I want to pull the trigger and install cm14 but I have to admit one major thing I like on my rooted stock ze551kl is that when I need to correct typing mistakes it autozooms and allows me to get the cursor in just the right spot. Does cm 14 have anything similar and if not is there an app that does the same thing automatically that can replace it? Magnification in accessibility settings just does not work well for me for many reasons.
Also, is anyone able to use this as a daily driver without bluetooth issues or other annoyances? That also keeps me on stock as I know they work.

Don't ever worry about trying new things. You can go back to stock anytime you feel like it. I have 550kl so I'll just say I think the bugs are all the same and the main components of cm14.1 and RR N are extremely stable. A few bugs but nothing that would keep it from being used as a daily.
About the keyboard I've never heard of that. Is that a stock keyboard feature? If so then you can download the ZenUI stock keyboard from the playstore and it should have the zoom feature.
(almost) nothing is unfixable. Make a backup and try new ROMs. Who knows, you just might like it.

Thank you for the non-judgmental reply. I backed up my rooted stock with twrp and will give it a try. I was happy with cm13 but reverted to stock because of Bluetooth annoyances.
The zoom feature I'm talking about is when you hold the cursor when correcting in a text box, it pops up a magnification of it and makes it really easy to correct so i can change just one mistake rather than delete whole words. A minor feature I know, but one that not all roms seem to have (my stock galaxy tab for example). I've searched for apps or xposed modules but nothing pops up.
I have some questions too, currently on ZE550KL CM13 Beanstalk_0813 custom.kernel.nemesis.fusion + xposed. I flashed this older rom mainly due to better battery savings
custom kernel nemesis fusion gives
- improved cpu, gpu governors, i/o schedulers, usb fast charging
xposed with greenify donate, amplify battery extender allows deep hibernation, doze etc of apps & system apps
Is it worth it to lose all these features to upgrade to CM14 Nougat? coz xposed for nougat is not ready.

Performance was never an issue with either CM14.1 OR 13. Battery in CM14.1 using greenify only was exactly the same. Out of 14-16 hours worth of battery I could easily get 6-8 hours SOT. That's with YouTube, social, light gaming, and with location turned off. I have MSM8939 3gb variant. I hear the MSM8916 version doesn't do as well. I'll post a screenshot of my son's usage later using RR N. He's 3 years old and watches youtube and plays games all day on it.

I think MIUI wasn't enough for you screw things down! ;P;P
Try CM 13 its way smoother or snapoier than other heavily skinned UIs.

Are you on latest official nightly?
CM is not lagging even a bit on my device try clean installing the next nightly and use Slim Gapps Zero this time.
Also flash Berserk latest kernel and tune it as per the OP of Berserk Kernel thread.
Flash Xposed and install Greenify and activate the Greenify module in Xposed framework, Turn ON the 'Aggressive Doze' from settings of the Greenify App and hibernate unnecessary apps from running in the background.
The combo of these things will give the best Battery life and performance.
I personally get 6hrs of SOT daily.

I wonder how much time it takes.
Hi All,
Since acquiring MXP back in Oct 2015, I have stayed away from rooting and flashing custom ROM (something which I did from day one on my Samsung Google Nexus) because I was more or less happy with the out of the box behavior.
But now MXP on Marshmellow has become kind of slow and ofcourse Nougat roadmap is still not clear (whether it will at all come in May).
So now I want to join the wagon.
So it would be immensely helpful if you can mention which custom ROM you are using as daily driver and why sticking to it?
My criteria is primarily smooth performance and decent battery (now it doesnt last 12 hours on full charge).
Thanks in advance
Roy
I tried almost every Nougat rom (Tesla, CM, RR, AOSiP, AOSP Extended) and finally been using AOSP Extended. I feel this is the most stable and smooth one out there. I use Greenify & GlassFish script and easily get over 30-40 hours on a single charge. I don't play any games on my phone, just some web browsing, music, whatsapp etc. It has almost all the customization available too.
Just like you I was sticking to stock
Now after the N delay, tested a few custom roms. From my experience, also in gaming, Aosip with Optimus Kernel and GlassfishCP-Optimus script have the best performance, does not overheat and has near stock battery life.
Instead of Greenify (that's behaving weird and sometimes causing wakelocks) I'd recommend Servicely.
Still not tested but also CypherOS should be worth a test run. It seems like the most stable and lighter rom on paper!
all nougat roms have camera bug,,d camera focus is not so good

