I think it is ridiculous to have the Xoom only be compatible with only Micro-SD card instead of regular SD card. It is not like the tab is so small that the regular SD card would not fit. It is NOT a phone.
Regular SD card has the benefit of:
1. Much much cheaper for a bigger space.
2. Did I say it is cheaper for a bigger space...?
3. Faster speed
I am not sure if it will use more energy and decrease battery life. But even still, how much more energy can it actually drain compared to the micro-SD card.
Sometimes I have no idea what the designers/engineers are thinking when they develop technology. There is always a missing screw somewhere.

What you forget is that by sticking with MicroSD it's more compatible with other devices. If you want to put that same card into your phone or any other mobile device, you have greater compatibility with MicroSD. If you want to put it in a regular SD card device, you can do so with an adapter, but you wouldn't have that same versatility/compatibility with a regular SD card as you would with MicroSD.

While I agree that MicroSD is more compatible with other devices, I would imagine a normal SD card would give the Xoom a more competitive advantage over the iPads in terms of the amount of overall storage that they can use. There are already 64GB SD cards, while I believe the max for a MicroSD is still 32GB. (Correct me if I am wrong.)

You're wrong MicroSD has support for SDXC however, most devices are not SDXC compatible. Just as you will find that most SD card readers are not SDXC compatible.

But if the Xoom had a SD slot instead of MicroSD you could just use that same MicroSD card with the adapter in the Xoom.
If you're gonne be swapping out a card from the Xoom to a phone, you might as well be using the SD slot to store the MicroSD to SD adapter.
It would cost Moto pennies to include the adapter in that slot, but still allow people to just dump it and use a regular SD card in there if they want to
In my opinion, its all about having options. (Thats why we like android after all) An SD card slot would give us options, to use a MicroSD in there with an adapter, or to use a regular SD if we'd rather do that. The MicroSD slot doesn't give us the same option in reverse.

Uh, in the situations you described, an SD card slot would be a MUCH better choice. Having an SD card slot would give you the OPTION to use an SD card, and the OPTION to use an SD to microSD converter and use a microsd card. So if you were concerned with sharing media between phone and tablet, you would just need that little SD to microsd converter.
Edit: I see now that this point has been made multiple times.

I wish it had an SD card primarily for viewing pictures from digital cameras.
I do not want to put a microSD card and an adapter into my DSLR, and as many have mentioned, the larger storages and faster read/write speeds are cheaper for an SD card versus the same capacity microSD counterpart.
SD card would have made so much more sense. Hell, I don't even care if Motorola included an adapter, who the **** here has more than one microSD card and zero adapters? I think I have like 2 adapters, maybe even 3.

Sorry man I don't really see it as a problem unless you have a camera with a regular SD card slot. If this is the case buy a MicroSD with the adapter thats what I do. If I buy any new cards I get Micro and make sure it comes with the adapter. That way I am #winning. The cards are so cheap anyway. Who would have thought you could buy and 8gb card for less then 20 bucks?

I understand the cost factor. When you get into the larger capacities the prices between a 32gb card doubles for a Micro SD. Its just another way for the man to stick it too ya.
I'm glad it's microsd, the xoom is thick enough as is imo

Honestly guys? You make think the tablet has "plenty of space", but if you've ever done product design or circuit board layout, you'll find that anything smaller makes a big difference. I used to think the change to MicroUSB from MiniUSB was lame, but I've laid out some circuit boards with both connectors, and *MAN* are Mini USB connectors huge!
I felt the same way about the change from SD, to Mini SD, to MicroSD, but honestly, regular SD is huge.
They did it because of size guys, thats all there is to it.
If you want to connect your camera, the Xoom supports USB hosting so you can just plug it right in (Does it work with cameras? I don't have my Xoom yet, but I thought they said it does or will support this), or just use a MicroSD card in your camera. 8GB cards are like $15, and do you really need that much space in your camera? I'm a photographer (well, its a hobby) with a Canon 40D and I only carry like 6 gigs of cards on me (a 4 and a backup 2).
If you never take the pictures off your camera I could see it being an issue, but I never do that for fear of losing them if I lose the camera or the memory fails.
Anyway, none of that matters. They did it because of size. It really does make that big of a difference.
Hi guys, I found a little thing I thought I might share, a mod to fit a larger than 64gb sd card to the Note 10.1.
I found an sd to micro sd adatpor here - www.linitx.com/product/sdmicro-to-sd-card-adapter/11922
It is an internal sd card adaptor so fits inside the micro sd card slot of your Note 10.1. It takes 128gb or 256gb sd cards and as they are formatted exFat the Note 10.1 will run them with no problem.
I use a Zenus case so I have the sd card adaptor stuck to the back of the Note and then put back in the case to protect it. I'm sure an enterprising person out there may decide to do an internal mod but I really don't have time and this works for me...
It works fine, I'm running a 128Gb sd card with no problems.
Thought it might be of interest to you lot so posted here...

