So I am looking to root my Moto X Pure edition that is running 6.0 Marshmallow. I had the previous Moto X and only needed to unlock the bootloader, flash twrp, and then flash supersu. It would be awesome if someone who has previously done this could answer for me.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Perhaps you should look at the half dozen threads in the general area titled "how to root the Moto X" or something similar and they would be of help, like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/general/guide-how-to-root-pure-style-t3503958
Thanks so much!

I really appreciate the help, and I have a question about the petition attached to your reply. What exactly is your goal? I thought the Moto X Pure Edition was confirmed to get Nougat.
I'd be glad to sign it when I find out what it's for.
Thanks again,
Matt

Just because the MXPE is my daily driver device doesn't mean I don't own other Moto devices, and other devices period... I actually own and use a Moto X Pure Edition, Moto G 2015, Lumia 640 LTE, iPhone 5s, and have a drawer collection full of other miscellaneous or retired devices... I advocate for all devices where it seems relative, and if you think the Moto will only do this to the G, you are mistaken... they have shown a continual disrespect for devices over 6 months of age, read the article noted under the petition link in my sig.
BTW, although we are supposed to get Nougat on the X, I seriously have my doubts it will happen... I will believe it when I see it and personally believe it barely has a 50/50 shot at actually happening.
Alright I guess I'll sign the petition.
Thanks again for your help.

Check the twrp recovery install video it should have the root in it. Once the bootloader is unlocked just install twrp then flash supersu.zip in recovery to get root. It's pretty easy.

So what if you want to move from 4.4 to 4.4.2 from an ATT, rooted, non Dev, non custom recovery moto x? I was under the impression using this boot loader unlock method only worked for Dev editions..

You are correct. Bootloader unlock method only works for Dev Editions, and phones from T-Mobile, Sprint and other carriers where Moto gives out bootloader unlock codes. If you have an ATT or Verizon retail or Moto Maker X, and were not lucky enough to buy an unlock code from the Chinese seller (before it got shut down), you can not unlock your bootloader and use TWRP to root.
If you have a LOCKED (and not unlockable) bootloader, like ATT/Verizon, and you are on rooted 4.4 using SlapMyMoto and disabled write protection by using MotoWpNoMo, taking the 4.4.2 OTA update will revert the effects of MotoWpNoMo, patch the exploit used, and write protection will become re-enabled. You will likely keep root, but with write protection enabled, any changes you make to /system or the other protected folders will be lost at power off/on, making root less useful. Since 4.4.2 also patches the exploit used to gain root, if you hadn't rooted before taking 4.4.2, you wont be able to root it once its on your phone.
HOWEVER... If you are rooted & write protection disabled with 4.4, you could consider using SafeStrap with 4.4.2. I don't know how well it works (I have a Dev Edition, so I haven't tried it), but it is an option for using 4.4.2

i sent punit soni an email asking about the warranty policy on the pure edition.
"you guys are advertising unlockable bootloader on the 'pure edition'. a lot of us on the moto forums, and even more on droid life and android central are wanting to know if unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty.
motocare is giving us both yes and no answers depending on who we talk to. please get us some info on this soon. pre-orders start tomorrow and this is very important to a lot of early adopters. "
"We will honor warranty even if you unlock. Wait for official post on this."

Man, this is great news! Moto is doing good things. But the battery of the phone got me concerned. After reading about this though, I think I can look past the battery. This surely helps us hackers
Great news! So it means its fine to root on the first day (if rooting method is available) ?

for SuperSU, can't we download it from the Play Store and it can install or something? I need root. I need xposed and the Nlpwakelock module that can reduce the amount of wakelocks from Play Services, which can help the battery of this phone :good:
I mean to say was will we still get the latest firmware upgrade even when the phone is rooted ? f so then thats wonderful.

I assume if all you do is root the stock ROM, you can just unroot (completely remove SuperSU) and you'll be able to get the firmware upgrades again. if there is one single change in the /system, then firmware upgrades do not work. but by restoring it to how it's suppose to be, then the update will see no files changed and continue with the upgrade. that's how it worked with the Nexus phones, and the Moto X Pure Edition is essentially a Nexus phone with tweaks

I don't believe it until I read it in the fine print. I don't plan to unlock root my Moto G or X, but if I go to the bootloader unlock page it have to not mention anything about voiding your warranty in the process.

