I have successfully set up a wireless VPN via my router for my Kindle Fire.
Streaming Prime video, books, etc...work.
Only item is left is downloading the apps.
Keeps saying I am in the wrong country.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Might have something to do with what you are pointing your VPN to?
I think they may be using credit card billing address. I tried to use a card issued in my country (Thailand) to purchase apps, but it didn't let me. After I switched to a U.S. card, it's been working beautifully. I don't even have to VPN to purchase/download apps (other streaming services still do require VPN though)
Hope this helps...
I'm in China and I tried PUFF SSH apk for Android system and it worked!

Once again, very useful finding. Thanks
you actually dont need to use VPN's to get apps in canada
all you need to do is go to goodereader. c0m/apps on your kindle fire app and you can download any app you want ,
they made this so that it bypasses you not being in the USA
basically just side loading in APK's via their app store
its actually a good idea

who is going to be the first to try sideloading on FireTVStick
Mine won't activate. The PC tells me it's good to go, the Fire TV doesn't acknowledge the activation. I'm rooted, IDK if that makes a difference.

Mine activated without issue. Was having a few issues playing videos though....Think I'm 1 pre-rooted firmware behind. I'll update when I get a chance and test then.
If you have Comcast or charter cable then it won't work as they block amazon from being able to use HBOgo

Some folks have. And it's menu navigation is laggy but the actual video playback is not bad (That is what has been reported here & @ AFTVNews.com). You will need to go into the Amazon website & purchase the free HBO Go app to get it added to the Amazon Account that you are using on your FireTV Stick. Then you can sideloaded. If not it will tell you, you don't own the app. Easy bypass...

It's not a IP location problem. It is a service subscription option problem. Can not be fix with VPN. There is no option to input your Comcast or Charter credentials.

Sorry to hear, still working fine for me.
I tried uninstall/reinstall...clearing cache...updating...no dice.
Spoke to soon. Stopped working for me on my Fire TV Stick. I now get a "video error: we're having trouble playing this video right now".
Anyone still have it working?
What's strange is that my Fire TV firmware is the same version as when it was working and the app hasn't update, so is this some sort of a server side block?
Is there a newer version than what's in the OP somewhere? I've been using the version in the OP here

HBO Go still works on my android phone so it's not something network related. Other video apps work fine on my Fire TV Stick.

HBOgo is working on my PC & Roku just not the Fire TV
Looks like there might be an update that fixes the issues.

But, in the picture, it says the new version is 2.7.06, but that's what's in the OP already.

I just need to add : F'n Comcast!
I can access my HBO Go on PC, Mac, Android phone and tablet. Roku and Apple TV.
Why the hell do you make it impossible to register with Fire TV? What the heck is wrong with you, Comcast? And why does this society allow it? <facepalm>
Welp, HBO Go works great run through XBMC, but won't move past the white screen from the Amazon launcher. Not quite sure why...but it works!
I side loaded the amazon HBO GO Fire TV apk and it works fine on the stick. It eve showed up in recent apps after a few mintues. It run s little slow but I read it also does on the FireTV.
Get APK Here
http://www.speedyshare.com/pP3ve/HBO-GO-2.7.06.apk
Every single time I get activation error the app will restart something like that.
Works fine on FireTV
That's odd had no issues activating.
Didn't try apk from link above but did transfer it directly from Fire TV - Fire TV stick. App works fine but navigation through menus are definitely laggy on Fire TV Stick compared to regular Fire TV.

What are you using to navigate on the Fire TV Stick since it doesn't work with the standard remote?
How do you install this? I sideloaded via ADBFire but when I launch it, it says that I don't own it and takes me to the screen to install it. Attempting to install it says that my device is not compatible with it. I am not rooted. and am running the 6220 firmware.

Because it doesn't work at all for me and I thought I saw in another thread someone say you needed wkremote app to make it work. wkremote does work for me, but it's a pain.
I just pushed the .apk from my play store phone version of hbo go to my fire tv stick. That's the same 2.7.06 version as in the OP, so not sure if what the OP posted is different, but just the same version #.

