Here are just some general files that some of you guys might want, had no hassle at all installing all of them onto my Samsung Galaxy S3 as I tested them all before posting. I put the ZIP file together after doing some customizations to my phone and just after having a mess around with them. I wanted to post this for you guys because I know the files really were pretty useful to me so might be useful to you all as well. Enjoy guys!
BEFORE YOU READ ON / DOWNLOAD PLEASE NOT THAT THESE FILES DO NOT BELONG TO ME AND I HAVE NOT CREATED THE FILES. I TAKE NO RIGHTS OVER THESE FILES.
The download includes the following files and their formats.
TAR Files:
CWM 6.0.4.4 I9300.tar,
CF Root SGS3 v6.2.tar.
ZIP Files:
SR4 SuperSU v2.78.zip,
SlimKat 4.4.4 Build.zip,
Odin 1.85.zip.
RAR Files:

Forgot to include in the OP that you will need to install Gapps ( I did not include Gapps download for either ROMs )
Cwm is very outdated. For newer custom ROMs, twrp is required.

1. Install acer recovery installer from market. This apk is free.
2. Keep with you the .zip or .image file of recovery which you want to install and place it in sd card.
3. Run the apk and select install from sd card.
4. If apk do not detect .zip file in your sd card than extract recovery.image from that file and store it in sd card.

You can get custom recovery files from tegraowners.com or any other custom recovery in development section.

The real answer is if you have ICS, to install a custom recover or custom kernel you must have an unlocked bootloader.
The following resources are related to the new bootloader, a quick read of the OPs of the first two are highly recommended, even if you install with the third link. (This is to have a highlevel idea of what you are changing on your device, as it will help you find what you need to look closer at in future if something goes wrong, or possibly prevent a problem in the first case)
bootloader thread
civato's guide
Afterota tool (windows users bootloader install tool)
If you already have the unlocked bootloader installed, but can't boot into recovery:
This is likely because you have a stock ICS rom overwritting recovery with the stock recovery in every boot; either use fastboot or (if you have root) a program such as acer recovery installer to force the install of a recovery and immediately reboot into it. (Most bootloader installers will also install a recovery that you can immediately boot into)
Once in recovery you can backup/restore/or install a rom modified to prevent the overwrite of recovery. (More advanced users can stop this from adb by removing some files)
Personally I use a lightly modified version of the stock rom you are using now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661492
it ought to be safe to do a no wipe update to that and receive a more expected environment with a custom recovery, optional custom OC kernel, and busybox support.
However if you explore the dev section, many other (both more and less modified) versions of ICS roms exist. Themed and otherwise. So feel free to explore.

Hi,
I have a small question. I own a Canadian Samsung 4 SGH-i337m, after reading the main guide for running other carrier rom on this address
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295557
As the guide mention that I didn't need the loki kernel and I could use my carrier kernel.
I used to backup my kernel with SGS kernel flasher to do the job, but it's not working for s4.
I wanted to backup my stock kernel and apply it after the installation of a cursom rom and apply it through TWRP. As I understood it, kernel is the boot.img, and I read somewhere that the way to create this is to copy the boot.img + copy the /sytem/lib/modules files. If I look to the file prepared by iB4STiD in the file MDOB-I337M-VMK6-FIX-4.1 present here, it seems that it's the case.
There is still flashify as a solution but you can't use the file into recovery.
Does someone know how to do it, or point me out where to find a guide where I can do what I want.
thanks in advance,

What type of ROM are you using? You have to be using a compatible kernel. AOSP ROM's won't work with a stock kernel, and you can't cross Android version between system and kernel. Using any custom kernel developed for your phone with this guide will work okay however.
Thank you for your answer.
in order to answer your question I was trying to flash the hyperdrive to my phone with compatibility pack. But after reboot I go back directly to download mode. So I figured that it was the boot partition that wasn't adapted to my phone.
So yes, I understand that if you flash a rom based on code as cyanogenmod you will need a custom kernel. but for a rom that is based on stock as hyperdrive rom, unless I'm mistaken, I would imagine that the stock kernel should work.:cyclops:
Is there a way to back it up?

