Glowlight Plus - Nook Touch General

Just go this device from a friend. Been reading through this thread, and a bit unsure how to tackle this device. All I really want to do is install apps (kindle, kobo, overdrive, etc)
In a perfect world I'd like root to uninstall bloat, and all to install or try norefresh module in xposed. But that's secondary. First and foremost, any just the ability to install and use apps that would be useful on an ereader.
I'm in canada, so anything to do with Nook, Barnes & Noble is unusable to me.
Model: BNRV510
Software version: 45.2.22_user/4.5.2.58
Any step by step with file links would be apprecitiated. No issues with rooting, tweaking phones, and I'm a little familiar with ADB, but definitely no expert with that software. I can get my own apks, but if u have functioning apks already, then great.
Maybe, in the spirit of Christmas, I can find a little of the giving Christmas spirit on xda? lol
Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

Hawki, I woudl suggest you have a look through the other Glowlight threads here (not many to choose from) but ultimately, start from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63552473&postcount=63
This is the easy way to get full rights and then you can decide on root or not.
Have fun

Root Q/A

Hey guys.
So, I just got my Magic and im frustrated that I cant dl apps from market that cost money. Sadly im living in scandinavia making it not possible for me to do so.
Now I've been reading about ROoting and trying to understand what it is and wich purpose it fullfiles.
I'd appriciate a link to a "General questions regarding rooting" or something similar so I can read up and maybe, just maybe root my device without bricking it.
I've searched but nothin, read the wiki about rooting but that just explained HOW to root and not which functions it brought with the device actually being rooted.
I'd appriciate some REAL infomation and not "lol nub go google" because I have and I havent found anything yet.
The help is appriciated and I will donate some money for those that make things clear to me

ok, misunderstandig there...
This thing with root, i think that is like with my ubuntu linux, when you login as root or superuser, you, as it stays here "has all rights or permissions (to all files and programs) in all modes", so it has it's advantage but can be dangerous when you do something stupid.
i'm not sure if it's the same for android, but it is linux under the hood after all.
Hope it helped a little bit.
I'm sure there were a few threads early on in the Dream forum about why people should bother rooting - the benefits and such. Might be worth a specific search in there for threads like Why should I bother rooting or what are the benefits of having root? etc.
Here's how I understand it -
Seems to me Root was more important on the Dream, because it meant you could do stuff like putting a different ROM on with extras like Soft Keyboard and Latitude, and also move stuff like caches to SD Card, and more recently, move apps themselves to SD Card. This was damned near essential, due to the much smaller space on the handset for apps etc (In my experience it was about 75MB after a wipe - tiny) and the fact that the Market Cache wasn't easily clearable. Without Root, you couldn't alter those annoying things even if you had the knowhow, because you were "locked out" of changing the main ROM. So Root allowed you the freedom to modify stuff.
Other things you can do if you have root include ADB push stuff, so you can alter small parts of the system folder to suit you - like adding languages or keyboards or modified boot images etc. You can do Nandroid back ups of your whole system including installed apps, so that you can restore the apps after a wipe, or backup a ROM that works so that you can go back to it if you load one that doesn't work. Also you can install custom themes to make your fone look less generic. I believe there are ways to get tethering to work (Using the modem/internet access on the device/fone to link up via bluetooth with a laptop or netbook and surf as if you have a USB Dongle.
Some of the reasons I rooted my G1 are mute now or don't apply to the Magic
eg - More space on the magic for apps so I don't need to make more room by putting caches on SD or moving apps to SD
Cupcake update has soft keyboard anyway, and latitude
Also we now seem to be able to clear the caches for most apps via the Apps Manager, so stuff like Market and Browser doesn't grow with use and get out of hand.
Home app replacements are far more stable and are great for having different themes so no need to alter the main themes using root.
So, I haven't rooted my Ion/Magic as yet. If and when theres a really stable ROM without gliches I might go for it, but no real need for me as of yet so not gonna mess. I'm sure other folks can give you more reasons to either go for root, or leave it as it is.

