Call forwarding to Google Voice don't work - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hi
I don't have tmobile network at my work location
So before I enter into office I enable call forwarding to my Google voice number so that my calls will get forwarded and I can receive calls from Hangouts app.
Unfortunately I'm not getting any calls on Hangouts..
This used to work fine on my old Galaxy Note II.
I wish they implement wifi calling soon..
Any suggestions. Please help me

This works fine for me. I find that the settings on Google's voice site are confusing. Did you change anything there?
Also, you need to call forward your calls in the initial setup. Was this done?
EDIT: Oh, I see you want to take calls in Hangouts... That I do not do. I just get my VM handled by Google.

Check your power management settings. It sounds like the overly aggressive PM is not allowing notifications from google services and/or hangouts. Might be suspending those services/apps too.
I haven't had time to delve deep into this to figure out, but there's a few threads about similar issues where the cause was the power management. Certain apps/services will have to be white listed.

Google Voice push sms and voicemail after app update.

After the Google voice app update I have no setting for refreshing every 30 mins or so. Has anybody notice?
Very cool, looks like voice is moving along nicely.

Other forum alerted me to the update. Glad it finally got push in. Now I can turn off email notifications.
so do we have to manually install google voice (or any other preloaded apps) so that they can get auto-updates from market?
The default on the updated app seems to be disabled notifications for some reason... anyone know why?

Because you no longer update by a time schedule anymore. It's all strictly push now.

Right... but the box to "Synchronize the Inbox" was unchecked. I checked the box, which also turned the notifications back on. I used my gf's phone to leave a test vmail, and it instantly notified me.
Are you saying that leaving the box unchecked will still push the notification automatically? I thought that we had to enable synching the inbox...

No, I'm saying it was turned off because the old sync no longer applies and perhaps some people don't want push.

Sorry i dont mean to Hijack the thread but I figured i'd ask here instead of creating a new thread. Can some one help me out with setting GV up, I have my number and all I just cant get GV to replace my T-mo voicemail.
I have tried all of the setting online and when I call my GV number. Any help would be appreciated.

On your phone, simply go to settings>call settings..and change your voicemail from My Carrier to Google Voice.

No problem... just be aware that if you reboot the phone you need to go back into those settings and change it again. I don't know if the new update has fixed that little issue, as I suspect it's not with the GV app, but with the software on the phone itself. Hopefully it will be fixed soon though...
Any word or clue to whether or not Google Voice will ever implement picture messaging ?
So I've synced my Inbox, have all my notifications set-up, rebooted my phone, and am still not receiving ANY notifications for TXT messages...Anyone have any idea what might cause this? It's a bit frustrating blah, especially since I use GV text for a side business
I don't get the VM notification emails anymore, but I still get that blasted second txt msg whenever someone sends me a GV sms =/

That will happen, but if you scroll down further that in Call Settings and tap Call Forwarding settings, you'll see it's going to your GV number. The voicemail option just changes where your calls get forwarded to for voicemail.

It also changes what number is dialed when you hit the voicemail icon in the dialer. Try rebooting your phone and clicking the vmail icon... it will automatically default to the Carrier. You have to change it manually in Call Settings as I described for the dialer to revert to GV for vmail.

Uninstall the update. When you re-install after the sign part there is the option to setup for voicemail.

Ah, well I never use it because what's the point with Google Voice. I can see them and listen to them on the app without having to dial in and waste minutes.

Google Voice not receiving texts and vm (4g)

Just switched to the Nexus 4g and loving it. The only issue I'm having is now texts and voicemails are not coming through to the GV app or online, only the stock messaging. Anyone else having this problem? I can initiate texts through the GV app and the browser, but that's it.
I tried clearing the data and reinstalling. Nothing. When I go to voicemail under settings, Google Voice is not listed as a choice.
How do you have your number setup. Is it ported? I would start with checking your online settings, but more information is needed.

