced devs and hackers:
Is there a registry tweak or some settings anywhere else on the phone that we can access though JTAG and that allows us to boot the phone (Lumia in this case) as a mass storage device with full filesystem access? Like on the Huawei Ascend W1. This would simplify the process of changing registry keys a lot.
Best regards and good luck.

No. once JTAG halts the phone, it's halted. You can't just "pause" the phone, make changes and continue booting. Sadly.
So, only chance is by writing the modified dump back.
It's not for Lumia only, it's a universal method for every WP8 devices (including emulator) that could enter MassStorage mode
And the Bootstrap app is not a magic, it use the system service by Samsung to modify the CapabilityClasses registry key mentioned by above and this could be done by modify reg hive directly

exactly. I have done this on my Ascend W1 several times, but its easier, because I can enter Mass Storage Mode through bootloader.
No. once JTAG halts the phone, it's halted. You can't just "pause" the phone, make changes and continue booting. Sadly.
So, only chance is by writing the modified dump back.

I don't know how JTAG method works exactly, I only know that the device needed isn't cheap and can restore bricked phones. How it works? I have no idea, but I'm sure I'll learn quickly.
I will do some research on that soon. I'm a learning noob. :cyclops:

Me neither
Most credits go to X-Shadow from advance-box team.
Because i had the Idea of modifying the phone dump and read/write via JTAG.
But usually, ATF only supported bootloader repair via JTAG. So i contacted X-Shadow and within only two weeks he updated the jtag-application, and added Custom Read/Write to every part of the EMMC.
That's how i could dump the rom, modify it and write it back.
Absolutely awesome work from that team, just releasing a software because of ONE single inquiry. :good::good::good:
Aw crap, I totally forgot to tell you to test a pure-interop app (like the bootstrap one). You interop-unlocked but failed to capability-unlock, and most WP8 homebrew requires both so of course you couldn't sideload it. DERP
But hey, if you successfully edited the capability class of ID_CAP_DEVELOPERUNLOCK_API - and it looks like you did, or could - then you can use EnableAllSideloading to capability-unlock the phone (it just edits all the other capabilities' classes). I could probably also write a "BootstrapNokia" app if you'd like; I think we have interop-based registry functions for WP8 Lumias, which would allow (for example) making SamWP8 Tools work on your Nokia as well.
SamWP8 tools on Nokia would be great.
I'll check that monday evening, when i'm back at my computer.
I'll keep you informed

as far as i know ID_CAP_INTEROPSERVICES allow it
What's the likelihood of anything happening with the ZTE Maven 3? I understand it's pretty new but I literally can't even find any discussion on it.
I just picked the Maven 3 up today myself and I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised... It performs great considering it was only $30 brand new, and I love the fit & finish of it... Now just gotta try to be patient and hope for Lineage/ResRemix,TWRP,Root,Magisk,etc.... =)
It's apparently going to be $8 shipped from best buy on black friday. I think a lot of people will pick one up even if it were to be just an emergency phone.

No, I haven't found anything about it still. Hoping for at least roof, LOS would be a nice surprise.
I've found that QDLoader is activated in EDL mode (adb reboot edl; you will know you are in when the screen is off and nothing is happening) but I'm not sure how that's useful for us. fastboot and adb do not work in this mode. Volume down + Power button = FTM (field test mode) but I'm not sure what to do in that mode - you can use adb commands but you can't do anything special like mount system as r/w - no fastboot in this mode either. I also tried the ZTE Axon 7 tuliptool but that didn't detect anything (worth a try I guess). iRoot, srsroot, kingroot (pc & apk) don't root it in the FTM mode or regular OS. I've tried adb reboot disemmcwc thing to disable write protection but that didn't seem to do anything different. adb reboot bootloader only brings you to the regular OS. There is also a recovery, but that really only allows you to wipe data/cache and view logs, etc. (volume up + power).
There is an OEM Unlock option in the developer settings, but I still haven't found a way to get to use fastboot. Looking in the system, there are some debug scripts in the /system/bin folder, as well as busybox (toolbox & toybox included) which is interesting. The device is on 7.1.1 & security update "July 1, 2017" (any later exploits?). In "About", there is also a section called "Additional system updates" which seems to allow installing update packages from root directory on storage card?
I'm stuck there, as I'm not super knowledgeable in the art of rooting. Hopefully someone can figure this out!
Thanks for the information, Nick. I'm sure a lot of people got these for 8 bucks like I did just to play around with. I have no intention of putting a sim in it. I just want to use it as a music player with Google music. The main things I want to do are get rid of the preinstalled "locked" apps and unlock it to get rid of the activation nags. How did you get the developer options? When I tap on the Android build, I get this big N. For just over $20, I got a music player with 32 gigs for music. Not bad. I would love to get Aptx HD if we are able to get LineageOS or root it and install the codec but it's not a really big deal since I have it on my main phone. I just want to use this at work plugged in.

