what's my options? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

At&t user here. When I first got the phone I didn't have service on the phone so I immediately rooted and installed echo rom. After getting my service hooked up I realized I didn't have volte anymore so I went back to stock. Now I'm noticing the battery drain with at&t firmware and I'm dying to make it a little better. My question is what are my options as far as rooting to debloat but keeping volte? Does simply rooting break volte?

If you don't mind the T-Mobile logo at boot up, you might be pleasantly surprised with running T-mobile's firmware.
Below is what I did and all I lost was wifi calling and video calling which was spotty to begin with, yet gained faster data speeds and a better experience.

It does and very noticeable in my case. I got 2 of these phones at the same time. So with my wife's phone as comparison in the same area I get twice the speed when I run Speedtest on both consistently. My GPS is always locking faster. My Pandora and iheart streams start quicker and so does YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix. Pokemon pop up way before they do on hers. And a biggie- I go all day despite heavier usage. Battery life is much better than with ATT firmware.
ATT firmware is doing something under the hood that is hampering performance on their own network which is crazy. It's sad that you have to go to another carrier's firmware for best performance.

I'm gonna try the T-Mobile rom later tonight because I need the better data speeds but for anyone wishing to stay on stock at&t firmware, Uninstall all updates to system apps you do not use (Google Apps, Samsung apps etc) and I promise battery will be better. That's literally the only thing I've done to my phone. I restored to stock at&t and only got like 6hrs total on a full battery. Last night I Uninstalled all of those updates to the bloatware and I've been running on a full charge for 8hrs and only down to 51% with 2hrs screen on time. I'd say that's pretty good battery life...

Absolutely blows my mind. I have witnessed the exact same thing. I can't understand why AT&T would put a service limiter in their own software but they do. I get almost double the LTE speed on the Tmobile firmware over the AT&T firmware using both on AT&T service. I have been trying to figure out what in the firmware does it but have not had any luck yet. Has anyone with a bit more developer knowledge than me taken a look at what is different between the 2 firmwares and found out what in the at&t firmware is limiting the the LTE speed.

You will be pleasantly surprised on the Tmobile service. I would recommend getting Package Disabler Pro and disabling all of the tmobile software, and all of the Facebook apps. then you should be good to go.

[Q] Roaming only mode?

Hello everyone,
Hope you're all enjoying the Epic as much as I am (and to think... this time yesterday I had a Touch Diamond)! One feature that I used every day at work in WinMo was the "Roaming only" option under Start -> Settings -> Personal -> Phone -> Services -> Roaming. On the Epic, the choices are "Sprint only" and "Automatic." Are there any ideas of how to add a Roaming only mode?
(At work my sprint signal is very low, and my Verizon signal is fine. If I am in Automatic mode, my Diamond battery would die in 1.5hrs without me touching the phone, but under Roaming Only mode the battery would be down to 50% by the end of the day.)
Thank you!
App: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.vuvuzela.roamcontrol
Thanks for the tip. I downloaded the app but roam only isn't working. I'll shoot the dev an email and report back.
seems like you need to be rooted
I just installed this on my epic and its working great. Phone temps have dropped tremendously since i have no sprint coverage at home. This should save alot of bettery life as well.

Working great here too. Download (and upload) speeds no different than with Sprint. And it is so odd to see more than 1 bar on my signal meter at home.

Thanks for pointed this app out. Works great!
I have had some issues with signal from time to time in one particular room in my house. I noticed that my phone went to roam one time and the signal jumped up tremendously so I got to thinking about some type of forced roam.
A secondary benefit for me is that my 3g speed increased dramatically. A little over doubled download and slight increase on upload. Not only did it increase, but it is now stable!!
I had unrooted my phone and went completely back to stock due to no real ROM out yet that seemed worth putting up with the headaches. I did root again to obtain and use this app and absolutely have no problem with paying the amount asked with the results I have gotten factored in.

I roam all the time in my office and in the metro system in DC. Just to confirm, we don't have a roaming data cap, right? When I log into my account it says that it's unlimited but if you click on the "speeds" tab of this page
http://shop.sprint.com/en/shop/why_sprint/4g/4g_plan_details.html
It mentions a 300mb roaming limit. I think/hope it means if you *don't* have the $10 add on so I'm fine, but I also used to roam all the time on my old phone on Sprint and the plan page never mentioned a limit. Hopefully they'd give a warning or something before being charged extra...

The limit on data roaming only applies to data cards...not to phones.
i found it depends on rep you talk to
some say no limit on phones others say the limit applies to phones too

Sting or wing !?

About to buy a Xoom , would like to know where the Xoom wifi stands in terms of development compared to 3G version!?
Since I don't use 3G much I'd like wifi only but would be helpful to know if am not compromising on anything else.
Also what's the average Web time you get on your 3G or WiFi ?!
Appreciate your suggestions.

I am using the 4g LTE Xoom so I can only speak about that. I don’t use the 4g often, that’s why I am only on a 1Gig plan with Verizon. I think the Xoom has great battery life. I can go for almost 2 days of average usage with no problem. Personally I prefer charging it each day so I almost never go below 50% battery level.
I don’t know much about the units supplied in India but I can’t imagine that the firmware is that much different than the US version.
Vote for wing by me

4G version here, bought it day after release day. I have yet to activate it so I guess I could have gotten by quite easily with the wi-fi only version! However, my company provides me an unlimited wireless hot spot so if I didn't have that I'm sure I would have activated it by now. I kinda wish I had jumped on the $20/mo plan when it was available but oh well.
Battery life is outstanding. It actually seems to have improved with ICS too. I also charge mine every night but if I happen to forget its no big deal, it'll still get me through the next day easily.

