Anyone use Freedompop Dongle with their MTCD HU? - Android Head-Units

I have a Joying 5.1.1 (RK3188 version) which has atrocious wifi.
I got the Freedompop deal for the 20 dollar 4g wifi modem with 10gb of data and after that is is free (only 500mb though). I would like to take the sim card out and put it into a USB dongle to directly plug into the Joying HU to bypass the Wifi (which fizzes out on me all the time). 500mb is enough for me as I stream music and it would be just for Waze.
1) Has anyone attempted this? Does the dongle need to be unlocked or simply have the correct bands/frequencies?
2) Will Joying HU 5.1.1 accept ANY USB dongle? If not, is it based on bands or random?
3) I'm having the hardest time finding any dongles that work with Sprint's LTE network. Any Recommendations?
On a side note, there is still no way to get USB tether or bluetooth tethering working correct?
Thanks.

I am interested about it!

Freedompop Hotspot

Hi guys,
I have a carjoying unit with a rk3188
I currently have a freedompop phone giving wifi access to my head unit based on when it's charging using tasker and putting it in airplane mode otherwise. This works great and gives me about 15-20 days without turning my car on before the phone will die.
However, if I were to want to eliminate the need for an extra phone sitting in my car, which freedompop dongle will work with the device?
I specifically want a hands-off approach where I don't have to worry about battery levels. So, having the unit power on and off with the car is needed.
Is there a freedompop device that is compatible with the usb ports on the android head units? OBD II would be preferable, but I doubt freedompop is going to have those anytime soon.

Hi, I use a straightalk hotspot. It is solely for wifi access to the HU. It is plugged directly to the usb so it gets power whenever truck is on. It doesn't broadcast SSID for security, runs WPA/2 , set for short range and powers off when wireless stops requesting after 30 minutes. I control the access by selecting wifi on or off so to save on data usage. I got 4Gigs for 2 months for $40.
I would recommend selecting one of the freedompop hotspot, and adding it to your freedompop acct. It should work nicely.

Using my Netgear 340u Beam to connect to network with my Xtrons headunit

Hey guys,
I recently bought an xtrons headunit for my car, and I love it. I also have an ATT Netgear 340u Beam that i was hoping to use to allow the headunit to connect to the Internet. I have ATT and it is the only usb dongle I could get from them.
Normally you need a driver to get it to work, but is there any way to get it to work without a driver?
It does have a sim card, so maybe there is a way to use a different dongle with it. Any advice would be appreciated.
Or I am open to alternative solutions within the US. Have not yet found a 4g dongle that will work in the US but any ideas would be great.

4G internet on Android?? How to use 4G on android head unit. 4gdong001

Hi all
I recently ordered a Xtron 10.1" head unit. TE103AP
Question is , how does the internet dongle work on the unit?
Yes it plug in to USB , but does it just make a WiFi hotspot and I connect the radio to it via WiFi, or does it have a app like on a PC. Where the internet works trough the USB with a app , so you can see the signal strength and USSD codes to check data balance.
Hope someone has used this and can help me. I dont want to order a dongle if its just a WiFi hotspot.
Thanx
On this unit with DSP https://androidautoshop.com/2-din-s...32gb-entertainment-system.html#/26-map-europe
i just connected the 4G modem and it worked. automatically. On xtrons you might need to connecto to it by wifi
I have been in contact with xtrons support and they said wifi only
I'm not sure if that is an android (rom) limitation or a usb stick limitation
When connecting the dongle to computer, the driver software gives you option to change it from wifi to usb. The driver remembers the setting, but the stick defaults to wifi when plug into another machine
Going to do some more testing with other 3g and 4g sticks and also see if can change the default on the stick
I was also disappointed to find it only worked as hotspot. I was hoping to try and setup as dongle for data and wifi for odb
I did some testing with another 4g usb and it was detected as a modem (or whatever it is). Had to use an app from the play store to modify the apn though. As previously found with these type of headunits, the usb is underpowered and I found the usb device would lose power after a minute or two and then reconnect (also had usb dab and 4gdong001 plugged in at same time)