Apparently Comcast is the same. I guess after successfully holding Netflix hostage they want to do it with everything. It plays on my Kindle fire, but when I hook up the hdmi, all I get is the HBO GO menu, and then the hbo logo intro, ratings, etc., and then a black screen with a zero minutes time bar across the bottom, till it times out and goes back to the menu. The source code for the next software updates for the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick have been posted to Amazon's US source code page. I've already seen word of people receiving these updates, so they've begun rolling out.
If you install the update, let us know if you notice any changes.
Fire TV update version is: 51.1.4.3_user_514020320
Fire TV update download URL is: http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuit...ueller-ota-51.1.4.3_user_514020320-signed.bin

Fire TV Stick update download URL is: http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuit...ed89a/montoya-ota-54.1.0.3_user_103020320.bin
UPDATE:
After comparing this new update to the previous version on both a Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, I've been unable to find any visible changes. Amazon has also now updated their software page and listed "Bug Fixes" as the only change.

Hmm. I wonder if this is the cause of the new problem I've encountered. I have got two AFTV's both of which can't get any Amazon content since this weekend. I get the "Unable to contact our servers" error for the Home, TV, and Movies sections. They both can still get apps and they will download apps that aren't on the boxes. Netflix works fine. And of course Kodi works fine.
If they were supposed to get this update, and Amazon knows they are not updated, could this be the cause of this problem for me? I am in the US so I am not using any VPN to circumvent any geo content restrictions. I'm not even blocking DNS. I wonder if this wouldn't be a problem if I were blocking DNS.

It's unlikely that your issue is related to this update. If Amazon were truly going to require this update in order to view content, then they wouldn't have flipped the switch yet. The vast majority of Fire TVs have not received this update yet.

I'm not at home, but my wife is reporting that the Fire TV Stick (unrooted) won't work because of internet problems. The Internet is fine. I still was blocking the update servers through OpenDNS. I removed the block and I'm waiting for openDNS to allow the connections. I think Amazon is forcing the update on the stick. My other two rooted Fire TVs are off, so I'll have to test when I get home. I disabled the update service on those.

Thanks. It was unrelated. It seems to have resolved itself without any reboot sometime between my post and this weekend when I went to look at it again. My AFTV's are always running Kodi so I really have no idea how frequently this might occur. I'll keep an eye on it and see if this happens regularly.
also, you dont have to power cycle to reboot. hold the play/pause and select button for a few seconds to reboot.

Can anyone elaborate on how to set up a VPN on their Fire TV box/stick? Particularly with Kodi? Tweaking the router is not an option, as apparently Comcast frowns on such endeavors.

you right, that is the problem, that os on that hardware does not have vpn files. Since there is no software root for a firetvstick I'll just assume The OP did not do the hardware root to put them their. Perhaps using a router with a vpn built in will solve the problem. Otherwise look here if and when your device gets rooted.

Yes, an android phone is not a ftvstick or box. Putting a vpn in the ftv line of products is not what amazon wants to do from a business model as they have arrangements to only send content to geographic regions they have licenses to distribute such content to. Natively running the vpn client on the device without root is most likely not going to happen and don't hold your breath for an update to allow it. I have been known to be wrong before, but I'm willing to place a pretty solid bet on this one. cheers.
Hi
I'm the co-developer of VPNicity which is a Kodi add-on/VPN service so I want to make that disclosure first.
We've been doing some testing on the Amazon Fire TV2 and our add-on is working fine.
FYI: The add-on uses our 'Control' app which allows our python code (in Kodi) to communicate with the OpenVPN for Android app to make the connections, so as well as installing the Kodi Add-on, these 2 apks need to be sideloaded.
We are going to test a bit more but our code as it stands seems to work fine, at least on the Fire TV box. We haven't tested a stick.
For example, I'm in London and I connected to Netflix in Brazil to test some content. I had no issue streaming a Brazilian movie in HD via the FTV box connected to my Sony TV.
EDIT: The test was done on a Fire TV - Fire OS 5.0.5
Just thought I would share that we have confirmed on another thread in the development section that the Private Internet Access apk works on the Fire TV 2 box without Google Play services. I hope this helps.

Same here. I have 5.2.6.1 installed on my FTVS2 and while all the VPNs I tried come up nicely, nothing is routed through the VPN. I think they removed the permissions to change network routing but 3rs party apps at some point in time.
At the moment it seems, there is no way to sucessfully use *any* VPN service on a fully updated FTVS2.

Will be testing this on a new FTVS2 this week. Never heard of VPN's being blocked on FTV devices. I know the FTVS1 was missing some VPN related stuff but that was from FireOS 3 I think.
Will post back what I find. For now I would recommend you guys to uninstall & reinstall your VPN App(s) to try to see if that helps.
I have the Pia vpn apk side loaded on my stock ftvs2. Need to have a different remote to set it up though. I am assuming it is working Netflix won't let me connect when it is running. I installed Pia back in October 2016 when I got it not sure if that makes a difference.