Success rooting Bravo

Rooted my Bravo today with SuperOneClick, worked like a charm, and appears to be permanent (after several reboots). This is my first smart phone, so it's all new to me, but so far, so good.
New to smartphones myself. I was heavy in motomodding years back but this is new game for me. I still have yet to find a good noob tutorial (step by step) for installing non-markets (in particular sirius-xm app). I have rooted with S1C, but now what? I know , that's what the search forum button is for. I've done that, but all I find are mid-level talk, and not idiot(me)speak. I'll keep watching for examples. Thanks.
Once I got the phone rooted, I was relying on the SideLoad Wonder Machine I found on another site (lets you install .apk files through a point-and-click interface), but it failed to install several apps. Then I found out how to do it using ADB from the command line and so far, everthing I've tried has installed with no problem. I'm only semi-geeky, and I can grok what I've had to thus far. I started out at the command line in DOS 3.3 back in 1988, so delving into this has not been too hard. Kinda fun, actually.
Tomorrow I'll post up step by step instructions on how I did it the noon way. You have to buy an app called Root Explorer that gives you access to write on system files
Thanks alot. I will say the SWM program has worked great so far for installing nonmarkets. Very easy to use. Now I just need to learn how to remove all the dead weight and I'll be happy. I will say that the Sirius-xm app is VERY CPU intensive, so multitasking is difficult. Hoping removing uneeded processes will relieve some of the strain.
I'd love to be able to get rid of some of the bloatware apps that came with this phone, if for no other reason than to make it more 'mine.' The stock browser, Latitude, Mobile Video, Media Share, Social Networking (ack!) all gotta go.
hi Scrondar, could you post some basic instructions and links to superoneclick? i just got a bravo and would like to root it.
I have rooted and enabled non market apps via super one click 1.5.5. To get rid of bloatware I downloaded bloat freezer from the market. It does not totally remove them from the phone but freezes them from running in the back ground or appearing in the app drawer. It's 1.99 in the market I had to email the dev because it forced closed when I opened it but he was awesome about getting me a working version. Worth every penny. I wanted to freeze it because it gives you the option to defrost if you want. I think I read somewhere if you delete the stock apps from the phone it keeps you from updating to 2.2 or any other version of android in the future (if one is ever released for this phone). Although I may be wrong about that.
Chagla- You can find the link to rooting instructions on this site, but in a nutshell, I downloaded and installed the Moto USB drivers on my Win7 64-bit desktop machine, enabled USB Debugging on the Bravo (Settings->Applications->Development->USB Debugging (checked), downloaded and ran One Click Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304), and that was it. Now, what I'd REALLY like to try is some custom ROMs on this phone, but as yet know of none that will safely work on it. Good luck!

Never got the chance to try it. By the time I was ready to try rooting, that app was no longer available on the Market, and then I found Super One-Click, which worked on my first attempt.

[Q] New Droid user

Hi guys.
I'm totally new to Android OS but finding it pretty amiable so far. Got a Flipout that's rooted and installed the CEE firmware after getting pissed off with MotoBlur. I know my way around the phone pretty well. Installed the Wireless Tether app too which, I was amazed to discover, works beautifully. After using WM6.5 for so long I'm used to stuff not working for no good reason so that was a bit refreshing.
What I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction for is...
1 - I'm rooted. Now what? What else can I do and why would I?
2 - My battery life sucks. Any apps I should be using to optimise this?
3 - I have SetCPU but tbh don't really know how to use it. Should I even bother?
A bit about my usage that might be relevant - I use Twitter and FB apps pretty frequently (update interval 30 mins+), have 3 email accounts (1 push 2 pull 30 mins interval). Hope this helps.
Cheers!
Essential Apps for new Droid User...
Hello Kaladan .
I too am new to the world of droids (well read regarding symbian hacks/mods). I am also a very quick learner. In the short time I have owned my Flipout (UK), I have learned that there are a few apps that are essential installations for rooted users.
1: "Titanium Backup" (paid if possible)...essential for nand backup (rom)..system backup, App installation & a whole host of other needed routines.
2: "BusyBox" standalone installation or install from within "Titanium Backup"
3: latest "Clockwork" recovery tools (search on here for more info on this).
4: Setcpu..? (no kernal modded for overclocking is available yet for the flipout so this fact alone makes installation of Setcpu questionable unless you want to underclock to save battery?).
5: Root Explorer..(very usefull for locating those elusive system files that we sometimes need to edit).
6: RSDlite..Stable, reliable & essential for full firmware rom flashing.
7: UniversalAndroot..(for future rooting projects)(renowned for stability & user friendliness).
I would consider all the above Apps to be essential as most of what you are gonna want to do on or with your Flipout will require the phone to be rooted & at least 1 or more of the listed Apps to be installed.
There is a whole world of Droid Apps at your disposal (Market & other sources) once your rooted & set up but we'll leave the fun of discovering some of them to you.
Hope this post has been of some help to you...
Stay Breezy & Be Lucky...
Peace...
Thanks dude, this is helpful.
I've managed to, er, procure Titanium Backup but it says I'm not rooted; havent' had time to mess on with it but I'll have a fiddle with it today. I actually used UniversalAndroot to root in the first place though.
Root Explorer and RSDlite I've got already too.
BusyBox seems to be a bit more complicated than I'd expected though, I'd seen some instructions somewhere about terminal emulators and Linux commands. I don't know much about that but I suppose I've gotta start somewhere
Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. TiBackup works and BB installed
Thanks again matey.

