G935FD - Disable mobile data on second SIM - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hey Guys
Here is the deal..my G935FD is having connectivity issues (service unavailable) on the SIM card that provides backup mobile data but only when on 2G network. My assumption is that this carrier have move away from 2G and have limited connectivity capabilities in 2G. When switched to 4G, works just fine... however I want to use this carrier only for voice services and not data.
I already updated my modem to latest version with same results.
My goal is to disable data completely on this SIM, but the minimum setting on the Edge is 2G and on top of that is not possible to have both SIM running 3G/LTE. I also tried using a fake APN but no luck.
Do you know a way to accomplish this?

From what I could understand, you want mobile data on your primary SIM, and use the secondary SIM only for voice but the carrier is re-farming 2G and you can't have 3G on the 2nd SIM slot?
Well, there's no solution for it. One SIM Slot can do 2G/3G/LTE whereas the second one can only do 2G. No way around it.

Thanks for your help. So no way to only shut down data completely on the second SIM? Shutting down mobile data from settings shut it down for both SIMs, couldn't find a way to shut them now independently.

Under SIM card manager, when you see the Mobile Data tab, isn't it set to SIM 1? That would automatically disable Mobile Data on the 2nd SIM, however you can't get past the network mode restriction. So SIM 1 will be on 2G/3G/LTE, whereas SIM 2 will be on 2G only.

Very easy
Via the settings tab, get into mobile network tab, select access point names.
Choose the sim u want to deactivate and then select the APN and delete it with the menu option on top right hand corner.

using 3g doesn't mean it will use data.. when u chose the primary sim for data the other will never use data even on 3g.

ZE551KL - Data Service only available on 1 SIM

Help!! I just got the phone and i have 2 AT&T SIM cards installed only the sim that i select as preferred data sim gets data service. Second sim card only receives 2g cellular service. which is ok other than the following 2 things. MMS messages need data service to work correctly and 2g cellular service is horrible in my building at work. I have tried manually selecting network but only available option for secondary sim is 2g. also tried manually setting up a new APN but didn't seem to change anything. my data connectivity and cellular reception flip when changing preferred data sim . so i know its not a sim card issue
I am not rooted

Do you have the option to set the preferred network type for both SIM cards separately?
It's under Settings > More (Under Wireless & networks) > Cellular network settings > Preferred Network Type
I only use 1 SIM so I can't see what additional options are available when you use two.

No preferred type is for both i have it selected to 4g/3g/2g i can select the network operators independently. once i search for network one sim gets 4/3/2g options and the second only get 2g as an option. AT&T and Tmobile are showing up
Hmm wish I knew more about this to help you out but I don't have any experience with running two SIM cards in a phone.
Have you used both of these SIM cards in another phone before and had them both work as intended simultaneously?
It could just be a limitation of the phone, maybe it can't have two separate 4G connections at once on the same network?
I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Well I am having a similar issue, I have a bell sim I would like to run as 2g and a koodo sim I would like to be the full 4g. The phone refuses dual active, only card selected for data connection functions; I can choose either, but only one functions at a time except for a couple minutes after switching via dual sim settings
---edit---
I forgot to mention, it activates during a call as well

The phone specs say it can only connect to a LTE/3G network on one SIM at only one time. The secondary SIM can only connect to 2G-GSM.

Given the phone specs. Your connection problem is caused by neither Telus(Koodo) or Bell have a 2G network. Yeah so the phone is pretty much useless to Canadians if you want Bell/Telus/Wind/Videotron on the secondary SIM.
I have used my phone (same model) with two SIM's (ATT and T-Mobile). You can enable data only on a device at a time, but it can be on any of the two SIM's. This is mentioned in the phone specs.
http://www.asus.com/us/Phone/ZenFone-2-Laser-ZE551KL/specifications/
Scroll down to the end note.
Other phones cannot even activate the 4G on the secondary SIM.
It's a little confusing maybe to switch the data, but it can be done - from Android settings.
Ahh, well its still a sweet phone; manually switching isn't a big deal