I prefer wifi but I've never tried the 4g one so.. yeah but also if you get the wifi one you can put on the us firmware and get ics instantly. Also you could root on put on a custom rom.

Slow internet speeds with Nougat

As the title States, I am getting really slow speeds ever since I upgraded to Nougat. Is anyone else having this issue? Are there any different radios to try and flash?
What radio and bootloader do you have installed and what provider are you on? Also is it still slow when on wifi?
I haven't done any speed tests on my phone since upgrading to Nougat, but browsing and downloading seem to be pretty close to speeds I had before with MM.

What are your speeds? I'm in KY and at&t, I'll run speed tests on LTE, 3g and wifi real quick and post my results in a min.
Here are my speed test results, I'm using digitalhigh's ROM on Nougat. Bare in mind, my wifi is tied to some crap time warner cable and getting 17mbps is actually really good for it.
Images should be ~11mbps, 7mbps and 17mbps in order of LTE, 3g, wifi.
I'm stock rooted and just noticed today that my uploads are about the same as yours. Roughly 1mb on every test. Wifi seems okay. I'm on Verizon and have never seen it this slow with a speed test.

nougat tmo vs att on att service

hi all,
has anyone had a chance to compare the officially released versions of tmo and att on the att network?
i think someone had done this on a previous version, but i was curious if there was a big difference in data speed/performance/bloat.
i'm currently on the tmo bqb1 on att and enjoying it, but haven't tried the att version after it was release.
thanks in advance!
for me its better in many ways. Mobile Hotspot working(Not Included in My Plan), S Health working (wasn't Working On Att for no reason) less Bloat, little better Data speed. Performance is little down only cuz occasionally phone doesnt wakeup from sleep when pressing Home button (takes few seconds to wakeup) .
I've noticed almost double the speed from my cell service. No idea y but for some reason the att store is faster on Tmobile firmware.
Looks like I'm just gonna stay on this then. Thanks!
When I was on the T-Mo version, I was getting better DL speeds and overall better signal strength than I get on the AT&T version. I'd be really interested in flashing the T-Mo modem if one came available (It may already be, I just haven't looked).
Honestly, that's the ONLY difference I see comparing the 2. I disabled the AT&T bloat just like the T-Mo bloat, the ROM's themselves behaved exactly the same for me

Carrier throttling data on Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Not sure if everyone has seen or read about this yet but it looks like the major carriers are intentionally slowing your connection down through services that compete with there own media.
Here is a YouTube video that lauds it all out for you.
I tested this on my device and saw a HUGE slowdown through fast.com (the Netflix server test). YouTube seemed to be largely uneffected. But others on AT&T unlimited plans have seen really bad slow downs in both.
So just wondering a few things :
1.) Has anyone else tried this? Are you seeing similar issues?
2.) Is this AT&T server side or is the firmware related? I'm on stock current AT&T firmware, but had anyone tried this or seen different results on the U1 firmware? I know of the S7 EDGE the Tmobile firmware actually got the fastest data a peed results on AT&T service when I tested on that device.
Thanks.
Anyone on the U1 unlocked firmware try testing this yet?

Crazy how fast they stopped following net neutrality.
Has anyone tried on the unlock firmware. I'm just wonder if it is server side or firmware related.
I'm not sure how this is news. ATT sent out tons of emails regarding what they call Stream Saver multiple times and provided links how to opt out if you want. Personally it doesn't bother me. I don't need the 1080P stream to a 5inch screen and its help bring the kids usage down by about 4M a month against our data usage.

The issue is I've competed opted out of it, and they are still limiting the network connection.
It also limits it when I got spot my phone and access it through a laptop or my chrome cast.
It's also a violation of federal net neutrality laws.

I check with my PC and this what I get.
Claim internet speed by provider is up to 100MB , I have check and I got around 115MB all the time. With Fast.com I get 4.5 MB and on YouTube I have around 80MB. With my AT&T speed in my house I have around 50MB on Fast.com I have 4.1 to 5MB and on YouTube I get around 11MB.
So I don't know what is really going on.
Edit: today is even better on you tube I have around 20 mb with AT&T mobile data

Yeah it's like AT&T specifically targeting showing down Netflix. Soon BS if you ask me poetically mad peeps are dropping cable for Netflix
I haven't noticed a bit of throttling when I'm streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, or Hulu using AT&T data... I don't do it a lot (especially since I can download videos on Netflix or Amazon) but I stream enough to be able to clock speeds. I agree it's not likely that it's firmware-related; if you're getting throttled, it's got to be server-side.

It's the at&t plan you're on.
If you're on unlimited choice, streaming speeds are 3mbps
If you're on unlimited plus, streaming speeds are 10mbps
It's our way of getting an extra 30/month out of you.

By any chance have you tried playing with your radio settings at all?
Im in the middle of a really poor service area where att is a roaming network so my tests are inconclusive.....
*#*#4636#*#* in dialer and run some tests with different network types enabled.
Or at least check it frequently to see what type of signal youre getting. Forcing LTE only may be helpful.
Sorry i dont have more for you but i wont be able to get more answers until im back at work

It's nothing I have done. Watch the YouTube video it's being done by every carrier. It's in violation of bet neutrality. And a breach of contract probably too. Check your own phone when you get somewhere with good service. It'll be the same.
