I followed the directions in a recent post on XDA about utilizing Freeform Window Mode to see if it worked on Mate 9. Short answer is it does!
It allows you to, for example, play a video on YouTube and do something else in a different window like type a message. It's a little rough on the edges but definitely usable.
Here is a link to article with instructions if you missed it.

Yes! Don't know how to do that yet.
Here are a few screen shots to show what it looks like on Mate 9. In the screen shot with the recently used apps shown, if you touch the rectangular icon on the top of the app's frame it returns the app to the screen in a floating resizable form again.
HI @mscion
Did you use adb? Will it stay after restart if I use the adb?
Thanks,

Yes to both questions! The app taskbar, that is described in the post I reference works pretty well too. It opens a window you can scroll through all your apps and then select one to open in a floating resizeable window. One thing I noticed is that, when opening an app from recents, it sometimes hangs, not sure if that is related to the the launcher I use. The overall user experience is not as developed as what you would find on the Samsung Note devices but it is quite usable. Plus it won't pause a Youtube video if you change focus to another window. Here is a screen shot with the taskbar window open.
Just did it. Works well. Not sure if I will use it anytime soon though.

Glad it worked! Mate 9 screen is still a bit small to do much with floating windows. Same with Samsung Note series. If one can broadcast screen on a larger monitor might come in handy using a bluetooth keyboard to write a document or some other multitasking.

Just picked up Chromecast Ultra. Does a nice job of broadcasting Mate 9 screen to tv monitor. Floating windows appear to look OK so in principle you could have a desktop experience. Some pictures off my monitor.

What I want to know is how he got the clock/calendar to stay static on the background and not move when he swiped to the other homescreens - unless those were static images that were part of the background wallpaper. Great effect.
OK ... just a guess here, but having done some looking around, I think that is Typography Wall live wallpaper. It takes some tweaking to get it set how you want, but once you do, it just sits there on every screen. Had it on my DX, didn't like it that much. I think I like it now.
Very Nice
Thanks for showing us some of the things you can do on the xoom. Enjoyed.
great video. Its only going to get better
*waiting patiently*
I do have to say that I lold when that flash page didnt work..
hi i had searched the forums and youtube and i have not found any video of the xoom original livewallpaper, can someone take a video of the live wallpaper in action? the one that come preinstalled in the xoom?
it only comes with four installed. Maps, which lets you set up a map as your background (you can imagine that) holo spiral, equalizer simple, and spectrum..... none of these are new so I'm sure you can find them in some corner of the web.
They're the same as any other android device.. accept bigger. I'd video for you, but don't have the tools.
I'm currently using star field, and it it working awesome with no lag and no battery hit.

Here you go buddy...http://gizmee.com/honeycomb-live-wallpaper-for-all-android-devices
If Honeycomb gives every users a mind-blowing experience from Froyo and Gingerbread, Honeycomb 3.1 is quite a update in terms of user experiences.
It improves over quite a number of areas to fix the glitches from here and there due to a first generation OS release.
One phrase to describe it is
Smoothness and responsiveness.
I had a head-to-head comparison with iPad 2 (my friend's) and my Xoom last weekend.
While apps I can find almost what I need from both iOS and Android (tablet compatible), one observable issue is the screen and apps responsiveness. Even my Xoom at that time was overclocked to 1.5G thanks to Tiamat's kernel, it barely matched iPad 2's screen by screen browsing, web page browsing and speed of apps opening etc.
With this 3.1 update, I thought Google hit home run on this front.
Other improvements includes previous mentioned by other folks
1. Recovery boot option appears (from folks who updated "naturally")
2. Under system update , there is a button to hit "check now" , so that we don't need to change system time to force a check everytime.
3. Resizable widgets (Gmail widget tested) is very handy
4. other publicly announced improvements.
Still exploring features now, rooted with instructions from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073884
Thanks stachre!
Will post a quick review with more screenshots on website. =)
Happy xooming folks!!!
Along with your points, I like that the recent apps bar now scrolls as well.
The YouTube app looks awesome in HD.

Bluetooth sucks. My keyboard keeps dropping when the mouse is connected. Other than that this thing seems great. Just waiting for some new kernels to drop now!
The new Quick Controls in the browser are fantastic. Overall the browser is much more responsive.
I've also noticed the keyboard lag seems to be gone.
Other differences are minor....
- the selection carrot when typing is more green
- the keyboard clicks as you type
- the Wi-Fi icon shows when you are uploading, downloading
I'm sure I will find more but its only been an hour since I flashed.

I'm wondering if you guys could test and see if the portrait lag is still there?
When you are in portrait mode, does sliding left or right in the home screen still lag? Thanks!

Also in Market, you can choose "app content filter". Damn I can't select "High Maturity" alone.
Thanks jiwengan for the quick reply. Not exactly sure how I should interpret your answer though? Are you saying that there is no lag when in portrait mode anymore? Thanks again!
Can you actually rate apps in the market on Honeycomb yet?

Quick controls look just like the ones that were already present in labs.
do you still have to be rooted to use a screenshot app?
I'm liking the performance enhancements.
For the browser quick controls, just to go settings in the browser, advanced and google labs.
I don't see any addition to leave comments yet in the market though.

in labs? So what exactly changed in 3.1? People keep saying they love the new browser but i dont see it any diff?
Labs is a section in the browser options where you have a few options to alternate your UI for example. One of which are the quick controls.
And they changed a bit so they got even better. Just try them...