Also, when you call VM, are you getting Sprint's VM or are you getting GV Voice mail? That's another good place to start to see if you're fully ported over.
Dial *28 and your google voice area code and number then hit send. Did you set up conditional call forwarding? There might also be a setting in calls section to select voicemail. Carrier or google voice.
Personally, I would stay away from that porting your number can of worms. To me it's more trouble than it's worth. There's really not much or any difference between the old way of having them separate. You have more control if you use the old way. You also don't have that mms snafu like you would if you integrated.
I just read your post again. Something isn't set up right if there isn't a choice. I think I know. Go to the market and download google voice again and install it on top of itself. Make sure you are logged out of gv on your phone before doing this. I think updating breaks integration and let's you use gv the old fashioned way.
I'm looking and I don't see anything talking about google voice setup.

Edge 7 and Google Voice

I am coming from a LG G3 to the Galaxy S7 Edge. I had Google Voice working just fine on my G3. I could text/call from my Google Voice number and also my voicemails were automatically sent to Google Voice instead of Verizon.
I installed Google Voice on the Edge and it gave me the normal your carrier doesn't support automatic configuration. On my G3, I just clicked through the configure screens and selected Google Voice and everything worked fine. If I do that on my Edge it doesn't work. When I call my number, it says voicemail hasn't been set up for the phone number instead of forwarding to google voice.
I did the manual process of forwarding calls to Google Voice, *71{phonenumbertotransferto}, *90{phonenumbertotransferto} and *92{phonenumbertotransferto} and it works but it rings 15 times first. This isn't ideal.
Also when I try to use Google Voice to call a number, it looks like it is working but it is calling from my verizon number instead of my Google Voice number.
Anyone have ideas on how to get this to work correctly?
**Update**
I was able to get the time until Google Voicemail picks up shortened by turning on Do Not Disturb in Google Voice settings. This is a work around for me since I don't have people calling me on my Google Voice number. If I did, this wouldn't be an option. Still not able to make calls with Google Voice from my phone though.
May I ask first, why are you still using the defunct Google Voice app? Why haven't you simply switched over to Hangouts?
I ask because Hangouts has everything you have asked for in this post. I use Hangouts and actually 2 Google numbers attached to my phone thru 2 separate Google accounts. This phone has the call forward feature built into the phone settings so you don't even need to dial *71,etc. Just go into phone settings and tell it which number you want to forward your calls to when they are unanswered.
To stop it from ringing 15 times before your call transfers finally to your Google voice mail, you have to stop the call from "bouncing" around I call it. In your google voice settings (easiest to see on your computer)... You probably have both "Forward calls to Google Chat" AND "Work" (or Home or whatever you call your phone you forward your calls to).
You need to uncheck forward calls to Google chat. That will stop the crazy number of rings before it transfers to voicemail. The only other way I know is how you suggested and use Do Not Disturb.
Lastly, again if you use Hangouts, it actually has a dialer app that goes along with it that you can use to dial out just as normal whenever you want to use your google number to dial out. I use it often. It works great.

EDIT: Actually I think the ring problem is fixed with changing the call screening feature in your voice settings (again easiest seen by visiting Google voice settings via your computer). I'm pretty sure I turned on call screening to correct that issue. Been so long since I've messed with the setting LOL. But if you research call screening it actually changes how the system works somewhat, including answering calls, etc. I'm pretty sure that's how I did it. Again sorry for the long winded post.

Can you explain what you mean by "defunct Google Voice app"?
I use GV to access my mobile voicemail messages, have done so for years...are you saying I should uninstall it and I can use Hangouts to view/listen to my voicemails?
When I go into GV I can see a list of current/previous voicemail messages. In Hangouts I don't see the list of voicemails that I see in the GV app...can you explain a little more how Hangouts can replace GV, and where/how I can get to my voicemails from Hangouts?

