Stock Android possible?

Been many a yore since I've been on Android consistently, been out-of-the-loop since the earliest days.
Just curious, is it technically possible to get a "Nexus-like" experience on a device like the Note 4 nowadays?
I'm attracted by all the sw/service benefits of a Nexus device, but I really love the hw of the Note 4*...
Is it possible to have "the best of both worlds" or close? I realise it's not an option so early in the device's life-cycle, but later perhaps?

What you want is a rom based on AOSP (like cyanogenmod). It has the advantage of being nearly stock android with updates nearly as fast as google can push them out. It is much much quicker than carrier updates. Plus, AOSP is community/google supported so you can count on updates long after the carriers stop supporting your phone. This support is what allows kitkat to run on a galaxy s2 or a barnes and noble nook. lol.
So the catch to all this is you MUST have an unlocked bootloader. ATT and verizon are out because they have locked their bootloader.
On the note 3, people who had the tmobile note 3 (unlocked bootloader) had kitkat months and months before the ATT touchwiz kitkat was pushed by ATT.

But I'm not worried all that much about carriers not supporting my phone...
I usually buy unbranded/unlocked (i.e. outright: it makes more sense in my country -not USA), I imagine the same -or similar- applies to ODM/OEM's?

How far out are they (AOSP-based ROMS like CM) exactly from being stock Android?*
Are there many major differences, or only some minor ones, what are they exactly?

It's as close as you can get, almost to the point of being the same. I honestly can't think of any major differences. My wife went from CM to a nexus 5 and she new exactly where everything was. My nexus 7 interface looks like my cm11 nook tablets.

Apart from the UX though, what are all the major (or minor) services/functionalities you lose?*
I mean mostly compared to stock Android that's found on the latest Nexus devices, but I guess also compared to Samsung's spin.

The main issues with going to AOSP are the inferior camera app and the lack of multiwindow support. With the big Volantis tablet coming out soon, Google may finally bake some multiwindow support into "L", and maybe devs can use the RAW access APIs to fix the camera, but I wouldn't expect miracles out of the box.
If you do want AOSP, you'll probably want to get a Qualcomm-based Note instead of an Exynos one - for various reasons a lot of the dev goes quicker on the Qualcomm platform. Not sure which will be the standard version in your country.

That's literally it? That's nothing if that's all there is!?!
I'm used to hanging out mostly on quite esoteric/hack-ish platforms, so if that's all I have to deal with, "no biggy".

Yeah I suspected that might be the case, I haven't checked that yet, I'm in Australasia/Oceania, Australia specifically.
I hope I've lucked out there, IIRC the international version (i.e. not local/telco-centric) usually is Qualcomm isn't it?

No need to bump your post 3 times. I would suggest you go on youtube and watch some video reviews. You will find that it is very much nexus like with no features lost.

Pretty sure you'll lose any proprietary stuff. Like the heartrate sensor...etc...especially the special uses for the S-Pen.

He's talking about the difference between stock android on a nexus device and aosp. The stock rom from Samsung is a totally different ballgame.

No I'm talking about all 3, i.e...
If I switch to AOSP (CM etc) what features will be missing* compared to: (1) stock on Nexus devices, & (2) stock Android for the Note 4.
Although I'm mostly interested in the former...
As I can easily work out the latter once (if) I have a Note 4, simply by using Samsung's flavour of Android for a while.

So we've basically established in previous posts that AOSP = Nexus features wise. No need to hash that out again.
Compared to Samsung's stock rom there is a TON of stuff and even more stuff when compared to Samsung's stock rom after each carrier has had it's way with it.
1. Multi windows
2. all the Spen features (Some spen features can be added back. See thread in note 3 forum.)
3. Tmobile wifi calling
4. Touchwiz
5. Different Notification pull down.
6. Different settings menus.
7. Carrier Bloatware
8. 4K recording not available in stock AOSP. Some have used Oneplus camera app. (Camera app not as good as Samsung's stock)
9. HDMI out not working.
10. NFC not working on some builds.
11. All the Samsung specific apps like milk music and SBeam.
12. Tethering limitations on the Carrier version stock (This is a big one)
I'll add more as I think of them...