The E6633 isn't a true dual SIM

Hi all,
On a Honor or Oneplus, you can switch the mobile data from sim1 to sim2 and the 3G/4G switch also... But on the Xperia Z5 the SIM is ONLY 2G !!! There is a tweak or idea for switching without change the SIM card slot
Sounds like you just need to select your data SIM slot as the 4G one.
From the manual:
Selecting a SIM card for data traffic
Either of the two SIM cards inserted in your device can handle data traffic, but only
one SIM card can be selected to handle data at any given time. You can select the
SIM card to use for data traffic during the initial setup of your device, or you can
select or change it later via the Settings menu.
To change the SIM card used for data traffic
1 From your Home screen, tap
2 Find and tap Settings > Dual SIM settings > SIM card for data traffic
3 Select the SIM card that you want to use for data traffic, then tap OK to confirm.
For higher data speeds, select the SIM card that supports the fastest mobile network, for
example, 3G or LTE.
Selecting mobile networks
Your device supports the use of two different networks at the same time. You can
select from the following network mode combinations when two SIM cards are
inserted in your device:
- One LTE network and one GSM network
- One WCDMA network and one GSM network
- Two GSM networks
For each SIM card, you can set your device to switch automatically between mobile
networks depending on which mobile networks are available where you are. You can
also manually set your device to use a particular mobile network mode for each SIM
card, for example, WCDMA or GSM.
Different status icons are displayed in the status bar depending on the type or mode
of network that you are connected to.

You Can switch networks without changing the sim cards, it's in "mobile network settings".

No, just tested that. Maybe your second sim card doesn't have 3G/4G coverage.

1. SIM for mobile data and 2. SIM for calling?

Hi guys,
like the title says I want to use 1 SIM only for mobile data and the other SIM only for calling. I know there are settings for this and that this is possible but I want to know if I can use the "mobile data SIM" in LTE mode while receiving normal calls using the other SIM?
Is it even possible to use a mobile data only SIM in this phone? (just to be sure )
Did someone have experience with usage like this?
Thanks!

If you would have played with the settings first then you wouldn't have had asked this.
Anyway, you can choose preferred Sim for Data, Sms and Call. You may choose same sim for all 3 or 2 different as per your choice.
Whichever Sim you chose for Data will always allow you to choose from different network types like 4G/3G/2G but the 2nd sim(2nd sim in the sense the another sim, you have have chosen sim in 2nd slot for data, so in that case the sim in 1st slot) will always be on 2G. You won't be able to change that.
And I am sure you wanted to know exactly this.
And it's upto you for what purpose you use the sim.
1 use 1 sim only for data. Talk time on that is always 0. And another for call and sms.
The Sim I use for data is PrePaid and the other one a PostPaid. Just in case you had this confusion.
If you have any other confusion feel free to ask.

Yes it works and you can put them in either SIM slot. Both slots are LTE capable and it works in both configurations. Just make sure the network options are set to "LTE/4G preferred" as they might not be by default, on the data SIM.

1 SIM @ 4G (DATA/VOICE/SMS) while the other @3G (voice) possible?

Can I have 1 sim for data & voice running at 4G, while the other sim for voice & sms only in 3G? Or only 2G supported?
Because I read at 1+3 forum that it can actually do this, so I was wondering if the Axon 7 can as well. I don't see why not, correct?
Has anyone tried this? I'm in the US, and would like to be able to run a tmobile mvno sim (4G+voice+sms) + an international sim (voice+sms) that's roaming on AT&T who will shut down 2G soon.
It's a dual 4G sim slot, so yea you can run it like that.

Go to settings - dual sim settings - network mode and on sim 2 tell it GSM only. It will keep sim 2 on 3g. Also on settings -dual sim settings you can turn off mobile data for either sim. Just put t-mobile in sim 1 and at&t in sim 2, shut off mobile data on sim 2, and tell sim 2 gsm only. Done
Thanks for the info, I didn't buy the device yet; but this makes choosing a device even harder since both can do this now (1+3 & Axon 7).
Until recently this was NOT the norm I believe, best I could find was a dual sim phone with 1 sim @ 4G while the other @ 2G only.

