Always on Display and backlight - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers
When I use "Always on display" on my edge the screen doesn't becomes completely black, remains like LCD screen with backlight on.
Check the pics: first with Samsung AOD and "gray" screen, second with Amoled Display app on play store with perfect amoled black.
How is your screen?
I've got this very same problem. I've tried resetting the AoD app's settings and clearing the device's cache in the recovery but that didn't fix it. I haven't tried factory resetting yet because I don't have the time now to set up my phone from the ground up.
Do you have any fix for this? Have you tried factory resetting?
* Please note that the diagonal lines are an artifact from my camera, and not actually visible on the display.
nope. I don't think that factory reset can solve this problem.
Today my s7 edge received the december security patch with 273 Mb update but the "problem" remains.
Now I'm using the pay app "Always on amoled" and it works perfectly
It might as well be a hardware issue with the AMOLED panel. After NYE, I'd try factory resetting the device first, and if that doesn't fix it, I'll probably send it for warranty repair.
nah, with another app is perfect. It's software related ( with some panels ) I think Samsung use different panel with different voltage or similar cuz my friends s7 edge is completely black and another one is like mine.
Hello, did anyone come up with a solution to this (apart from using the third party app?) I have exact the same issue, and my colleague at work also has an S7 Edge bought from the same shop with no problem. Mine used to be fine, but stopped being black a few months ago; it also happens with the edge screen {see pics} , but not the third party app. I have the unlocked EU Exynos variant. Likewise have tried different versions of the app, even different firmwares and all have the same issue.
I had this on my first S7 edge after 3 months... only fixed by replacing the screen unfortunatley (under warranty)
I have got this problem and i think I am going to use a guaranty, I dont understand how other third party app works, but there are problems with AOD.
Software bug?????
Interestingly, I had this problem with my S7 Edge from the time I purchased it back in August. It occurred with AOD as well as Night Clock...so much so that I didn't use Night Clock due to the faint "glow" right by my head. Nothing fixed it...factory reset, updates, display tweaks, nothing. My fiancee, who got her phone about a month before me, never had this problem. At the time, a warranty replacement was suggested, but I chose not to since it's wasn't a big deal I just lived without the night clock or AOD since I'd never used them before anyway.
Fast forward to January of this year. My device developed the green vertical line along the edge that persisted through reboots. Some others have reported pink or other color similar lines and it's a fairly well known defect. Had the phone replaced under warranty and the new device doesn't suffer from this problem. My fiancee's phone still has not developed this issue.
I'm wondering if the two items...the vertical line issue and the faint glow from the panel, are related and the result of a hardware defect. I'm going out on a limb and saying yes. I would suggest that anyone with this issue take advantage of a warranty replacement since it appears other screen issues might crop up as well.

It is not a problem. It is just demand of the users. In complete darkness, the AOD background becomes slightly gray, just to make sure that it remains visible.
Ofcourse it, too, can be fixed, by mocking Ambiant Sensor's values. I used XPOSED and installed "Sensor Disabler" from play store, and used it as an XPOSED Module, in side menu, selected "Light" and then "Mock sensor values". Make sure you just keep the value just above 0 lux ( 210 lux is optimum ). It is a sensitive slider, so just slightly increase it.
Auto brightness will be at constant level, better turn it off. However, AOD will work like a charm now! (PERFECT BLACK CONTRAST)

Defective / unstable backlight controller
Hi all I just want to share my experiences with my second Sony Z1 Compact, which after 1-2 month started showing problems with the backlight. The backlight is unstable, meaning that it is "blinking" while I am browsing webpages. It is most noticeable / present just after loading a page or after scrolling... after a while it seems to stabilize. It happens no matter if the backlight is set to automatic adjustment or set completely manually. Also the backlight is not able to be as bright as normal. For outdoor usage in sunlight or bright light the phone is useless due to this. Also, it barely changes the backlight strength/brightness if I adjust the slider. Something is completely wrong. It happens in Kitkat 4.4.4 and 5.1.1 and after factory resets. I have never rooted it. See my comparison videos here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd05C2cg5B0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9oVWpsxpjU Have anybody else experienced anything similar? I have returned the phone to service, but they claimed "no errors found" even though I explained how to do just like in the videoes. Now I've returned it to service again (as they didn't repair anything the first time) with some more details and with these videoes attached. I will be really mad if they try to give it back to me with "no errors found". I am 99% sure that this is a hardware problem, and that it won't disappear through any software updates or firmware hacks.
Always On Display keeps whole screen backlit
This started about 2 months ago, but the Always on Display and night clock features of my s7 (US T-Mobile variant) keep the entire screen backlit instead of just the active pixels. Edge notifications does not do this, and if activated turns the screen black until control returns to the AOD/Night clock app. I have tried searching, I have tried clearing the data and even reverting the AOD Service back to its factory version. Other threads only point to this being a scarce Galaxy s6 issue with their night clock, and even factory resets / firmware flashes didn't seem to fix it. Does anyone have a fix for this?
i have the same issue. did you find a solution yet? i tried my local support but the cant fix it
I returned mine for exactly the same issue, and Samsung said deffective screen and replaced it, one week later it's working again like the first day.
the screen is flikering
hi guys, need help with following: sometimes the screen flickers and stop responding overal....when he is in the mood. Sometimes works 2-3 hours with no problem and sometimes I cant use it at all - display is flickering and stop responding and if I lock the screen with power button and push the button again the screen is unfreezing for a while. I have tried everything- reinstal oficial ROM, root the phone and instal some custom ROMs, custom recovery, wipe and clean everything nothing helps. Мy suspicions are that there is some hardware problem and there is no software solution, but if someone has faced such troubles and find a way to resolve them pls share