Yeah I mean Hangouts has completely replaced Google Voice.
In fact, I haven't used GV since Hangouts came out. I still see the same voicemails I always have. Only now you can see everything that comes into Hangouts all in one place. You still can set up notifications in hangouts when someone leaves you a voicemail, just like in the old GV app. And you can see the transcribed message right there in Hangouts. You can either read it, or hit the play button and hear out loud. I prefer mostly to play them out loud, because a lot of the time Google's auto transcription service is pretty bad, especially with foreign accents.
In Hangouts, you have 3 screens to swipe thru to the left or right. The furthest left is the contacts/settings/etc. The middle is the screen where you would see any voicemail/ text messages. And the furthest right screen is the Hangouts Dialer (you do need to download the dialer app separate in the play store).
Try this. Delete your GV app. Go to the play store and download Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer. Then setup Hangouts. Hangouts dialers will automatically setup when you setup Hangouts. Add your Google account when you set up, and you should be all set. Then of course change your settings how you like. See if it works for you. I personally don't know anyone who uses GV app anymore. Even Google on the play store says its no longer supported.
But yes, when Hangouts came out, it was a COMPLETE replacement for Google Voice app. It's really awesome if you take advantage of all its features.

I should also say this. Hangouts will ask you if you want to make it your default SMS texting app and have all your texts go thru Hangouts. I personally don't do that, but you can. I don't do it only because I don't like the look of hangouts enough to use it all the time for texting. That's just a personal thing. I like to use the stock messaging app that I can keep themed like the rest of the phone from the Samsung theme store. But you can indeed use hangouts as your entire texting/messaging/voicemail platform and it will perform beautifully.
IF you only want to use a separate texting app, just make sure you keep that in mind.

I do Google voice for my number and use hangouts which I personally don't much like. Is there a messaging app that can accept my GV number other than the stock GV and hangouts apps? I looked a few phones ago and nothing existed at the time to handle GV/hangouts messages.
Don't hold me to this because I haven't used them personally, but I believe you can use something like Groove IP. And I think there's an app on the play store called "Phone for Google Voice". But again I've never used them so I can't say for sure. Hangouts has always filled the void that I needed it to. It's not at all perfect, but Google hardly ever makes a perfect app lol.

Hangouts for calls has a very poor echo that everyone I talk to complains about, it heats the phone up extremely fast and kills battery, and if you are in a weak coverage area calls get dropped.
I'm using the Google Voice app fine on my S7 Edge to make and receive calls. Of course I use Hangouts for texting and receiving voicemails though.
I've done that for years. Was just hoping for an alternative messaging app. I've had the same GV number since the first galaxy S lol.

I don't call out much on my GV number, so i use hangouts when I do.
That being said, you indeed can get other apps... Or at least used to be able to, that would let you dial out with your GV number. Phone+ comes to mind, Groove IP like I mentioned before, and others. Some are just app setups that will allow you to pick contacts that auto dial out on your GV number. I think it's Phone+ that does something like that. I just saw a thread over in the regular S7 forums where people were having some of the same issues. Apparently when HD calling was enabled a while ago, it maybe helped to make it harder for all who used Google Voice. I see it looks like it started back on the S6 or S5. This is my first new phone since my Note 3 so go figure lol....

I was completely unaware that calling and asking for shortening of the unanswered ring time still worked. Thanks for that info, good to know. I thought that option was long gone.

WiFi Calling Was my Culprit
So despite everyone telling the OP that Google Voice sucks, I still think it's functionality if FAR preferable to Hangouts. Not only is the interface much cleaner, but the Chrome extension on desktop is much more conducive to texting and voicemail management. In addition, it is totally integrated with Google Contact management, which is a plus.
I switched to a Galaxy S7 Edge yesterday and had setup issues with Voice. Finally after a conference call with Sprint and Google support (Google was just kind enough to help, since Google offers no live support for free apps), we found out that it is indeed WiFi Calling that is the culprit in Voice setup. However, it's not enough to simply uninstall the native app and turn off WiFi Calling, you have to go into the WiFi Calling settings and disable the service completely. For me that was at the bottom of the 9-1-1 location settings page. After disabling WiFi Calling, my profile automatically updated, I uninstalled Google Voice and reinstalled, and setup was a total breeze, everything was right with the world, and I can continue using Hangouts as it should be, to share GIFs with my friends and talk trash about Fantasy Football.
I hope this helps anyone with this issue, the Sprint Technical Support guy said he'd run across it yesterday and had no idea what to do with the issue until now.