Doesn't GSM-only mean 2G? While both slots are hooked up for 2G/3G/4G, I think only one slot can be connected to 3G/4G at a time, the other slot goes down to 2G.
When I have my Verizon SIM in Slot1 (chosen as data connection) and a T-Mobile SIM in Slot2, using apps like LTE Discovery show my A7 connected to Verizon LTE, Verizon 1x (2G for voice calls), and T-Mobile GSM (2G), not T-Mobile HSPA (3G). When I switch the data connection source to Slot2, it connects to T-Mobile LTE and Verizon 1x (2G), not Verizon EVDO (3G).
Yes I was able to confirm LTE and WCDMA simultaneous operation
Hi! Amazingly, yeah this works...you can have LTE on one SIM and WCDMA 3G on the other (voice only). I tested this with two T-Mobile SIMs and was kind of shocked as in the past it seems like all dual-SIM phones are limited to GSM-only on one of the two SIMs, as has been mentioned above...
But...strangely, this won't work when using a CDMA SIM in slot 1 (i.e., Verizon). I have no clue why...I can definitely confirm that my experience is the same as that stated above by xtermmin - the GSM SIM will be limited to EDGE (2G only) when the CDMA SIM is active as the data SIM. But with two GSM operators yes one can be LTE/WCDMA and the other can be WCDMA/GSM. I'll confirm real quick just to make double sure but I seem to recall seeing this in the specs and was able to confirm it myself. I've attached a screenshot showing this - I have SIM 2 enabled for data as you can see but SIM 1 still shows voice-only on UMTS and thus is not just limited to 2G. I hope they fix this phone so that CDMA SIMs will have this same functionality...for now though I can say confidently that two GSM SIMs can be operated as LTE/WCDMA on primary SIM and WCDMA/GSM on secondary SIM simultaneously...really great news considering all the EDGE networks seem to be on their last leg!
EDIT: Oh - and don't mind the fact that the "Cellular Network State" is shown as disconnected - in slot 1 I have an old T-Mobile SIM just for this test - it isn't active at the moment on an account. But for demonstration hopefully it does suffice as it definitely has the phone connected to 3G service on SIM 1 while having LTE service on SIM 2. Also - I've included a 2nd screenshot to show that with Verizon LTE/CDMA on SIM 1 (shown as carrier '123456'), SIM 2 will be limited to GSM-only on T-Mo...really weird - not sure why this limitation exists for CDMA users - I think it's a ZTE bug as simultaneous CDMA 1X and WCDMA is possible with T-Mobile as the data-SIM.

Yeah for sure...I love the phone and all but I really hope ZTE will just fix these annoying CDMA bugs already...Seems like they could fix this stuff with or without Verizon's approval - from the beginning they've kind of hamstrung CDMA and I've never really understood why. Another bug I noticed was that when switching calls to the T-Mobile SIM, VoLTE has to be kicked into gear by toggling the VoLTE toggle and sometimes even putting the phone into airplane mode for a second...from what I've heard this is a unique problem to CDMA use as well.

Thanks for the info. Has this issue been sorted out to your knowledge? We livein 2 different regions, but would only consider getting the Aussie release of this phone this month if it can seamlessly handle 4g/3g, using 2 SIM cards where both are capable of LTE. Will this work? Does it automatically switch data to SIM 2 in order to take 3G voice call, or does it temp. disable data on sim 1 (4g) to allow SIM 2 call?

