S7 Edge still worth it? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi guys, I hope that my question won't cause any problem. My name is Ariel, I'm from Argentina and I will be visiting NYC in a few days.
Currently I own an iPhone 6 (2 years old almost) and my idea is to replace it. I was considering to get the 7 Plus but I saw the price (almost 900 dollars with a case and after taxes) and that made me consider another option.
I saw that the S7 Edge is 600 bucks on B&H right now (the Exynos international version) and with that price difference I can get an iPad mini for college (I´m an engineering student and I use a lot of books, pdfs and powerpoints) so it would be a nice gadget to complement my activities.
Te question is: the S7 Edge is still worth it? I mean, is still a good smartphone? I´m willing to change to Android, I like both OS and I´m not an Apple fanboy so is not a big problem to change iOS.
I apologize for my English, which is not the best! Thank you all and I wish you a happy new year

Well, yeah. It's still right up there as one of the best Android has to offer. Your only issue in transferring to Android may be iMessage, but as you'll be getting an iPad it may not be a problem. You just have to send pictures via the iPad instead of the phone.

I have never used the iMessage really, people are not used to here in Argentina. Whatsapp is the king...

Yeah definitely worth it you can also get a large micro SD with the extra cash

[Q] Galaxy s2 vs galaxy note?

Hi dear,
I'm going to get either Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Note.
The price difference between them is quite big..
GS2 is 730 NZD and Galaxy Note is 1199 NZD(as its just released?)
Do you think galaxy note has that much worthy?
What do think guys?
Hi,
I think it depends on what you want. I have my Note since todays morning and I can say its more of a small tablet than a mobile phone.
I like it relay much because I use it mainly as a internet device as I did with my nexus one before.
Try to get hands on both devices and decide after that.

Im just impressed the resolution of GNote.
Is it as clear as iPhone 4 on browser?
Or when you read some books?

I got the note for 550 euro (950~ nzd) so not sure where you get the huge price tag from. I have both the G2 and the Note and no matter what you use it for the Note is better. The huge screen is so pleasant for anything and if you do not own a tablet it is definitely worth it the extra 150~ euro.

Oh really?
There is only one shop selling note.
Probably I shouldn't purchase anytime soon..
And I own iPad 2 so.. Probably better wait until ppl review..
Also I saw the ICS will come to Note and S2 between in April and June next year.
It's my biggest concern... Should I get galaxy nexus?
Which is faster
I want to compare them from the performance point of view which is faster?

what about the performance which one is better
Note has a faster processor so in benchmarks it's faster. Thing is both are so fast I doubt it matters. Maybe ICS has higher hardware requirements and then the notes processor upgrade might help.

In fact, they use exactly the same processor, the only difference is that on note the voltage is higher so you can get a little more mhz at the cost of battery. The SII with any mod can have the same speed.

Welcome fellow Kiwi!
I assume you are looking at MobiCity for that $1200 ($1180 right this second) pricetag? For comparison, the Galaxy SII was $1120 on day one from MobiCity, so it's not that bad.
Buuut, you can order it from Expansys for NZ$1,074 shipped and save a hundred bucks.
Basically, if you like big screens and styli, the Note blows away the SII. If you really don't mind the screen size/res, then it's just a jumbo-sized SII with a CPU speed bump to match.

Hello mate!
But I'm not Kiwi. I'm Korean who is just studying in NZ
anyway, thank you for welcoming! haha
The shop I reserve for Galaxy Note is H2phone, not mobicity.
I saw that if I ordered it from mobicity, I might have to pay for tax to NZ custom.. so I would be around 1300!! Too expensive
Actually, yeah Note is more attractive to me than GS II due to the screen resolution and slightly different design!

Even if you're not born a Kiwi, I can still claim you for our country's forum representation.
Never heard of H2Phone, actually. It was $1199 on Mobicity a day or two ago, so I assumed that was where you got the price. You make a good point about GST though. Including GST, the Expansys price is about $1235 shipped, and Clove would be about $1160. Pity I'm based in Christchurch - I'd love to be able to grab one for an even $1200 from H2Phone.
And yes, the gigantic screen on the Note is a major factor - since it would effectively replace a tablet too, and has pen input, I'm willing to shell out a bit more for it, $1200 is about my limit though. Unless the 32GB Galaxy Nexus ends up being considerably cheaper.