My best guess is find out which partition it is and use the dd command OR download the ODIN of your firmware version and extract the boot.img. However, it would be easier to just use a custom kernel designed for your phone as if you back it up like that you either have to make it into a flashable zip or use heimdall to restore it every time.
Sent from Black<3's I337 running Foxhound ROM
Thanks for your answer.
That's weird as a nandroid is doing the job, that is hard to find how to backup a kernel.
anyway, I guess my best chance is to download a custom kernel and apply it after installation of the cutom rom. At first boot re apply a backup kernel with an app as flashify.
thanks youpi
i updated cm-11 nightly on my sprint galaxy note 3. before i did that, i had twrp recovery. now it has cwm based recovery. i want twrp back. i've tried to flash zips and images and tar files all kinds of ways, even using odin on my laptop. nothing is working. bear in mind, i am new to this root gig, but i think i am following directions very carefully when i tweak stuff. what should i do?
Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum for Note 3.
Stand by
I successfully flashed CM11 on to my LG G Pad 8.3 without issue so I've done this before (but most of the downloads had Batch files to automate things) but want to still be sure of the procedure.
My I9505 was recently upgraded OTA to Android 5.0.1 along with Samsung's TouchWiz. Hopefully this won't complicate matters.

Install Recovery: Is TWRP Recovery v2.8.7.0 the best Recovery to use?
The Optimized CM12.1 thread recommends TWRP 2.8.7.0 but the download doesn't contain a batch file to run?
Reboot to TWRP --> Backup my existing ROM image then choose the Wipe option
Install the Optimized CM12.1 ROM then GAPPS from SD Card
Related questions about the Optimized CM12.1 ROM and GAPPS please:
Wouldn't a regular CM12.1 Nightly for the I9505 be better than the Optimized CM12.1 ROM? The Optimized CM12.1 ROM looks to be older (2015-06-16), or am I splitting hairs over a few days? Thanks
The Optimized CM12.1 thread offers a link to download GAPPS for Lolilpop 5.1. Is this better to use than the one in the GAPPS for Lollipop 5.1 here (ARM download): http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
Is the TWRP Manager on Google Play the best/recommended way to install TWRP 2.8.7.0? -

Thanks again.
Regarding your steps...
1, 2: Cyanogenmod is pre-rooted, and the stock recovery images are readily available, thus these steps waste time.
3. Yes.
4. Yes. You'll use Odin to flash the recovery, thus no batch file.
5, 6: Yes.
As to your other questions...
1. You need to decide which you want more. Is having a more current build more important than the optimizations? Regardless of the final choice both install in essentially the same fashion.
2. The GApps in the thread is more up-to-date than the official download.
Finally, TWRP Manager stopped working properly some time ago and really isn't necessary. Download the image from the Optimized CM12.1 thread and install it using Odin.

Firstly thanks for the detailed reply.
I remember that from installing CM on my tablet but presumably you still need to Root the S4 to be able to install CM?

A few more questions please:
1. So when you run Odin it will ask for the location of the TWRP Recovery v2.8.7.0 folder?
2. Is this the best place to get Odin? - http://odindownload.com/
3. That link says I need "ADB & FASTBOOT TOOLS", where do I get these for the S4?

Oh great thanks. I noticed it was a smaller download. Is there much missing from it over the official one?
Thanks again Strephon.
1, 2: No. You only need to flash the recovery through Odin to be able to install Cyanogenmod.
2. I believe the apps that all can be downloaded from the Play Store are missing, which is a good thing.
4: You need to input the location of TWRP on your hard drive. Search on XDA for the most current version of Odin (3.10.6) and ignore that site's comment about ADB & Fastboot Tools. Simply download Samsung's drivers off their website and install them. As an alternative, you can install Kies, but make sure Kies isn't running when you run Odin.

