Can we use Magisk on this device to do something cool? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

To be honest, I dont really know 100% how this works or what it is capable of but i thought it was interesting. I saw it might be possible on pixel so i guess its nougat compatible. Im going to learn more but here is the thread.

I asked but someone delivered an answer saying no because : locked bootloader. Here's what I got. I have Unlocked boot loader, I removed SuperSu from one from and flashed the magisk zips and installed the apk. The zips flash fine, however, its the APK that force closes for me every time. So as far as I know it works, aside from the apk not showing. Also someone has magisk working currently but I haven't heard back from the fellow.

Thanks for the info. It seems pretty awesome so i hope we figure it out.

You guys will probably rage on me but...

... Ive had my G4 for some time now on stock MM but was encountering some minor heat issues, i decided to book up the courage to downgrade and root.
Now, im not the most experianced in rooting, i useually count on programs that do it for me, ive never pushed, injected, fake OTA etc. Before. Yes i was scared.
I finally did it all sucessfully yesterday but the only problem is, i feel abit dirty.. Thats the only way i can explain it!
Its strange, i enjoyed stock but i love root access.
Anybody else had this feeling, with any of their phones?
Btw, im now on H815 SEA (Singapore) LP
Yep it's normal, you're gonna learn to love the feeling and you soon could not live without it.
You see, now "TheRoot has you" and there's no escape. Soon you'll be diagnose with ORD (http://www.xda-developers.com/do-you-have-obsessive-rom-updating-disorder-ord/) and you're gonna try and root every device you see.
Welcome to the club
Haha, don't get me wrong I've been rooting for years but I did really enjoy being on stock. Once I get more organised I should feel a bit better.

Its good when you root , you can make your phone look cool...
I did the same thing yesterday. The phone is so much better now. I never used any feature of M anyway. I even installed xposed framework, only did 2-3 things to improve my usage.

You don't need an unlocked bootloader to install Xposed.
Isn't it quite risky though? I am a noob at this stuff. I'm quite impressed I'm able to use my phone after pushing a rooted image onto my phone

I did not read anywhere that it was risky. My first time doing it with flash fire 0.24.
I have a locked bootloader.
Only scary part is your screen being off and you device seeming dead for 15min. It's normal though.
If you decide to do it the version of Flash fire must be 0.24 and you need SDK22 arm64 of exposed framework. I installed SDK21 (its for Android 5.0) first time I did which is wrong for the Android version 5.1.1 and nothing bad happened, ran the uninstaller and installed SDK22.

I don't know where I read it but I remember somebody saying every time they use flash fire they crap their pants. I will install xposed but I might wait until an unofficial unlock comes out. I can live without xposed .... For now

I guess the whole part where your phone seems dead for 20min is scary, because you do not know what is happening. I do think we can still recover with LGUP if something goes wrong though I am no expert.
Like you I really hope unofficial bootloader unlock comes, but who knows if it will...

Probably. There was no information anywhere on doing it to my variant but worked just fine (H812). Just make sure you get the right version for your phone, then the same version that is rooted. Pretty sure LGUP can not brick a phone but I am pretty new to LG phones.
Rooting aint what it was. Some folks just keep fooling themselves its worth doing. Most that do it, don't need to anymore. Give it another couple of years and root will be gone mostly.

Well for me its really worth changing the awful stock DPI on the G4, you can kind of do it without root but does not work properly.
Removing ads is a bonus.
Also it's nice to have access to play with some things. (exposed modules, tweakbox, etc).
What could you do a few years ago with root that you can't now? I am pretty new to Android, so honest question.
You can't make a Nandroid without UB can you as you don't have custom recovery do you? That is the bit I would worry about having Xposed on LB,if a module crashed the ROM. I think the Xinstaller forced into bootloop on my last G4

I don't think so, but can't you fix a bootloop with LGUP?
Unless bootloop was caused by HW failure which happened a lot on older G4s from my understanding.
Xinstaller definitely caused bootloop for my G4, not the hardware problem (that came a couple weeks later) as I went to recovery and deleted module and booted fine. It was conflict with MM at the time I think.
Point being I don't think you can make Nandroid without UB. Don't know about LGUP, I guess you could yes, but lose settings media apps etc.
Yea this is why all my stuff is either backed up to the cloud or its on the media card.
I've had a rooted phone for ages through multiple devices and vendors. I recently succumbed to the curiosity and upgraded my SEA G4 to MM, losing root. I haven't had any heat issues, not ones solved by not playing games that require constant tapping on the screen anyway, and generally I've been happy with my phone on MM. The main thing I miss from when I had root is the ability for Tasker to do certain actions - like enabling/disabling location services and NFC etc.
Sure I can live with it - but getting back abilities like that has made me consider a downgrade just like the OP many times. I am resigned to the possible fact that I may never get an unlocked bootloader, and no MM root will be no surprise to me.

xposed

Can we flash xposed via twrp or flash fire ?
Do it. At your own risk.
If you do it please let us know the results and which version you flashed.
I was also wondering about Viper4Android. I could really use the boost and equalizer.
Can you either nandroid back or flash a stock image if things go south? Can you even flash zips in TWRP yet without issue? You're rolling a big pair if you can't do either.
Is there an xposed for Nougat? Rumor says no. Rumor confirmed.

