Bluetooth Audio - Song Data - LG V20 Questions & Answers

For as long as I can remember, I've used my phones for BT streaming when driving; Google Play Music to a BT enable Alpine headunit. With my Nexus 6P, the mp3 data would be sent to my headunit as well as the ability to control the the Play Music Player directly from it. With the v20, though, I'm no longer able to do so. My headunit simply says "song" for the titles of any track and I can no longer skip through tracks from it.
Anyone have any ideas why this would be the case?

Yeah, BT standards are not set in stone across the board. You now have a new phone new software, with an older head unit. The two are probably not fully compatible.

do you really think the Nexus 6P is "old" by those same standards? i was definitely considering some strange compatibility issue but not because the v20 was newer than the 6P by BT standards haha.

V20 comes with nugget, the 6P has marshmallow.
That's enough for even the smallest tweak to make a difference.
Also LG may not use the same BT software settings as Nexus does. As I mentioned, the last time I looked into BT standards, that was a big issue with compatibility among devices. Because companies haven't set standards for it.
I'd look into detailed compatibility first.

the v20 comes with nougat. my 6P was upgraded to nougat quite some time ago, so it's not that. but yes, i agree that there's something different between the two - it's just not the OS version.

A2DP still subpar in JI4 Eclair and JP3 Froyo.

In case anyone was curious, A2DP really doesnt sound any better between these builds. I'm starting to give up hope, maybe it's just my phone. The sound quality difference is night and day between my Vibrant and the myTouch 3G I have. I've tried on both my Kenwood head unit in my car and a pair of bluetooth headphones so I'm certain it's not the device I'm pairing with.
Ugh, just needed to vent, thanks.
pardon my ignorance, but i keep reading about A2DP and I finally want to find out what it is.
What is it?!?! thanks!!
A2DP is a bluetooth connection profile that supports high quality stereo audio. In the Vibrant's case however it is far from high quality. I was finally able to try another Vibrant today and it sounds just the same so now I know it's not just my phone. Some songs actually pass as decent bust most have a scratchy sound in the background and just lack overall depth. It really sounds like the bitrate is set too low on the Vibrant. Sabotage by the Bestie Boys for example has constant background noise/distortion that is not present when listening with wired headphones.
I've been digging around and swapping files around with the Korean Rom that has a supposed fix but I haven't made any progress.
One of the reasons I'd really like the Vibrant to sound better is because my Head Unit in my car supports A2DP. I have an app on my Vibrant called Tasker set to automatically fire up Pandora when a bluetooth connection is detected. So basically I can start my car and have my phone automatically start playing Pandora through my stereo, I can even advance songs with my dash controls. The audio quality can make it difficult to enjoy, My wife's myTouch3g on the other hand sounds superb on this same setup.
thanks for the response. i don't have a bluetooth set so that's probably why i haven't noticed this.
It really gets me down that my GPS, Compass, and A2DP are all broken on this phone. I'm gonna try and hold out for another month on a fix. If they released it in Korea hopefully they will release it here. Maybe I can talk Eugene or another dev to look into it
Audio quality is one of those subjective things and I really think a casual listener might not notice the problem but once you do you can't ignore it.
Strange, my BT sounds great streaming music through A2DP. I'm just on the stock Eclair build and streaming music through a Sony BT receiver, MW600. It's not an audiophile solution, but pushing music through some high-end IEMs sound perfectly fine for mobile listening. Maybe your hardware is bad?
I've tried two different Vibrant's on my car stereo and a pair of Bluetooth headphones and the results are the same. Again my wife's mytouch3g works perfect on both devices, maybe I should trade her phones . I've also tried an iPhone4 with excellent results.
Someone has actually opened a bug report with google on this very issue so I know I'm not alone in what I'm hearing:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9888
There was also an update for the Korean version of the Galaxy S that improved A2DP quality. This confirms that there is probably an issue that has not been addressed with our phones, since there have been no updates for Tmo customers.