Due to the popular demand, and the questions in the last few days. The problem arise from people who were using verygreen version of root. The true is, his version of root works, but what very happens is that he decided to lock down some of the stuff, and thus making further mod become inconvenience for a lot of people. Many people don't know how to fix it. They do not know how to read and interpret the error message and fix it. In a way I think this maybe a better alternative since I believe people who looking to modify their Nook HD/HD+ or root them, what they very after at the minimum is the Google Play store and ability to install any apps they want. While this isn't gonna get you everything, it does most of what people are very after with very little fuss. The main purpose of this thread isn't to have everything working, because we are working around the limitation of what the Nook has, but rather stream line what we already have working and get it there quickly and painlessly from a scratch. So this is mainly to use after the system has been wipe/factory reset.
After I have made this post, I still got someone PM me said it doesn't work. While I'm sure that it does work, I want to be very confident about it. So, I decided to sacrifice my already good setup of my Nook HD+ and FULLY FACTORY RESET it then record this video. Let me make it clear, the file was download from the thread again, and not from my local copy. I'm baffled. I'm just not sure is there is anything easier way it can be done. Seriously just unzip and run 1 command and people still say it doesn't work. The responsibility to read the information is up to you. I don't have the capability to upload those information to your head. Since I already proved that this work, I'll not response to PM regarding this. If you have question or problem, post it on the thread.
Disclaimer:
If something gone wrong, it's all your fault. I take ZERO responsibility for what happen to your device, your life, your wife/husband, your kids, your unborn child and etc. You get the idea.
Breaking News:
It seem the latest update 2.0.5 actually break the root. So, be warned.
Preface:
I didn't discovered the original root on the Nook HD+, verygreen did Nor did I discover the ability to enable install of unknown source. Leapinlar thread has the history on that so I won't go there. But I have created some scripts to help gaining root, modify some critical setting, and adding GAPPS to the Nook HD/HD+, but they are all scattered. Leapinlar has a thread that help gather many of those information together here. Still people are still having trouble. As I stated, I believe what many people are after is just the ability to install any app they want. And this should get very close to their goal. While the end goal is probably something like a custom ROM, something like a CM10 that verygreen is developing; and I believe it will get there. It will probably take a bit more time for the installation process to be easy for people to follow. And there may be something that need to get fix when the very early beta come out. It's like in the Alpha if not pre-Alpha ATM.
While this will get a lot done for you, I still encourage people to go read the original mod threads, there maybe some useful information for you.
1. My original root thread.
2. My original GAPPS thread.
3. I encourage you to read the Nook HD+ Stock Root User Tips from LeapinLar thread, this is like a must read for anyone planning to root their Nook HD/HD+.
Pre-Requisite:
Working ADB that can see Nook HD/HD+ and the Nook HD/HD+ of course(that include enable ADB on the Nook also). If you need help getting drivers and ADB to see Nook, check out LeapinLar thread. ATM, Nook HD/HD+ have 3 firmwares version, 2.0.0, 2.0.2 and 2.0.4. When the get it online it will update automatically. So far all the mods we know of works on all 3. But this doesn't mean it will on future version. Again, LeapinLar thread will have that information as well.
Instruction:
Download these three files. allinone.zip GoogleMaps.apk and gapps-ics-system.zip
Unzip allinone.zip (don't unzip gapps-ics-system.zip)
run allinone.bat
after you got google play store, I suggest you to update it first, the run it at least once before installing Google Map by either copy it to Nook and use your favorite file manager to install or using the command
Code:
adb install GoogleMaps.apk
Post-Install: (or if you don't see the google apps)
The way apps installed via B&N store are different from other apps install via sideloading or any other app stores, and that include GAPPS as well. What this means is that all these apps won't show up on the stock Nook Launcher naturally. But other launcher will see them w/o any problem. That said, I recommend you pick another launcher from the google app store and use that instead. In order to see those extra apps from the Nook Launcher on the Apps screen, hold the volume up button while you press the "Apps" word at the top of the screen for 2-3 seconds. An "Extras" screen will pop up showing all of the sideloaded apps. Another thing is that the superuser app need one extra nudge. It need to be launch at least once manually before it start working. This only need to be done once.
IMO, while I could just point you to one of the launcher or even sideload it during the installation for you. I prefer not to do that. I very think the choice to choose one should be your own. Personal preference aside, I rather not point you to one because I don't know how safe is it to randomly point people to some random apk when it's not even the real purpose of this. I very prefer people get to the google play store on their own and get it from there. If you don't know one then ask around. Many people here have suggested ADW, Apex, Nova, Zeam. If you want to grab apk to sideload, then you can try androiddrawer, it look rather ok.
PRECAUTION:
All these mods you see the Nook HD & HD+ are workaround. They are not the holy grail. So, for example the superuser checker app won't recognize them. That doesn't mean you don't have root, you do but because it's not a traditional root thus they don't see them. A bigger concern is that because this is a workaround. And it's a workaround because we don't have full control of the Nook, any modification to the files or added files /system and its sub-directories (regardless of whether you do so manually or via app) will result in 8 boot loop followed by a full system wipe. Anything stored on the Nook internal storage will be gone. As such, we encourage you not to use such app. We know of at least SuperSU and many ad removal apps will create such event. For more information I strongly encourage you to read those threads I pointed to earlier.
Footnote:
Google Chrome browser is also not included, it's quite big and the latest version doesn't seem compatible(at least that's what I heard). And the voice search is also not working.