I don't think anyone told him the GV app sucked. Originally I was asking him why he was still using the GV app, just to get an idea of his issues and how to better help the situation. In particular, I just said it was defunct, aka antiquated....and it is. It still has its uses as a legacy app, or as a stand alone app in circumstances, but for the most part, it's still around for legacy support. Up until recently, Google even listed it this way on the play store.
The GV app still does one thing Hangouts won't do. Hangouts will only make wifi or voip calls. The GV app WILL call out from your GV number, but it will use cellular service and use your phone minutes. That's about the only reason I see to actually have the GV app still. Hangouts has every one of my contacts integrated just like any other app I have on my phone that does the same thing. Admittedly, Hangouts contacts view is really ugly lol.
As far as the PC side, I have Hangouts installed on my windows 10 laptop, and it rings beautifully every time I get a call or text, I can check voicemails, etc. All my contacts are integrated for both Gmail accounts that i can keep running simultaneously. It works quite well. I also have Google Voice chrome extensions. Everything works fine together.
The rest is just preference and style choice. I've never had issues with Hangouts. And I never really had issues with the Voice app before that. I've also not had the unfortunate bad luck of dealing with the setup problems everyone seems to be having. I have NOT however, set up wifi calling yet on my S7Edge, so my guess it that's why I'm not experiencing all the issues people are having with setup.

I'm on Sprint, but had the exact same experience. Been dealing with it for a few weeks. And this was the only solution.
As far as using Hangouts instead of the GV app- I can't get what you guys are describing to work. I have Hangouts installed, I installed the dialer, but nothing I do shows my voicemails. I only see the text messages and a call log. I'd be interested in another option to the GV app, which I think is adequate, but not great.

I was using the GV app and I tried this setup but my calls and VM's don't show up in Hangouts. I can't seem to get them to show up.
I figured it out. You have to select this option in Hangouts.
As a follow up:
Working with a few Sprint techs got me this info. GV won't work if WiFi calling is set up or enabled. It doesn't matter if you turn it off. It has to be completely deactivated.
I've been using GV for many years, and never had a problem on other phones, even using WiFi Calling. This is obviously a s/w issue. Hopefully it can be remedied in a future update.
I just upgraded from an S4 to S7. I too have been using GV since it came out. Hangouts option to be used as a default messaging app is giving me reason to try it, as it's been horrid for quite some time. To make calls from your GV number, install the GV app and use it's settings for which number. To get GV vm in Hangouts, again use GV option to have them available for Hangouts (there is a setting in GV).
My question for the group, how do you get Verizons VM to Hangouts? The old way through GV appears to not work. Having my Verizon number forwarded to GV results in my phone not ringing for either number, but it does ring on desktop.

Dial *71 followed by your google voice number and follow the prompts to set up call forwarding.

Force activate Google Voicemail on your Pixel/XL

Edit: Perhaps using the word (Re)activate would clear some confusion. I chose to use 'Activate' since I had been unable to get my existing Google Voice account up and running on my Pixel from day one. These were the steps that I personally used, with Verizon as my carrier, to (Re)activate or "jump start" my existing Google Voice account to run on my Pixel. For me personally, this was the only thing that worked. And at the moment it seems to be working for others as well. As mentioned below, the full setup for Verizon may be different, and the full setup and "reactivation" for lack of a better word, is indeed different for other carriers, could be similar, I honestly don't know.
I'm on Verizon, but this should work for any carrier -
1. Go to Google Voice on PC, click the 'Settings' cog/hamburger icon
2. Under the 'Phones Tab' it will say 'Forwards calls to:' you should see your phone's phone number and under that click 'Edit'.
3. Click 'Show Advanced Settings' still under 'Phones Tab'.
4. Scroll down to 'Forwarding Options' and click 'Activate'.
5. Now you should have a pop-up window with instructions to call your GV number. Mine (Verizon) instructs me to add a *71 in front of my GV number -
*71555-555-5555 - then click send and follow the prompts when your phone rings.
6. Enjoy Google Voicemail again.