Great. Thanks for the further help. I'm nearly there, just a few more questions please:
Do I need to enable USB Debugging?
Running Odin and it's unclear what to do next? I presume these instructions under "Odin Install Method (No Root Required)" are correct? - https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxys4internationalqualcomm.html
Those instructions say to press the PDA button, there is no PDA button. Do I press the AP button instead?
In Odin options is it safe to leave "F. Reset Time ticked"? It looks like it is.
The TWRP 2.8.7.0 in the Optimized CM12.1 thread only offers a ZIP file and the link here only offers an IMG file: https://dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/. But it looks like Odin needs a TAR file. Any ideas?
I presume this (Micro) GAPPS is as good to install as the GAPPS link in the Optimized CM12.1 thread (it's newer, just want to be sure it's compatible)? - http://opengapps.org/
Finally, is it a good idea/recommended to convert to F2FS?
Googling and it's unclear if I want "F. Reset Time" ticked or I should be converting to "F2FS", so I thought I should be sure first. Great I already have Kies installed.
Thanks again. I'm pretty close to installing CM12.1 now.
It won't hurt, but in download mode it shouldn't be needed.
Yes.
The instructions assumed an older version of Odin. Press the AP button.
If Odin fires up with it enabled by default, I'd leave it as is.
Grab the 2.8.7.0 TAR from https://dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/ and install it through Odin. Afterward, you can change over to the F2FS-compatible version using the upgrade instructions given on the twrp.me install page.
It should be compatible, but you may have better luck using the version in the thread.
F2FS is totally optional. I personally don't use it.
Thanks for the quick reply again. There is no 2.8.7.0 TAR file in that link, just a 2.8.6.0 TAR file .
* I presume I should install 2.8.6.0 TAR then install the 2.8.7.0 IMG file on top from inside TWRP?
* OR better yet install 2.8.6.0 TAR using Odin then install 2.8.7.0-F2FS ZIP from inside the TWRP 2.8.6.0 Recovery itself? I presume I use the same Install option I do to install CM2.1 itself?
I didn't look carefully at the page. Sorry. But yes, you can grab the 2.8.6.0.tar, install it, then install either of the 2.8.7.0 images afterward in TWRP.
Thanks Strephon Alkhalikoi. I finally got around to doing this last night and it went without a hitch. I got a pit error using Odin but a quick Google said to plug the USB cable direct into the PC.

Flash Magisk (stable)
6. TWRP - Multi-Disabler Firmware
7. Reboot TWRP - Flash Magisk (stable)
or Patching Boot Image
This is required only If you want to root device without installing custom recovery (TWRP).
Here is Patched kernel to root
Unzip the boot.img from AP and copy the file to your device.
Press the Install button in the Magisk card
Choose “Select and Patch a File” in method, and select the stock boot image
Magisk Manager will patch the image to [Internal Storage]/Download/magisk_patched.img.
Now you will have Magisk_patched.img file in download folder - Copy that file to PC.
Rename that magisk_patched.img to boot.img (Name must be exact same).
Make sure your PC have 7-zip installed, If not get and install it.
Right click on boot.img and select 7zip - select "add to archive" - select archieve format as 'tar' - and name it Patched_Kernel (it will be like Patched_Kernal.tar). Don't keep space in name. This will create a Odin flashable patched kernel
Reboot to download mode. Open Odin on your PC, and flash Patched_Kernal.tar as AP.
Reboot and Done !

I have a question. Does the file "(twrp-z3s-3.5.0_10-A11_x_ianmacd.img) containing TWRP + patched vbmeta.im"g given in 1 post match the newest DUBA?
I already know because I checked. It is possible that I used the latest TWRP IMcd and vbmet from the Beyond Rom thread. I have packed both of these files into a .tar file and it works for DUBA.