But have we really? Not so sure about that. What's been put forward so far doesn't seem iron-clad conclusive.
Compared to Samsung's stock rom there is a TON of stuff, and even more stuff when compared to Samsung's stock rom after each carrier has had it's way with it.
1. Multi windows

Don't care about what carriers may or may not add, I'll most likely be getting one that isn't carrier-based.
Even if I do get one from a carrier it won't be a US-based one, it'll most likely be from Telstra, & IME it never adds anything of value.

I thought we did. lol. I don't know how much clearer we can get. Google controls AOSP. It is stock android through and through. Go read up on what AOSP is and then read what CM is.

Android 6.0

Hi,
I'm new to OnePlus, got my OPT last Monday.
Coming from a Nexus 5, I'm used to getting new versions of Android quickly.
For those with experience with OnePlus, how fast can we expect to get a version of 6.0 on our OPT ?

It took the quite a while (several months) to push official lollipop builds to the one... Hopefully they are quicker this time. Custom builds will probably be available much sooner

on my OPO, i received the update to lollipop almost a year after it was introduced on the first handsets. and when I got it, i switched to CM (community version) as they had tinckered to much with stuff like the default/built-in e-mail app.
I have already switched to CM (beta) for my OPT, because i did not like OxygenOS

Yes, I figured I'll have custom ROM & Kernel (I'm on AK already just for color calibration).
What were the best ROMs on OPO ? Do you think we'll have good developers on the OPT ?

I have only used cyanogenmod on my devices, nothing else. So I cannot say if one ROM should be better than another.
Regarding OPT, it would be great to reach a point where there could be an officially supported version of cyanogenmod

How do you like the OPT so far? I'm a long time Nexus user, but after a drop device my N5 is now dead which has me looking for a new phone. I was looking at the OPT and almost pulled the trigger on one, but after reading about the Oxygen OS it seems like a pretty buggy OS. How do you feel about the OS coming from the stock (I assume) android experience on the N5?

I was a fellow Nexus fanboy who switched to the OPT. The Oxygen OS definitely has its pros and cons, but I believe the OnePlus team will send some OTA's here and there to address the issues. Alternatively, with Grarak porting over CM to the OPT so quickly, I use CM as a daily driver. The OxygenOS has a lot of great features which are not included in stock Android experience. Overall, the OPT in my opinion is well worth it.

For now I still miss more development options, but the phone is nice. I'm sure development will pick up with Oneplus getting their logistics have together and getting more devices out there.
For me all the negative press is mostly fan boys not getting their invite quickly.
The size takes time to adjust to, but Oxygen with Xposed and AK kernel is pretty sweet right now!

Oxygen defiantly sounds and look great, but I was just a bit put away when I read the OP forums about the bugs... but as with most of these things, it's the people who are unhappy that are loudest.

Sorry, for hi-jacking your thread about 6.0 for the OPT. I was actually looking for a bigger screen so 5.5" seemed to be a good middle ground. I've only been able to play around with the OPT with the hydrogen OS (I live in Hong Kong),and I liked the size of the phone but not Hydrogen OS.

Im looking forward to android 6, hope its good for op2. With any phone ive had, 5 has been v poor compared to 4.4.2 (battery life and performace), hope 6 can shine for us

I know 5.5 is now the middle ground, I'm just saying that coming from a Nexus 5 for the last 2 years, the jump is not that easy. I'm sure I'll be fine after a while. But right now, one handed use is difficult for me (and I have somewhat big hands), especially with the lower buttons at the bottom (I went back to on screen navigation bar).

The main features and enhancements that you will probably end up noticing are our custom Quick Settings tile reordering functionality, floating window support, immersive mode, the new on-the-spot interface and CM Theme Engine.
Quick Settings tiles can be managed with ease - you can reorder the tiles by simply long pressing them, remove them by dropping them in the trash bin and add them back in from the add panel. The hidden tiles will be out of your way when checking the notifications but will still be usable from the add panel without any hassles if you want to do that all of a sudden.
You can make an application float either by long pressing a notification and tapping the floating button or by tapping the floating button for the application in the recents list. Additionally, you can make peeking (heads-up) notifications open floating windows by enabling that behavior in the "Floating peek" tile.
Those are not the only changes and features we have added. There are a variety of improvements to CAF devices (OnePlus, OPPO and others) which add custom kernels, advanced gesture and buttons control and more to provide a great experience on those devices. Of course we have spent a lot of attention on making all the visual details look right and on making all the functionality work right.

