Why does my V20 keep being renamed to "S?" - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Ok, so you know how you can set a phone name for how the PC sees it, or bluetooth etc? Mine WAS LG v20...now it keeps resetting itself to the letter S. No idea why. I keep setting it back to LG V20, and it keeps going back to S. wtf is S!?!?

nobody ever got this?
Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk

...seriously, I'm the only one? it keeps doing it and idk what's changing it. it just renamed itself to S again.
Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk

S as the name or s as the drive?
Your computer is going to recognize the phone as a drive letter. A, K, S, Z, etc.... That part you can not change from being a single letter and into some long version name.
You can how ever give the S drive (aka....your V20) a description name.
Without having your computer in front of me. It almost sounds like your computer is displaying the drive letter and not the description name.
You'll have to right click on the phone under my computer. And then check out under preferences or settings I believe and see what your phone is actually set up as for your computer to recognize it.

s as in name.

Should have asked before.
Is the S only on the computer, or does it change the name under the phones settings> about phone?

S is storage. When you plug the device in, the device will ask if you want charging, file transfer, photo transfer, or the option to record sound from PC.
If you don't get any options, you must have made a default option.

wait, you're saying depending on what you choose as default, it changes the actual phone name to that? why? that makes absolutely no sense and no other phone has done this. in settings, about phone, phone name is actually just S.

Where in the phone is this occurring?
There's another recent thread describing this problem and the cause of it was the SHAREit app:

[Solved] G2 goes into USB storage mode when plugged in

At some point after I perma-rooted my G2 and flashing bacon-bits my G2 goes into USB storage mode as soon as it's plugged into a computer.
Also, I don't know if it is related, the volume name is set to a stream of random characters "s2?:9y2% L&". Before it just showed up as a generic volume.
I //really// don't want this behavior because I tend to use adb to put files on my phone.
As to the weird volume label would it be safe to change to something meaningful with my computer or is it set by Android?
Do you have Winamp installed? That has a setting to auto-enable USB storage mode... drove me crazy for a week.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Thank You!
I would never have thought about looking there...
As to the weird volume name, I'm just going to turn my phone off and put the card in a sd-card adapter and see if the weird name shows up, and if it does, I'll just use mlabel to change it to "My G2" or something...
I had the same problem and just figured it out a few days ago myself, lol
Use PowerAMP! It's better IMO.
Yup, both WinAMP and DoubleTwist do this by default. Evil.
this was driving me crazy for the last couple of days!!
It wouldn't be so bad if the software, you know, mentioned at any point that it did this!

Just got PowerAMP. Very nice! I love the audio boost, and swipe control.
I'll have to try PowerAMP.
I actually like WinAMP now that I found the setting to turn auto-mount OFF!
Not that I don't think that they're boneheads for making that the default.
Wow, thanks! I also have both winamp and poweramp and never would have figured that out! Was so not understanding why it was doing this...

Oh wow I remember that WinAmp did this when I installed it initially, but totally forgot about it tonight when I flashed a rom and I was going insane looking for the system option for it. This thread FTW lol

Update to 4.1.2 waiting to download

Hi Guys,
I have a question about the update to version 4.1.2.
When I go to Settings > About > System update, I see that the update to 4.1.2 is found but it says that it is waiting to download but it stays like that forever and nothing happens.
Has anyone else seen such behavior? Do you know why it is happening and if it is normal?
Thanks!
Maybe a stupid question but... are you connected to WiFi when you see the message?

Make sure you have a good WiFi connection. The WiFi in my dorm shows a good connection (String signal) but the internet can sometimes timeout easily. Make sure your connection to the internet is superb.

Yes, I know what the arrows mean but my question is why this is happening? Is there a way for me to force the download? Or maybe I just have to wait more (it's been like this since yesterday)?
Try powering off the Nexus and then starting it up again. If that doesn't work, try using the technique to trick it into updating mentioned in this thread (yes, it's for a different situation but still worth a shot)

Hey, thanks for the suggestions. I tried powering off and on and it didn't work.
Then I tried the method to force stop the Google Services Framework and when I went to the System updates screen, I had the option to check for updates. I checked and I am back to where I was before - the update shows but is only "waiting to download"

Phone Offline

I finally upgraded adb to show my device, but when i try using android commander it tells me the phone is offline. I think this "offline" mod is keeping me from install the hotspot mod. Just curious if anyone knew how to fix this "offline" issue.
You need to be using the latest adb to fix the "offline" issue. Type adb version to see what version you are using. I think the latest version is 1.0.31

I did use the latest and adb now shows the latest. But Android commander says it's still offline. I'm also having an issue install a simple mod and am wondering if this offline thing is causing issues.

I had that same issue when I first got adb going on this phone. I forget what I did to fix it though, I was drinking at the time. Be sure you have debugging turned on, and also be sure to watch your screen on the phone when you connect. There is a pop up asking something about rsa keys that you need to tap ok, and also check a box allowing it each time. Good luck.