Hey mate!
You are so sweet! Thanks for good info.
I found one auction on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/32078378918...AX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_500wt_1287
It is selling Galaxy Nexus 32gb for only 640 USD including shipping!!!
I think I'd better wait for it.. but one problem is that
I'm going back to my home country, Korea on the 8th of Nov so
If I can't get it before the 8th, I won't be able to get it this year...t.t
as I do not want my parents to know that I spent too much money for a phone haha
anyway.... I also think the S-pen is so unique and worthy with GNote but the price..... I guess it will be dramatically dropped once I will be back to NZ.
What do you think mate?
If you were me, what would you do?
Get galaxy note on Monday morning or order galaxy nexus to Korea?
one more option... getting iPhone 4S?
Please advice me fellow!

I'd get the Galaxy Note.
At the moment, no one really knows how much the 32GB (or even 16GB) Nexus will cost, but it will probably be about NZ$1100-1150 since the 16GB model is being pegged at $1040, and won't be out for at least 3 weeks.
The Note has a bigger screen, higher res, (probably) faster CPU+GPU, and pen input for about $50 more. Not to mention dedicated buttons on the Note so you have more usable screen space all of the time.
On the other hand, the Nexus has Ice Cream Sandwich now instead of 2-3 months from now, and faster updates, it has a faster camera and.. that's about it. Unless the price comes out significantly cheaper than the Note, the Note is the better buy to me.
As for the iPhone 4S, it has a 3.5" screen. You can't get anything done on such a tiny, girly screen.
Sjael: Cool!
I made my decision. Tomorrow morning I'm gonna get Note
Yeah in terms of the spec of the Note, 2-3months or even longer doesn't really matter for ICS. Anyway it'll be surely getting it and it will look gorgeous on Note!
I have purchased so many apps in AppStore that's why I was considering to get iPhone 4s but I have iPad 2 so it'll be okay.
Thank you for really helpful advice Sjael!
Hope we can see in NZ some time soon

Hey, I have one question..
In the other thread, the owners of GNote said it's laggy compared to Galaxy S2, is it right?
And as I said before, i play Internet with my phone quite often so the size of the Note doesn't really matter to me.
Please just let me know if it's too buggy and slower than galaxy s2.

Unfortunately it's not so easy to try it first in New Zealand, where phones typically come out 9-12 months later (if at all) than in the US/Europe, unless you import them.

Absolutely correct

Torn between this and the Nexus!

I know I can't be the only one out there. I'm just really unsure about the Note's size... I'm a tall guy, with big hands, but its just seems that bit too big?
Mind you, I've been using my Tab 7.0 as a phone for a good 3 weeks!
Is it really usable with one hand? By that I mean, can I fire off a quick text with one hand? If its a yes, I'll order it now!
Thanks for anything useful you have to say!
I'm in the same situation like you!
I'm currently with AT&T at the moment, wondering if I should sell my iPhone 4S (only reason I got it was because of its high resale value) to buy a Note to use, or wait until the Nexus comes to Verizon and sell my iPhone and use that money for the Nexus.
I really like the size of the Note and would love to use it during school, but I kind of want to see how the Nexus looks in real life first before making my decision.
I would also rather be on Verizon's network to be honest, with it's double data promotion helping its case even more.
Im thinking I may just go for the nexus now, I've not had a pure android yet (from stock) and it looks fluid as anything! IMO Touchwiz slows down Android (I own both the Tab and original Galaxy S).
Still can't seem to click buy on either though!
Let me just say that I had the same concerns, so much so that I was determined to wait until I played with the Note before ordering it. I went ahead and took the chance and I am VERY pleased. The phone does not feel nearly as big as you might thing. I think it is very comfortable to use, fits in all my pockets, and is an absolute pleasure to have. I guarantee you will not regret buying the Note. Just read the other reviews.

I'm not worried about pockets, my 7.0 tab fits in my pockets! I just thought.... If I buy this I can sell my Tab and put that towards this, as it'll replace it anyway!
I'll sell my tab on eBay me thinks!
EDIT: Tab in the marketplace, once thats sold, I will be buying note. Just found out that Nexus uses a poor GPU. I know its twice the speed of Galaxy S, but I'd rather have samsungs latest chip!
I just ordered a white Note from eBay. The way I look at it, an Aosp ICS rom will come eventually. Then you have the option be it Aosp, MIUI, or Touchwiz. And if one doesn't come fast enough, use the Note then sell it when the Nexus is available to you. I have an HTC right now and I switch between Aosp and Sense and its nice to have the choice.