Seems to be a popular ROM and people are excited to see it back in action. That's what.

My nexus 6 is still on paranoid Android version of 5.1.1 how do I update to 6.0? Anyone know what I need to do (bootloader's radios etc) to successfully update? I'm currently encrypted and don't mind staying that way.

Or use this... [MOD][GUIDE] Unencrypt/Flashable - Disable Force Encryption - Any Rom/Kernel and you can use the stock kernel and remain unencrypted.

I've been running this since the announcement yesterday and everything is going smoothly so far. Very stable so far with no reboots or app crashes. Not a ton of features in the rom yet but I'm sure with some time this will be an amazing Rom. It pretty much already is.

I messed up and allowed the ROM to boot before I could install a custom kernel or use that guide. TWRP is asking me for an encryption password now. Is there some kind of default password that got set or am I screwed?

Just skip it, I forget what to hit but don't type anything and hit enter or something, it'll skip thru it

I tried their new build.
Wasn't too impressed. Charging is painfully slow, camera is horrible, flashing a custom kernel breaks the camera and it was a real challenge to actually get the ROM to boot.
Hope they fix it in their newer builds.
P.S: I'm talking about the 1+1 here, not the N6 in case anyone was wondering.

Why is oneplus x overshadowed by oneplus 2 and 3 ?

I mean, it still packs some decent specs under that beautiful design, regardless of performance. I mean, try to buy it from their site, it won't be highlighted or something, but op2 and op3 are. Try to find some oneplus x guides, op2 guide will show up, and this goes forever, you get it. MAY I MENTION IT's august 2016, the phone came in late 2015 and we still didn't get a 6.0 update ? I bet they gave up on oneplus x and we're never gonna get a 6.0 update actually. Some shameful shi.t right here. MORE MONEY, MORE PROBLEMS I SUPPOSE. They are blinded by the tremendous success of op2 and op3 phones so they dropped oneplus x "for good". That's how i'll never stick to oneplus again.

there is no need of this anxiety, CyanogenMod already has been released marshmallow of OPX and there are many developers ROM available you can try them i would like to prefer Sultan's ROM because i am using and it is really very good and battery backup is great SoT is unbelievable 4 to 5 hours. don't worry man there is always a hope..by the way oxygen os is no so good..... sorry if my narration is not make you happy

yes there is need for this anxiety, cyanogenmod has been released but there is no stable version out yet, yes there are many rom's available but everyone of them has one bug or the other, i would prefer stock rom because they have almost minor to no bugs because casual users like me dont go testing every feature of the rom after flashing. why would this matter you ask then lemme give you an example from a casual user's point of view, i'm chilling with my friends & they show me some content (might be any personal song or video) & i ask them to transfer it to me via bluetooth like any casual user & i find out that the bluetooth function is broken & that would be an embarassing situation i wouldn't wanna be in.
Pls dont get me wrong im not slandering the hard work of custom rom developers, im jus stating my point as a casual user whose not interested in SoT but just wants to feel safe knowing all the features of my phone are working well.
Many of you will say stick to oxygen 2.2 if you want to feel safe but i would say my one plus x is not that old and 7.0 is about to release im not asking for the latest but atleast give me 6.0 which even cheap & crappy chinese phones come with now a days.

give a try to Sultan's ROM you will be not disappointed, because there is no bugs everything is working fine. you can use it like casual user or if you need root access then you have to flash superSU above than 2.6 version. how it will help you else upto you

Well im not talking about particular rom developers, they are in no way linked to the company itself. They develop custom roms for plenty of devices. As far as these goes, i tried paranoid, which is incredibly nice looking but it drains my battery pretty fast with wi-fi on all the time, and i can't connect to mobile data on either of sim cards. Sultan's xda is not any different from official cm13 rom, as far as i could tell, and any other cm13 roms for different devices. It's just the same interface im fed up with it. Oxygen os is a big dissapointment, i dont like it at all. ON THE OTHER HAND, H2os is perfect for me, perfect design, incredibly long battery life, but not quite good performances. Anyway, i bought the phone mostly cause of it's very nice looking design so i got to stick with lags in google play store.
Anyway, my point still stands. They been blinded by the success of oneplus 3 so they decided to forget about oneplus x. I bet we won't get android 6.0 at all.

no offense, but i would like to say i love my phone with custom ROM and i would suggest you guys should purchase google nexus phone if you really need latest Android and i am also thinking about but i have two sim that's why i purchased OnePlus x phone because of their commitment that they will provide latest Android but they betrayed us. Unfortunately we can't do anything despite shouting...is there any options? by the way i am happy by rooting my device and i like custom ROM.

