Is it worth to update from G5? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Is it worth to update from G5?

it's worth to upgrade only if music is important to you, otherwise if having an hifi dac is not that crucial i would advise against.
camera is the same, display is bigger but i don't know if you are looking for a bigger screen. second oled screen is nice but can't be the only reason why you're upgrade to v20
so... unless you're very into music (which i suspect you aren't, otherwise v20 would be a no brainer) don't turn in your g5 for v20

If a larger display is desired, along w/the 2nd display, which is cool & more useful than some bloggers would lead you to believe.
I won't speak for the HI-FI DAC,as I primarily use Bluetooth.
Since you already have the B&O Module on your G5,I'd omit audio considerations from the equation.
Sooo,we're back to the display:
If extra real estate/ticker display are intriguing, get it,YOLO.
Otherwise, save your $$$,as all other items are virtually the same, especially once you're upgraded to Android 7.0

As someone who came from the g5 only because the black friday deal of 4 bucks a month with trade in, i would say base your whole decision on screen size. I normally dont like big screens but it is nice. I was also on my 4th G5 due to the Gps issue.
The music sounds better on the speaker but everything else is just about the same. I dont care about hi fi dac cause i use Bluetooth

G4 vs. V10: DAC Comparison

According to all press releases, the V10 is being offered with a better DAC:
http://www.androidcentral.com/hands-lg-v10-newer-bigger-smartphone-family
This kind of leaves me a little jaded as I feel the DAC/HP output of the G4 to be pretty bad. In fact, it's the weakest aspect of the phone for me.
Has anyone being able to compare the two?

I think no one has had the chance yet. But V10 will cost a lot more.
I just hope the video controls get transferred to the G4. 3 gigs of RAM should be more than enough for that!
Every new phone will be better in something.
I personally find the speaker and the headphones sound pretty decent coming from LG G2.
But let us not forget that headphones are important too. I have couple pairs of headphones. And the experience with everyone is different.
I don't trust dac specs. If i like what i hear then it's good for me.

Is it worth buying this phone only for the audio?? And a few more questions

Hi. My note 4 is making me insane with all the lag and etc and it's near dying! And the camera is broken(not physically)
First. Please don't answer this question if you've never used an iPhone/nexus
Does it lag(if you had v10 or g5)? People told me no about Samsung s7 and note 7 but they do lag! They told me no about note 4 too but it's laggier than a 10 year old computer with a failing hdd. The keyboard is insane
Second: does the DAC ACTUALLY make a difference? Specially for a half-avarage person. I'm not an audiophile but I do care about Audio quality. But for example on mynote 4 I can't tell the difference between flac and mp3 (@320kbps).
But I do hear a difference Between 120kbps and flac with my Sennheiser cx 1.00 on some songs. I currently don't have any good headphones but I'm going to buy audio Technica 500x or m40x
Also as I listen to music on low volume I don't need an AMP or anything. Heck I can tell the name of the song that's playing on the tv o on the background of a movie while I'm in my room listening to music with headphones xD
And there's no background noise on my note 4. Or my PC! I don't understand why people complain about noise on internal DACs
I heard on somewhere that the v10 it barely makes a difference in Audio other than high volume
Third: how is LG at delivering software updates? Is LG fast? Samsung is awful at update! Specially when they have 1000 versions of the same phone
My other choices are iPhone 7+ or Pixel xl (I'll buy iPhone as a last resort as I don't likr apple and IOS although it's smooth)

I agree about the Note 4 lag, as I have a Developer Edition of the phone. Even though I can wipe it and install a custom ROM, within a month it is acting slow and lagy. Im always having to click Close all open app.
When I tried out the Note 7 a few times in the store, I wasn't really impressed with it, and not big on the curved screen.
So I am also hold hope that the V20 will be a good upgrade (despite it will probably never get root access).
I'm interested in it for the camera, audio quality, notification display, and Android 7. As a previous owner of a Note 2 & 3, I have yet to see Samsung release updates in a timely manner.
The only thing I wish the V20 had was an AMOLED display, as I've really gotten use to those over the years.

