I'm glad they did this. Minimal Fastboot and ADB filled this need up to this point but having it come straight from Google is a good thing.

Yes. If you're on Windows, you'll also need to update your driver's.

I've never installed any drivers for ADB, nor fastboot. Not for my N6, N9, Pixel C nor Pixel XL. Literally plug and play. I'm running Ubuntu, but I doubt it's any different for other districts.
Maybe it only works without drivers for Nexus/Pixel devices......

probably true and I am not doubting what you said. I thought you meant drivers in general. Ubuntu is a very nice distro

I think the drivers are actually stored on the pixel from what I read before. So you just connect it and they get installed automatically. That along with the new platform tools only download from Google should be all pro need for fastboot.
Off topic. I actually purchased a new SSD to dual boot Windows and Linux because I want to start learning ROM development. I literally just got done putting in the SSD and doing a clean windows 7 install. Anything I need to know before installing Linux or any suggestions? I was planning on going with Ubuntu. I've only ever used Linux once and it was over 10 years ago

Sorry to say it will not. I've been using the up to date SDK and flash-all doesn't work for me.
Where do I unzip to? I just uninstalled the sdk. Can I just drop in the Android folder or doesn't it matter? Thanks.

It depends on several things. First, have you modified the path variables (so you can run ADB anywhere)? If not, then it doesn't matter where you unzip it.

I created a separate platform tools latest version folder and left the Android folder in place since it has far more stuff. Pointed my path system variable to this one. Would be nice if it had a way to check for current versioning. Also, I suspect a sticky is needed here.
Haven't created a path but doing that now. Thanks guys for the replies.

EDIT: Please delete thread, problem solved.
Does anyone have any information on installing twrp from a mac? I have adb installed, but I haven't read anywhere about how to install it using a mac.
I installed TWRP using my Mac with the official Android SDK and platform-tools for Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 installed.
Basically just followed the instructions on the RootzWiki, as recommended by one of the devs: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12343-how-to-install-twrp-20-linux/
did you install usb drivers (even though they aren't supported by mac osx)? and did you do anything differently because you were using a mac?
thanks for the link.

Sorry man, I don't remember whether or not I installed any USB drivers. If they're not supported, I imagine that I didn't.
But, I don't want to give you misleading info -- so, if you're not sure, I'd say hold off until someone who really knows what they're talking about chimes in. I'm pretty reckless when it comes to this stuff, and I'd hate for you to do something you regret on account of my mouth, ha!
sorry, another question, did the kindle automatically show up in adb with no tinkering, hate to pester you, im just planning everything before i give it a go.
also, did you plug it in while it was on with usb storage enabled?

You don't need any drivers. Adb and fastboot should both work just fine. You might need to edit the ini file though.
Did you have to edit the usb_ini file? if so, how would i go about doing it?

ok, one final thing ( i promise) http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12343-how-to-install-twrp-20-linux/ is that similar to what you did?

Hello All,
I've read that linux does not open up the file system of nexus 7 when connected? Is that right? if yes, how can one transfer files to nexus 7?
Am waiting on my device which should arrive in few days. I really dont want to go some where else to copy my files or use apps to transfer files over the air. My phone is android and linux shows me the sd card folder right away after plugging in...
Also, can you guys please point me towards howto on rooting my device while on linux? I have seen wndows has one click method which is pretty awesome. I realize we might not have one click methods in linux, am willing to do it the hardway too..just need some direction.
Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks for taking your time.

I have no problems loading the file system on my Arch System. However, I personally rooted using Windows and the One-Click. Since all it does is use adb to push files onto the system, it is 100% possible to root and unlock using Linux. Just make sure you have the Android SDK installed. By "showing Nexus files" do you mean the SD card? Linux supports PTP / MTP so this won't be a problem. You won't be able to directly view any other files without some other server installed on the Nexus, such as NFS or CIFS. As already stated, if you install the Android SDK, you will be able to root the device using adb / fastboot shell commands.
I think it depends on which distribution you are using. Ubuntu doesn't have mtp support by default.

Easy to get it though.
Yes, i am able to mount my internal storage in Arch if that's what you are asking. As stated before, you must have MTD support in your distro. Since Mint is based on Ubuntu, you may have to do some work. Sorry, not really sure how in Ubuntu.

Thanks a ton buddy! Guess I gotta follow that link as am a Mint user..
Hello,
My N4 is soft-bricked. Well, hopefully that's all it is.
I want to sideload a ROM onto it, via Mac OS X 10.9.3
I have found plenty of instructions on how to do that with a Mac.
But I can't get ADB or fastboot to see the device.
When I go to the system information on this Mac and looked at the USB devices, I see the Nexus there... along with its serial number, etc. But in Terminal I get a device not found error in ADB and nothing at all in fastboot.
It is my understanding I don't need to install any special drivers on Mac for it to detect the device. Is that correct?
If not, does any one have any suggestions on how I might get this device connected properly?
Thank you...
With further research, I have made some progress. I found this: http://stackoverflow.com/a/7169048
It says:
Also, if that does not work, check to see if the device shows up under USB in the System Profiler (included in OS X). If it is showing up there, but not in ADB, try adding the USB Vendor ID of the phone to ~/.android/adb_usb.ini
This file can be created if it does not already exist. The Vendor ID of the Nexus S is 0x18d1. Please make sure the last line of the file is a Vendor ID, do not leave a blank line at the end.

After doing that, I can now see my N4 listed. Well, at least it does when I am in recovery mode.
Now I shall see if I can make some progress with pushing a ROM to this thing (I am new to all this, so I'll see how this goes...)
Can you get to the bootloader screen? Only there fastboot will work.
Way easier if you just set up a virtual machine and run Odin from Windows.

Sorry I never replied. Thank you. I got it sorted. Nice to have my N4 up and running again.
So running into a problem. I have downloaded and installed ADB but the version installed is 1.0.32. And my computer doesn't find any devices when I type adb devices.
Is this because I need a later version of ADB and if so any clue how to install it on Ubuntu? I have searched the WEB and can't find it.
Cheers!

Thanks DrakenFX for trying. I had already looked at that one. I looked some more and I guess Ubuntu has been having some problems with MTP. The answer for the problem is found at HERE if anyone is running into the same issue.
I use linux as well, but instead of installing the whole Android development kit, I went for the leaner, no-install-required platform-tools, which is the linux equivalent of "Minimal ADB and Fastboot". You can download it directly from Google here: https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools_r23.0.1-linux.zip
Unzip it, open up a terminal in the folder, and type " ./adb devices "

Just to document this in case it would benefit someone else: I have been trying everything I could find on the net to get my A7 recognized by adb devices. The list always came up empty. Yet, on my windows 10, adb devices for my A7 worked. And my htc m7 on ubuntu was also recognized. Finally, I removed the famous 51-android.rules (which had a line for my A7 but not for my m7; on /etc/udev/rules.d) and then adb devices showed the A7.
EDIT:
The day after having written this, I lost the device again: adb devices no longer showed the A7. Again tried everything with no success. Then I downloaded the Android SDK, which comes with version 1.0.39 of adb. Ran that and it worked. Go figure. So I still cannot really put my finger on what made the difference.

Are you using a USB drive? Try using a different drive, or burn the ISO to a disc if you have an optical drive.

Try a different USB drive. UEFI shouldn't be the problem; if it was, you wouldn't be able to boot from the drive.
