Hello everyone. I currently have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and love my phone and what it does. I almost never use the stylus on it so that feature isn't important to me. I've been reading up on the Nexus 6p for months now and with tax returns coming up was thinking of biting the bullet and getting one to swap out my Note 4 for. Before I do that though I wanted to get some feedback from others regarding buying used vs new (if possible), the state of development on a device that's as old as it is (development seems to be going pretty solid from the glimpse into the development threads) and general information regarding the phone and if it's a good idea to make the switch. I use my phone for EVERYTHING. It's the houses WiFi which is extremely important but I don't pay for hotspot usage. Is that unlocked on the ROMs for the Nexus 6p?
Please, any and all input is welcome. I've had this phone for a long time and would like to get my hands on something new (even if it's a phone around the same age). Thank you.

It's a developers phone so development will always be strong on a nexus phone.
However there are a lot of hardware faults currently known with this phone and as such you shouldn't buy a used one as you won't get the warranty support from google/huawei. And you cannot buy them new anymore due to google releasing their pixel range.

So if I can find a new one I should go that route? Although Google released the Pixel and pulled them from their store I have seen them in retail stores like Best Buy still (rarely). Buying from a store should still give me a warranty through the store and manufacturer if even for a short period of time shouldn't it?
Thank you for the response.

I would absolutely buy new if you can find one in the capacity that you need. I see BB selling the 32GB version which would be too small for me. The brick and mortar store route would be the safest from a warranty perspective, otherwise it will just be covered by the manufacturer's warranty which from all accounts appears to be really piss poor. Hotspot has always worked well on my device running the stock rom (AT&T).
Also, Newegg still has them in stock. They have a mix of 32, 64, and 128 directly sold by newegg, Brand New. You just have to make sure its shipped and sold by Newegg when purchasing. I purchased mine from Newegg in March

I would need at least 64GB since I use my SD card a LOT. I assumed hotspot worked but since I don't pay for hotspot on my plan (most on xda with Sprint note 4 don't) it needs to be unlocked/modded within the ROM somewhere or an app like GalaxyTools needs to be used on the Note 4 in order to use it. Is that not a thing with the Nexus 6p?

The hotspot has never been an issue on AT&T on the N6P. Someone else will have to confirm whether or not it works on Sprint.

I think we may be talking about different things. I'm sure hotspot works without issue. AT&T gives hotspot data on their plans though, Sprint does not (well it does but it's super small). In order to use hotspot without paying for their plan there is a modification done within the ROM (not sure exactly where) that changes the way the hotspot data is reported to the carrier, it shows as regular data instead of hotspot data. I refuse to pay their insane pricing for hotspot usage when I already have unlimited data so having free usage of hotspot is extremely important. If that isn't something done in the Nexus 6p ROMS I made have to skip the phone sadly. Hopefully a Sprint user will come along and weigh in.
I greatly appreciate your input though. The lack of availability on new versions of this phone may put the nail in the coffin unfortunately, we shall see though. Thanks again.

You could go to Fi.google.com, sign up for their cheapest plan ($30/mo) and get one (I'm assuming new and get the warranty). You could cancel the Project Fi service after one month.

Not a terrible idea. Just pull the SIM out and use the sprint one I would need to order. Curious about the hotspot dilemma though. Seeing a lot of results with people needing the carrier provided hotspot plan with this phone and not so much saying otherwise. I use 200-250GB of data a month so paying for that would be insane.

If you mean new as in from the Play Store, then yes, you are correct. Third party vendors still sell them, though. I bought my brand new in box 128GB 6P from B&H Photo in December 2016 for $549, so it is very possible to buy them new, just not from the Play Store.
Amazon still sells them too, but I would be very weary about ordering from them. I originally ordered my phone from them, but they sent me the wrong color/storage size. The brown box they shipped it in was pristine when it arrived at my house, but the actual white box with the phone in it looked like a dog had chewed on it before they packed it...
You can still buy them new on Amazon as well and you get the one year warranty from Huawei. But definitely don't buy one used. You need the warranty, just in case.
I have a sprint service. If you do not pay for Hotspot, Hotspot cannot be turned on.
But, I have heard that you can if you are rooted, not tested.
There are also apps which let you and are quite popular.