Well according to YouTube it's fast and awesome!
But why wouldn't it get root? I personally find less and less reason to root as android gets better. I didn't even bother rooting my note 4 after an OTA.
Oh and I'm actually glad they didn't use amoled. All the AMOLEDs I've seen even at maximum brightness kins of leave a tail or lag at darks. It's like when I swipe in rhe gallery or scroll or watch movies etc. The blacks kind of leave a purpleish tint behind. It's a million times less than my s4 but still pretty anoyying (I sold my s4 and bought a Nexus 4 afterwards. Best decision I ever made)
Btw I also hope that they come with the earbuds in my country if not I would be very heartbroken and I would have to buy a headphone my self ( an 80$ headphone costs 185~$ in my country. No idea why headphones are so expensive)
i am currently using note 5 and i am ready to change my phone very very tired of deleting or transferring stuff because of the storage .The new V20 will be good specially with the audio but same thing as mentioned up i don't have good headphone i might go for Sony's MDR-100ABN but at the moment i don't care about the audio capabilities. The only thing is i like my phone to be rooted but i am worried about is the locked bootloader and the dead development section so i guess Pixel XL will be a safer option for me but again storage will be an issue for me.
Well. To me, the best smartphone Samsung has ever came up with is the Samsung Galaxy s5, the others are CR*P ... I still using my S5 but i think it is time to move on and LG v20 seems like a perfect candidate. I also have a LG G3 and it is even faster than my Galaxy s5. So, why wouldnt i love the V20 (that if it doesnt come with any issues of course lol). I do like AMOLED screen but i hate burn-in image, and i have developed burn in image on all my samsungs (s2, s3, s4 s5, note 2, note 3, and note 4) , yet with the G2, G3, G4, G5 and V10 I have never had burn in image. so i can sacrifice the pure black and the extreme contrast as long as i dont get burn in image. LOL AMOLED screens are way more expensive than IPS screens.
Anyway, i do believe that the V20 could be a great option. But i will buy it after 2 month of release, since this time i only have one chance to buy the phone. I willl wait to see if there will be root, roms and other developments, and no less important, if it comes with any major issues .

I wad just taking another look at Motorola and moto z force sounds amazing!
Shatterproof display? Hot swappable battery? Maybe later a dac/amp mod!
Too sad that the mod acts as a power bank(afaik 80% wasted as heat and it just wears the unreplaceable internal battery further)
And I won't be able to buy a phone after a year. I assume it will take a year or a year and a half(I can handle 1.5years? Maybe) for it to lose so much capacity that I'll have to hug the wall! My note 4 has 2h SoT after 1.5 years but it's easily replaceable
I don't think there's a reason behind unreplaceable battery other than making us pay more. I mean come on lg does it good! So did note 4 and htc sensation(I know it's old. But it has an amazingly soft button for it to release and it's aluminum)
And how much space does a button waste?
Waterproofing however... S5 is waterproof and has a removable battery(Am I right?) But still...
I currently am using my S5 Active, have been for awhile. I actually bought it off eBay for $200 in brand new condition. This guy is definitely waterproof and has taken more than a dozen drops that i would consider iPhone screen shattering drops - still no scratches on my screen. Battery has been killing me recently though, can't last more than half a day (granted, I am texting and using fb messenger a lot). But other issues such as lag and random freezes have been occurring much more often now. But the nice thing is I have it rooted.
So I could care less about having a locked bootloader, but having a root for the V20 would be amazing. Still- I will be buying the v20 whether it is going to have a locked/unlocked bootloader and even if it won't have a root method. I think this phone is definitely more than a worthy upgrade especially from an S5.
does the DAC only work with the stock music player? what happens when using other music players or soundcloud, youtube,....?
On V10 the dac worked on all audio programs after MM update

ok thanks. i asked because on the Axon 7 it wasn´t so, right?
Not sure with the Axon.
There's an high impedance mode too but it depends on your headphones, I remember for the V10 I bought a little cable that automatically enabled high impedance on any headphones. The volume was amazing