Click to collapse it probably is a hardware issue, most likely the adreno GPU failing. Youve flashed the tar.md5 stock firmware and its still doing it? If so, its very likely a hardware issue

Some time the phone starts flickers on the Samsung logo at the beginning, some time passes the logo and initial setup and then starts....maybe your are right, I just love my phone and didn't want to RIP him. The only thing I didn't try is to install something different than Marshmallow and to decrease working frequencies. Can you please tell me if the problem is form GPU is it worth to be fixed?
you could try a new battery , my S3 had screen flickering problems at aprox 30% battery and then freezes and reboot and battery after reboot suddenly 2% and after that screen flicker and no power anymore. Try reboot with only charger connected and no battery connected
can't do that - the phone cannot be started without battery inside. Furthermore the battery is brand new original and I start using it after the problems started
You can look with phone info app from play store. Look which date the phone was made and when its more then 2 years then its hardware issue. On my display its only flickering on the very lowest brightness levels when i make it brighter the flickering is gone. When your phone is so too then its hardware issue but i will look with another battery from a friend and will report. I think its the display like plasma 1-2 years burn-in. Greetings from Germany Best Regards
I had the same problem with screen flickering with my s5 (QCOM variant). It had started after screen replacement in a repair point. It would get the worst when screen brightess was at the minimum level. Sometimes the screen would not wake up, and low temperature/ low battery level made it even worse. The answer to the problem is a defective screen which needs replacing. No other way as far as I know.

Greetings from Germany Best Regards Click to expand... Click to collapse I have the Samsung Galaxy S5. I also had the issue of when I had the screen brightness on auto it would flicker or if it was on a low setting it would do the same. If I raised the brightness it would stop. When the battery goes below 8% it starts flickering non-stop and the only way to stop it is to plug it in to an outlet. I took it to Verizon about 6 months ago (about the 2 1/2 year mark when it had been doing it since around 2 years) - of course their immediate answer was to do a factory reset and after that they had no solution (I did NOT do a factory reset). I'm eager to hear if a new battery corrects it or if it is indeed the screen/display. This may be a way to make sure we get a new phone every two years...
my case looks different. The flickering not depend form brightens or remaining charge in battery. Furthermore sometime it stops at all and I can use the phone without any problems for 1 or 2 hours. I did factory reset several time and reinstall software (official and custom). Perhaps there is some hardware issue and a phone upgrade is upcoming.
I tested with a battery from a friend yesterday and its the same. I will do this week a odin stock flash day and then i will see. But i think its the display.
weird screen issue
I've got this weird issue. it's now happened twice randomly. the screen fuzzes out, goes weird. nothing helps other than a reboot. Does it possibly mean the screen is dying out? here's a photo
It has happened with other users of this phone too. However it happens hardly once in a while like once or twice in a month or something. A simple reboot solves it as always. I would say no it's not dying, just some low quality panel used in this phone.
I've had this happen when on stock 7.0 and only recently. But like stated before only remedy is a restart.
I had the same issue with my moto x style. Its an hardware issue.which occures on both marshmallow and nougat.I replaced the display and it solved the problem. Only thing different in my case was, 1/3rd of bottom display had gray vertical lines.I got the display from aliexpress.
Pop-up view buttons hidden in Dark Mode for Discord, Maps, and others
I have a Galaxy S10 Plus, about a year old, unrooted, fully updated, and settings have been reset. This is my attempt to reach out for this issue before resorting to a factory reset that may or may not resolve it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/1nvkXKkVjUjqgro47 is a screenshot of the issue. This is with Dark Mode turned on. Some apps will not turn Dark and display the buttons properly, but they used to. It's been a couple months, and I don't remember any specific change. I have: Reinstalled affected apps where I could, some system apps are affected. Changed Darkmode off and on. Forced Darkmode. Reset All Settings. Nothing's changed the behavior. Has anyone seen something like this, have any idea how to resolve it? I'm prepared to do a full factory reset, but I'd prefer not to go through that hassle if there's an alternative. Edit: The buttons display normally in Light Mode.
Ha-ha, fun isn't it? Same thing on some of my apps. A small price to pay for the darkness... this site got it right though