I found the battery drain on the OTG was considerable.
It is very good battery life using the sd adaptor. I was watching movies and TV shows for a solid 6 1/2 hours with another 1 1/2 browsing and downloading and only got to 46% battery.
I thought I should mention I use only the 128Gb sd card but even so it has enough storage now....

Easeus is what I use to partition and format.
But question is will I be able to format exFat a 256GB SD card? I heard 128GB is the highest that can be exFat?
Is getting a new high speed SD Card worth it? I have a 32GB 10/Mbs HC SD card. Thinking of buying a 64GB or 128gb XC Class 10 but the way this whole adoptable storage thing is going I think I should wait. Is adoptable storage worth it right now? I've read people having problems with TWRP not seeing the SD. Apps not seeing the SD. Camera apps not seeing the SD. I'm stuck between going back to LP or buying a high speed SD on Marshmellow. What are your thoughts????

To better comment, would be necessary to know which are your expected usage over this SD. Will you be storing games to play (what would be hugely speed demanding) or would be only data like music/photos (which are less demanding) ???
The issues Marshmallow is presenting will be soon in the past so this should nt be a main concern but your personal usage necessities.

I remember GS 7 can't edit photos you saved in micro sd card because of silly android permission issue, has this been resolved in GS 8?
Anyone know about this yet?
I am annoyed they are not providing a bigger sized internal memory phone TBH and I edit all my mobile photos directly on my S6 at present.
No real need for addtional memory card if they made bigger phone size.

64GB doesn't go as far as it once did.
I've had 64GB internal memory since 2014 with my Moto XT1225 and I'm to the point I can only make one TWRP backup at at time nowadays. I used to keep two or three while evaluating different ROMs. This phone has no microSD card slot.
My next phone will either have 128GB internal memory and/or microSD card.
But even 3 years ago, 32GB was just too small.

Things like music, pr0n, etc can go on that
Move music, video and all other larger files to the SD card. You can also integrate the SD card as part of the internal memory. I don't do this, but you could. I just have all my music, pics and larger files on my SD card. Always have. I went from the 64gb Note 7 to the 32gb S7E and I still have about 10 gb left on the internal on the S7E. I was using about 50 gb on my Note 7 internal but I wasn't fully utilizing the SD card because the N7 had a larger internal memory. Also don't forget to move over larger apps to SD card. I also do this to save space on the internal. 64gb is enough since we can use SD storage. I got two free 256 gb micro SD cards with my Note 7's, so I have the room. Even filling up the card with movies (use the Movie HD app, google it) I still have at least 50gb free on my SD card. That's with over 100 gb used of pics, music and misc files on my SD card already.

I have a S7 G930F. My camera photos are saved into the SD card. I can edit them (crop, rotate, decorate etc).

I haven't picked my S8+ from UPS yet, but I believe this issue is app dependent.
If the app you are using has the code written in, it will ask you to give it permission to write to the SD card when you start it up.
It has been this way for a while now, including the S7.
So, for example, I use Quick Pics for my gallery and it asks for the permission when I start it for the first time and access the SD card.
I'm debating on getting a AT&T ZTE Blade Spark or Moto E4 Plus. The Specs are pretty much same, the only thing that is different is storage size. ZTE Comes with 16GB while the E4 Plus has 32GB. I would much rather save 50% and go with the Spark but 16gb isn't much storage for apps, So can I extend the storage space using a SD Card? 16GB isn't enough space for all my apps.
you can use an sd card as internal storage since it's running nougat, so yes, you can expand it

This is the card that I use. Granted it's on the heavy side both price and capacity but so long as it's a class 10 card you should be good. Going lower just increases your chances (by a hair but still) of random failures which can muck up and afternoon.