NO! You will regret buying a LG phone! No root, no bootloader unlock and no custom ROM..You will be glad if it doesn't bootloop 6 months later..
had a g2 that was rooted and had tons of development and never boot looped... but thanks!

well the Note 4 is one of the laggiest phones I have ever had. My current S7 Edge is not what I would call laggy at all. However it is not as fast as the Nexus 6 that I had.
for LG, i had the G2, G3, and V10. I liked the G2 but did not have it long. The G3 is still in use every day, but my son has it, so not my daily driver, but when I pick it up, it does not seem laggy. The V10 was not laggy, but it drank battery juice. I had to swap a battery around 5pm every day. That got annoying.
I was also considering the Moto Z Force, since it will be super quick. But then the V20 will be bigger and have some cool features, still a toss up for me

I agree. S7E is "fast", but no way it feels as fluid as the Nexus, even just a Nexus 6. The LG phones has always been snappy for me, possibly due to the lighter skin on top.
For me, V20 has checked out almost all boxes for me. I could wish for a Samsung-like fast camera, but I can't live without the ultra wide angle now. The vibrator isn't as solid as the flagship counterpart (note, S7, iPhone 7). I would like front facing speakers, but it's not a standard feature. As with all phones, there are small things I can pick on, but for 95% of the phone, I couldn't be happier.
Back to the original question - Yes, I think it's worth it if you use it for music all the time. I can definitely hear a difference from the Quad DAC vs a normal phone or even a phone that has a wolfson DAC. I am only using some alright in ear monitor - Shure SE215 and Monster Turbine Pro.
I remember the audio on my V10 being fantastic, so I would assume the V20 will be even better
2 things that drove me nuts about the V10 and keeps me from considering the V20 is the battery life and the reception that the V10 got. I'm waiting for you all to get them in your hands and start reporting on these 2 things..
Battery is alright so far, things are still settling. Audio is fantastic!
Hi, I'm a musician and I hope I can clarify several things for you:

A good DAC will definitely improve the sound quality, no matter the source is mp3 or lossless. However you must understand that for mp3 files a good DAC is totally overkill, which means the improvement would be limited, much less than the improvement of a lossless source. On the other hand, only several technologies like Sony's DSEE HX can improve/repair the quality of lossy files to a certain level and then output as Hi-Res audio.
Using higher quality equipment most of the time makes you aware more of the audio source quality differences, so that's why there is no turning back on equipment

Yes an AMP amplifies the volume, but this is not it's only job. Every AMP has it's own acoustic characteristics and that's why there are AMPs of different price tags. An AMP also affects the tone color, spectrum balance, noise ...etc no matter you're listening at high or low volume. However if you actually always listen to music and all the outer sounds at the same time then perhaps it really doesn't matter to you.
And there's no background noise on my note 4. Or my PC! I don't understand why people complain about noise on internal DACs

If you are speaking about the V20's advertisement of 130dB signal noise ratio (SNR), then actually the "noise" here means unwanted sound only during the signal process, which normal consumers won't care about.
If you are speaking about the noises that people sometimes can hear in the headphone or speaker, they actually have so many possible causes that takes examinations to resolve them, can't simply blame internal DAC.
V20's audio features is attractive enough for me to buy, not only the playback capability but also the HD recording feature. As for casual listeners it will definitely provide better listening experience, but it's full potential can only be discovered using high quality source files and good headphones. Oh, and perhaps a nice listening environment or a noise isolating/canceling headphone
^nice write up and welcome aboard!