Sorry not rooted but the apps should work. Search Google, many have almost five star ratings. It will be easier if you do not plan to root.

I always root my phone (been a necessity in the past, maybe not going forward though). Phones aren't cheap though and I have to be able to provide hotspot for my house so I've got to get confirmation from someone on Nexus 6P before I go down the route of getting a phone. Appreciate the input though, I'll take a look into the apps.

Looks like the build.prop editing on this phone just needs the bootloader unlocked from what I'm reading. That's very different but this is a completely different manufacturer than I'm used to.

What color are you looking for? Only black, silver, and white went up to 128GB. If you're looking to buy a gold 6P, they're only available in 32 or 64 gigs.

So here's the thing, there is definitely Hotspot functionality. It will work with sprint 100%. The question is not if the Hotspot functionality will work or not, but if you will be able to turn it on without the carrier charging you. If it has worked before, then it should work.
Also, you said you root your phone. What things do you use root for. I know some apps are root only, but what are the benefits of rooting? Am thinking about it

The giveaway took place in the C++/Game Developer panel, which discussed the use of native code in Android applications (games, in particular, are likely to use the NDK as opposed to standard Dalvik). And aside from winning some karma points from developers, Sony’s motivation for handing out the phones are pretty clear: give developers a phone that features the gamepad, and they’re much more likely to make sure their games work flawlessly with it.

Does anyone know if these are carrier unlocked and able to connect to Fastboot? I'm seeing a few popping up on eBay in the $500-$600 range and I think I'm going to take the plunge.
If they're from Sony then they're most likely unlocked phones. I can't imagine them going "here, have a phone, it only works on -network- though"
Thanks. That's what I was thinking.

Excuse me for my ignorant question but is it correct to assume that even though these Google I/O Xperia Play's are unlocked that it's only for SIM and you would still need to use Gingerbreak to get root access right?
I'm asking because I'm in the process of buying one so I want to know how much I need to tinker with it. I also assume I won't need to debrand it and that it is pretty stock no?

From what i could tell on eBay there were a couple CDMA phones.
As well the GSM ones all appear to be the exact same phone as the Canadian one R800a just unbranded so i'd guess root access would have to be done via gingerbreak, however as mine arrives monday i'll update if this is the case.

Lucky you, i ended up at $540 as my timing sux.
Awesome phone at crazy price. I also got the dock and it looks very good.
I got it on ebay for $450 (item number 120725728032) and add a 10% back in ebay bucks as I bought it before the IE9 + Window 7 8% bonus ebay bucks ended. Very sweet deal at $405 + $7 for almost overnight shipping. I think the seller didn't care for much profit and also he didn't mention R800a prominently to get attention.
It's not much thicker than X10 and is actually a little shorter. The four buttons it has should have been on Arc along with the front camera. Will be using it for a week or two before I pass it on to my son while I go back to my Arc.
I have one of these coming tomorrow (ebay, ~$500 shipped). Is there any difference in software compared to the Verizon model? Is it going to be primarily stock 2.3?
This may sound like a foolish question, but, considering these aren't widely available, does everyone think these will get proper updates from SE?
Has anyone gotten the verizon version of one of these phones? I was thinking about grabbing one on ebay before they disappear to use on my verizon account, but wanted to check ahead of time to see if the bootloader on the developer version would be unlockable. Can anyone confirm this?
I want to move back to Android after a stint with Windows Phone 8. Where can I get the cheapest price for the Verizon Note 3 off-contract? The Verizon online store has it for $700.

Try craigslist. You are not going to find the Note 3 off contract for less than $550-600.
Way too early to get it cheaper. It's a highly anticipated device so everyone is gonna get asking price for it. Like ericdabbs said, try craigslist after its already been released. There will be people who bought it then found it too big for them.
I paid $745 via Verizon website

Perhaps Verizon and Sprint still ESN block and attach to account.
GSM phones block across the board and are only attached to the original account.
I thought with LTE they would do the same. Glad they don't. It's very scummy.

I would say eBay from someone who bought one and decided it was "too big" and was too late in returning it, also check swappa.com
Craigslist always has people who buy the phone at upgrade price and immediately sell for a couple hundred off full retail. They make some easy cash and you save some. Just make sure you meet the seller at a Verizon store to verify not stolen. On a side note if you live in a marginal coverage area you can open a new account and get phone for discount price. Wait 15 days and complain about signal. They let you walk from contract with no charge. Then you just pop your sim in and bingo bango bongo. Im on my parents family plan with unlimited so this worked for me last year.
beamed from transporter room 3
Check Swappa. I'm not sure I'll be keeping my glitch-ordered white 32gb Note 3. I already bought my GS4 at full retail.
Will have to see what my first impressions are...
http://www.androidauthority.com/sprint-32gb-midnight-blue-nexus-6-565656/
Makes me wonder what the heck is going on that carriers would intentionally gimp their inventory like this.
Will they have the 64GB version available online from sprint?
sprint usually only sells the 32gb variant of these celebrity phones.
Its not a official source. Google didn't over produce the "Blue" ones as they can't even keep them in stock so there is no surplus. This is a bust article from a bust reddit post.

That's what I'm trying to do. Returned my Note 4 after 8 days because it was announced they would be carrying it. Was looking to get it at the contract renewal price, but if they're only going to carry the blue 32 (I want the white 64), then I may just go back to the Note 4 (or even switch carriers) as I can't afford to buy the phone outright for Play Store or Moto. Oh well. We'll see how true it is.

Yeah, last year Sprint only carried the 16GB Model of the Nexus 5. I end up getting the 32GB model from the Playstore but was unable to insure it through Sprint. I honestly expect the same this year. As bad as their bleeding customers you would think they would offer more variety. If I have issues activating my 64GB variant this will push me over the edge & I'm going to T-Mobile
UPDATE - Gift Card is now only $50 for upgrades thru 6/30/15 but $150 for new lines.
Only until the 23rd. But 6 months of free Google Play Music AND a $200 gift card is a great deal!!!!!! Phandroid is reporting that the Verizon N6 comes with 6 months of free GPM if you buy it by the 31st.
http://www.comcast.com/verizon-wireless.html
You do not need to be a Comcast subscriber to qualify for this promotion. Some times the gift cards take forever to get to you and sometimes you have to make multiple phone calls to get them. But eventually I got mine when I bought another device through this link a year ago.
Edited - The Nexus 6 is on the Comcast link now. To find the Nexus 6 on the Comcast link, you have to hit the "All Devices" tab at the top and then search for the Nexus 6 or filter by Motorola brand.
Thank you so much for posting this! Looking forward to using it! Would you,or anyone else, happen to know if there is a method to use with this promotion and preserve grandfathered unlimited data? I have one unlimited line and two basic lines. Additionally, my current phone is a galaxy s3 and the sim card size is different. Would taking both phones to a Verizon store and asking them to activate a new sim card negatively affect my unlimited plan? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes, I am getting the N6, just deciding whether or not to get the Verizon since Phandroid leaked the info in Verizon's system that shows only the 32GB blue one will be coming to Verizon. The good news is that you get 6 months of free Google Play Music!

I really want the white 64GB one but the free GPM x 6 months along with the $200 comcast gift card is really tempting. And I rarely if ever see the white 64GB available on Motorola or Google Play Store.

The only thing holding me back is that my upgrade is on a basic line and I am going to try to transfer it to another basic line and see if that allows me to keep my upgrade. For some reason and no one knows why, when you do an upgrade transfer through Verizon online, some people are keeping their upgrades and not getting contract extensions. Obviously it is a glitch in the Verizon system, but I would like to take a chance and see if it works for me.
When people did the transfers through the Comcast link, they did not keep their upgrades and their contracts were renewed, but they got the gift cards. The Comcast link is through the iconic portal and it must process the orders differently is all I can guess.

I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully you do get to keep your upgrade =D We are actually in the same boat i really wanted the cloud white one as well specifically in 64 gb but the $200 promotion is very tempting. Please update me with how things work out for you!