Hi jz9833, what bluetooth device are you pairing your Vibrant with? Also what firmware, music app, file format are you using?
Have you considered going back to the stock ROM?
BT on mine is virtually identical to the headphone jack output. With Ety ER4p I can detect a little bit of digital hiss, but it's not really noticeable in a mobile environment.

Just today I tried a friends brand new out of the box Vibrant and I could still hear distortion/crackling at high frequencies. I then paired my headphones to my other friends iPhone4 just seconds after testing the new Vibrant and guess what, no distortion.
Man, I don't know what to say to you. My Vibrant sounds better out of BT than my iPod does out of its headphone jack. What BT headset are you using? For some strange reason they may just not get along. I've got a Sony MW600 and it's fantastic.

There is no word on if this fixed it or not and according to your link this has nothing to do with Samsung.
Look, if you don't know that Samsung has acknowledged GPS by now, has already fixed the compass in the JI4 series you mentioned in this thread, you should just jump over to Android 2.2 and it's problems.. sounds like you won't be getting a fix either way according to your own links

The first link confirms that other Android devices are having the same issue. Again my wife's myTouch3G doesn't suffer from the problem so I think it could be a simple bit rate setting that some manufacturers are overlooking.
The second link confirms that there is an A2DP problem on the Samsung Galaxy S and a fix exists.

No it doesn't. You don't know if the "fix" is not a "fix". The myTouch 3G has Android 1.6 stock and if she hasn't changed it, it's still running Android 1.6.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make, I still hear the distortion on a bone stock Vibrant. The reason I tried these beta builds was because I was hoping that Samsung would have incorporated the A2DP update. And yes the mytouch3g is running Android 1.6.
What does "You don't know if the "fix" is not a "fix"" mean? I think the fact that Samsung released an update for the Korean Galaxy S that improves A2DP quality pretty much sums it up, there was a problem and they fixed it.
This reminds me of the Oscar Rogers skit on SNL, "Sombeody needs to look at this mess and fix it!", lol.

This is true, I have no idea what the A2DP fix does besides doing what Samsung claims it does, improve A2DP playback quality, which is exactly what I want. What is your point again?
Bluetooth audio still sounds poor on the new JI5 build. I've tried on three different Vibrants and three different bluetooth audio devices and have had others hear exactly what I hear. My wife's exact words, "Your phone sounds like a radio broadcast and my phone sounds like a CD."
I spoke to Samsung and they acknowledged there was a problem and said it was due to my devices not being Bluetooth 3.0 compatible. To my knowledge you can't even buy headphones that support 3.0 yet. I really wish they could fix this, I really like the phone overall.

Very poor performance on stereo bluetooth (A2DP)

This is now the 3rd LG phone in a row to completely suck on bluetooth audio quality, my G Pro did, and the Optimus before it also. I have the AT&T version, using bluetooth headphones its not as much of an issue. In cars or on a louder higher quality audio system is where it really shows up. Ive used two diff samsung phone and an iphone 5 that sounded perfect. Even using the wired line in to the car, the volume nearly has to be maxed to have the same level as a iphone on meduim.
I want to like this phone but music is something i do all the time in the car. I had high hopes with LG saying they were putting all this high quality audio in it, but it still sounds like **** compared to other phones.
Does anyone have some code to fix this?, im sure this is something the phone will need rooted to install and im open to doing that. I have two G2s and both have the same issue, the company phone obviously I wont root, but the personal phone I just want to improve it to at least what other older smartphones were able to do

It is a proprietary standard for CD quality bluetooth.

I am also having issues w/ bluetooth in my car. I can get it connected, but it doesn't seem to want to stay connected. Mid song, the car stereo will all of a sudden drop the connection and switch to a different input ("normal" behavior when the source is disconnected. Acts the same way if you disconnect ipod from USB cable). I had an iphone 4s & Lumia 920 that did not act this way prior to my G2. Anyone try to OTA update to see if it improved things?