Here are a couple of Nexus deal breakers for me.
Only 16GB of storage, on my 16GB Note only 11GB is usable, the rest are reserved for OS and apps. This limit my music files to 128 kbps and with 1GB of storage left. Also the 32GB Nexus is not available yet, and I'm not sure I want to pay premium price for a 16GB upgrade when 32GB micro sd card are around £40.
The 16:9 screen makes the phone easier to hold but awkward when browsing the web in portrait mode.
Also the processor and graphic chip are weaker than the Note, so not the best phone out there for future proof.
The only selling point of Nexus compared to the Note is ICS, which will be on the Note either from Samsung or developers. After almost two weeks of using the Note, I found the performance very smooth, so not in a hurry to upgrade to ICS.
Unless you really want an ICS device, I'd get the Note. I'm sure you will happier with the Note few months down the line when both devices have ICS.
P.S. Typing with one hand is awkward at best, and you are risking drop the phone while doing it.

You couldn't have summed it up any better! I'll probably order of Amazon.de tomorrow morn.
Portability
This device is more portable than a tab.
Think of it not as a phone, or a tab, but an XDA(convergent digital assistant)
I would not even consider a tab (or a laptop).
I have a workstation, and an XDA.
Have so for nearly 10 years.
The note is particularly portable and useful.

You are welcome, Amazon.de normally ship the phone out the next working day and it will take two more days for delivery via CityLink.
Also CityLink web tracking might tell you the phone will arrive the next working day after Amazon has shipped the Note. Don't belive them and don't panic when the tracking don't get updated for the 1st 24hrs.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been mulling over this decision for about 2 weeks at least
Here's my pros and cons, and these are too me, a US AT&T user still in contract:
Note Pros:
- Screen
- CPU
- Battery
- Staying with AT&T
Cons:
- Importing and Warranty
- No ICS yet. This is big as it looks like exchange support is greatly improved there, and I'd like to ditch Touchdown
I don't consider the stylus much of a pro personally - I don't think I'll use it
Nexus Pros:
- Vanilla ICS
- NFC
- LTE sim swap with my Xoom (this is kinda minor, as WiFi hotspot is basically the same except that I can conserve my phone's battery if I were to go on a road trip)
- Better dev and app support because it will be more popular
Nexus Cons:
- very worried about battery life with LTE. I'd hope to go data only too, so I'd have GooVe IP signed in all the time.
- smaller screen, though it might be OK as I've had a Dell Streak and so many apps don't deal with gigantic screens very well.
- maybe slightly worse camera from my investigations
I probably should just buy the Note and be done with it, but I want to see what Verizon's off contract price is. if it's $600 that's hard to then justify getting a Note for around $750 I think. $650-700 will be a note autobuy I think... then again my ETF would be around $150, but going data only will save in the long run, but not sure if I can reliably recieve calls on GrooVe IP... meh... decisions.
There IS a simple solution........... JUST GET BOTH !!!
It is what I am doing....... can't help myself
Nothing touches Galaxy Note on the market IMO. Engadget just did a hands-on test of the Galaxy Nexus and here's something they mention in their article:
It's still too early to comment on battery life, but so far we're not seeing any issues. While the Nexus feels quite snappy it isn't as mind bendingly fast as some Gingerbread devices (the Galaxy Note comes to mind)

The Note is a superior platform--bigger display, S-pen functionality, faster CPU, faster GPU. Why would anyone outside a developer want a Nexus? ICS is coming to our phone so there's no advantage there. People argue Touchwiz adds a layer of lag and I disagree, my phone with 2.3.6 gingerbread is lightning fast and I never see any lag.
where can I get the 2.3.6 version? I tried to update my phone but it said my phone was all updated.

Agree with everything you said. I've been doing my research on both since I had been going back and forth on what phone I really wanted and even went with just the AT&T GS2 for a few days but in the end both the GS2 and Nexus both are inferior devices to what the Note offers and outside of getting ICS early I can't see any reason to buy the Nexus unless you just need a smaller phone. I'd rather wait and get ICS shortly down the road than to get it a few weeks earlier on lesser hardware.

GT-N5100 Note 8.0 3G

Does anyone know when the 3G version will be released? I have read in many reviews that battery life on the WiFi is not that impressive, do you think Samsung would ship the 3G version with a larger battery?
in Malaysia the Note 8 is launched with the 3G version already, on Friday.
all specs remain the same throughout
Shame it could have done with a bigger battery by all accounts. I'll still get one, (im)patiently waiting for a 3G version, any colour, any storage size in the UK.
I have been using Galaxy note 8 n5100 as my main phone since i bought it last april 13 here in the Philippines, the battery is pretty good it can last 10 to 12hour, with moderate calls and always connected data, autosync on moderate browsing and email with minimal gps use, the battery on this phone is way better than galaxy tab 7 plus which it replaced as my primary phone

Currently, Samsung does not seem to have any plan or intention to launch a phablet version of the device in the US. You'll likely either have to wait for them to come to their senses, or buy an international version.