LG V20 Speaker Comparison

So I've had my (T-Mobile variant) V20 for a little over a day now and I can already tell it will be an easy 2-year phone. I came from a (T-mobile) G5.
Since I haven't sold my G5 yet, I decided to do a head-to-head comparison. The V20 won in every aspect except for 1 area. It lagged behind my G5's speaker.
I was shocked honestly because I just assumed LG would use the exact same speaker for the V20 as they had in the G5, or a better one.
My findings were that the G5's speaker is quite loud, open, and has a fair amount of depth and bass for a single bottom-firing speaker.
The V20 on the other hand is a tad quieter, slightly muffled (when compared to the G5), and doesn't have as much depth/music layer separation.
So if anyone else has these 2 phones and wants to confirm for me that I have a properly working V20 speaker, please compare them.
Thanks!
My V20 (H918TN) has a significantly better bottom-firing speaker than my LG G5. Both are running stock sound profiles.

HA! just let me say something that i know you wont believe but anyway i wil say it. I can put music in my LG V20, leave it inside the room with the volume to the maximum, go outside the room, the room with door closed, walk away 17 long step and i can still hear some of the music yet. I had the Galaxy s5 and i couldnt achieve that, The device that get closer to such power of the V20 is the LG G3 ( from the devices currently own of course, and the ones i have owned too). I even went to the bathroom and could still hear it LOL the bathroom is 12 long steps away and it is an extra door added

Wow! I do believe you, I can do that with my G5, but for some reason not my V20. I wonder if it has to do with the T-Mobile variant? Or maybe I have a bad unit...

probably a bad unit. I have listened to spotify and pandora music since 2011, and none of the devices i have tried have sounded like this
I have to say mine, which is also the T-Mobile variant is also on the more quiet side. I have to keep it about 75% in order to listen using YouTube for example.
Well I decided to hop on over to my local T-Mobile and compare the speaker on the floor model V20 with mine and they sound the same, volume and all. So I guess it's not defective? Maybe I'll just wait for root and boost the speaker volume
I can't help you - but wanted to say coming from a long run with samsung phones, note 3, 4 and 7 - the speaker in this V20 is very adequate. And the sound through the headphone jack - AMAZING. I will never settle for a crappy sounding phone again. Samsung should be listening.
I have the same problem. When i received a call until i just swap cards from G5 i thought that volume is completely down or it's just bugged ringtone. After that i realized that sound is unbelievable terrible quality and very quiet. Comparing to G5 which had amazing sound quality, coming to this ****ty quality i am just not sure that i want to keep the phone. I become pissed off with ****ty quality every time i receive a call.
Compared to my old nexus 6p
Speaker sound with v20 is bad. Really bad
Same experience comparing my V20 to my G3.
G3 sounds more cleaner. I think it has to do with the way the speaker is not flushed to the body of the phone resulting a not so rich sound. It definitely has the power though. Just a bad design.
I just got mine 3 days ago and my speacker is loud better than my note 3

Nexus 6P has dual front facing speakers. Of course it's not going to compare.
Coming from many years with Samsung Note 3, 4 & 7 - the speaker on the V20 is very impressive as long as your not blocking it with your hand or finger.
I'll never buy another Samsung phone unless they do something with the horrible sound. Even with a good set of headphones plugged in the Samsungs sound like crap compared to any HTC phone or the V20.

Found the same thing. I am shocked by the speaker of V20 that is not any better than G5. I bought V20 to have quad dac experience but when it comes to speaker it makes me a bit disappoint

How does headphone sound of G6 (version without DAC) compares to G3, OP5T and Mi6.

I was using LG G3 for exactly 2 years, the performance and sound on it was completly fine for me, but something broke inside it (I got almos all the money back from guarantee so + for LG) and now I'm thinking about buying new phone. Mostly I would want to buy LG G6 as its quite cheap for flagship and I really like the design etc... but also I consider buying OnePlus 5t or Xiaomi Mi6. I heard that European (or at least version what Ill be buying) of G6 doesnt have that Q DAC converter and the sound isnt that great. I just want to know how does headphone sound of G6 compares to G3 and also to OP5T and Mi6.
If it sound the same or a little better than G3 it ll be fine for me, I just want to make sure it doesnt sound worse. Also I would want to know how the other phones compare music wise to G6. I know they have better performance and if they sound much better I might choose them even that I like design and screen of G6.
I've got European H870 with DAC enabled on Fulmics rom. I threw away my stock LG headphones and bought Yamaha EPH100 and the sound quality is very good. You have to tweak it a little bit in V4A or Poweramp tho.

