Does installing the UK firmware to the US variant (E5803) require root? - Xperia Z5 Compact General

Hello. My local store has a really good deal on the US variant (E5803) of the Z5 Compact. I've had on my eye on this phone but wanted the international version because I want fingerprint sensor.
I was told I can install the UK firmware to the US variant to get fingerprint sensor to work.
Does this require rooting the phone? The reason I ask is I use Good for Enterprise (for work) and it will not install if the phone is rooted.
Also, does anyone have a good how-to with how to get the latest/most stable UK firmware installed on the Z5C? First time trying anything like this so I'd appreciate some guidance.

Doesn't need root, just use flashtool and xperiafirm to download and flash the firmware - doesn't void the warrenty either

Awesome. Thanks. Is it really that simple or are there some other steps I have to do? If I muck something up are there ways to recover or am I SOL?

It's legit that simple, and usually if you screw something up you can always recover.
You can even flash a E5823 firmware onto your E5803 and it will still work exactly the same (Both Z5 Compact models offer the exact same software / hardware basically)
Download flashtool
Install flashtool
Go into C:\Flashtool\drivers and install fastboot, flashmode and Z5 Compact drivers
Open flashtool and click on xperiafirm (right hand side of the tool bar (circle icon)
Download your the firmware for your phone
After download is complete, in flashtool click flash (lighting icon) - flashmode - select the firmware you just downloaded and under the wipe section wipe userdata
And that's it, now your E5803 is now UK version, or whatever other one you downloaded

Awesome! Thank you so much. If everything works as I expect I'll have to kiss you in appreciation.
Now I just need to find a good case with built-in QI charging and I'll be set.

Hey, when I followed these steps to the new UK version ( 32.2.A.0.305 R13c) the fingerprint works, but it can't detect my sim card and the NFC goes bonkers. What version of the firmware do you use?

Okay easy fix for that.
Find your firmware (your first one, not UK) and tick all the boxes under exclude except for MODEM or BASEBAND

First one not UK? I was having the same issue when I used the Generic UK firmware. If I tick all those boxes will it work?

so your original firmware, what you are essentially doing is only flashing your network settings (3g etc)

I am still confused. I am flashing the Customized UK version on the phone. Where does the original firmware come into play?

Never mind folks. While playing with the phone I realized I am beyond disappointed in the camera picture quality. I'm returning it. I think I'm gonna get a Samsung Galaxy S7.

This did not work for me. I first flashed the UK version to get to its broken state with the SIM card. Then I flashed the US version ticking everything except MODEM, but it didn't work. The AUS version of the firmware worked though

Basically you flashed the UK firmware, but in order to fix the issues you have you need to flash your original US firmware, which you can also download via xperifirm tool. But from US firmware only flash MODEM and BASEBAND parts. So you have a mixed firmware.
(haven't tried this myself, just rephrasing what has been said earlier)

Will I lose camera quality if I flash other country fw?

JM1 - official UK I9000 firmware upgrade from non-stock FW/after ODIN flash

Looking through the forums it seems that many people cannot upgrade the firmware on the SGS after flashing with ODIN/using a firmware from samsung-firmware.com
Hence my questions:
1. Has anyone been able to upgrade to the new offical firmware JM1 after having flashed the phone with ODIN?
2. If so, which firmware were you running before the Flash, in particular which CODE, CSC and MODEM?
3. Which country have you been able to upgrade from?
4. Which country did you buy the phone in?
5. Is your phone rooted?
6. Do you have a branded or unbranded phone and 8 or 16GB?
7. If you could not upgrade, which error did you get?
Hopefully we can find some answer and discover where the problem that people cannot upgrade originates
In my case:
1. I have not
2. JF3 from Samsung Firmwares
3. Tried from South Africa - failure
4. Germany
5. Yes
6. Unbranded 8GB
7. This version cannot be updated
I have a few suspicions:
1. Cannot upgrade at all after using odin
2. I9000XXJF3 for download is not the same as stock
3. The location where you connect from matters/only UK (and some others) can upgrade
4. You can only upgrade UK phones with UK firmware (different origin identified through IMEI)
I suspect its Geotaged someway as I managed to flash after I reflashed back to stock via odin in the UK.
Just to keep a running record and encourage other replies;
My O2 8GB version did not allow this, but may have to try again if others have really had success!
I am in the UK
It is an unlocked UK handset - though original fw-CSC code is linked to O2 rather than generic
Kies was installed as a 'UK' user
I tried with stock JF1 fw that came on the phone (though had rooted to enable a backup first) - nothing via Kies
I then flashed XXJF3 downloaded from Samsung-fw via Odin (OXA CSC file), but still no luck with Kies update