In addition to all this, here are some additional steps I had to take in order to get Google Voice to stick. I believe these instructions from this point on are Pixel specific, but please do not quote me on this -
Additional Steps (I took) to get Google Voice up and running on the Pixel (the following steps will be done from your phone)
1. Head to the Phone app, swipe over to Voicemail and approve Visual Voicemail.
2. Then head to GV app and go to Settings and check on Voicemail Display.
3. While still in GV, run through your Sync and Notifications and check what applies to you.
4. Then return to your Phone app (your voicemail may go a little crazy at this point due to syncing, mine does), go to Settings>Calls and turn off Video Calling and Voice Privacy.
5. Then go to your overall phone settings for the phone itself, and tap More>Cellular Network Settings and turn off Advanced Calling.
I think that is everything. If anyone has any additional input at all, that'd be helpful. Come to think of it, a per carrier set of instructions would be nice if anyone would like to help...just throwing this out there, if it already exists, a link would be nice.

Each carrier has a different way to setup call forwarding, so your instructions will only work for Verizon. People on other carriers will need to find the proper dialing sequence to forward missed calls properly. I also think there is another number to call to set it up properly on Verizon, so you're missing a step. Finally, this isn't Pixel specific, so it would be better suited in a more general forum, and there is likely another thread that has all this info in it already.

I've been using GV since early 2010, I've used it on all my phones. The Pixel was the first phone I had come across where no matter what I did to try configure it, Verizon VM would hold true, even as far as Google Dialer telling me GV was the voicemail I had chosen, and GV settings was also saying the same. This was Pixel specific and others I had talked to were dealing with the same the thing. Long story short, after several days of trying anything and everything I could think of to get it to work, these were the exact steps I took to make it work and to make it stick. Installing the app didn't work for me, manually configure didn't work, nothing but this worked, and since I noticed a few others dealing with similar issues, I posted this. It doesn't seem to be widespread among all Pixel users, but I knew I wasn't the only one, so if it helps a few people, cool. If it doesn't work, we'll try to figure something else out.
The call forwarding sequence on Verizon isn't Google Voice specific, you could use it to forward to any number.

Please see my response to uicnren as well.
1. This was very Pixel specific for me and the others I had talked to. This was the only phone we had had problems setting up GV on.
2. I should have been more clear, this is for existing accounts, this isn't setting up GV from scratch.
3. These were the exact steps I took.
4. One person I spoke with said he was on Sprint and that the *71 I use for Verizon was indeed a different number, but the same setup nonetheless, I should have been more clear about that.
5. Thanks for input, and in pointing out more clearly that it could be a completely different setup among carriers.
6. And finally, next time something as broad as this could be (again, it wasn't for me, but you make a good point) I will post in a more general area.

That's true, and I agree completely. However I wasn't trying to convey that, I was just pointing out the steps that I personally used, with Verizon as my carrier to (re)activate or simply get GV to work as my voicemail again for the Pixel. And the reason I said it should work for other carriers is because someone using Sprint used essentially the same method, but with a different "beginning" number added to their GV number. I guess my question to you is, should I have pointed out what you said? If so, why?

This is nothing new and tells you how to do it on the Google Voice Site! :angel:
You can also do it from a PC on the Verizon wireless site. My Verizon has a screen to program call forward for busy no answer.
The full setup for Verizon call forwarding to get Google voice working is to dial

This has been the same issue since at least as far back as the Galaxy Nexus.

I had the Galaxy Nexus and didn't have to do this setup. I've had Google Voice since the HTC Droid Eris, and I can tell you that was not how I initially set mine up, I called one number and done. In fact, in the last almost 7 years I've never used the *71 method one time, aside from maybe the initial setup. For what it's worth, all I had to do was click "manually configure", then back out of the phone app, then it would load me directly into google voice and it would begin syncing everything. And that was it, every phone, every time, for 7 years. The *71 deal was completely new to me.
This worked great! I can now get the phone to translate everything to me without even listening to my voicemail!
Only one issue though, I only receive the translation through text message, hangouts and email... How do I get the translation to come up in the actual voicemail app through google stock dialer?? My voicemail's show up but it doesn't translate them?? any clue?? In settings I have Visual Voice enabled also...