Hi - I just tried this and here's what I found:
If active data is on SIM 2, a call to or from SIM 1 is possible on UMTS (WCDMA 3G) but this will terminate the LTE connection on SIM 2 for the duration of the call. However, a call on SIM 2 will not be a problem for data unless SIM 2 is on EDGE or less...on UMTS or LTE (i.e., a VoLTE call) you'll still have data during the call.
If data is on SIM 1, a call to or from SIM 2 is only possible on EDGE!!! I didn't know this! I guess SIM 2 will always be GSM-only if SIM 1 is the active data SIM. And also - you will lose LTE data on SIM 1 if you receive or place a call on SIM 2 EDGE/GPRS.
So...it looks like the situation isn't as good as I'd hoped - if 3G calling is necessary on a particular SIM card at all times, that SIM should be placed in slot 1. And it'll work well even when SIM 2 is the active data SIM. But, if you need 3G calling at all times on both SIMs, you may be out of luck.
Also, the Axon does not seem to allow you to change the data SIM in the middle of the call...in this scenario, SIM 2 was on LTE and was the active data SIM, and SIM 1 was on UMTS (calls only). I made a call on SIM 1 and then changed the data to SIM 1 to try and get 3G data during my call...but it didn't connect to data until I hung up the call...so it seems that the service state gets frozen when you make a call, in a way.
I hope this info helps...seems like kind of a mixed bag, unfortunately.

Thanks for the. That's pretty backwards by ZTE. Makes no sense. SIM 1 and 2 need to work the same way regardless of WHICH SIM had the 3G incoming call and which had 4G data active at the same time. I read the above as SIM 2 can be 2G only, or is the main SIM for 4G data....so 3G calls can be taken on SIM 1. Yep, backwards!
Axon hasn't sold me. Audio on a phone is important, but the HTC front facing speakers get easily clogged, then it looks horrendous. I'm favouring one of OP3T (as i believe this too has unlocked bootloader and root), or worst case - LG v20 or G5 dual...but neither will be given unlocked bootloaders.

Yes I'm sure. I was using LTE discovery and the Settings --> Phone Status...not just the signal type indication. It can run dual 3G UMTS and/or HSPA+.

Sure thing. Just to make double sure, I just put my FreedomPop (AT&T) SIM in with my T-Mobile one and set both to WCDMA...And it's confirmed that dual 3G works fine (see screenshots below). So you should be ok! AT&T has decommissioned 2G completely so the fact that I could sustain a dual T-Mobile/AT&T connection when T-Mobile is active for 3G data should hopefully prove that the Axon 7 can get dual 3G. One caveat though - with a Verizon SIM in slot 1, slot 2 is still 2G only...So you will be limited to 2G in slot 2 if you have a CDMA SIM in slot 1 which is data-active. But two GSM SIMs should be ok. Good luck!

So Awesome, does anyone if the same is true for the new ZTE Blade v8 Pro, I sure hope so as I am looking to add both of these to my collection, Using prepaid H2O wireless for calls and text and FreedomPop LTE or Global sims for data... What would be the best setup for that data ( FreedomPop ) on sim 1 or sim 2. H20 is a AT&T MVNO

The only limitation vis-a-vis SIM 1 vs. 2 slot I know of when it comes to GSM SIMs relates to WiFi calling... You can only get WiFi calling on SIM 1. But that shouldn't matter for FreedomPop or H2O I would think so it shouldn't matter. Also, CDMA SIMs only work in slot 1 but of course that should affect you either. So either slot should be fine I'd think!

Moto g4 network issues while changing the celluar data from Sim A to Sim B

I have two sims A and B connected to networks .sim A is selected for cellular data but when i change it to sim b , the network on sim b stops coming and until i change the cellular data to sim A and restart the phone Sim B wont connect to a network, error while searching for network is displayed while trying to search for network manually. Does anyone know is it a sim problem or with the mobile. I have even factory resetted the phone and changed the sim slots.
Is one of the SIMs Jio 4G? For it to work, you'll need to set it as the primary data SIM. As soon as you change the data SIM, it will deactivate itself from the network.
So, likely my G4 plus did the same while activating data on another network, JIO4G automatically turns off!

tried that did not work , one sim is airtel 4g and other is vodafone
That's a model and/or mobile operator dependent problem. I have XT1642 in Germany and never had that problem with both sim slots.
What model did you have and in which country?
it's only due to jio sim in india