Thanks all for your replies - sorry for replying late here.
I have seen Moto G4 Plus camera and I am not too happy with its focus.
Is the same camera app used in Nougat roms as well?
I hope and guess the MXP moto camera app would still work - right?
Thanks again!
i am going to change my stock rom, which custom rom should i choose?
Hello all,
I have been using this ROM with Optimis r20 kernel and latest GlassfishCP script since last 4 days.
This is my first custom ROM in MXP, so I must congratulate the devs who have made this usable as daily driver.
Mostly has been running fine with two odd reboots from Recent screen.
-------------------------------------------- Problem below is fixed ------------------------------
One odd observation-FB is unable to get updates, even within app when in mobile data mode. Works perfectly fine with Wifi. Otherwise mobile data works fine and other social apps work fine in mobile data mode. Any guidance if this makes sense, would help.
--------------------------------------------------- Solution by @manddar --------------------------------
This happened to me as well on almost all ROMs, in my case mms internet access point was setup instead of one which is required for internet, www to be exact for Vodafone India.
Try to switch it and you will be good to go. Alternate method is to remove proxy from access point.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My one of the most important criteria was battery life which has not improved till now. I would still reserve my view on that as it's been only 4 days.
Camera focussing has also been same as before in stock MXP using stock Moto camera app(not g4).
Cheers
Roy.
I primarily use RR as my daily driver. Mainly because it has the most features out of all roms. I like having as much customization options as possible. Battery life is pretty good for me, and the rom is stable and performs quite well.
My second choice would be either AOSP Extended or AOSIP. Both have a lot features as well, and they're very smooth and have excellent battery life.
I don't use any mods or custom kernels.

I don't see such an issue. Maybe you have some hardware issue or a scratched lens. What ROMs did you try?
Any one facing issue with quick charge? It stopped working on my phone
AOSCP because:
-Pixel style;
-Same battery life as stock;
-No bugs whatsoever
I'm on aokp rom since early January and it has been my daily driver ever since. No sudden reboot, no app crashes, everything works fine, bluetooth, gps, moto camera, google camera (I use it only for lens blur effect). maybe someday I'll try the aoscp or the aicp roms.
I have unlocked my bootloader, rooted with Magisk and flashed AsopExtended Rom. Very happy with the performance of my A2017U as it is right now. My question to ya'll is, What would be the pros and cons of returning to complete stock (for OTA updates) or sticking with rooted and custom rom and not being able to receive OTA updates?
whats the question here? Its on you... what you prefer
Lol that depends of your needs - I stick to stock because of audio (mostly) and somehow bcz of camera (as far as I know you can install stock camera app).
That's question is a little bit irrevelant when you was stock and now you are testing custom rom.
So the answer is simply - replay to your question by yourself and with margin to your needs.
Had to test the waters with custom roms on this phone, but was just wanting to hear other peoples thoughts on the subject. I've always tinkered with customizing my phones and enjoy doing so. Would like to hear different points of view and then see if it would make me change my mind. Sometimes custom roms have little bugs that people can or can't live with, and in some cases stock is best for total functionality. Just curious of others opinions.....

IMHO custom ROMs are littered with bugs, but mostly overlookable. Take the phone bug or storage with SD card bug for example.
Stock works better in every regard (except substratum, damn you mifavor) and with MiFavor 5 this is even truer. But if you like your current ROM there's no reason to go back...