Coldfear I can't agree more with you, that's why I stick to OOS after have tested around 5 custom roms in my phone. Simply for the rock solid signal reception, the Super fast 4G, the unbeatable photo quality (yes I've tried sultans hal, but apart from fps, nothing comes close to stock camera image quality) and the fact that as a casual user all the every day features of the Rom are readily available to me when I need them. On the other hand all devs put their best efforts to provide a features rich roms and should continue doing so, in order satisfy all kind of users. Rom choice It's really a personal matter. Everyone keep up the good work.

A CM nightly with broken features can happen anytime, but then you flash a release from another date that corrected the casual bug. That's how its supposed to work. If you find a good build you stay with that for a month at least then update. If you are not happy with the new update you go back to the rom you were using. And with twrp everything is easy, and finish in few minutes. And lets not forget that OOS 5.1 has released many updates and users are still complaining about bugs there too. Anyway I think that OPX team has done a good job with OOS, they are still updating it in a time when everyone is focused one OP3.
OP3 is the flagship, it has just been released and has attracted a huge fan base already. Its normal it has overshadowed OPX which now is a mid-range budget phone. I think that after some months, they will put some effort on bringing a full working MM on OPX. And then , start working on OP4

I remember, when OnePlus were asked why they haveused an older chipset in OnePlus X , they said that it'll help the device to have more (unofficial) development support. I think they indirectly implied ,"OnePlus X users, we won't be updating your software since we have provided you with a chip set that is going to have a great amount of (unofficial) developer support. So, don't bother us by asking for updates and let us concentrate on our "Flagship killers" ".

I have to disagree with you here.
1. Picture quality is better on SulatanXDA roms. It can be subjective, but it seems so. Even my friend semi-pro photographers said so. I don't care about 4K recording/FPS much
2. There are no bugs.
3. I get 50 Mbit/s on LTE outside of the building. It differes depending on time of the day and location obviously.
Anyway I do recommend SultanXDA rom to anyone who is looking to replace buggy (yes it is buggy and never updated!!!) OOS. Love this phone.... The only thing I hate is lack of 5GHz band for wifi (it isn't even the band as the support is there, One+ was lazy enough not to put an antenna in)

Is it Possible to Flash Samsung's One UI on Oneplus 8 series without Unlocking Bootloader, like Color OS was Available few weeks back Officially.

Are you suggesting flashing Samsung Firmware onto a OnePlus device? Or are you asking if there's a skinned OnePlus ROM One UI? Color OS was available but it's built for OnePlus devices.

Frankly I think the chance of getting a Samsung OS port OnePlus is between 0-1%
I really don't understand why anyone would want it.

This will not happen on this device..
If it does it'll be broken, Samsung does not make it easy to port their stuff.
LG? I don't think they care anymore.
Motorola? Pretty sure they're owned by Google or were, so wouldn't imagine the leap being massive.
But the amount of services and crap you'd need to port one UI correctly, sorry but it's not happening.

Auto Rotation toggle doesn't do anything so keep it disabled.
Brightness goes from 50% at the minimum to 100% very quickly so You can only use 50,75,100% within 1mm of slider length.
Vibrations
FP Scanner
AOD brightness is always 100%
RIL
Samsung Cloud has problems with logging in.
Bixby probably would work but has to be updated. (Use APKMirror and try!)
Probably more stuff. Working on fixing all bugs.
Is it worth it? To me? No.

Why not just get a Samsung? Never quite understood why people buy a phone, then flash a Port on it. I mean if you want MIUI by a Xiaomi, if you want One UI buy a Samsung.

I agree mate, unless you're in the UK in which case you'd be getting the exynos chipset which is pretty crap.
Don't get me wrong is someone makes a fully functional or even semi functional ROM from any other device then yes it's great, I just know Samsung as I've had a few and their OS is just not for the faint of heart, even their watches were hard to port android to (older ones specifically)
But yea, if you want OneUi, there's only one real way to get it