Which other 4G USB dongle did you use?
Which Play store app did you use to configure it?
Did you manage to make it run stable and not get lost after 1-2 minutes?
Cheers!
I had the same issue. Was not able to get my Huawei 4G dongle working on my Xtrons device..
That is why I am now using a spare phone I had. I installed the app Automate and made a new Flow.
Phone is now connected to the unit by USB. And every time I start thecar,USB gets power. Then the phone is triggers by Automate to start Hotspot.
That way my Xtrons unit as Wifi connection..Works great

Hey bud the 4G dongle is a modem the back slides out and a simcard goes in. It gives you two different sizes options small and large if you look properly. It may look like it just plugs into a USB port but the back does slide of. Hope this helps.
Also once you plug it into your Extrons android head unit you have to go to internet settings select the 4G dongle then put on the security codes writing on the back of the dongle. Make sure you have credit on your simcard or it won't work.
Your Extrons android head unit should have a built-in WiFi antenna for internet hot spot or your WiFi at your house. There's different ways you can connect the internet to your android head unit. You can even Shere your phone WiFi data to it by pairing your phone and by making your phone act as a modern.. you will have to find your phone through the head unit maybe instead of the other way round to make that way work. I find the 4G dongle easier to connect than rather trying to use my phone as a modem.
Just download PPP Widget from PlayStore, work a charm with Huawei 4G Dongles.
What SIM card/provider is useable in the U.S.?

Just been trying to figure out what provider to use here In the states to get my 4g dongle to work on my 10.1
This 4gdong001 works as lte modem in Europe? My ones says service restricted when i try to start the 4g connection into band 20 or 3!
On my case I just cloned my SIM as I have a very good data plan (30GB) and bought a small usb 4g modem (Alcatel Mw40v), I just have to turn on the wifi hotspot when at the car and the my head unit connects automatically (Atoto M6). The router disconnects when unused for some time to save the battery.
Mine does have an app but I don't really need it, I just used it for the initial configuration, been there for more than 6months now and works wonderfully (I use music stream a lot).
Dongle is working intermittently
Hello Guys,
I am new here and I have an issue with a dongle stick on a Android 8.0 head unit.
I have a Huawei 3g dongle that I want o use it at an Dasaita Android head unit. I connected the dongle and it worked fine without doing any configuration. It worked fine for one day, the next day it didn't connect to internet. I unplug and plug it in again , the dongle's led is flashing but is not connecting. What could be the cause? Thanks for helping and sorry if the question was already asked.

Strange Head unit and 4G doungle......
I think everybody had an issue.... One day everthink is working fine, and the next day nothing working....
More useres bought a USB modedm, with wifi hot spot. Set the doungle with PC. Connect the Doungle to head unit. If it is connected fine, use Modem, if not connected connect with Wifi....
WiFi dongles require expensive data plan
The issue I have with using a 4G WiFi hotspot instead of a real 4G dongle, is that I can't set the WiFi connection to 'metered'. Most apps will only do certain tasks through WiFi, to save cellular data. Podcasts, Play Store updates, offline maps, etc. can all be configured to use WiFi only.
So when I used the Xtrons 4G dongle (which has to be used as a hotspot) for a month, I received an incredible invoice from my telco. Getting a big data plan just for my car does not make sense; it's enough if it syncs only when it's parked on my driveway using my home wifi.
So if anyone got a real 4G dongle to work on an Xtrons unit (I have the PX5 Android 8), i would be interested in the brand and model. And also if the unit will see it as cellular instead of WiFi.