Tap the build number 7 times. It worked for me.
Maven query
First, am I permitted to ask a technical question about this model here? I couldn't find a thread for any sort of Q&A, and starting my own would likely take a week to get a response. If not, kindly point me in the right direction please?
Note: My question is about how to retrieve the encryption key as I adopted my SD card to internal, and now it won't read it suddenly. I believe a file named (expand%s.key) is what contained the key, and I'm not sure how it was deleted. This happened after using Zarchiver and compressing about 700 images into a .zip with ultra compression, 256-bit encryption with password. After it finished the phone rebooted and didn't read the SD card upon boot.
I'm working on a terminal-only approach to rooting using the linux shell. I've got 4 books on linux checked out from the library including a command reference that's about 800 pages thick. If there's a way to root using the command line, I'll find it. Success could take a week or two depending on how many hours a day I put into this. It's also possible that there simply isn't a way to root from the command line only. Wouldn't it be nice though?

It'd be nice if there were ANY way to root the Maven 2 or 3, I've tried pretty much every well know apk , without PC, & no root. Almost got it 1 time & started to try to remove some crapware & bam reboot.
I'm confused on the custom recovery / root thing. Seems like a chicken / egg ? Need root to install recovery but the root methods on Youtube all seem to start with them all having a recovery installed. You need to get a job but you have no experience, but you need experience to get a job...

If you want to have some basic data, the Freedompop LTE SIM shows up as an ATT SIM in this device, so it works, even w/o unlocking. can get up to 400 MB of data free per month, along w/free VoIP minutes. While that data isn't going to get you streaming, it's more than enough for some IoT stuff.
Heres a little video i made of the Maven 3 running antutu benchmark.
ZTE Maven 3 ( SIM Mobile Network) Not Working
I am trying to use a ZTE Maven 3 from AT&T(US) in Africa (gift from a friend), but the mobile network (SIM card) is not active after inserting SIM. I've tried to search available mobile networks but I get the error message "error while searching for networks" after it tries searching for about 10 seconds.
My first thought was that the phone is locked to the AT&T network, but it did not prompt for an unlock code. I have had to reset the phone several times just to ensure that it gets to read the network. NB. (I have the network unlock code and have tried using it on the phone through alternate means to no avail) Is there anything I'm missing? I'll be glad to get your ideas. Thanks.
I am working on one also, looks like it might be a while, device is pretty locked up. Spent most the day today with my kali box trying to find any weakness. so far all I have found is that can be hacked with reverse_tcp in metasploit, not much else yet. Played with some Dirty CoW but didnt get to far with that, phone just hard reboots when the scripts are executed. If anyone else working on this wants to collaborate send me a pm.
I dont log on often but I get the notifications when I get a pm in my email

ZTE phone bootloaders are very secure, unless its part of the ZTE Open project, best we can hope for is a root solution, anything else is a pipe dream or is far far away.
Also not to crush your hopes, a majority of phones now show that OEM Unlock button even though there is not much you can do. Busybox is just toolbox. However that said, If you like I can get you a list of all busybox commands on the phone.