To be honest, there's really not much benefit at all to rooting yet. Yet people spend hours upon hours of aggravation trying to do so, with many of them that shouldn't be anywhere near an ADB command.
It's the same story with every new phone. The "root commandos."
Xposed isn't working for Nougat I thought

It's Working Now. Don't Use Material Xposed Installer. Use The official Xposed Installer APK which is 3.1.2 Currently. Otherwise None Of The Modules Will Work.

I was just thinking the same thing... i've almost always rooted and modified my phones.. but I think it was usually for a specific purpose or need..
the older phones I had were running touchwiz.. which i HATED to use.. so was so eager to get ROM with more of a stock android..
Or how I would love having some of the features of Cyanogenmod.. like "ScreenShot" or Reboot menu ... but with the V20.. it has screen shot built in beautifully..
I know it was also nice to be able to install titanium backup and be able to delete a lot of the stock bloatware .. but the V20 doesn't have much.. plus I can disable most of them...
I do wish I could find a rom that may run a little faster... I have noticed some Hiccups with this phone.. and 1 or 2 random reboots.. but honestly i'm sure if I went with custom software or modifed with Xposed.. i could see that more..
It would be interesting to see what some of the reasons why people on here have rooted the V20.

Download Xposed Installer And In Settings There Is An Installation Option, Choose Manual (This Will Save Downloaded Files So You Can Flash Manually From SD) go To The Main Screen And You Can Get Both The Official framework And The Uninstaller. I never did root my V20. I'm on the Note 8 now and can't see any benefit of rooting it, either.
I'm really fond of Android Pay. I'm pretty fond of my phone working as it should all day every day. To one degree or the other, you lose that with root. SystemUI tuner will do quite a bit of Xposed's work, and I'm not so annoyed with ads that I feel a need for Adaway.

Dl the APK, sdk24 arm64 version of xposed, and the Uninstaller. Install the APK and allow the app to install xposed through recovery. It will begin install, prompt to reboot in recovery, obviously select okay. Then it's an automatic process. Initial boot up time takes a while so be patient. Everything should be good to go after that. Good luck!
BTW I'm on h918, stock 10q.
I have YouTube adblock, boot manager, xposed torch, and stay awake for now. I feel like a nerd being excited about xposed. This is making the v20 even better!

Custom N Xposed

I found this article from March.
http://www.dexteroid.com/how-to/install-xposed-framework-on-android-nougat-7/
It claims to have a custom version of Xposed that works on some phones with Nougat.
Anyone know anything about this? Seems fishy, but I'm at work and can't download the file.
If this is BS please delete the thread.

Too risky. They would have contacted rovo if this were true su that he can add the final touches since he is the one with more experience about xposed. I wouldnt flash anything if is not in rovo's thread.
It was done on a phone with a custom rom, likely ResurrectionRemix. So it might work on a this phone with RR or Lineage, but if you read the comments on that link, no one else was able to get it to work. Not worth it.
Be happy if you're lucky enough to have root.

Is Shield Development Dead?

I just picked up a 2017 16GB Shield w/ remote and controller over the weekend. It's really cool despite the lack of full Play Store. I was really interested in flashing a custom full Android ROM but most links seem to be Dead. What do you guys recommend? Perhaps someone who is running full Play Store can chime in here and let me what you did. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I did see this. Looks very good but does everything work? I was skimming through the thread, and this may have been a comment from a long time ago, but mentioned that WiFi wasn't working. That would be a critical bug if that was the case. But if most of the kinks are gone by now I'm willing to try. I've heard great things about Linage OS on phones. I was actually wondering if simply rooting stock ROM and tweaking the build prop would allow full Play Store. There's got to be a way to trick it. I'll have to do some more research.

To be honest, the more I play with the stock system the more I like it. It's certainly stable so you got to give credit where credit is due. Thanks for the link. I did actually stubble upon the Nougat ROM last night and downloaded the files. Im first going to root stock then replace the launcher and tweak the build prop hopefully masking it as a Shield Tablet codename sb_na_wf. Then I'm going to fastboot to TWRP and sideload the real play store and see what happens. (Fingers crossed). Not sure if anyone has tried this but that's my best guess. If it works great, if not , I guess I can stand to just sideload the apps I need. Were you able to actually flash TWRP on your Pro or do you just temp boot to it?