Is your handset Voda UK? So 16GB? That is one difference if so, though I would hope not really of significance. What fw were you on before flashing to XXJF3 - the stock Voda or other, also applied over Odin? Did you download the file from Samsung-firmwares, or source it elsewhere?

My phone came from Vodaphone 16gb Unlocked near enough day of release FW JF3 and CSC XAJF3.
I had rooted it, but wanted to unroot it so I downloaded the JF3 from samsung firmware but since the Froyo build was out I tried that didnt like it (to unstable) so flashed back to JF3 using the XA csc file

Thanks - one thought I've just had - I would have been on existing partition when using JF1 and when flashing to JF3 (believe this is 513.pit?) When I gave up and moved on with other Odin files (currently JG5) I changed to 512.pit, as required. You must have done the same to go to Froyo.
Question is, did you then re-partition back with 513 PIT file when flashing XXJF3 or did you leave it? I wonder if a 512 partition on the JF3 fw makes any difference to Kies.

I used 513 and repartition to go back to JF3 and upgrade did not work...
To be honest I didnt click repartition on odin, that may have accounted for my bad experiance with Froyo.
What if its a hidden partition thats getting erased?
I managed to finally update the firmware from a non-stock JF3 rooted firmware, on a German phone with UK firmware, in South Africa!!!
I tried all kinds of things and could not get KIES to update to the new firmware, no matter what firmware etc I used. Here is what finally worked for me :
- Flash with JF3 from Samsung-firmwares if you are not running this already, does not matter if rooted.
- Start KIES without connecting the phone, open firmware upgrade and hold keys ctrl+alt+u+p to get it to go into test mode
- Connect the phone and viola, you can upgrade!
Note, this does not seem to work on the newest KIES version. I tried this on both my netbook (old KIES) and my pc (newest KIES) and only the old version worked. I am ugrading as I type.
Note this may not work on branded phones. I own an unlocked SGS
I tried but i didn t manage to update, after turning on test mode, nothing changed...
same problem here
make sure you are running a firmware older than jm1, or try jf3

When you say old kies... do you mean 1.5.0 or one of the 1.5.1 varients preceeding 74_2 (which I believe to be the latest!) ?

Also make sure youre phone is running JF3 with the XA file (not SWC)
I got the same problem as you lot.
1. No, I flashed to JG5 via ODIN
2. I was running the stock Vodafone JF3
3. Can't upgrade
4. UK
5. Yes it is rooted
6. It was 16GB version from Vodafone but no Vodafone branded stuff
7. This version could not be updated
Right... have done as you suggested, using the kies version and JF3 and the correct csc... but am having no joy... did you use the 513 pit file as I've tested using 512 and as I say with no joy... S Also in the 'old' version of Kies, when one pushes ctrl alt u and p it doesn't tell me it's in test mode as it did with the latest two versions.

I installed 1.5.0.10052_28 last night but had no access to the 'test mode' - this under Win 7 x64. The key combo brings this up in all later Kies versions I have been through, both on Win7 x64 and XP x86, but not this particular one.
Can you clarify some points to help narrow down variables?
Which O/S did you succeed under? And x64 or x32?
You had a previous Kies version on, or was this a completely fresh install on a machine that had never seen Kies before?
Obviously this needs to be done whilst offering sacrifice and doing the ritualistic Kies dance, so which leg were you hopping on and was she blonde or brunette?