Android related questions
Q: What is a smartphone?
A: ... just kidding, you are way past that!
Q: What is an android ROM?
A: Android Read-Only Memory. A file containing the Android operating system and its apps. The "stock ROM" comes preinstalled on the phone.
Q: What is a custom ROM?
A: A custom ROM replaces your device's preinstalled Android operating system (or Stock ROM), normally stored in read-only memory, with a new version of the Android operating system.
Q: What is a kernel in android?
A: A kernel is the component that helps the applications communicate with the hardware. It manages the system resources, communicates with external devices when needed, and so on. Android uses a variation of the Linux kernel. The kernel is the bridge between the ROM and hardware.
Q: Rooting-What is it?
A: Rooting is the process of allowing users to attain privileged control (root access) over various Android subsystems. As Android uses the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device gives similar access to administrative (superuser) permissions as on Linux. Rooting gives the ability (or permission) to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized applications that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user.
Q: What is a recovery in android?
A: In Android, recovery refers to the dedicated, bootable partition that has the recovery console installed. It is accessible with a combination of key presses, or instructions from a command line.
Q: What is Stock Recovery?
A: The Recovery that comes with your Android Device from the manufacturer is called Stock Recovery. Stock recovery can be used to flash updates from an update.zip file, OTA Updates, for factory reset etc.
Q: What is a Custom Recovery?
A: From stock recovery, we cannot flash Custom ROMs, Modules etc. For this, you need to flash custom recoveries like TWRP. Flashing a custom recovery overwrites the system recovery. Custom Recoveries have been coded to allow for backup and restore functions, selective deletion of data so you don't have to wipe everything, and modified to allow update packages that have not been digitally signed by official sources.
Q: What does TWRP stand for?
A: Team Win Recovery Project.
Q: What does OTA stand for?
A: Over The Air Update. An OTA Update is a software update that is distributed via Wi-Fi or broadband network, making use of functions built into the operating system itself.

Substratum creates a folder in your internal sd card with a flashable file that you can rescue your system.
Boot your phone into twrp if you have one and flash that file.
If you don't have a recovery installed, than just boot into a recovery and again flash that file.

Hi
Almost just a week into my first Moto phone. Paid high for it and rejected a reasonable Huawei that was 25% cheaper because they stopped allowing boot unlocking.
Very impressed so far. Hardware is great although the sleek packaging, whilst feels nice, has me ****scared until the case I've coming in the mail (cannot buy accessories off the shelf in my area, much to my dismay) arrives.
I've seen the impressive 5-post articles by Explorer 4x4. They were a big factor in my choice to pay the extra cash for this phone.
Alas I'm a little nervously unsure of my next step.
Mainly I'd like to freeze / stop / possibly uninstall the bloatware I don't want.
What is the best full backup option, is it still Nandroid?
After that, is a Magisk root the safest / cleanest option to allow me to clean out that bloat I don't want?
Would appreciate any constructive advice.
Thanks
Yes well, you seem to have previous experience in routing and de-bloating, so
1) Backup all apps with titanium backup or similar (I use titanium)
2) remove bloatware with titanium, system app remover or sd maid or the method of your choice. SD maid is good with removing remnants too.
So, nothing special in regards to previous versions. If you're about to remove some system apps, please check XDA forums if something has changed in that aspect. I have removed the ones that I always remove.
Nandroids will not work on pie due to encryption issues(for now) but Google backups will and you can backup and restore apps+data with TiBu too. Migrate is in beta stages but looks promising. Unlike TiBu it also backups app permissions.

Yes, `fastboot devices` returns the device serial number and then the word fastboot.
I can also see the fastboot oem get_unlock_data command sent to the device via a line in the bootloader logs screen:
cmd: oem get_unlock_data

I can also see the fastboot oem get_unlock_data command sent to the device via a line in the bootloader logs screen:
... however after several minutes, it's just hung. Tried the --verbose flag and still nothing :

- Do You have the Motorola Drivers installed?
- Are You running the cmd in administrator mode? Try also Windows Powershell.
Other than that, I can't think of anything right now. Many people seem to have had this problem in older moto phones, but I didn't find a solution. Some user mentioned in Youtube comments that "this problem can be solved by jtag software, replacing bootloader" altogether. But sounds like a drastic solution.

Yes. Installed them. Latest version I believe.

Yes, originally probably not but I tried this on instinct but no difference, unfortunately.

Thanks for scratching the old noggin for me.
Personally I'm unfamiliar with JTAG other than just seeing the acronym here and there. So would be an even more drastic solution for me ?
I was wondering if it would potentially have anything to do with me disabling some of the Moto apps. Doesn't seem likely given it's fastboot mode I'm writing in, rather than full blown Android.