Trying to root, stuck at the first hurdle

Hi guys
I have a spare phone now my son upgraded, the S5 SM-G901F. I thought it wound be fun to install another software, possibly more up to date. So I first set out to root it but I haven't played around much with this sort of thing for long while.
I googled and found it seemed to be Odin to use so I downloaded 3.10. Also downloaded cf root. I went into download mode and when I plugged it in, the light in Odin lit up showing successfully connected. When I added the cf file and clicked start it went through some steps but stuck at Recovery. Img and wouldn't progress further.
I tried multiple times, tried a different cable and USB port and also Odin 3.07 and a different cf file even though I think it was the same one but from a different site. All no better.
Originally I bought it a few years back, used from a colleague. I think it was a carrier phone, EE iirc, and I had to get a code to unlock the SIM to use with mine. Maybe that also means it's software is locked?
Any help much appreciated
Thanks, marc

well to be honest, i would need to spend some time, "Googling" your model .... . I believe , your S5 is a Dev phone, meaning, it was not set up for any carrier, just for running demo's and such. IF this is true, I have no true answer for you.
Odin yes, you need that, that is true! (Believe 3.07, 3.09 and 3.10 work the best for these phones. Had tried a very newer version, several month back, and it did not do the job.. something like 3.14 or 16)
I recommend going to Sam Mobile, and run your model # through them. They will give you all the info about your model and possibly the latest firmware for it.
Sorry that I can not give you all that you are needing. I just don't know a ton about those S5 Plus models. (( I had to even look 'em up too) the plus has a slight better chip was well as graphics, but again, I dont know of any that actually work on a modern carrier like sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile , etc.)
Thanks for the reply mate.
It definitely isn't a Dev phone, my colleague definitely had it on contact from a carrier initially.
I hadn't actually realised or noticed it being a Plus model as some sites mention the Plus and some don't.
Any other help from anyone appreciated

OK, Was only going off your model # you had given.
Did check... Odin and a good copy of CF auto root... That should be that.
Then of course, get away from a really old non sucure os (6.01 MM was their last made) .
Other than those 2 pieces, you should be good to root
Not pushing, or anything but LineageOS is rather good and does run well on these!
Plus, get a monthly security injection!

Well, I would have to say NOPE!
Well only trying to keep your Q, on the top, so folks that might know, could help!
BTW, when I looked your model up, totally different CPU and GPU, which might need a different CF auto root zip, or a different one to actually work... Since hardware is different.
Just guessing on that, but, could be wrong. Rather busy at the moment, but will look up your specs again, and see if I find something for ya.
Mean time, Hopefully someone could chime in and point you towards the correct path to take...
OH
Q- What sort Recovery do you currently have? (Stock or custom (e.g. TWRP))
Might want to check for one for your phone.
I would actually start with TWRP, see what they have for ya.
( Will need Odin for this! BUT, once you have a Recovery in/on the phone, then you could use Magisk to root ot try CF and see 8f that works for you (I use Majisk) Plus add in the fact that you should make a Back up, of your current system! In case of issues, you can always jump back to Stock. )

Cheers mate. So, some progression.
Firstly i didn't have a custom recovery or root. I was getting stopped at the first hurdle.
So, i figured it had something to do with it using a carrier firmware, EE, in the UK. So i found a stock European firmware and successfully used odin to flash it. Then i flashed CF root and TWRP. All good.
So with new confidence i flashed Resurrection Remix Android 9. Although it seemed to have worked, each time i tried to complete set up, straight after imputting my gmail address, the screen was black. Not BSOD type though, if i pressed home it went back to the home screen to i just couldn't complete set up.
So i tried Lineage and that was a boot loop.
Not sure if part of the issue was Gapps but i was definitely using the correct version. ARM, Android 9, stock.
I gave up, reinstalled the stock Android marshmallow and rooted again and installed TWRP. that's where i am now.
Shame really as i fancied a more up to date OS.
Thanks, Marc

Wait, isn't what you were wanting?
Well at least you now have a Recovery installed! Now, with that of course you can now make a back up of your stock!!!
( other words,.. MAKE A BACK UP! That way, you only have to wipe the system, data, cache and BAM, in the Flash of zip, your back at square one...)
OK, not sure if you picked up a new info about LineageOS, across the pond....
But
They ran into some issues, (soon and hopefully sooner, it will be fixed). Now, after that, they will be dropping LineageOS 17.1 Official!! Yes, for Galaxy S5 too
So, keep an eye out for that, cause am in same Boat, waiting for the Official release.
( personal, I run LineageOS, Magisk (Root and some goodies.. Unfortunately I do tend to add Ggogle, but like Pico, nothing larger. Do flash a kernel also. That said, rather stable, and most everything works) at least for me.... Just waiting for Official 17.1 to roll out! (like just about anyone left that has these phones...)