What year and model is your BMW and what system do you have in it? I agree with the origional post saying the quality is noticable crappy with my BMWs sound system (2013 X1 with HK and idrive). My Note II sounded perfect but my G2 sounds terrible. Especially if I crank it. I would really appreciate it if anyone had a solution because if not this otherwise great phone will have to go back
I'm a bit of an audiophile so being able to have my FLAC files is nice. I realize that Bluetooth obviously isn't streaming raw PCM, but having good quality source material can help. That and it just makes me feel better knowing.
I just wish I could navigate beyond the current playlist using the controls on the steering wheel. I have a "menu" button, but's greyed out. Same with the old GNex. I have a feeling the car is design specifically to work best with an iPhone.

Just got the lgg2 and the phone and streaming music via Bluetooth work fine in my car [2013 BMW]. However, when connected to the car via Bluetooth, neither the phones mic nor the car mic work for voice commands [like for dictating an email or text or google searches]. Probably a deal killer for me unless I can find a solution. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as otherwise I really like the phone.

The music is fuzzy or has a hiss or something. It just isn't clear and crisp like on my note ii or my friends iphones. It is most noticeable when the music get busy (bass treble and voice all at once). If I switch to the headphone jack it sounds great again but that defeats the purpose of the bluetooth and audio controls. Out of curiosity do you ever use slacker radio? I am having issues where I can't skip tracks using the car controls like i could on the note ii.
Does anyone know if we can fix this? Modify the bluetooth bitrate or add an additional profile? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can't get this fixed in the 14 day return period I will have to find a different phone. I would be happy to pay someone to make a fix. Thanks!

I always play music in my car and I had the GNex. My G2 sounds way better and is louder, I use bluetooth with the (aptx?) spec receiver.
I noticed that when I first used bluetooth for music playback, it sounded fantastic. After using it for a little bit, the sound degraded and it now sounds, well, poor. So... I'm guessing I'm just going to have to go buy an aux cable.

Android Auto or Android Head Unit?

I just discovered Android head units are even a thing. Are there any high quality ones that wont require constant tinkering to keep working? I would like to be able to use a backup camera, and a microphone for voicecalls and commands., and google maps nav of course.
There's no need for CONSTANT tinkering actually. You will most likely want to set up a few things the way you like them at first but after that you don't need to mess with your setup once you have it to your liking. I prefer an Android HU instead of Android Auto because it's a standalone device (Android Auto requires you to be connected to your phone in order to work). If you have a pwerfull phone it might work better than a HU though so that's something to consider, but for the kind of things people would usually use a HU, the specs on these stereos are good enough.
I haven't tried Android Auto though so you might want to do some more research and not take me for a guru or anything, but that's my opinion.
Do you have a recommendation on a good HU? Is 1024x768 about the highest res you can get? I have been looking at the NU3001, but it's about a year old, is there anything better out?
I haven't seen any unit with a resolution higher than 1024x768. There's basically 2 types of CPU on these things, the better one being RK3188 so look for that. here's a link to the one I got FYI

Newsmy and HuiFei are the most popular here on XDA, and Newsmy types (including NU3001) are newer.
They may not require "constant tinkering to keep working", but they seem to be full of little "gotchas" that result in some people constantly trying to work around.
The best of these Chinese HUs are running Kitkat 4.4, with no Lollipop in sight (as Marshmallow is about to come out, groan...)
I think the quality of these HUs are such that they may fail within a year or two, and even if they don't it will be annoying to be stuck on 4.4 when 7 or 8 are out.
Don't expect software fixes, unless done by someone here on XDA.

Lollipop is only needed on the phone/Android Auto app side.
So yes, Lollipop is needed to use my app in single device mode. But not when the tablet or headunit is connected to a phone running Lollipop and AA.
My Headunit works on Android 4.1+, in theory. In practice the H.264 decoder and USB Host mode needed was optional on earlier Android releases, so it still won't work well on many pre-Lollipop devices.
Due to this, I am likely to only officially support Lollipop+ and may make it mandatory. Even the 3 year old Nexus 7 2012 has Android 5.1, albeit slower than 4.4.