No, that doesn't affect the thing you're trying to do.
Thought I had a handle on a possible solution:
- Remove a universal ADB driver (clockworkmod) I had installed from way back in the day
- Remove a Google generic driver
- Reinstall (repair) Motorola drivers
- Reinstall ADB fastboot
- Reboot laptop
Nothing ??
Settings, System, Developer options, OEM unlocking (Allow the bootloader to be unlocked): On
Hmmmm
Is it possible this is something to do with the phone's regional designation? Maybe Motorola do not allow unlocking in my region.
Or perhaps it's something to do with the latest software. I did update the phone. Silly me, I still feel updates are often good for security and forget how often features get corrupted or removed these days.

You are on the right track here. Clean out everything from device manager that could possibly conflict, begin from a clean slate (including SDK, adb, fastboot installation) and follow @Xplorer4x4's instructions to the letter. I know it's frustrating, but if that doesn't helplet's think of other solutions. By the way, there are two methods to install the Moto Drivers. One seems to install just the driver (v.6.40 for me) and the other the Moto Device Manager (2.5.4). I did install just the driver.

Thanks for your support. Again, thought I might have had a handle on it: USB debugging was off. Enabled it, no difference.
Back to the history a little (not in chronological order):
- Removed Universal ADB driver:
- Drivers came from here:
https://motorolausbdriver.com/wp-content/uploads/Motorola_Mobile_Drivers_v6.4.0.zip
I used the 64 bit version, not the 32.
- ADB and fastboot installer from here:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/h...ster/versions/adb_fastboot_installer-1.2s.exe
When I installed / ran Motorola Device Manager, I expected some visible GUI software but I guess I must have had the wrong expectations because all it has ever done is run one single dialog that checks for newer software for the phone and fails. I posted that in a different thread.
Aside from not starting from a clean Windows install, I think I did follow Explorer's method. But I'm not perfect though neither is Motorola, seemingly
I guess I'll uninstall the Motorola stuff and try to start from a cleaner Windows install. Hell, maybe even starting in Safe Mode might be easier.

Well, the plot sickens, it seems.
Yet again, thought I was possibly on to a solution. Found these:
Previous / temporary phones there. Uninstall those devices and surely I'm right? Nope.
Then, re-installed the 64 bit drivers. Surely that will take care of these:
Nope
Now I'm in this exact situation that the uninstalling of Motorola Device Manager 2.5.4 warned me about:
So it would see that perhaps the Motorola Device Manager, which I have not re-installed, is actually needed for drivers. I'm not even convinced the files in this zip:
https://motorolausbdriver.com/wp-content/uploads/Motorola_Mobile_Drivers_v6.4.0.zip
are actually legit at all. I decompressed the 64 bit MSI file and it doesn't look like any driver files I've seen before. No .inf files for one thing.

I think it is not needed as I don't have it installed. What's peculiar is that I probably did the same installation as you, but my device tree looks like this:
And I don't remember ever installing LeEco device drivers? Now I'm just confusing You more.

Well, it seemed to take an reboot, and installing the Motorola Device Manager (not the other drivers) but I appear to have gone another 2 steps forward and one back.
Now have that but still fastboot oem get_unlock_data hangs
Need to head to bed now (forgot to post, just previewed, last night!). Maybe I will have better luck tomorrow.
Thanks for your kind assistance!
Not sure if it's lacking drivers (and perhaps a reboot) but I've gone from three "Moto g(6) plus" devices listed in Other devices, with yellow exclamation symbols, to the same with question mark symbols.
In both cases the phone is not accessible during general windows use
Will have to keep researching about 4 to 6 hours from now.
UPDATE: re-installing Motorola Device Manager fixed the lack of files access.
I am a bit confused at what your problem is. Not sure fastboot has a verbose switch. I've never had a reason to try.
If everything works now leave as is. If you ha e issues start off by removing all drivers for Moto, and remove adb and fastboot too. Then reboot computer. Install just moto dtivers(moto manager is for older phones and Usless to us other than the drivers) and adb/fastboot. Reboot computer. Now connect phone. Then do what you need to do.
