S4 charging very slowly - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I have an S4 that suddenly began charging very very slowly. I looked in settings and I found out that it thinks it is charging from USB, even if I charge it from AC. I have tried a lot of chargers and outlets and it behaves the same. What should I do?
Thank you!

Make sure the chargers you have used are 2A chargers.
If it's not the charger, or cable, then the only other suggestion would be to do a factory reset.

Yes, they are. I've done that. Even when it is turned off, it still charges very slowly.

Try cleaning the charging port. But be careful to not damage it.

Then change the port completely.
You've tried everything and nothing worked. So it's most probably defective.

I've done that and same result.

Time to change it

How about trying another battery?

Have not had this problem myself. Try another USB charger? Just about anything that's 500mA will work (albeit not nearly as fast as the 2.0 amp charger that came with your phone).
I suspect your charger.

It was the cable. I really didn't suspect it would be that since I have barely used it and I've only had it for two weeks. Thanks!

Good to hear it was a simple solution. You might check with the place you purchased it from to see if they will provide a new cable. I guess we can just be glad you didn't find out about the cable during the middle of an Odin flash...

No kidding. That would hurt a little
I am now having this problem after my phone got wet. No AC or DC chargers will work but the phone will always charge from a computer or even the USB interface of a car.
Even if I can get an AC or DC charger to be recognized, the phone will show as charging but the battery will continue to decline.
It is making no sense to me though I assume getting the phone wet partially fried something.
Yeah the voltage is increased to charge you battery when on AC power, at the kernel level. USB voltage is lower. So i'd say surely fried, and will no doubt stop working sooner or later.
I know that on my s2 I had an issue where it would say its charging and when I woke up in the morning no charge at all. The pin/row of pins or bar if you will would bend down and not make good contact. I used a tooth pick to pry up on it every time it did that.

Thanks. I didn't realize that the charging port was removable on the S4 so I swapped that out and all is fine now. :good:
Ummm... No its not the voltage. It is the ID pin. The voltage stays the same. The only actual difference is the milliamp mAH output of the charger. A normal USB plug has 500mA our charger has 2000. How the phone tells the difference? The 2 data pins inside he charger are shorted together. The voltage always stays the same.

Not Charging, USB Port Has Burning Smell

I was charging my N4 by USB, plugging it into my wall outlet. It had already risen for 3% to 11% when suddenly, it stopped charging. I tried to plug and replug everything and used a different outlet, but I got no positive results. Then, I found that if I bent up the USB cable, the phone would start charging. Eventually, this became an infeasible solution, and now, my N4 has completely shut off. Upon further inspection, the USB port smells like something burning. What's going on? I'm not sure if this is caused by a faulty port of if there was some water damage. Some water flailed on the top of the phone lightly earlier but I'm not sure if some dripped into the port. Earlier today, I was having issues with the connection to charge but a simple unplug and replug fixed everything.
I'm not sure if all these events are coincidences or if one of them is the reason behind why it isn't charging now. Why does the port smell like it's burning? How do I get it to charge again?
EDIT: Not sure if it's the port or the cable that burned out.
EDIT 2: I just go a single red flash. What does this mean!?!?!?

setting aside the burning smell or water that dripped on the phone, have you tried other cable? i also experienced the same issue in charging. it turns out, the cable that came with the box was already faulty, after 4-5 months.
also double check if the usb port is really burned or something. might as well send it to a service center, either in warranty or not, just to be safe

Fast Charging problem!

Hello
Since a couple of days I noticed something weird with the included fast charger.
Sometimes when I plug it in the phones says 4h+ to be fully charged then I just unplug the USB cable and put it back in and it says 1h10min to be fully charged
Sometimes i even have to unplug it 2 times to get the fastest charge speed..
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong??
I'm rooted with arter97 kernel

It happen to me too, and im on stock. I do the same thing you do in order to get the fast charging.... is not the end of the world but is a little annoying.
Try using a different cable. I read somewhere that there was some issue with the included fast charger which turned out to be a bad cable.
I haven't noticed this as an issue yet however I never use the included USB Cable (could hurt resale value if accessories are beaten up)
Picked up a pile of very nice and thin Red USB Micro cables from eBay a few years back, they have lasted a few phones and still look brand new, cost maybe a couple of quid if that.
Okay I'll try changing out the cable, will see if it makes any difference

Get a new Micro USB cable from Amazon. They retail at around 5-6 bux and they are mostly 20AWG cables which should be much better than an old cable utilizing the Rapid Charging.

I would say thicker the better for charging. So, I would say smaller the better if you're going for a non OEM cable for charging . There are other factors too. Read this for more info.
Are you sure the problem is cable not adapter?

fast-charging failure

My device is mate8 which has a problem for charger is not working with fast charging and take a 3 hours to be full than before which was charging in 2 hours.
I know that it charges fast-charging by its original cable
I took twice it to the insurance company to solve this problem and they couldn't fix it and the cable was giving a fast-charging sign
And I checked that problem by this app from in PLAY STORE its called "AMPERE" it was showing 2600 amps for fast charging and now it gives from 1700 and lower than that sometimes
I need to find a solution for this problem
Do you happen to know how thick the cable is? Try a charge only cable that's 20 or 18 AWG and preferably less than 6ft in length.

Try charge it with phone powered off. If that doesn't work then maybe your battery is showing age. By the way, LiPo battery charges very slowly during the last few percent, so just keep that in mind.

Anyone found an external battery charger that works?

I have a couple of spare batteries for my V20, but can't find an external battery charger that works. I've bought a couple that claim to be able to charge V20 batteries, but neither of them do.
Does anyone know of the charger that can be purchased in the UK which actually works?

The first one looks like one that I already have (and doesn't work). I haven't come across the 2nd one.
So have you tried them, or are you still waiting for them to be delivered?
Like I say i have them both, they both work fine. The second one charges faster than the first but I like the small form factor of the first one linked, it's very good for travel.
I'm using the LG OEM external charger in the US. It works great. It was sold only as a package including a new battery. I would be surprised if LG didn't make a version for the UK market. If they do, I would recommend it.

Hmmm....odd that the first one doesn't work for me. There is a voltage from the pins on the charger but the neither of my batteries charges when I insert them (and I have even left them overnight).
I've ordered the 2nd one to see if it's any better.
LG did have the BCK-5200 charging kit for the V20, but it seems to be discontinued. It's certainly unavailable in the UK.

So I received this charger this morning, and left a battery charging in it for 3 hours. The LED on the charger changed from blue to pink, but the battery didn't charge at all. I checked the pins with a multitester and the charger was delivering current, but the battery charge wasn't increasing.
Any ideas??

What, all 4 of them? (I have tried charging 2 batteries in the new charger, and all 4 batteries in the other 2 chargers that I have bought and tried). None of the batteries have charged in any of the chargers.
All of them charge fine in the phone.
I've had the external battery charger from the first link for three years. Pretty much since the phone came out. It is always work for OEM and aftermarket batteries for me.

Yes I also have that charger - it doesn't charge any of the batteries that I've tried with it (only 3 of my 4 batteries will physically fit into it, and none of them will charge).
I really can't work this out - how come these chargers work for others but not for me? Surely all 4 of my batteries can't be faulty, particularly when all 4 charge perfectly well when they are in the phone.

The light is blue when it is not charging. And red when it is charging. You could try to check the voltage if you have a meter. Or it might be a faulty charger. Just to guess.

I've tried two power sources - one is 5V 2A, the other is 5V 2.4A.
Is it possible that the batteries are actually being charged, but that the phone isn't reporting the correct level of charge when the batteries are inserted?