Glad it's not just me then
1. Never used Odin, or ever installed a different firmware. I was successful in upgrading through Kies.
2. Stock UK firmware from June 2010
3. England - UK
4. England (Sim Free/Unlocked)
5. No
6. Unbranded 8GB
7. When upgrading, I got several errors the main one was "Unable to go into download mode". I recovered the phone and flashed straight to the new JM1 through Kies.

What is debrand? i thought it was called rooting. I need the easiest and something that wont mes up my phone. easy meaning i can understand each step because i dont know some of the stuff that i have to do. cause in the youtube videos it was confusing
Id suggest you to install pc companion on the main sony ericsson site and update from there it is the safest way!
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
debrand is basically leaving the phone like if it's factory reset and if it just came out from the factory
worths cause you won't wait that much for any update as if you were using a branded fw
take a look to this http://www.youtube.com/user/bluechipj
will help you to install the newest fw
remember debranding the phone will wipe all the data so make sure you make a backup 1st

It's pretty straightforward.
- Install Sony Ericsson Update Service: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup.../detailed/updateservice/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en
- Install Sony Ericsson PC Companion: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/softwaredownloads/detailed/pccompanion/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en
[required since they install drivers on your computer]
- Download and extract the graphical flash tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10738467
- Download the X10a generic firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10738467 (2.1.A.0.435)
Flash.
Watch the videos for step by step.
Rooting = enabling programs to access the system (e.g. Titanium Backup, Barnacle WiFi Tether, etc.)
Debranding = removing carrier logo, apps, disabled options (2G, Unknown Sources, etc.)
Unlocking = use other carrier's SIMs
All three are separate, independent, and optional.

I have a question on this last step
IMPORTANT:
- You should always wipe userdata if you switch between Android versions (1.6 <-> 2.1). If not your phone will keep restarting all the time. This is the same for some providerbrandings even if you flash between same Android versions. So if you have this restarting problem, flash again with Wipe Userdata. If you don't want to loose your apps you have to backup them with Titanium or some other backup tool!
What does that mean or what do i have to do?
And also if i mess up does it mess up my phone?

[Q] Can't flash, Cant root !

Hello, i have an Xperia Play 2.3.3/3.0.1.A.0.145 Clean Bootloader locked version.
And i want to root it with this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090
(And the unlocking bootloader way is not an option because i had a lot of problems with it and i can't flash anything with it)
anyway, the problem is when i plug my phone and the flashtool asks me what device i choose X10 (the first option)
then i choose the FW and select all the files and cleck flash.
and i fallow the instructions by unplugging my phone and hold the back button and plug it again.
So far so good, but when the flashing begins and start with the first file, this massage appears:
13/013/2011 05:13:49 - ERROR - Error flashing. Aborted
13/013/2011 05:13:49 - INFO - Now unplug the device and power it on
13/013/2011 05:13:49 - INFO - Then go to application settings
13/013/2011 05:13:49 - INFO - turn on Unknown Sources and Debugging
And yes i did what the massage told me to do.
and i tried to flash so many times with no good.
so please help me or tell me what i'm doing wrong.
Are you using the beta version of flashtool? (think it's 2.9.1). It's the only one supporting the play. The reason I ask is I don't choose any phone when flashing I only have a x10 .exe when flashtool is extracted to my desktop
Regards Dousan...
When I go to use FlashTool, I get like 3 options as far as 'firmware'. Two X10 ones, and a 'Generic UK Xperia Play' one. The latter has about 8 or 9 different files in the pop-up column, while the other two only have like 2 files each. I think I'm supposed to flash the firmware that says Xperia Play UK Generic, correct?

Yes. And when it's done you root it with gingerbreak or any way you like. and finally you do OTA update.
Note: Your bootloader must be locked.

If you didn't unlock it your self, Then it should be locked.
@ddsds it might be the file you're trying to flash that's corrupt or something, maybe a redownload will help. Have you installed the ggsetup.exe? You might also try deleting flashtool and re-extract it again?
This is how I proceed with flashing:
1. Turn phone off.
2. Start flashtool.
3. Hit flash button in program and wait for it to tell me to plug in phone.
4. Plug in phone - it flashes.
5. Turn on phone.
(first time I flashed I chose the fw file and I only have the UK generic for the play located in that folder wich I downloaded from a thread here on xda).
(make sure unknown sources and debugging is on)

When i power on the phone i see the "Sony Ericsson" and after that a little icon with a phone and a ! sign, then the phone goes off.
Thanks!

