Did I break my sim card slot pins? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 are not reading sim cards anymore. I tested the sim in other phones, so the sim works.
At some point I started having problems with the Nexus5 Stock OTA (intermittent sim detection). Then permanently "no sim card".
Now after moving sim cards back & forth accidentally swapping the sim trays between the phones (tight fit), the Nexus 4 isn't seeing SIMs either. I've tried flashing different radios - no improvement.
Could I have broken my Nexus 4 Sim card slot by putting in a Nexus 5 Tray in once?

Based on your description, I'd say the pins may be bent or damaged.
Open the phones, remove the motherboard, take a bright flashlight and magnifying glass and for bent and/or missing pins.

SIM Hotswap

Hy,
I hotswaped my SIM card few times.
Went to Comm Manager, Phone OFF, take SIM out, put another one in, Phone ON...
I'm just curious if something could go wrong by swaping SIM this way, since it is a lot faster not waiting the device to reboot.
Cheers!
Hi
I am curious how you swap the sim without taking the battery out.

Bend it over the battery with a toothpick/stylus or fingernail, then just slide it out. Its actually easy, and it saves time.
Yep its possible !
I would be wary of bending the metal sim retaining bracket though.
On my Kaiser I had to pack it out with a piece of paper to ensure the sim made good contact - and on that phone I hot swapped with no problems.

I have been swapping sim cards quite a few times, I always use paper, the size of a sim card and leave it in inside the cover.
Very easy and the paper protects the battery and sim card from being scratched.

Nexus 4 not recognizing sim card

I printed out a template and cut my old sim card from Rogers. It's activated and the back of it says HSDPA.
I have tried inserting the sim while my phone was off. I turned it on and it still said no sim card. Do I need a new sim card?
One side of the gold chip touches the metal tray. Does that make a difference?

I chopped my tmobile sim card (from G1 days) and the gold chip was larger than the replacement sim that I got (G2X). I popped the newer sim into my G2X and activated. Then removed and used the template to chop and it detected immediately one placed in the tray.
Sounds like you need a newer card to me.
Hope this helps.

Yes you need to get a new sim card,
The problem with Nexus 4 sim tray is that it's metal and not insulated like iPhone 4,
This also was the cause for data drop on my side, I had my sim card replaced after my first one just completely not working anymore. And just so it won't happen again, I took a thin piece of paper to cover part of the sim card just so it doesn't touch the metal tray on both sides

My card was cut and seemed top work fine until it sit if popped outs place one day, took it it and grinded away the edgy bits that the cutter left behind so it was smooth and got nicely into the tray. Benn working ever since (fingers crossed!)

Single SIM -> dual SIM

So I have seen folk saying you can put dual SIM firmware in a single SIM model and it works.
Where does the second SIM fit/what physical modifications need to be done?

There is a dummy plate covering the second sim slot, right above the first slot.

So the plate is removed, and all that's required is an extra SIM card holder?

Extra sim card. You don't need a holder, same like the first sim slot. You'll just plop it into the tray.
To further discuss what dictionary was saying: all Moto X Play SIM card trays hold 2 SIMS - The difference between the two is that the single SIM models leave the factory with a plastic insert put in place with a gooey adhesive where the second SIM fits. The contacts are all ready there for it when the tray is inserted to the body. By carefully removing the insert & adhesive you are set for putting a second SIM into the Play.
HOWEVER you still need to flash the appropriate firmware to complete the transformation. There are more than one thread discussing the software side of things. FWIW.

So.... Anyone else having issue's with their SIM cards?

I bought this phone sometime in May 2015, and started having SIM card issues about 6 months ago. What normally happens is the phone will tell me it can't detect a SIM card, and I'd have to realign it. After upgrading to Marsh Mellow (NOT Beta), my device would tell me at least 3 times a day that it "can't detect a SIM Card". Well, today it REALLY can't detect a SIM card. Restarting, changing to airplane mode, clearing cache, even re-aligning the SIM does nothing. Heck, even putting it in the 2G slot does nothing!
So has anyone else experienced this issue? What did you do to solve it?
Could be a couple of things. Either your card is loose in the socket. In which case you can try shiming it with paper. Or the card is bad. Then you'd need to talk to your provider for a new one.

Had this problem 2nd day I bought phone, sim slots broke, the spring put the sims out and I have to force them in.
Now to put out the sim I use a needle to drag them out.
anyway don't know if a coincidence but after mm sim2 tells me random insert sim2 message.
I resolved putting some tape on the sim to tight in the slot.
a tip, put tape only on the center of the sim, so a stripe of tape in the center on long side.
in this way we force the sim only to fall in the middle making strict contacts.
Anyone having problems with SIM's not stay in the slots, don't loose your time with paper...
USE PLASTIC, you can cut a wire ribbon to the right length and put it between the SIM cards
I sent mine in for fixing. Its under warranty.

Yep also got this. Uk train tickets are the perfect thickness to slip into the slots and a micro sim sits nicely between both slots to keep both sim cards in place.... Shockingly poor component quality and its happened on both zf2's I've owned. Oddly with MM I'm having less "sim not recognised" messages. In fact none since I upgraded, might me be better quality train tickets tho...

Anyway on ebay the full slots replace is around 4 euro, for who has the ability to dismantle the phone. Search ""ze551ml cable slot"
Have you ever tried actually replacing your SIM card? I've had a SIM card error before and when moving it from my ZF2 to my wifes ZF2 and to my Huawei Mate 2, same error. They do actually go bad from time to time.
It's not cards on the 2 I've owned its the spring catch that holds the cards. Neither work anymore.

I had my phone randomly get the SIM card 1 and the SD card disconnected. Replaced the whole SIM module under warranty ~3 months ago.

Galaxy s4 i9505 sd card issue

My galaxy s4 i9505 phone recognizes the sim card. But it wont recognize my 32gb sandisk sd card.
And also after connecting it to a windows pc with proper drivers with kies installed, pc shows "device descriptor request failed, usb device not recognized"
Please help :crying:
Do other MicroSD cards work in the slot? Has this MicroSD card slot or the SIM tray been replaced before?
Try some alcohol on the card slot and see if that helps. If it doesn't, you may have to replace the card slot and SIM tray, both of which are on the same flexible circuit board. The replacement itself is inexpensive - about $10 - and can be done relatively quickly by you without having to take it to someone to service. One caveat: if the card slot and SIM tray has not been replaced before, make sure to peel the small rectangle of foam off the connector of the old tray and place it on the new one. The foam ensures the connector doesn't lift up under ordinary use, which can lead to inconsistent performance.

Thank you very much. I recently got this phone and I don't think the previous user has made any replacements. I tried several mico sd cards but none of them I found working. I'll try what you said. Thanks a lot :good:
