Looking for a thread? - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

I am a new Axon 7 user, and it has to be one of the best phones that I have owned. I ran across a thread yesterday that was a guide on root and to unlock the BL. I cannot seem to find it. All of the ones on here seem to be outdated and I do not want to brick my new phone if at all possible. I have the USA version U and I am on the most recent update B29. The thread I ran across came with the image to flash back to B20 and root and unlock the BL and then came with the B27, B29 updates to flash in TWRP to get back up to date with root and unlocked BL. All I am trying to do is Root and unlock the BL on my phone? Tenars thread only has the B27 file and I didn't know if I flashed that aboot it would brick my phone or not. Anyways if someone could please let me know that thread or point me to a thread that I can root and unlock the BL on the USA phone with latest firmware B29.
Thanks,
Leroy

G900V from 4.4.4 to most current version with root?

Looked thru the other threads, and didnt see anything that pertained directly perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.
Have my stock S5 from verizon, on 4.4.4 NK2 firmware. Looking to update to whatever is the most current stock firmware with root. I'm coming to this from years of rooting Sprint devices, this is my first Verizon and I've been putting it off forever. Been getting the nag screen everyday now for a software update and I figured it was the time to update this and get myself root.
Thanks in advance for any help in where to look. Please forgive me in advance if this is a duplicate, I searched...I really did, but since its all new to me I wanted to ask.
Looks like the process is to flash 4.4.2, root, check if bootloader can be unlocked, and then proceed 2 different ways if it can be dev bootloader unlocked. If it can, unlock bootloader, flash twrp, and then flash whatever rom you want. If you can't unlock the bootloader, folow the guides to upgrade keeping root with safestrap and use roms that are TW for locked bootloaders. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I just got a 4.4.4 g900v myself in a trade and I'm figuring out how to proceed as well.
Ok, slight difference. You can root & check the bootloader from 4.4.4...

If you can unlock your bootloader (I could), then flash the bootloader of choice from that link above to correspond to the rom you want. I'll be trying out Phoenix with pd4 (installed from above link) from here...

Downgrading to a rootable firmware

I know with the Z3 i was able to flash an older firmware without unlocking the bootloader or doing any changes in order to be on a easily rootable version. Is it the same way with the X Compact?
There are some DirtyCow-tools to root phones, but I don't know if root is persistent or if it even works on the XCs ROMs. You can just download the earliest ROM you can find and try it youself. There are some ressources around, although not in this forum.
So yes, you should be able to downgrade and root, but so far nobody has posted any first person reports wether it works with the X Compact.
Thanks. I installed the firmware listed by Androplus in his advanced stock kernel 34.1.A.1.198 and worked from there. I guess in time there will be a way to root without unlocking bootloader but for now i'm happy. Now just waiting for a way to mirror the screen with the unlocked bootloader.

Planning to buy G935W8, had a few questions

Looking to buy this phone soon but I was just wondering about a few things. Im buying the canadian variant G935W8.
1. Can this device be rooted on nougat as well or only marshmallow? Im buying it brand new so I think it will probably be running the latest firmware.
2. Is there any issues with unlocking the bootloader? Is it neccesary to do so if you want root and custom roms?
the bootloader is not locked on the w8 as its the exynos variant and yes nougat can be rooted its the same as 935f

Thanks. Also another question I had. If the phone comes with marshmallow and I root it will I be able to install nougat roms directly or will I have to update the bootloader and modem? In that case would it be better to update it to nougat first and then root?
Updating your phone would cause you to lose root anyways as the file structure on nougat is completely different then marshmellow.
Rooting also prevents OTA updates, so you would end up having to install nougat manually.
I suggest you upgrade your software then root it. You can use systemless root from magisk. Using TWRP just flash the latest magisk file and you are rooted. The file will automatically root your phone as part of the installation process.

If you get it with MM (highly unlikely) just don't do anything and you should get an OTA notification otherwise you can download Odin, google it as I don't have a link and nougat from here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767144483 and you can flash it yourself now rooting is a little different then it used to be do a search on the s7 edge for the info on that
the reason is yes you will need to download the BL not sure about modem but you might as well do it too
I just rooted my G935W8 running 7.0 by following the instructions in the first half of this video.

Is unlocking bootloader necessary for twrp / root (us996)?

Just received my V20 US996 from Amazon coming from a Nexus 6p running PureNexus. Been checking out some of the roms but I'm at a loss. I've read so much I think I've confused myself even more. I've read sites outside of XDA that give detailed instructions on how to install twrp / root with no mention at all about the need to unlock the bootloader on us996 but then I read some posts here and it says unlock bootloader and others that just say to install rom you need twrp / root. So...... which is it? Do I really need to unlock the bootloader and if so can it be relocked in case phone has to be sent back to amazon under square-trade warranty?
Thank you in advance for any help in this,

LG V20 Root options after Oreo update.

Hi, I recently had this new oreo update on my v20. I want to root this device. I am new to understanding how rooting works. Couldn't find any basic guide to understand this process. Can someone please help me root this device, i have H990ds. Thanks!
Basically the root method is rollback to the december 2016 security patch update, do an exploit that installs an engineering bootloader that doesn't care if its locked or unlocked, and use the fastboot mode from said engineering bootloader to flash twrp. Guide for the H990 models is here. Flash a rom like Alpha Omega to get back to a current update.
The only things I'd add to it is replace the twrp from the guide with my current one from this thread and install a newer custom kernel like mk2000 instead of the old one in the guide.