Nope, the h870 doesn't have a quad-DAC, but it still sounds better than 90% of the high-end smartphones released last year, like, it sounds better than the s8 plus, in my opinion.
And nope, it can't be enabled with root or anything, it's just a piece of hardware. But, for sure, it'll sound better than your beloved G3

Thats good I think I ll buy G6 then!
No worries for audiophiles and LG G6 without quad DAC. It can drive headphones of higher impedance. Dynamic range is the same as HTC 10 and AMP is a bit weaker. Great clarity and crispy highs. :good:
Btw here is the great review about G6 audio quality.

Btw here is the great review about G6 audio quality.

Ah now I get it, after watching review, all g6 have DAC but only G6 in asia have quad-DAC
Yes, and G6 without quad DAC is great also.
All phone has DAC....
So my exp.H870 Eu Without sabre Quad dac...Bad weak ,sound overcompressed usless ....
Now with [email protected] g5 DAC/AMP it's more than ok! UAPP +B&O+ Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro(80 OHM)Awsome!
Last week I measured the eu g6 (h870) headphone output with a program called RightMark Audio Analyzer and an EMU 0404 USB soundcard. Unfortunately I can't post pictures or links because I don't have enough post. (?) If someone PM me a contact i can send the data. By the way the results are good. My UE triple-fi 10 sound decent with the phone. I think its struggles driving the mid/high impedance headphones.
hi iam thinking of moving to this phone after my lg v20 bricked on me and i was also wondering about the lg g6 with NO dac version..how loud does it get as alot of smatphones failt o drive volume up loud enough to my liking. i know it wont comapre tot he v20 but is the volume output far off on the lg g6? thanks

Should I buy a LG G6?

Hi All
Currently have a Samsung S7 edge and considering getting a LG G6.
Does anyone recommend this?
I got lg g6, but i think i make mistake i should have bought oneplus 5
I do not think it's relevant to change from s7 edge to g6, there is very little difference, in raw performance and in photos it's the same, just the design and screen format that changes.
Even if I much prefer the g6, in your place I will stay with the s7 and I will wait for the new products to come..
For what its worth, i own a g6 currently, im planning on swichting to OnePlus as soon as 6 comes out.. Ill recommend u the same
It could be a good idea. Just depends on what do you expect from a phone, at what price you would pay for it.
I prefer the G6 mostly because:
Design.
Doesn´t have Touchwiz.
Probably more resistant.
Why are you considering the G6 over the S7?
I can't recommend LG G6, but if you'll decide to buy one - you could buy it from me, I'd be glad to get rid of it
Thanks for your replies. To be Honest the urge to change is probably due to the novelty has worn off. Really want a good camera bottom line.
In that case you do not want the G6, the camera is mediocre at best and the native app is very poor for quality on auto setting.

Oh ok, seems to get reviews generally. I did worry about the fact that LG does not update their software regularly . I think the front camera doesnt look too good either , but then I dont take alot of selfies
Maybe my S7 Edge will get Oreo soon , that will keep me distractedted for a little while!
I think I could get around £200 for my S7 (maybe more as its pristine) so I would expect to shell out around £300 to £350 for my next phone ....any suggestions?

I own the G6 ever since it came out. Everything about it is good except for the front camera. I've played with the settings and photos are sh-crap. This is my first and last LG phone until they make something better. (seriously, a 5 MP front camera?)

I'm lost on this opinion.
LG G6 is now around $400 in USA, used or refurbished go even cheaper, like $250. There aren't many phones out there in this price range with a better camera.
