I just got a replacement V20 from T-Mobile because my old one was having huge noise reduction problems with the camera. The replacement has a lot less noise reduction, but it also has another problem.
The second screen on my old phone, when it's acting as an AOD, will properly adjust to ambient brightness (and even follow the brightness adjustments from Lux). The new phone, however, will keep the AOD at the same brightness level as when it was on, but only for a few seconds. After that, it goes to full brightness. If I put my hand about an inch over the light sensor (so I don't turn off the AOD), it'll go dim. It seems to have only two levels: 0% and 100%. It doesn't go anywhere in between.
Using Lux, system auto, manual brightness, whatever, has no effect: the second screen still will go full bright or full dark, depending on how bright the room is. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there maybe a fix? It's driving me crazy.
Yep. My LG V20 second screen adjst the brightness too. In dark place , the brightness go down.

I don't think you understood. The issue isn't that it adjusts; I'd expect it to do that. The issue is that it's only ever off, at 0% brightness or at 100% brightness.

You say that you're using Lux, but what sounds like an issue to me is that you also say that you've tried the stock auto brightness and the screen still doesn't work right. Mine (ATT version) works with both stock auto and with Lux.
I'm wondering if something is wrong with the phone?
Try these settings in Lux though. Mine is working with Lux, so maybe duplicating my settings will at least be a start.

Let me know if these help.
Otherwise, something else is going on like maybe another app is somehow interfering or (worse case) the sensor on the phone is broken.
EDIT
Oh and the second screen brightness with Lux and the system's auto brightness both depend on the actual screen brightness settings for that light level. So in Lux, if your bedroom light brings the main screen to 50% brightness, then when the main screen is off, the second screen will set to 50% as well.
I also forgot to mention that Lux is set to. Adjust Dynamicaly and using the Smart profile (this is in the notification drawer pull down)

Thank you for the help, but it's just barely too late. The phone decided that it was going to behave all of a sudden, with no action from me.
May I know how to get into lux settings?

When I unlock the the screen, there is a few second delay in the screen resuming to the set brightens.

Anyone have this or have I got a setting wrong some where?

Well it is set to auto mode, I guess it is normal to take a moment to measure the ambient light and set a determined brightness.
Ya good catch. My note 4 does this every once in a while too. My note 3 or note 2 never did that and it had auto settings too?

Yeah mines still doing it. Might be fixed with an update. Doubt it though.
Edit: it's the infrared proximity sensor... Never been so disappointed...
I have a 4G model, europe, xt1039, running stock 4.4.4, and I noticed something while chatting on hangouts in the dark: there is a red led to the right of our speaker!!!
What is weird is that it doesn't light up unless I am in a hangouts conversation (not conversation list or the app, you need to enter a conversation).
Can someone else try and confirm? Note, it is very dim, make sure you are in complete darkness and brightness is minimum.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Go in a dark, black room and set brightness to minimum.
2. Go in hangouts and open a conversation, a red dim light should show up to the right of the speaker (the other side from the led light)
Edit, got pictures. (But it's actually dimmer than in the pictures)

I believe that's the proximity sensor. Used to sense when you put the phone to your ear so the phone can turn the screen off. Why you are seeing it - I don't know - it's infrared.

To what i've seen about this, this is the proximity sensor that is on (I head previously seen it when using AcDisplay and its active mode that uses proximity sensor to wake the screen)
To reproduce screen off: use AcDisplay and enable active mode
Yep I see it on mine too - nothing to worry about

This is mostly infra red, but in our case there are some deep red leaking too, that we can (hardly) see
Oh, it goes on in CPU Z too, but why is it there in hangouts?

hangouts allows you to make voip calls, so of course it uses the sensor
don't know if it's normal for it to be active in a SMS/message.

Don't compare apples to oranges.
Mine is Moto G 4G. I can see it too. As for Samsung I don't know, nor do I like their phones.
When I'm in a light room the screen goes brighter but if I walk into a darker room, the screen doesn't dim unless I lock and then unlock the screen.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Yep got the same here. Thought I had a faulty ambient light sensor but obviously not.