Thanks!
I will update my results on the slick deals thread. I actually edited out that part of my post that you quoted b/c I would rather the upgrade questions be posted on the slick deals thread as it really is a complicated situation and people need to read the wiki over there before they attempt any of the methods. I don't want people trying any of the methods w/o reading the wiki so it is better to keep the upgrade method discussion over there IMO.
I thought all Nexus 6's came with 6 months free of GPM. I was given it when I first logged in.

Hmm I got my N6 after that, maybe the guy I bought it from never activated it for my model?

The link says the N6 had to be purchased b/f 12/31/14 but you had until 1/31/15 to activate the offer.
Wow this is a fantastic deal! I wasn't even thinking about the Nexus but I might not have a choice with this offer. Not sure about the size of the Nexus 6 but from what I've read most people get used to it.

The $200 gift card is available for any smartphone you get so you don't have to go with an N6 to get it.
Again, it may take some work to get it, I had to make a few phone calls before I got mine and it took 3 months to get it last time but I did eventually get it.

Yeah but I think the Nexus 6 is the only device on Verizon I really want right now. If this were to extend into next month I would go with the S6 probably, but I wouldn't be too upset with the Nexus 6 either.

Sometimes they extend these offers, sometimes they don't, but I wouldn't expect them to keep the offer open during the S6 launch.
Wow, great find, makes a case for updating to an N6 on edge online vice the store.
how to they get anything out of it?

I have no idea, but I always check the comcast link first - just type Verizon xfinity in google and you hit on the link for the promo.

Only until the 23rd. But 6 months of free Google Play Music AND a $200 gift card is a great deal!!!!!! Phandroid is reporting that the Verizon N6 comes with 6 months of free GPM if you buy it by the 31st.

You do not need to be a Comcast subscriber to qualify for this promotion. Some times the gift cards take forever to get to you and sometimes you have to make multiple phone calls to get them. But eventually I got mine when I bought another device through this link a year ago.

My guess edge won't work with Comcast deal will have to be 2 year contract.. Edge is contract phone not Verizon contract

Nope, link takes me thru where I enter VZ account info and then I could select a unit on edge, and they say edge in the promotion - Copied from their site: "Exclusive Online Offer
Requires new tablet activation or new 2-year or Edge activation of a new smartphone.", just that one cant yet obviously select the N6 until Thursday ...
I want to take a look at one to see if I like it as I'm considering several phones. Does anybody sell the phone in a brick and mortar store in the U.S.?
Some best buy locations do.
Thanks. I tried the biggest one around here and they didn't have them. I'll have to try some others.
Probably safe to say, most people have bought the 6P sight unseen, and still love it. I just got mine a few days ago, and I'm very pleased with my choice, even after seeing and playing with the S7 edge in person.
I believe best buy and B&H Photo in Manhattan does if you're in the New York area
Check through the website and save the leg work of store to store.

Funny, now that I think about it I've never bought a smart phone from a brick and mortar store. But then again, all my smart phones have been Nexus and I have never been disappointed, mainly because I hate skins and love the freedom to unlock, root, and flash custom roms. IMO it's not even fair to compare a Nexus with other phones that have heavily customized Android operating systems.

I'm the opposite. I've touched and played with every phone I've used before buying it. That's what got me going down the Android road as opposed to the "i" path.
I too love the customize my phone. My Galaxy S4 isn't running TouchWiz and hasn't been since the day I got it. I don't care about a lot of the "features" that many people do, but I do want a phone that performs well, and feels good/sturdy.

What website?
I had better luck finding them at Best Buy Mobile stores, which is basically a smaller shop you'd find like in a mall that specializes in cell phone sales. They were the only store for miles that had them in stock, and I live in the Chicagoland area. That's where I got mine. If you look for nearby stores through their website, it should include the mobile stores in the results.

As you're having issues locating one physically, it might be worth you buying one from Google and taking advantage of the return policy, should it not be the device for you. It means paying up, but a full refund for a return, within the set time, would save you miles of travel and fuel costs for perhaps a small shipping fee.
