"sleeping" CPU cores...anyone else notice this? - Moto Z Force Questions & Answers

Last night I was just messing around and looking at some things trying to figure out the issues with choppy scrolling on our phones since the update and was checking out CPU usage and noticed something interesting...
I saw that two of the CPU cores were being reported as "sleeping" with no activity registered on them...even after running a benchmark there was no activity shown...
A reboot "fixed" the issue and all 4 cores were reporting activity...but then after going to bed, and waking up this morning it is back to the same...I attached a couple of screenshots to show what I'm seeing. You can see in the second picture the "history" clearly shows where the two cores went to sleep...

Isn't the 820 a big/little quad core? You'll only have 2 active at one time.

You can clearly see here...that after rebooting the phone...all 4 cores will register as active for a time...
Or here

I was wrong. The SD820 is not big/little it's asymmetrical.
With that said I'm running Geekbench in splitscreen and the highspeed cores are not showing as active.
Going to reboot and try again. If the score is significantly higher.

My AnTuTu scores don't seem to be significantly lower when the cores are "sleeping" maybe 1000 points give or take (on total scores of 150,000+ so not significant) but it's still odd for all of these apps to be having such a hard time accurately reporting the activity on such a popular chipset ya know?

I have noticed the same phenomenon on Xperia XZ (Snapdragon 820 also) after Nougat update. Have not done any benchmarking though.

Whats the path to get to the screenshots you posted???? Or is it an app????

You can also see the utilization is much less. Maybe it's automatic that they wake or sleep based on demand?

I've noticed this too. Have opened up games and many other apps but cant seem to get those 2 cores "awake".

Here's an interesting app I stumbled across: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mediatek.multicoreobserver
With the last update its definitely not turning off any cores. All 4 are staying active and scaling at all times.

CPU under clock

Here's something I noticed while testing my phone in smart bench. I dialed my CPU down to 816mhz and 912mhz and look at these scores

Then I set it back to 1ghz and look at the scores.
Doesn't make sense. We need 2.3(2.4) to truely run out dual core at its best.
But thats just my 2 cents

strange..!!
I find I get better scores on smartbench when I have tons of apps running and less free ram, how odd is that???
These benchmark tools are bogus. In the end what really matters is your experience, do you feel it fast? So it's fast...

Are you running single tests or multiple?
I've noticed the same results and thought it quite strange and I ran multiple tests. Its interesting also that the more tests you run the better the scores get until a certain amount of times, around 6 or so on mine, that the scores drop dramatically to a lower score than the first run score.

Benchmarks need to be repeatable for them to be reliable. Any outfit worth its salt does benchmarks on a freshly installed system with all unnecessary services disabled and nothing running etc.
Otherwise you're going to get some unseen interaction that will screw with your benchmark result.

Ran multiple test to make sure the results were consistent and always got the same results

Remember all kinds of stuff comes into factor. Heat from multiple tests, heat from charging, heat from pocket, rebooting before test, less apps being used, data turned off... and tons more. You cant really compare tests back too back, you must run tons of them with the same variables and take a median not a mean.

CPU-z.. questions

Does CPU-z report correct core useage?
Its saying my 3rd and 4th cores are not in use.. I run a game and switch the cpu-z and still says that...

core usage it reports right. then that game doesnt intensively use your cpu. it can also be the kernel that you are using, and how it works(if you are rooted).
Custom kernel?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
using franco.kernel running PA rom
then its probably the kernel and how it runs(or how its set up). if your game isnt suffering, i wouldnt worry about it.
Thanx for the help...
in the franco.kernel app, cores 3&4 does shows its offline.. I just cant find a setting or how to enable those cores..
Why does ur say Snapdragon 600?? :s .. Sorry but is Pro and 600 the same processor? :s

Its called hotplugging. The kernel offlines the cores when its not necessary. It onlines cores 3,4 when needed.
If you want to have 4 cores on at all times, then use his app to change the load. Not necessary to have all 4 on though, hotplugging is for battery purposes.

Evaluating ANTUTU 5, impressions so far.

I was selected to test out an Alpha version of ANTUTU 5, here are my impressions so far. It is markedly longer than previously. There are new CPU tests, including Single Thread Integer, Single Thread Floating Point, refined 2D tests, which are now performed in landscape, and an all new 3D test Project Anarchy, which is a Forrest Scene. Pretty Cool. Cant wait for the final project.

I am testing it too and I've noticed something but I am not sure if it's related to Antutu. When it goes to CPU Interger Test or Float point test, all cores go to 100% usage except for CORE1. For some reason, it stays at 1-10%. Maybe it's the kernel. I am using ElementalX

I think you can't. I am using InsertCoin Rom to check CPU Usage. Thanks anyway!

I have no idea how you guys are getting a such a high score, im stock rooted but only can get around 41500 and that's only after updated the gpu drivers

[q] antutu scores after incremental update?

HI,
Before the update, i used to get 31000+ Antutu scores.
After the update, the scores do not even reach 27000.
Has any one noticed , or is it only me?
If this is correct, what has gone wrong?
I hope it is not like the REDMI 1S, where the update just reduced the CPU speeds to overcome the overheating issue.

mine actually increased  before update it was around 31100, after update i got 32207
first time i got a low score around 27000, when you do benchmark test make sure your device is not charging.

Hey aashking, I have a request for you. Can u put the screenshot of antutu benchmark running in its initial phase and simultaneously checking tha core clocks on trickster mod or cpuz. I actually want to know what is the max clock speed our 615 hits when it stressed(running antutu). And what scheduler and governor u are using. Can u do it n post the screens here? It's a humble request sir, thankyou.

@sauravdante i did that test and got these results
CPU 0 to 3 cores reaches the max of 1497 MHz
CPU 4 to 8 cores reaches the max of 998 MHz
Thanks,

4 cores allways stopped, what's going on?

I installed CPU-Z and it shows 4 cores stopped. I run stress tests the CPU and always says the same.
What's going on?

Everyone have this problem?
Yes. This is a well-documented problem on any phones with SD810 chipset. The phone will stop 2 big clusters when the temperature is high enough.

I answered your question. Not sure what the issue is.
The CPU throttles very aggressively when subjected to heavy loads due to heat. This was a known issue with the chip for months before they decided to use it. They did they best they could with it but it still throttles aggressively.
It's strange, i didn't load too much the phone and here is winter (45° F)
I guess, Time to root and flash?

This statement is untrue and deceptive. It's not whether N or MM causing the issue, but it's basically how Android aggressively throttles the SD810 chip, which has been known for generating a lot of heat. Just watch an HD movie or two, or play Modern Combat 4 for 15 minutes while charging and you'll see. This thread serves absolutely no purpose but demonstrating OP's lack of knowledge and research. A very quick Google search (SD810 thermal throttling) is enough to reveal the throttling problem.

I back to Marshmallow, i tested the device, with stress tools, 3d games and other apps. The 8 cores on Marshmallow never stopped, and with the latest Android N preview the nexus 6p allways had the problem.
You are talking without knowing.
Fyi
It's an Android N bug
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=210535
Maybe the cores are working fine and it's cpu-z that's not detecting them, you can't trust 3rd party apps on N. I haven't noticed any performance issues as compared to M.