I'm interested for the the international version.
Heard anything about that?
The 3G price would seem to be hovering around the $800 mark based on eBay listings for the GT-N5100, but it's availability still seems up in the air. Hopefully someone outside of the US can point you towards a reputable international seller with stock.
Wow. It will be so expensive.
Thanks for your help.
The 3G version retails around $580 in Asia. Prices will come down on eBay very soon.
I'm waiting for it in the US as well. There's a site called Negri Electronics located in Las Vegas, that has a pre order page for it, listed at $660 at the time of this post. From what I've heard, the international version should be released April 30, but I haven't found any confirmation. As far as releasing s US version, I'm sure they'll release an LTE version sooner or later for use with CDMA networks like Verizon and US Cellular, but if you plan on getting it going on T-Mobile (like me), it'll only run on their 1900mhz frequency, which allows phone calls, but mostly 2g data speeds, unless you're in an area where they've refarmed the 1900mhz frequency to run HSPA speeds. Good luck and let's hope they bring this bad boy to T-Mobile!

^Yeah, I went ahead and put in my preorder for the 16GB 3G + WiFi N5100 from Negri Electronics last week. It was the least expensive site that I could find, and I know that they are a reputable seller. And since they are in Las Vegas shipping is relatively fast to the Los Angeles area.
Up until early yesterday the site said that the "Expected Availability" date was April 23rd, but just this morning (Los Angeles time) I checked again, and now it says May 8th. Gotta wait a bit longer now and I'm chomping at the bit as it is, LOL. Still, I wish it were closer to just ~$100 (or less) of a premium for the 3G/Phone version instead of the blatant raping that it is.
And we all know that Samsung would sell EXPONENTIALLY more of these if they matched the iPad Mini pricing, and actually released the 32gb versions at the same time as the 16gb base model, and for just $30-$40 more. At least we DO have the option to add microSD cards at a reasonable cost, but really Samsung?...a $100 more for a measly 16gb additional? That's just cwazy. (Yes, I have the same issue with Apple regarding this!) And Samsung makes the RAM memory chips so it's probably something like 50¢ more in actual production cost. :/
Yes. I still ordered one, but it was not an easy (or rational) decision that I made, LOL! It's actually just a bit depressing to contemplate spending so much for their "shiny plastic products", when the competition offer much nicer physical or cosmetic designs and materials (IMO), and at less cost.
I really believe that Samsung creates amazing products, and ergonomically I prefer most of their products over Apple's in that regard. However, they did miss the mark with the speaker and capacitive button placement on the Note 8.0. And I don't know what the designers were thinking with the camera protruding so much that the tab rocks from side-to-side when placed on a table, desk, etc. :/ So much for accurate use of the S-pen (the hero feature of this device)!
IMO, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the ONLY Samsung mobile electronics device that I can think of where I feel they came even close to matching the build quality and physical design of their competition. But once again, they priced it way out of the market. :/
And I don't mind the use of plastics one bit if they are used properly like the polycarbonates used in some of the higher-end Nokia and HTC devices. I truly feel that when Samsung gets their build quality up to par that the vast majority of the public will have no problem paying Apple-level prices (or more), and they'll sell a bazillion just like Apple does. But they're demanding premium prices, even over what Apple demands, but for an inferior physical design/build quality (IMHO). Why does Samsung not "get this"?!? People expect a BMW or Mercedes when they pay the price for one, not a Citroen (no offense to any Citroen owners).
With the Galaxy S4, if Samsung had just stepped-up the build quality alone (plus the 13mp camera), and nothing more as compared to the GS3, I would have purchased it. But with the same 'ol shiny plastic, its just a "Meh" product to me.
Also, I was really hoping that they would have included the hardware FM Radio tuner on the International version of the Note 8.0, just as they did on the Int'l SGS2, SGS3, Note (N7000), and Note 2. Initially, I didn't think that I would use the FM tuner at all, but I've found that I use it quite a bit...saves quite a bit on data as opposed to streaming.
LOL, sorry that I veered so off topic, haha. /END OF RANT
I am very much looking forward to using the new Note 8.0!
Does the Note 8.0 Jelly bean android has the Profile option? Can multiple users work on one Note 8.0 with different profiles with thier own custimazations like Nexus 10?

I meant to ask whether you also got the complementary 50 GB dropbox space with the 8.0.