What connection goes out? Just 4G(what carrier)? I have been trying to make mine(United States) work with Verizon since I got it, but though it connects to verizon it never gets data. I believe it's hardcode(locked) to T-Mobile or maybe GSM in the head unit. T-Mobile worked first try with no issues. If I ever root I'll look to swap out some system packages to see if that works, but in the mean time it's more pet peeve that it sees it but won't work as I have a spare verizon sim with shared data just doing nothing. I have my hotspot connection to my unlimited phone automated and that works nearly flawlessly.
To be Fair to the Seller(IDoing) they told me up front it only worked with T-Mobile.
the WIFI connection ! ( established through a 4G LTE WIFI modem ) ( NOS-carrier) mobile Sim card - only data )
I had no "notice " of any incompatibility from the seller ( in fact I bought all items from them precisely to assure compatibility ! )
I´m waiting on a friend to bring his new HOTSPOT to see if that works ...
if there was any limitation on the carrier SIM it would also not through the smartphone hotpspot connection ....right ? ( it does ! )
Hi all, I need your help.
I have the following Chinese car head-unit android 9 for Audi. This unit is 4g supporting SIM card but unfortunately when I inserted nothing appear in the unit. Now I am trying via Huawei usb 4g dongle but I can not find the way to see the root for PPP widget in order to connect the dongle. Any suggestions to find a solution? Thank you in advance

Best way to hotspot to the headunit

Hi everyone.
A few months ago I got a custom android unit to fit my car (Ford Falcon 2013). I'm new to the Android Headunit scene and I am not sure the best way to get my hotspot from my phone to my headunit. I'm also not sure what software my headunit is running, hoping someone can help me figure that out. I've seen terms like MTCB and pumkpin but not sure what mine is, since its a small company in Melbourne AU.
I can setup a wifi hotspot from my phone in tasker when the bluetooth connects, but was hoping there was another way so that the battery doesn't drain.
I have tried bluetooth hotspot but that doesn't seem to work as the headunit doesn't use the normal android bluetooth settings, it uses its own thing, im not sure.
USB hotspot also doesnt seem to work as it just triggers Headunit Reloaded (AA).
The other thing I was thinking was getting a cheap data plan just for the headunit, but i'm not sure if the 4G USBs will be compatible with the headunit? Never tried one on an android device before.
Worst case I can just setup a wifi hotspot through tasker, but hoping someone will have some insights for me.
Thanks in advance!
I struggled with this a bit myself when I first got an android head unit. Basically, Bluetooth or USB tethering don't work without using a third party app like PDAnet, which wasn't as seamless as I liked. Using a USB hotspot wouldn't allow you to use it directly via the USB, you'll have to connect to the hotspot over wifi as well.
It was cheaper to for me to just add more data to my cell phone plan and just hotspot through that, then getting a dedicated hotspot for the car with its own plan. Now the question is why is your phone draining while your tethering? Are you not plugging it into the USB ports on the head unit itself? The ports on the head unit don't provide enough power to charge the phone while tethering so I just use a regular cigarette lighter to charge the phone while tethering
You can try using nfc chip or sticker (on the phone holder for example)
Personally what i did is to buy a regular cell plan (all inclusive, was cheaper then "data" plan) with 2 sim cards (one for the headunit and one for my ipad)
Comnected a 4g wifi usb stick and using it wirelessly (i wish my mtce system could identify the stick as a modem) but it does the job and i can save my personal data plan by using the cars wifi

Supported USB 4G Dongles - no wifi

I am finding it a lot more difficult than I expected to find a working 4G dongle for my android 8 headunit that connects via USB, not wifi.
There is conflicting information out there on compatible 3G dongles but next to zero information on 4g dongles.
Does anyone know of a 4G dongle that is compatible with android via USB?
Thanks
Seicane H221K (Android 8.1) + Huawei E3276 not working
Hi,
Same issue.
* head unit: Seicane H221K (Android 8.1)
* 4G USB stick: Huawei E3276
I can't get data connection to work, while I've tested it succesfully on my laptop with the same stick and SIM.

Hello,
Change the room on the head unit.
I suggest Hal9k ROMs.
The malays rom not always work the 3G/4G doungles.
The original roms never will be the 3G/4G doungle.
Or buy a Wifi broadcasting 3G/4G doungle and connect the HU wifi to the doungle.

Krisztian

Thanks. I'm considering changing ROM. I've also issues with climate control, missing head display, etc.
For the moment, I solved the 4G issues buying a wifi USB dongle :/
