Losing GPS signal when mobile data turned on - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

When I'm using Google Maps with the mobile data on during navigation I get the "GPS signal lost" message very frequently. I can drive for about 2 km and the blue dot is still frozen on the same place. But when I disable the mobile data the GPS works almost flawlessly. This issue happened in stock rom and is still happening on this unofficial LineageOS rom that I'm currently using on my XT1640. Is there anything I can do about it?

Does gps use data?

Question in title.. the other day, I went to the mountains and did not have any signal but my gps worked just fine. This leads the question, does using the gps use any mobile data at all?
I'd guess no, but I'd be more curious to see if an app like GPS Essentials works when you're in that situation. It pulls a lot of info from GPS.
There is an app that caches a large map file on your SD card so you can do basic map (not google) navigation without any data connection at all but the name of it escapes me at the moment. If that app is even possible then I'd guess GPS can function independently of data as long as it doesn't need anything beyond basic location info.
Today's Google Maps update in the market kinda deals with this. It adds caching options so that if you lose your data connection (which is required for things like driving navigation) you don't lose everything else too. It caches data so the phone can continue working for a few minutes even without a data signal.
The GPS has a function which access the internet to help it lock on for the first time. It looks up on the internet where the satellites might be. If you have a standalone GPS that you have not used for a while, it takes several minutes to lock on. Looking up where the satellites are on the sky through the internet speeds this up significantly. I believe that is what is called A-GPS. But I believe any GPS works standalone, without data.

GPS/Navigation issues

My phone is a month old and the GPS is ridiculously slow to gain a connection. Does anyone have a solution? Everything is stock and I use the stock navigation on the phone.
Mine works great. Maybe turn on use networks in location settings and try to get clear of any buildings. I get lock in less than a minute outside. Download gps status from th e market and check if it can see the satellites. There's also an option in there to reset the agps data

try downloading the GPS test app in the market. How many satellite connections are you getting?
Here's the market link:

search for "vision_wipe_efs-signed.zip", it fixed my gps

proposed solution for gps issues

Hi guys, I've been working hard for a while trying to track down a work-around to get gps to work properly, I've been testing my idea for about a week now and its been 100% effective for me so far.
Back ground:- I've been messing with every rom and they all exibit the same issue, "no azimuth or elevation data" is being received from the satelites. Without this data no location can be caluclated.
I stopped using Zeubeas ICS for a while as I wanted to use what should be a perfect, stable rom, as good as zeubeas rom is I didn't feel it was stable enough for my testing, so I ended up choosing cyanogen 7.2.0 as my choice.
First thing to note is that I have found that "gps test" by chartcross or gps status & toolbox by mobiwia eclipsim don't seam to work properly, as in they are supposed to have the ability to clear the agps data stored on the phone but from my testing it dosn't work hence why I struggled for so long beleiving those apps worked. So I stopped using them compleatly.
I Did find an app that does seam to work for me, it is also called gps test, but it is by Mike Lockwood, it shows satalite azimuth and elevation data and also seams to clear the agps data correctly.
I also use a really neat gps app called AndroiTS Gps test free, it has a nice gui, shows satalite azimuth and elevation data and more and doesn't seam to cause any conflict with gps apps.
The test condidtions:-
GPS on
3G & wifi off
Open either androiTS or gps test (then menu and start gps)
Wait a while, if you see numbers in the azim & elev other than 0(zero) you should eventually get location lock I have found that it takes no longer than 5 minutes to get lock, outside in the open.
Ok so you don't see azim & elev data, here's what I do to get it going again
Gps on of course
3G and wifi off (don't want any data or anything just yet)
Open gps test
Menu
Select clear aiding data
Close down gps test
3G data on, wifi off (having wifi on doesn't seam to help)
Open gps test
Menu
Start
Hey presto I see azimuth and elevation data again
When I do this I get really quick gps lock
Another thing I have noticed if you do the clear aiding data with 3G data off and wifi off then start gps you won't see azimuth or elevation data.
I hope this helps all the others with gps issues, if your getting gps issues and you can see the azimuth and elevation data but no lock this solution "may" also help.
I have not yet tried this idea on any other rom, so I don't know if it works as it does for me using cm 7.2.0, that is on my "todo list"
Happy Gps'ing
Update to this discussion.
I have now tried zeubeas beta 4 and out of the box I get no azimuzh or elevation data, the method I put forth above unfortunately did nothing to rectify GPS data either.

The phone unable to acquire stable GPS signal while using mobile data (WCDMA/LTE), as soon i disable the network data the GPS signal lock and fix very stable.

is this hardware issue or just software bug.
I am running OxygenOS 2.1.0 have issue, after update to 2.1.1 the issue still there.

Did you try any gps test app to see if it's working when mobile data is connected?

I guess it might be a software issue. Try a factory reset and see if helps fix things. Else, service center might be able to help you.
All the best :good:

The GPS issue is still there.

It's strange.
I guess you need to talk to service center.
My OP2 is losing GPS position as well, haven't been able to relate it band change. To have the position back I have to do off/on Location in the top pull down pane. Driving me nuts.

Same issue here, also with OOS 2.2.0. Any update on that? Really annoying when navigating in unknown areas and GPS stops working...
Guys, after months of test, it's related to Telco, depend which radio band they use at specific area.
try test other telco with prepaid sim, see if your GPS still disrupted while mobile data transfer.
The only GPS issue related I have with mine
Is playing Ingress in my bedroom first floor (GPS signal is weak) but I never had problems while using high accuracy and WiFi on other devices

OnePlus 2 GPS problems since Oxygen 3.x
OnePlus 2.
On Oxygen 2.x the GPS worked flawlessly:
Accurate, acquire location quickly, and while Location Services was always on, the phone knew how to conserve battery by only really turning it on (location icon shows up near clock) when needed.
Since Oxygen 3.x it all went bad:
Very often, GPS doesn't acquire position and sometimes nothing helps but a reboot.
Location Services is on and the GPS icon comes up and disappears near the clock every few seconds, without any app requiring it.
Any help?
Abiit the second problem: Maybe there's some app constantly turning on my GPS in the background? Know of an app to show what apps are using GPS right now?
Same problem here in Denmark with "3" network - both with OxygenOS 3.1.0 and with CM13
Rather annoying - makes me scan new phone releases.
Same problem here too!

GPS not working in navigation apps - "Searching for GPS"

Hi All,
As per the title, my GPS is not working when using navigation mode in Google Maps or Waze. It always says searching for GPS. Waze cannot lock onto a GPS signal either.
I'm using a stock Nexus 6P with the latest patch. My sister using a stock Nexus 6 is also having the same issues.
Doing a quick search on twitter has also found other users having the same issues on a number of different devices so i think a recent update of some sort may have killed it.
https://twitter.com/search?q=searching for gps&src=typd
I've tried a factory reset etc.
same issue here, when I tried to revert back to 6.01 it's still failing
Same here in Pokemon-go.