Well, if it works consistently enough there will be nothing for the layperson to get confused about. Only if it leads to troubleshooting would it maybe cause problems (because the person would have no idea what steps were taken).
I say if the process can be further automated, even if it's just (hopefully) a stopgap to more thorough root and ROMs down the road, then by Glob do it!

I'm not sure what further automated this thing could be, you only have to download few files, unzip and run ONE command to get all three things done; root+Manual OTA+GAPPS.

Ok, am I just messing this up big time or what? When I run the .bat it starts, then it says mkdir failed for /data/su, file exists. Then it tries to do every file saying "cannot stat "whatever" : No such file or directory." Over and over again. Major fail. I've rooted multiple android phones and tablets without these kinds of problems. Am I messing up something simple?

If you rooted once before it will give you that cannot mkdir error. You might erase and deregister using the B&N settings, then as soon as you reload and register, run the mod. Only once.

I've done that a few times, but I'll try again.
Thank you very much for this all-in-one. It's genius!
I've just installed it on my Dad's HD+, and it works like a charm. Damn, it's so amazing! One thing though, rookie question, and I guess I'm asking for too much, but would it be possible to redirect the "Apps" icon on the "desktop" to auto redirect to the Android app-drawer; where the Android apps are located - i.e. Play store? Sorry for the bother, and I understand I am asking for too much, so please ignore my message.
Again, thank you very much for your efforts. Works like a charm.
Did a full reset on my HD+. No longer shows the mkdir failed part, everything else still says no such file or directory.

I've tried it in the same area and out, although I'm not sure if both were fresh. I'm trying yet again here in the next few minutes. I will get this. I've only owned one android device that I didn't root, and the was the Samsung Intercept. If you've ever heard of that piece of crap, you'll know why I didn't bother.

Finally! I'd already had the gapps in the folder before but I guess the su file had already been created. A full wipe, followed by proper placement of the files finally worked! I would ask if it is sad to feel so good about such a simple achievement, but I don't care. It finally worked! Thanks to someone0 for the all-in-one and leapinlar for the advice.

I have an old Galaxy Grand Prime Sm-G530W running Android 5.1.1. It has 8gb storage and I would like to maybe remove some of the apps that I wont use, are not useful or are just bloatware.
However I am not sure what apps are what and which one I should avoid removing?
The phone will be used primary to make calls, will not be on a data and only use free wifi hotspot and the wife from my home.
I would like to maybe keep some kind of google maps ability, I do not want chrome but rather would use firefox along with ad blockers etc I know work well for me on FF.
I have have done some research but not a phone expert by far so I am not sure I want to root my phone, install custom roms. I read something about remove bloatware via "remove the pre installed apps using ADB commands" however figured I get some tips advice from people that know what they are talking about.
Ideally it would be great if there was some kind of program I can just plug into from my PC or some such that allows me to then simply remove the samsung and google bloat or unwanted programs so I could gain more room for apps I do want.
Right now after factory reset it uses like 3.50GB out of 8gb.
is there any Debloat program I can use on it out there?

Hello member of this small community, well the best way to remove bloatware is by root, the process is relatively simple.
1) Download the twrp recovery (.tar) belonging to the model you have.
2) Install it through Odin
3) Install Magisk Manager
With this done you can use applications such as root uninstaller, another alternative is to look if there is a custom rom for your model, but do not expect much as many roms have been abandoned and only a new project is kept alive, if the current rom does not present problems in performance, I recommend you leave it alone and start removing junk apps, another recommendation is to install SD maid, a great app for cleaning junk content of the phone.