Can you still get into fastboot mode? If so then just reflash with a rom via ftf and flashtool.

If you have not download and installed Flashtool to your PC here is the site:
http://androxyde.github.com/index.html?1357833651000
Find your ftf file for your device and use flashtool to flash it to your phone, once its done you should be golden and have a working device again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589399
Make sure to save the ftf file int the flashtool folder and I would recommend extracting the and installing the flashtool file to your desktop or someplace easy to find....
If you got more questions .....yeah leave them here... Good Luck

As my current device is CDMA, I cant say for certain but, someone correct me if I am wrong, you should be able to flash any ftf... just realize that if you flash say Hong Kong you will not have German language, you will have obviously Cantonese, Mandarin, English......
Let me take a look:
Edit:
OK, so if I were you I would take a look at the following:
From johnnzey
R800i - 4.0.2.A.0.62
From Xperia4life
R800i 4.0.2.A.0.42 Generic UK and this mirror for it
I would say either of those two should be good (taken from the FTF link I posted earlier) Then again I like to experiment so I would probably go with different FTF files just to mess with stuff.
In regards to the .69.. looks like its the same as .62. So its up to you. Actually if I were you I would probably just flash my device with the R800i 4.0.2.A.0.62, just to at least get your device back in working order.
Also if you are having issues getting the fastboot drivers to work on your computer you can download the unlock tool from Wotan Server and it installs all the files, at least I have been told it will.
Wotan Server Download Link:
http://www.wotanserver.com/en/sony-ericsson/se/xperia-play-r800/unlock-tool/debranding-flash
Again, good luck amd let us know if you save your XP or need more help.

Thanks for all the info you provided me.. I'll try this at home, until then.. THANKS !!!
Ps. I don't rly need German as a language on the phone, i'm in Romania, the phone came with a German ROM.. i was just wondering if i need the original german one..
Just one more thing, when i use Flashtool and select the ROM, do i need to check/uncheck anything like "Bootloader", "Kernel" ... Should i leave all of them to be installed ?
Thanks !
Edit: Stuck at 19% ... I don't really know what to do

Awesome, good to know you saved your PLAY. Generally if you are updating and it fails, flashtool and fastboot are your best friend. On a side note I would keep the flashtool files, FTF file copied to a seperate place for emergencies.. I leave my stuff on box.com (Xperia play users get 50gb free) or my D-H.st account.

Ah now I see it. In my xda app use black theme so it's a bit hard to read the black text lol.
@auras76 thanks for development
I tried to install this and it resulted in my phone being unusable, camera and album force close and the firmware version says A.6.152, not .200. I would not recommend installing this on e6653.

Maybe you missed some info when installing?
Or maybe tell the dev what's not working so he can fix in another build.

I installed it exactly as specified in the OP, and it's not even the right firmware version. it says that it's based on 32.0.A.6.200, but it installed 32.0.A.6.152 to my phone, or didn't actually install the system, despite Aroma completing successfully. What I've been left with is a non functional phone that I have no way of restoring back to stock, since ADB isn't working anymore so I can't use the flashtool to flash a stock FTF.
If i remember correctly that flashtool does need flash mode to flash ftf not adb.

It says it needs ADB and unknown sources. Regardless, trying to get into flashmode I get a red and green LED blink then my phone boots as normal.

the rom you flashed has a problem . as it was not tested, it only formats the partitions , but doesnt install the rom. so that rom , is your default rom , but fully wiped. to restore ,try open flashtool FIRST , and prepare your ftf , and when it tells you only , press the vol down and connect. it worked for me as i did the same

I am trying to connect in flashmode when prompted by Flashtool. I've used flashtool in the past with my Z3c, it's just not functioning as it's supposed to right now and I'm not sure why.

I have working recovery and I have the necessary drivers for Z5, it's been recognized by flashtool in the past. Since unlocking my bl and flashing this rom, I have not been able to use it.
Try different pc or usb cables.