Just tried it by covering the light sensor to make sure, no problem here (G935F). My only concern related to brightness is that the s7 just has auto brightness, but no adaptive brightness.
Uncheck the auto box and recheck. Then don't touch the slider. It's usually because in marshmallow the slider moves with the auto bright and most people touch it which makes it hold position.

There seems to be a bug somewhere still. I just tried to move the slider while auto brightness is ticked and to cover the light sensor afterwards again and it still worked and to my surprise it even took into account that I lowered the brightness and took also a lower brightness at the covered state and took my initial setting after uncovering, pretty nice, so there is indeed still adaptive brightness. After ticking und unticking auto it went back taking the default steps for brightness as before.
Having the same issue here
Definately not touched the slider.
Also, I have tested the light sensor and it appears to work fine so definately a software issue. Though I imagine we will see some software updates to fix bugs shortly after the official release date.
So you can adjust the slider with the box checked and get various levels of auto? Does it learn?

Yes.
I can't tell for sure, when I change further steps the previous seems to stick, at least to some extend so there is a logic behind it, but I can't tell for sure if it really is based on each step and sets it accordingly or if it's just changes the range it operates in. Anyways I'm a happy camper.
Also, I could reproduce the device not changing the brightness, when I put it to full at darkness it won't move anymore in auto. But as soon as I lower it again it will also change accordingly again, maybe at those with the stuck brightness the min brightness is only raised, but not lowered anymore, but just an assumption and doesn't help anyone atm unfortunately.

This is the first Galaxy phone I had, that Auto brightness actually works the way I like it.
It seems to be working fine now. It just takes a few seconds for the screen to dim (maybe I was being impatient).
After testing it further it's actually really good auto brightness.
It works, just takes some time to adjust to the lighting. Maybe the default settings are set to a certain time. Maybe with root we can adjust this..

It seems to only do it quickly when the device is lay down (as 954wrecker said). Maybe Samsung did that so it doesn't annoy you when using your phone.
this is definitely a bug imo... the auto brightness doesn't change for me either...

I also have an auto briteness issue, when I disable AutoBrite and set it manually about half my apps override the setting and enable AutoBriteness in the app's screen usually dimming the screen? SpadesFree one example and I do not see an override in the app.
Confimed that I'm having same issue, auto brightness not adjusting and slider not movingoing. Have to move it manually
Same issue. It needs to be fixed manually by editing services.jar (root needed)
Nothing else will work. None of google play apps will help with that issue. Does not matter what you do, it will always dimming if you don't fix it in framework.jar

I'm on Android Nougat 7.0 stock with TWRP and root. The auto brightness goes too low when in a low lit room. Previous versions of Android adapted as I would increase the brightness and eventually learn how I liked it in differently lit rooms. However, Android 7 doesn't appear to be doing this.
Is there an app or mod that would allow me to adjust the auto brightness settings?

Adaptive display is to adjust the colours not the brightness.
Turning off auto brightness would mean adjusting the brightness everytime I went into a different light environment. That would defeat the object.
Not very helpful but thanks for trying.

you could always turn off auto brightness and try and find a middle of the road setting, but I know what you mean, when playing games on mine the screen seems to go darker in darker rooms, seems the wrong way around to me, I just move my hand away from any sensors and it sorts itself out, the 2 dots next to the top speaker.

Well on Android 6 I would manually adjust it when it was too dark or too bright and Android would remember and adjust it to how I liked it, meaning I didn't have to manually adjust it anymore. Android 7 doesn't seem to have it. I guess I'll just put up with manually adjusting it for now.
Lux. It would set how dim or how bright the screen would be in a certain level of ambient light.

OK, thanks for the answers, Guys. Than it will be patched soon I think.

Bye
Maybe it will be fixed in the next update.
Not good for me either. Wish they had kept it how stock android works. I prefer being able to set a "bias" of dim, middle, or bright screen that adapts to any condition.
This is happening to me too. Need to toggle the auto brightness off and then on again to make it work. Pretty annoying.
Frustrating issue. Brightness suddenly jumps to too low in dark environments.
Always when I unlock my op5 outside the screen is black and it needs to adjust the brightness again for me to even see something. I hope they fix this too.