I suspect the a good chunk of the additional cost here is the license for the Wacom digitizer and related technology. Samsung is being extremely aggressive in their pricing and product diversity as a way to combat Apple, so I don't think they would risk letting a well loved brand like Apple undercut them without reason.

Agree, but Do you think that even more diversification would help Samsung?
I think they should think of introducing a Note 8.0 sans the digitiser. Then they can really target the iPad Mini. It would still be a great product as many online reviews (Engadget) claim so.
That would be the true spiritual successor to the 7.7

Interesting to see how few threads there are here

Only three so far, 2 of which are default. Is this going to be worse than the att Note 4 threads? Does it represent the basic apathy Samsung has induced?

I think the problem is that they are flooding the market with too many similar devices. The group of people that this phone would appeal to recently bought the smaller model and can not upgrade yet. Luckily for me I am in my buyers remorse period. I am still not sure that I will buy this over the note 5.
i have galaxy s6 edge. i have family plan, i have upgrade available. There is NO "must-have" features that people want to buy this phone. where is the freaking usb 3.1 type c ? Since the screen is big like note4, why cant it displays Main and Edge screen at the same time like Note4 ?
so many ways samsung have messed up
1. Alienating buyers who buy a flagship - then a few weeks later another model comes out
2. prices
3. people want a sd card and bigger battery - and people wont mind extra thickness or better battery life
4. Competition - from other makers eg huawei -who do put in sd cards and decent batteries, and for the prices their
performance is more than decent. for a while notes strenght was the screen size but now others make big screens, AMOLED is not a USP
5. samsung getting cocky by thinking they have created a brand "note" and people will just go buy it....guess what samsung you arent apple!
6. no killer features eg motorola are putting in good batteries and good prices ...
i was upgrading phones yearly ever since the S2, all the way to S5, then the Note 4 last year, but don't think i'm gonna do it this year. i was really hoping they'd put the s pen on the edge+, but they had to separate them. i'm ok with no removable battery, I've had one on the note 4 ever since day one, but never really used it. i can live with no micro sd slot as well, but only if the 64gb version were less expensive, now the regular edge seems like a big bargain @ $750 for the 128gb (-$200 from T-Mobile). guess i'll have to wait until the note 6.
I think the biggest factors are Samsung divide the community with two phablets, there are some awesome phones coming out next month or so by google, and those with AT&T and Verizon learned a hard lesson with the note 4. Which is still yet to obtain permanent root ever...

Samsung is not screwd up totally but its going be scrwed.
I think the biggest factor is that very few people have the phone yet.
Maybe it's because all of us Samsung Galaxy S6 Non-Edge users are afraid to post for fear we're in the wrong place!
Umm. Phone is Couple days old.

Samsung S2 64 gb 9.7 with buying?

Looking for a basic tablet to run Plex and Sonos and I've been looking at the 10 in Samsung S2 64 gig. My wife had one at one time and she really liked it I liked how thin it was but not sure what a good price for one would be brand new. I found one for $300.00 USD from a reputable store brand new in box with full factory warranty.
What price would you pay for one brand new?
It depends the country I suppose , I bought it in Spain for 260€ . (It was an offer) about the tablet it works really well without any lag (I just returned a Lenovo yoga for that reason)

The Galaxy Tab S2 is still a great tablet, but $300 is a bit steep at this point. It's almost 3 years old, and has been replaced by the Tab S3, which has a faster processor. I wouldn't go north of $150-$200 at this point. Also, if mine broke I'd probably replace it with an S3.
The 64GB does change things a bit, but since you get an SD card slot, not that much. I have a 32GB and have had zero storage problems. I keep video, music, books, etc on the SD card and haven't even come close to filling its internal storage with apps.

Well do remember that for $300 brand new in box 813 version with 64GB of ram and the mSD card slot. I looked at the Tab S3 which was around $450 but I just had a hard time justifying that. Hell it's hard to find a good Android tablet now a days. Seems like they're either really budget or expensive. I'd be happy to find a one around $250.

As $300 is about £225, I'd just about pay this for a brand new 813, 64GB. I'd be much more comfortable paying $180 for a used version though.

It's certainly not a terrible deal. I still use my T813 daily, and I love the thing - to the point where I don't even bother carrying a laptop these days. (I have a travel keyboard) My only point is that it's hard to shell out that much for a tablet that is essentially EOL'ed by its manufacturer.
On the other hand, I just priced the Tab S3, and even in the 32GB config, it's a pricey machine. That might definitely tip the scales towards an S2, even at $300.