Yeah, I finally went back to stock B25 via the DrakenFx method to retain root and custom recovery. I came across the phone bug on my custom rom and that helped me make my decision to go back to a stock rom.....
Yep, used custom ROMs from the first week of owning the phone until about a month ago when I went back to B25 with Magisk. Couldn't be happier.
I was about to make a similar thread myself but saw this one. I have been running custom roms since day one but have been considering returning to stock.
A brief summary of the benefits:
Reasons to go with stock:
Fully functional ZTE camera app with no bugs - This is perhaps more important than you might think, ZTE haven't enabled the Camera 2 API which means its very possible we are going to get the best quality and feature-set by sticking with the stock app. If ZTE haven't released their blobs there could very well be reasons to stick with the default camera app...not only that but I like it. You can install the mod, but there are aspects that will never work and some roms and kernels play more nicely with the mod than others.
Dolby Atmos app. Similar to the camera on stock this would just mean less messing about, you can of course get atmos mods in magisk but whether they work as well as the stock ZTE app I am not sure. The strange thing is I have never had the stock ZTE Axon atmos magisk mod to work on a custom rom, even though I have an Axon!
Reliability, no need to worry about force closes or apps not working, everything pretty much just works. So much less stress if you use your phone as a daily driver.
Ease of use, less features makes the phone easier to use. In some cases even when you are a tinkerer like me its sometimes good to be able to forget about continuously tweaking stuff and digging yourself in to a never ending upgrade cycle.
Oreo, it looks like if you stay stock we will see Oreo sooner than custom roms.
Reasons to go custom:
Substratum, oh boy would I miss this going back to stock. The ZTE theme engine is pants compared and I love the work that goes in to my current premium theme.
Battery life, perhaps with the aid of also a custom kernel there are some very nice roms and kernels being worked on which allow you to fully customise and save battery life.
Features, you can set the phone up exactly as you want too, every small detail can be customised. You can choose exactly which rom you like based on the features you use.
Performance, you can get more performance out of a custom rom with custom kernel and find a nicer balance between battery and performance, whichever suits you.
Fun, its fun to flash different roms and get the flashing bug. You learn a lot and get to join in with a fantastic community where people help each other.
Third option, run a debloated custom rom.
Seems to be more and more popular, as an ex Nexus 5 user I loved Cataclysm rom for this very reason. You keep all the features associated with stock with added performance benefits, fixes and less bloat. There is a downside if you plan on keeping atmos as some stock roms seem to strip it away, but it is a nice compromise between the options above. Usually these roms are more reliable as they are based on stock too. If you want a lean rom that just works, this may suit you!
Its such a hard choice and one I still havent decided on, if I have missed anything please let me know!
Background info and summary:
My first smartphone was a ZTE blade 2 and it was a beast for the money, this phone is tremendous too. My GF owns a pixel and apart from the camera this phone trumps it for value no question...for less than half the price.
I have to say though, I do miss the days of my Nexus 5 and the larger mod community, I realise these days have gone now with google devices but perhaps next time I will opt to go to Oneplus just so I can trust a bit more that there will be less caveats going custom as if there is one complaint I have with ZTE it is their unwillingness to release their source code for the little tiny things like the camera api and atmos.

Some comments about this:
-Stock still has RRO support, so while it is kinda craptastic to use substratum this way, it is doable. I have most of my apps with Swift Dark (the ones that don't force close anyways) and Lawnchair with black theme, on MiFavor 5 which already has a rather black quick settings screen. The result is awesome
While you might be getting more battery life from a custom ROM, I totally disagree on the performance part. Everything works just slower. But yeah, battery-wise I got 7h SOT once which is absolutely bonkers :silly:
If you want a nice modded stock try any MiFavor 5 modded ROM like RDX or ADM Team. Those keep Atmos and use MiFavor 5 B13, which seemingly have a new camera app?

Thanks I will give ADM a try first since RDX seems to exclusively for the A2017 and I own the A2017U.
Frankly when I saw substratum without OMS support before I wasn't impressed but it sounds like it's worth a look.
Performance wise I loved running AOKP. It runs so much faster than resurrection remix and faster than my brief time on stock also.
It's a pain sacrifices have to made somewhere, but I guess you can't argue for the money!

Just installed adm rom and substratum but can't get any themes to work at all. Substratum appears to work and let's me install them but after a reboot they don't work.
I tested with the Google app, gmail and chrome amongst others. I am using swift black.
I guess it's just a bug with the adm Rom? Magisk is working fine I think.

It can't be because I had everything themed on ADM ROM too. Except system ui and that stuff since it can't be themed. no idea why that happens.

Were you using the new release with version 5 of mifavor?
What about systemless host list in magisk enabled to get adaway to work?
Only two things I have changed. I am using A2017U with the b13 bootstack.
Haven't changed anything else so no idea why it isn't working.

I would stick with stock unless you are an extreme power user. ZTE fixed 99% of the issues with MiFavor with 7.1.1 and custom ROMs are littered with SO MANY little bugs. MiFavor is extremely stable now. Audio and camera is also much worse on custom.
But hey whatever you prefer.
Thought I'd start this discussion just for a place to talk about what rom we're all running at present, for what reasons etc. to perhaps offer and overview of what choices are available for our great device.
I'm currently on Oreo Beta 1 - runs very quickly with such impressive performance, loving the stock camera (though keen to see what future software updates can offer...), with my screen brightness down to 5-10% indoors and on WiFi I'm getting anywhere between 10-12 hours screen on time.
Will be curious to run Lineage when it comes official/stable and will love it when Google camera port is running nicely on our phones as definite enhancements can be had!