So far, no. One device was reported to work but the video decoding was crazy slow. It appears that Chinese chipset devices are using software decoding of H.264 video which doesn't seem to work reliably.
So I'm focusing on Nexus tablets and may support a DIY type HU running a "96boards" or similar.
I was considering buying one of these units to support it, but lack of Lollipop when Marshmallow is imminent, and no promising reports of success from testers has killed that idea for now. It's a shame because tablets are not the best solution either.

Joying unit: Terrible bluetooth quality

Hi,
I just installed my new Joying unit, but the Bluetooth software is terrible.
There is no song information and the audio quality is really poor.
Audio quality is fine using native apps to stream the same music (Spotify, Digitally Imported, Sound Cloud, etc.).
Does anybody know if the unit uses some ancient bluetooth profile?
Is there any up-to-date replacement software available?
My Phone is an iPhone 6.

In addition to my original post, I must say that both music streaming and phone calls are near to unusable.
Phone calls are best described as 1992 quality.

There are some small issues but not that big to not buy one

Did you root this by chance or are you using the stock ROM still? Do you have any problems w/ you rownice unit? Can you change the button backlight color? I may be better suited to something like this that doesn't have BT audio quality issues, especially when making calls.
Thanks

This is the version i bought: EU-JY-UQ128
https://www.carjoying.com/eu-wareho...layer-head-unit-for-double-din-universal.html
In addition to my original post, I must say that both music streaming and phone calls are near to unusable.
Phone calls are best described as 1992 quality.

I don't need BT music streaming from mobile phone, just for phone calls...
I have read someplace that there is BT modification, don't know what it does, but it supposed to help with phone calls...
Whell, I have sell my apline so there is no way back for me...
I have to buy something and this one looks the like a winner in be twin all those chines units...
Could this one work better?

Since the december update the unit runs like a charm, i don't have reboots or data loss like in the beginning and where now waiting for the lollipop update.
1: I am using the stock ROM
2: You can root but on your own risk, if its get wrong there is a unbrick rom, on the xda Ownice C200 forum you can find help to do so.
3: You can change the button backlight color.
4: The bluetooth calls are crisp and clear on the both sides.
Where did you buy yours? It doesn't seem that the manufacturer sells directly. It also seems then say w/ 1 gb w/ optinal 2gb but i don't see anyone listing this, they also show then as 800x480 w/ option for 1080x800 but again not listed.
Thanks

They have a Ownice C180 with 8gb storage, 1 gb and 800x480 screen and a C200 with 16gb storage, 2 gb and 1024*600 sceen (only the universal has a 800x480 screen)
There are 2 options, or you buy from Ownice directly or you buy bij Navall, there is no difference in hardware or so, only by the start up. Instead of Ownice you get Navall on the screen.
Big plus is that Navall has a repair depot in the UK and you don't have to pay custom taxes, if you buy by Ownice you have to send it back to china and paying in taxes if your radio comes back.
I bought my radio by Navall for that reason and there service is good
I am in the US. Iwill look into Navall. It seems they have one universal and it is oddly listed under nissan on the ownice site for some reason. Ever notice that or do you not have the universal??

No, it doesn't. I've that one and the BT is as bad as on the other units. Even using a
Parrot mic it's still bad.

Thanks for the input. Usually Parrot makes decent stuff, so it's probably issues with the base board design and the way the audio flows.
As posted on XDA and wikis, they all use the same basic board design and software loaders and make minor modifications to them. If you get into the factory config menu, you see that the unit has support for 5 or so different bluetooth chips/adapters. The only one I really had some hope for was the parrot one.

This unit has a redesigned board but they kept the stupid thing with both mics in parallel. I've cut the front mic
but the quality is still bad. A pity, but I believe that Pumpkin is just a reseller and not the designer.
I though people were rewiring and removing some resisters or something to resolve this?