Great, glad it worked for you! Here you go, this should help out some -
Google Voice settings, check voicemail display, then run through your sync and notifications and check what applies to you. Then return to your phone app, go to settings>calls and turn off video calling and voice privacy. GV will not work with these on. They are conditional call forwarding,
One is no answer,
One is busy,
One is if the phone is unreachable
If I remember correctly the specific types of call forwarding.

I don't know why I find this so cool, but I do. It's kind of like those secret/hidden numbers you can dial to access even more settings or whatever. Where did you find this? I never knew this existed.

This was all from Google support forums for Google voice originally. Verizon doesn't allow the Google voice app to change the call forwarding settings to automatically set up voicemail, this is just manually changing the same settings.
I've got the numbers saved now so I don't look them up every time I get a new phone.
FYI - Verizon now supports Visual Voicemail on Android 7.1+ for those of you using this as a workaround to get VVM on your Pixel. Functions perfectly with the stock dialer.

Google voice is not compatible with this phone

If you configure to always use Google voice when making calls you will get an error that says call not made. If you configure Google Voice to ask you every time you make a call you will get the same error. This error also shows up in the Mate 8. Here is another thread that discusses it.

I agree that works, its just a little weird in work flow when compared to otehr phones where you can use the stock dialer
I cannot send MMS via Hangouts on this phone. Very frustrating some things don't quite work

Had same issue on my Nexus6 P after flashing Nougut! Flashed a custom N ROM and it worked! Some have said it's a Hangouts/N issue...
Found another issue but this is with using hangouts to make call. If you have a bluetooth device that can be used for phone calls hangouts will try to first use that device to make the call before defaulting to the ear piece. Also if you go into speaker mode you can't go back to just headset as it will yet again try to connect to that Bluetooth device and fail causing it to go back to speaker mode.
I have a Asus ZenWatch 3 and hangouts keeps trying to use this device for phone calls. Also it will try to connect if I place the call in speaker mode through hangouts and keep failing and reverting back to speaker mode.
This pretty much makes the phone useless to me. So the phone will be going back to best buy. Once Huawei fixing the stock dialer to use voice then I will come back to it

i just tested bluetooth and hangouts with my Plantronic headset and i was able to (1) initiate a call via bluetooth, (2) switch to handset, then (3) switch to speakerphone and then (4) go back to bluetooth without any problem. does your Asus ZenWatch 3 allow you to initiate/answer/conduct calls via the watch, and that's where the connection issues occurred? thanks for clarifying.
new version of Google Voice @ apkmirror site; i installed it and - so far - i can make calls via the dialer using the "Ask each time you make a call" option. using the "Use your Google Voice Number" (for all calls) option is still failing. interested to know if others using the newest GV version are having a similar experiences to me. will update if i begin having issues again.

doi! lol sorry my bad lol. Thats great news! still pretty frustrating though. For us to rely on GV and have it not work like its supposed to is kind of worrying. Makes me concerned and update might break it.
I've been using it only for the last two days. Where it is very buggy for me is with Android Auto; I have to ask it to call on average of 3 times from the car. If I tap the button on the phone it calls, but that defeats the whole purpose of Android Auto. I'm still trying to get the phone to divert ALL of my messages, etc over to Voice. The stock messaging app duplicates the text messages. People I've communicated with on Hangouts still come through on Hangouts if they have more than one account... A bunch of reduncy that I didn't have prior to using it. I may delete it and wait for the prime time app. I'm still trying to learn the phone; I don't want to add unnecessary quirks to it and blame the phone.
I have Chinese AL00 version and using "OK Google" works with default phone. e.g. "Ok Google, call Joe". It also will start from the locked screen but you have to unlock for the phone call to be placed.