Nice! I'm curious of it, how do you find it compared to stock? In terms of speed (can't imagine this device being any faster lol), battery life and of course the seemingly dreaded question... Camera quality?
Right now on official OmniROM 8.1. It's fast, extremely stable, has excellent 10 hour screen on time for battery life over 1.5 days(my usage), and has excellent OMS theming support with nice minor OS tweaks and addons like OmniSwitch Recents replacement.
I was running official Oreo OOS but didn't care for the lack of proper theming, but the camera is a tad better and battery life was about the same. Maybe a little less than Omni.

Sounds good to me! Is it the case that some Google camera ports work better on none OOS ROMs? Also with OmniROM, can you run that encrypted?
Try the Validus by Ground Zero Team, rock stable and gives outstanding battery life, lost 5% for 1st hour of screen on.

Wow now that's an impressive statistic!! Did you tweak the kernel at all or is that with the 'of of the box' tweaks? Also how's the camera on it, do any Google camera ports work?

No tweaks beside my own changes of rom content. Camera is "snap" camera as seen in many roms, have not checked picture quality yet tho. Same goes for other camera apps.

I don't think the ports run any better or worse depending on the ROM.
Omni runs encrypted by default..
Codename phoenix 8.1 because it's stable, fast and great battery life, plus the right customisation features
And you can run it encrypted too

thats great. i can make use of my otg drive then..
i just need to start reading now coz im running my 5t stock unrooted.
Only ever used three ROMs on this device. First was the stock ROM the device came with (OOS 4.7.3), didn't get to experience it much because i flashed FreedomOS 4.7.4. I loved that ROM on my 3T. Had a lot of features. But i kinda lost interest because most of what i found useful in the 3T weren't yet implemented on the 5T ROM. And the dev took his sweet time releasing updates (not that taking time is wrong, it's just that i need my updates as quickly as possible). So i flashed OOS Oreo Beta 1. I'm loving it so far. I'll probably try out LOS when they release a stable 8.1 build.
Some say Stock ROM is the best while others favor Xiaomi.eu. What is your experience?

May i ask you or warn you?[emoji23] [emoji23]
You are just creating a post like a PM in social media. [emoji43]
And for the above message
I would say
Those rom which occupies less storage space is the one which saves the battery.
And
I prefer custom rom for battery saving as they are made for saving, performance purposes.

This is a direct question that requests the personal experience of other users. Don't understand why it would be against the rules.
Anyway, I switched to Xiaomi.eu after Stock. Will report my own experience after some days.
Once I tried aosp I couldn't look back... MIUI just isn't as fast and stable, and since we don't have custom kernels on MIUI 11 Q I can't adjust the screen saturation (lavender screen is pretty washed out by default). In terms of battery life, Lineage OS with stock kernel has probably been the best for me.

Thank you for your advice. I've been hearing some problems about Lineage, but you actually made me consider it. Would you say it's worth to switch from eu?

I've tried some aosp roms and Xiaomi eu too but none of these can't be compared with extremely debloated stock miui pfgeuxm rom, after I deleted most of Xiaomi &miui trash apps I'm getting 8-9 hours sot and very stable no bugs miui 11.0.7.And 1.8 GB free ram

You are not the only one that speaks in Stock's favor. So there is a noticeable difference between it and Xiaomi.eu? I'm feeling tempted to go back to Stock now, custom ROMs are nice but there always some issues.

If there will be aosp rom for making me leave stock , this will be resurrection remix android 10 official, but I see that its not gonna happen.
Alright, forget what I said, due to many people praising it I tried MIUI 11.0.7.0 PFGEUXM, debloated of course.
With 3G network only and full Wi-Fi access, I'm getting battery life similar to my Z Play's. It maybe slightly better or worse, they seem the same to me but in any case, I'm very satisfied.
I used the Xiaomi debloater tool... Are there additional methods to de-bloat the phone a bit more?

I knew that since my Windows Mobile times. First thing I did was removing the fancy things and unnecessary apps. People reported MIUI as very aggressive when it comes to battery saving, and I found it to be true (if I'm not missing anything).
