External drives no longer shared over network after latest PMS update - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Slightly strange one, just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem?
Up until a couple of days ago I was able to access an external hdd connected to my Shield TV over my network through the access folders on my PC option in the settings.
However, since updating the Plex app through the play store the other day, it now only displays the internal storage whereas before it showed the internal storage and my external drive. I haven't adopted the hard drive or anything like that, the only difference is installing the update. Anyone else have similar issues?

I am having the same problem with the latest update. I tried everything including a full reset, and formatting the usb drives. Hopefully the will release an update soon to correct this.

[Q] Local storage missing when USB connected

Has anyone else noticed that sometimes when they connect their USB in mass storage mode that sometimes you can't see the phone, but can see your SD card?
It seems that randomly, perhaps from some App that I haven't been able to identify, my /mnt/sdcard gets unmounted. When that happens, and I connect with USB to my pc, the only thing I'm seeing is the /mnt/sdcard-ext which is the physical sd card. It's easily recoverable with a reboot, but it's annoying.
I'm wondering if anyone has noticed this behavior on their Atrix and/or knows what it might be linked to.

70it 250gb hdd

A friend of mine bought the 70IT 250GB model (after my recommendation of the 101) and is having issues with it.. Any time there is media files stored on it the internal storage seems to disappear.. meaning you can not browse the internal storage from the device. you can still connect it to the pc and see it / edit it but not from the device..
has anyone seen this before??
definitely no....
I've got the 250GB, and if I understand correctly, I have seen this issue before.
If they go into the music app, can they see their files if they go to 'storage' rather than 'artists', 'songs' etc?
If that is the case, then they can manually restart the media search on the HDD through settings > repair and formatting > reset multimedia library.
after I did that once, I've never had any troubles

No when we load music on the device the internal storage is no longer recognized. If we do a full restore either via the boot menu or the repair function (and the HDD is formatted) once we reboot the devices storage suddenly missing and unavailable..
I think he has decided to return the device however..
beware of it, only way to solve is to 'reset library', but you better backup all of your content in 250HDD, because my case is press reset library really help me re-find the missing files, but some video has been deleted.

I've seen it reported by others and not only once.

Not sure but I think it happens on the Archos with HDD.

Had the same problem with my 250GB Archos HD. Sometimes, after shaking the device, you hear the HD spinnig up and mounting. And sometimes the HD stops while working. No chance to repair. Send it back to Archos and got a new (working) Archos after some days.

Problems with MTP and USB access

hi, this has been bugging me for quite some time now eversince i've got my xplay. it seems that there are times that i'm unable to access my storage properly via MTP or storage device. it charges the phone and i can see the device on my device manager but nothing comes up in accessing the contents. my only solution is either by luck, with plugging and unplugging the unit or uninstalling the driver so it could detect it again but sometimes recquires me to restart my pc. my last resort is to unmount the sd card and go through a usb adaptor.
Got the same problem
No idea what causes it.
Also got random replugs where the pc thinks it's newly connected, rather annoying when watching a movie on the pc.
can anyone provide a probable cause for this or any solutions perhaps?
After it got really bad (rebooting phone not working and all several times) I uninstalled com.sonyericson.usbux
You can't acces your SD card anymore but atleast you can charge and push-pull things over adb.
my phone still has the stock kernel and i haven't rooted it yet. though there are still times that i can't access my mem card.
MTP wont work at all for me so I cant update firmware
MTP is far more picky and problematic than a logical drive. I run into data transfer issues with the Iconia A500 due to this, but zero problems with my gTablet that sees the internal space as a logical drive.
Wait a sec- The microsd is seen by the Sony firmware as MTP? That seems odd, since I am not aware of other OEMs that map microsd that way.

winamp dies after you connect phone via usb

Anyone else using winamp, and has an issue where if you connect your phone via USB (and hence unmount your storage/sd card), afterwards, it keeps crashing? Even after your storage has been remounted and can be accessed by any other app.
Basically, if I want to transfer files to my phone, I have to reboot afterwards. Not a major annoyance but definitely an annoyance.
Its not winamp as it didn't do this on my N1 or my sgtab, just my atrix
Hello
Ive got the same bug, with winamp after connecting the Atrix to PC.
I believe its something to do with the winamp that was updated in the last days, since all the other apps that can access the SD, were able to get to the SD without problems, only winamp not. notice that the widget shows that there is no SD card detection....
Mine too was restored successfully after reboot...

External storage as internal problems

I have a WD 4tb my passport external hard drive that has been giving problems with the shield tv ever since i bought. I bought it specifically for the shield as an internal storage device. ill format it as internal storage, a few days later, it cant recognize the HDD. when I go on kodi it says "waiting for external storage". it happens all the time. I thought if i power down the shield instead of sleep mode it would fix it, nope problems still there. can anyone help me. i dont want to buy a desktop external hdd because im not going to have use for this hdd after i paid for it already.
Any particular reason as to why you want to format it to be Internal?
Dont know what you're using to plug it in but try with another enclosure, cable and if using a usb hub in between then try pluging the hdd directly to the shield TV and make sure it receive the proper power to work. I've also read that the Shield tv has some issues handling with more than one partition in external hdd's.
4TB should work but google search for users that report success with 4tb+ HDD, I've seen up to 3tb around.
If still you can't make it work stable then contact nvidia support and create a thread at geforce forum.

Hrm funny enough, my Nvidia Shield TV has killed 2 external hard drives now in this exact same situation... Both older mechanical hdds... I'm running a sector by sector scan on the most recent drive now...
I had the same problem, until finally my data got corrupted. I suspect the Shield didn't have the ability to consistently power the drive and other usb devices. Even using a powered hub.
I've since switched to a WD desktop external drive with its own AC adapter. I haven't had any issues in the month since I've done so.
In my case, I needed to format as internal storage to run a Plex DVR. It won't work as external storage.