He got confused on your questions.
his answer number 1 which was no, meant that when you actually turn it from horizontal to portrait, it still lags slightly before changing the screen orientation..
and his number 2 was to answer your actual question, which according to him is yes, it runs smoother than before.....
I'd like to see this for myself, but I'M STILL WAITING!

Portrait is smoother, but still not as smooth as landscape on mine. The update is fantastic though. Overall performance is better. The quick controls redefine tabbed browsing to me. No complaints.
The quick controls are two "rows" thick now instead of 1 and there are a few more controls. It is more definitely different from before as I used the quick controls heavily and noticed the change instantly. Overall a much nicer experience.
Has media playback improved? I'm mostly interested in how HC 3.1 does with scene HD TV show MKVs (720p with H264/AC3).
Thanks.

Development Info
Possible future functionality:
Youtube: comments, annotations( I suspect that this can be done), description etc.
"Save video to sdcard";
RTMP video sources would be nice...(I'm not sure I can do this but will be thinking about ways)
Changes in 0.3a:
11/7/2012 Video transitions much shorter! DONE!
The process for video selection is rather long so I'm having the next video selected while the current video is playing. This cuts down on time between video's in most cases!
11/4/2012 Incorporation of YouTube related video's DONE!
Related video's on a random metric!
11/2/2012 Youtube video quality option. DONE!
This one took a little while. Had do deal with what was available on a case by case basis. Bonus: Revision3 video's obey the quality setting!
11/2/2012 Preserve last video and position for resuming. DONE!
This turned out to be pretty simple too. Just had to store some state info in the db.
This was much easier than I thought it would be!
11/2/2012 Provide "In App" button for settings. DONE!
This was much easier than I thought it would be!
10/25/2012 9 patched the background image for feed items. DONE!
I was hoping that 9 patching the background image would give me a more consistent look across multiple devices in the feed manager. It helped but not nearly as much as I would have hoped.
Changes in 0.2a:
10/16/2012 Stop Moxee from playing while the screen is off. DONE!
There was an issue where if you turned the screen off when Moxee was in a transitional phase, threads that were started before the screen was turned off would cause the app to continue to play videos. Terminating these threads have resolved the issue!
10/15/2012 Toggle fullscreen to access notifications. DONE!
This turned out to be a simple matter of adding and clearing window flags. Now when ever you see the onscreen display, you will have access to the notification bar!
10/15/2012 Worked out a few minor issues.
There was an issue were sources were not seen until they had been updated by the back-end.
Added thumbnails for sources in the feed manager.
There was an issue where if YouTube did not have a "medium" quality mp4 for any particular video it would error off.
Resolved a threading issue where if next was pressed at a particular time, there would be a discontinuity between the titlebar and the actual video playing.
Resolved a threading issue where the titlebar said it was "Loading when in fact it was playing a video.
10/13/2012 Making setting available to those without physical menu button. DONE!
According to the information provided here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11702831/android-best-way-to-let-user-access-preference-activity) putting a menu option called "Settings" in the menu will cause ICS and above to show the 3 dot soft settings button. We shall see!
Well as it turns out that if you lower your build target(ei gingerbread), ICS (and above) will auto detect and put soft settings button in the action bar. However, lowering the build target caused problems with the latest Google ads jar so I had to revert to a lower version of that, but It's all working now!! I just need to make sure that the ads are really working.

Works fairly well on my Sprint GS3 running 4.1.1.
Main problem, plays after turning the screen off.
Would love to be able to turn to portrait to get access to notifications without stopping the video.
Nice work

Running well on my Xoom (4.1.2).
It would be nice to be able to get to the original source of the video somehow, however I kind of like that you can't as it saves your from becoming distracted and not actually watching anything all the way through. In that respect it really is like watching old analogue TV.
Edit - Menu not available on the Xoom due to the lack of a dedicated (physical) menu button.

Thanks for giving my app a try! I have reproduced that it does play with the screen off and I will be working on that one. I don't think that I'm prepared to allow the app into portrait mode but what I will work on is the option to take it out of full screen mode so users will have access to the notification bar.

Thanks so much for testing on your Xoom! I suspected that the lack of a physical menu button might be a problem. I suppose it would be best to make my own buttons for those functions. When you say, original source of the video, I'm not sure what you mean, but I am considering a "download this video" button for the future and even a "cache these video's overnight" kinda thing...

You're welcome, also tested on my SGSII (CM10 4.1.2) and running fine there too.
When I said original source I meant for example being able to get to a video on YouTube or wherever it originally came from in case someone wanted read the comments or get some background info etc...

Very watchable. It's not really any different to the quality it would be on YouTube, obviously some things that were uploaded in a lower resolution may not scale up to the larger screen size so well but I won't hold you responsible for that...

If you 7 inch tablet has Gingerbread then, I think, it should have a hardware menu button. If you 7 inch tablet has honey comb or above there should be a "3 dot" software button in the bottom bar, next to the 3 buttons on the left. If however, your 7 inch tablet has no hardware button and is running gingerbread or below, that is the case where there would be a problem
If this is the case, let me know, and I'll put it on the list for 0.3a :good:

2. Switch toggles using two finger shortcut
3. Phonebook browse by letter shortcut
4. Secure box
5. Default homescreen
6. Task list shortcut
7. Google now shortcut
8. Dial *#*#3424#*#* for self diagnostic
9. Save memory by using USB OTG
10. Turn on multitouch
11. Dial *#*#4636#*#* to force 4G/LTE
12. Screenshot shortcut
13. Screen mirroring

You can do screen mirroring if your TV supports direct wifi or miracast. you can also use HTC media link. Or another cheaper option is to use MHL adapter, like the one in the video.