I suppose that the answer is "YES", but... Have you tried with the front mic only?

Hi,
I just installed my new Joying unit, but the Bluetooth software is terrible.

Same here. Brand new head unit and music over Bluetooth from my iPhone 7 Plus to my noting head unit sounds horrible. The music apps sound great though. Joying said there is nothing wrong with their hardware. I tried two different phones and even returned my head unit for another newer model, same bad quality Bluetooth.
I have no issues with Bluetooth music streaming but the Bluetooth phone audio quality is pretty bad at times.
I'm on latest 5.1.1 December update.
One thing that annoys me though is when I'm on a Bluetooth call the device screen is locked to dialer app so I can't navigate the other functions.
Is there a way around this?
Sent from my A0001 using XDA-Developers Legacy app

What's the appeal of these units?

So I was reading the how can China manufacturer make you happy thread and mjdoom mentioned he'd like to see Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That got me wondering, what's the appeal of these units? Why not just buy one of the many mainstream headunits on the market that have those features? Is it the price? OEM(ish) fitment? etc?
For me it was price and the ability to do multiple things (Dashcam/DVR is a plus).

Simple, the appeal is that if you have android running your radio, then you can actually use it to do things.
Unlike those mainstream junk boxes that do nothing at all.
Unfortunate downside of this is the extreme buggyness of the chinese units.

For basic GPS maps and Streaming Music the unit I have works great out of the box. Far from what I would call "buggy". Most of the complaints or bugs I see here are with functionality that isn't even remotely possible on most head units. Bugs such as pairing an ODBII can be a pain, but it's not even possible to anything that isn't full android.
Just having google maps in the dash with a couple of real streaming music apps is a superior experience than anything a car manufacture is putting in their new cars. The big appeal for me is it is android and can be customized to do far more than most typical head units. It also helps that I am a very technical person and hacking with android is a hobby of mine.
We have 2 newer cars, a work truck with 'ford sync', and my wife just got a car with 'Nissan Connect' with GPS. A passenger can't even enter a destination in the units without the driver pulling over and stopping. She still ends up dash mounting her phone for google maps and just streaming music from it. Both are quite useless and overly restricted compared to a $300 Chinese head unit.
I prefer to drive my 6 year old car, just because the cheap Chinese head unit is far superior to anything shipping from the factory today in most cars.

Yeah, because the "usually fails to connect the SCO stream" isn't a really important bug.

I agree if basic BT functionality isn't working, that is a big problem. Guess I am lucky as I haven't seen that issue. BT really hasn't been much of an issue with my Joying, once I figured out how to pair my ODBII.

It usually works ok for a little while, then after some time stops working. So if you're only doing really short drives, then you might not notice it. If you're doing hour or longer drives, then you'll start to see it happen.

I drove about 4 hours over the weekend with the headunit tethered to my phone via BT, and didn't have any issues. This is on the Sept 1 ROM. Perhaps the problem is heat related since it only happens on longer drives?

No, heat related would be impossible, heatsink and fan keeps it at a nice cool 40 degrees. Something mungs up in the software after a while -- turning the bluetooth off and then back on manually temporarily corrects the problem. Could be working for you because of a change in the sept build, everything earlier exhibits the problem. Two separate units in two cars. One running may, one running july, both with heatsink and fan.
I have a DPF in my car and I run the Torque app to show status so that I can extend it's life. I also have displays for battery condition, actual speed (not the speedo adjusted one), and engine temps. Things that help me look after the car and keep it running reliably.
The great thing is that I can customise to suit my needs or if there are more things to monitor.
Being able to play any format music without having to convert it to work in the car.
Better GPS navigation with a 8" screen, dedicated up to date maps with street speeds and speed camera locations, connection to the traffic network (no data plan needed).
The only downside would be I wish bluetooth A2DP streaming was better. For me the pros outweigh the cons of the 2" monochrome screen I had before.
I've only just bought my unit but the reasons for me are the price and the greater capabilities!