Excellent! I was a little concerned price wise that we'd be looking at another $100 tacked on to the $499 to get a 'Developer Edition' with an unlockable bootloader and warranty.

me too. and add on to that no option to customize.
So I was poking around on the Moto site because I'm about to unlock my bootloader. Motorola seems to have the Pure Edition listed as a dev edition, at least according to the page where you can download the factory images.

So this is for pure edition only, not the phone one might buy in a store, like myself?

Oh the Droid Maxx 2 is listed as an XT1565 I believe.
I did some searching and I think I found the same post as you. I would honestly try to get an unlock code the normal way from Motorola and see if its actually able to be unlocked, you may be surprised. If you get the code, you can try flashing the TWRP recovery we have for the Lux phones.
If you're brave enough anyway. If that worked, I'd attempt a nandroid backup for safety then try flashing some roms or just rooting it.
If I had the phone personally, I'd probably attempt it. Hopefully you can get the original firmware though, but you may be able to convert it to an XT1563 single sim.
I'm in the same situation, I got Moto X Play from Open Mobile. The same happened with my last phone, a GS 4 mini I had with Open as well so yea, though luck with our LRA version phones :S.
Could any of you guys post a link to that chinese site? At least having a copy of the original ROM helps.
I have the stock firmware 5.1.1 I will upload it to mega for others to download faster. It took me 7 hours to download that file from the Chinese site. Uploading to mega. I'll post here when finished.

Yes I unlocked the bootloader flashed TWRP then flashed crDroid ROM all good. Today I restored with the stock file linked, all good. I'm working on an updated tool auto batch/exe of my last tool for the Moto X 2014 to automate the process for Moto X Play 2015.

There's only one way of finding out by flashing a Rom, I would suggest starting with Tesla Rom as it has multiple setting under data for both GSM and CDMA.

Well if you're on verizon, you'll be waiting awhile but always be cautious, moto phones are prone to hard bricks when flashing bootloaders, more than a few dozen folks hard brick the original moto x from 2013.

I hear you on being cautious. And for MM, this phone isn't supported by Verizon, when I logged in to it, Google thought is was Maxx 2 and so does my Verizon account, but it is a Play for sure. So weird.

What version of TWRP did you flash? I'm having trouble getting it to be permanent. That said, I also tried to flash crDroid as well as a number of other ROMs and there was an error and none of them flashed properly.
Has someone tried this yet? I don't get how they expect us to flash a custom rom without an unlocked bootloader. Don't remember my old acc info so it won't let me post the link: autoomobile dot com/news/motorola-droid-turbo-2-joins-marshmallow-party/40025169
Meh, this looks like one of those fake articles. We don't even have root yet so how are we supposed to update our phones without an OTA?
That site especially has no clue. They post lots of nonsense for click views for advertising. At the least they often state wrong specs, like RAM, resolution. They aren't professional tech writers. It's a website designed to entice viewers, so they get money from advertising.
If you post a comment below the "article" pointing out they are full of crap, it helps their advertising statistics even more because you're are on the site longer!
I just read the article. They constantly confuse Droid Turbo and Droid Turbo 2. They don't seem to know the difference.

CWM isn't available for either Quark (Droid Turbo) or Kinzie (Droid Turbo 2). Only TWRP is available for the Quark and Kinzie with unlocked bootloaders. While the Moto X Force (Kinzie) has unlocked bootloader, the Droid Turbo 2 (Kinzie) does not have an unlocked bootloader. They are full of crap.

You are so far from home that it makes me sick. How does one even make this mistake? Its like the user base here at XDA has all together lost 40 IQ points since 2010. Do you all need to be spoon fed help? If you can't even figure out that you are in the wrong forum then I will be surprised if you successfully install TWRP. This isn't even anger either, I am genuinely confused how you can google "Droid 2 XDA" or "Droid Turbo 2 root" or any other combo of words, go to the "Droid 2 XDA", ignore the large picture of the slideout phone that looks nothing like your phone, go to the General section, ask a question, and while typing out the question never come to the realization that you are in the wrong part of XDA.