No I think it's just the 4.2.2 locked up tight....I got the RSA key to come up once but I never got connected, going to setup ADB on another computer see if I can get that one right. I used it with my EVO before but the GS4 is killing me!!!!!
This has happened to me twice.
Once when I somehow didn't say it was ok to use the RSA key (I think i was drinking at the time), and once when I used some cheap USB cable that came with a cradle I had bought. I had heard people mention cables in the past, but never believed them until it happened to me.
Same cable works fine with my HTC... Samsungs USB can be funny at times...
I did install on my laptop and got the RSA key to come up but didn't help my problem. I can't get this hot spot mod to stick. I've used 4 different cables.

[Q] My wifes G2 was remotely Hacked

Has this happened to anyone elses G2? I am on verizon with 4.4.2 update and not rooted. He had complete control of her phone. Was writing me messages and kept opening pics of my 4 yr daughter. I diconnected the wifi and mobile data. He still had control of the phone. Then I factory reset it and he still was on it. Verizon is sending me a new phone and getting a new sims card. Is there a way from stoping this from happening?
I truly dont believe though that when you switched off network that someone can still connect. Anyways:
firstly, recap if the phone was ever left unattended, letting someone install something on it.
Dont do that, even if if it has a password on it, anyone not looking away when entering it on the street can see what the pincode/password is.
Apps not from play store, dont install. Ever.
Change all passwords on a safe medium (multiple antiviris vendors scanned) of wifi router, to anything, including recovery questions, make them different and non logical or affiliated to you.
Run virus scans on computer and or any medium that ever connected phone.
Then check apps/websites of mail and such for activity, likely activity at times you didnt use any of the services. Anyway facebook and such lets you close open sessions anywhere.
That should do the trick. And big tip dont get paranoid Just ponder how somehow got acces.
I find it hard to believe that someone could still control the device after a factory reset. Highly unlikely I would say.

1. I really doubt this happened.
2. After disconnecting wifi and mobile data, it would be impossible
3. Factory reset would definitely make it impossible
4. It's more likely that the touch screen is having phantom touches
I had issues with phantom touches on my Optimus G. Drove me batty. Some days it was impossible to use the phone, as the touches were all registering in the bottom half of the screen where the keyboard appears. So random letters would be inserted into words.
Turned out to be a driver issue with the custom kernels in some of the ROMs is using.
Factory reset and being more selective in the kernels I ran fixed the issue.
If it's still happening after a factory reset, then you have a defective touchscreen. Replace the phone under warranty.
Typos courtesy of my LG G2 (D803) running Mahdi-ROM.
I really have no reason to lie to you guys. The messages stopped after I disconnted the internet but the screen was still jumping around. That is why i figured he still had access.
I just received the new phone today. Should I go ahead and get a new sims card or I be ok with the old one?

its possible, if he were root and had something installed as system app.
also you can set stuff like tasker to autimaticaly turn network back on.
what did the messages say, cause if they were gybrisch then it seems like phantom touches.

I would, you could have the old encryption method on the sim card which would make it easier to root the card. But I am guessing what happened to your wife was something more like an AndroRAT exploit.
It could be possible seeing as all you need is a phone number to find your location by txt msg, and that can be done silently without you ever knowing.
Seems it's a built in part of the RADIO AT that providers can use, if you're on the inside and know how it works it'd be a doddle, but if the txt msgs were gibberish I'd go with the majority with faulty touchscreen/drivers and nothing to worry about
Bashing away at my HTC Desire C
Tell to the hacker to try to hack my phone instead, I don't care. I will shoot exclusively for him a pic of my arse as award if he manages to hack it and he can print it, or try to sell to the newspapers.
BTW, I'm not so anxious about apps not installed directly from Play Store. You can easily check or restrict the permissions of any app as root user. I never yet faced the problems.

My Op5 just called someone on its own, no pocket butt dial. How is that even possible

Ok my Op5 has a pin and fingerprints, also bluetooth was off, so no BT Headset mixup there either.
And still, somehow, while with screen off, charging and laying locked on a table far away from me, it just called my father at 3:40 am...
i only noticed that cause my phone was ringing unexpected, remember its still 3:42 am... and my (very pissed) dad was calling me back, asking me why (the f.) i called him in the middle of the night..
which i clearly didnt.. but when i checked the call log, there was really an outgoing call at 3:40 am lasting 43 sec.
how is that even possible ?
im on OOS 4.5.8
Happened the same to me with my previous phone and it was my smartwatch the problem, in the middle of the night I somehow touched the screen and it called a random favorited contact...
Also do you have perhaps OK Google enabled?
You should turn on pocket mode from settings...

Anti virus on Android is a joke and completely useless. It won't detect anything that could be causing it.
The only way to know for sure is to catch a logcat when it happens. Other then that I would do a full wipe and only install apps from the play store.
