When mucking about with firmwares and such, it's always nice to know that you can revert back to the original line of firmwares should there be a problem. It's now possible (100% restoration is only possible for regions that has had an official update already).
Special thanks to Zangieff, whose finding made this hack possible.
You can actually use this hack to get any official firmware update available on Kies installed on your phone regardless of your phones region (assuming you have the correct data available).
Check the replies for an appropriate region with code. If you can't find one, it's likely not discovered yet (or has not had any kind of upgrade by Kies).
1) Start Kies. Start the upgrade software and make sure the upgrade software detects your phone properly.
2) If your preferred region requires you to have test mode ON, press CTRL-ALT-U-P. You should get a popup window stating that Test mode is ON. (Test mode is disabled in the most recent Kies versions, as far as I know it's also unused, so there's no real benefit in downgrading to get it)
3) Now close down the update program (Do not close Kies).
4) Run regedit, and browse to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Samsung/Kies/DeviceDB/. Under it you have a bunch of numbered keys, find the one that contains the relevant keys (HIDSWVER and ProductCode). If you find more than one HIDSWVER and ProductCode modify the number that also have a key with the IMEI of the phone you wish to upgrade.
5. Replace HIDSWVER and ProductCode with the apropriate values.
6. Launch the upgrade software, and update your firmware.
Enjoy your new firmware.
About the hack:
There seems to be confusion about what this hack REALLY does, so I'll take this space to explain it a bit further.
Every region has a RegionCode (some operators have their own RegionCode too), to ensure people get appropriately localized firmwareupdates. This hack allows the user to trick Kies into thinking the phone is a phone from another region (or with another firmware version). It means you can get a firmwareupdate from a different region on your phone. It does NOT mean you can magically enter a code to have a localized firmware supplied where none has been released. However, should you have a branded phone there is a CHANCE (not all regions have officially released updates) that an update has been released for unbranded phones in your region. If that's the case, all you should need to do is figure out appropriate settings for the registry keys, and Kies will allow you to "upgrade" to an unbranded localized firmware. There is no way for Kies to automatically make hebrew (or any other language not available in chinese firwmares) available in a chinese firmware. Which means that you will NOT retain your localized settings should you upgrade to that chinese firmware.
Here's a list of currently known codes. Please post any codes not listed here that you find, I'll add to this list as they are discovered.

i have just checked my registry and there are 2 number with, HIDSWVER & ProductCode, these are numbers 2 & 8, so which do i edit.
Great job. Well done
this imo needs to be stickied but with a better title and slighty better description.
there was a post somewhere on here with .reg files that can just be run.
does this allow you to upgrade to any firmware from any firmware? my current flashed firmware says it cannot be upgraded. not that its upto date, but that it actually cannot be upgraded.
EDIT:
1. To the guy above asking about the 2 sets of keys with HIDSWVER in, im guessing that you've connected to Kies. Thats the case with mine, where i can clearly see my device, on JM1 and my girlfriends i connected today and was going to update, which is JF3 still. Hope this helps.
2. So if i replace my value 'I9000XWJM1/I9000OXXJG7/I9000XXJG6/I9000XWJM1' with my girlriends 'I9000XXJF3/I9000OXAJF3/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3' then ill be shown i can update to the official JM1? Does this have any complications either during installation, or because my device is already on JM1. Kies does a full flash anyway doesnt it ?
current question: (solved thanks to OP) Does this (upgrading to JM1) have any complications during installation because my device is already on JM1?

Yes, the title is bad... I should have considered it better before posting, as I can't change it now.
EDIT: Ah, I needed to go to advanced mode to change the title.. Hope it's better now.

Yes. You can flash any firmware available on Kies over firmware from any region and any version. You do need to have the data from an upgradable phone though.

Just make sure ProductCode also matches and it should be possible. In test mode it seems to be possible to reflash even if the firmware version is already available on the phone.

None that I know of.
And also: If you have multiple keys with HIDSWVER and ProductCode, I'm guessing you have connected more than one SGS on your computer. If that's the case, modify the keys where you find the IMEI of the phone you want to upgrade. (I'll add this to the original post too)

if you check the keys mate, if they have the same device name but different build numbers, then thats just when youve connected your device on different firmwares. If i was you id delete one of the 'folders' say 8, then connect your device and see if it creates another one, then use that, if not use the other one you had. (dont forget to refresh in regedit!)
sorry if that wasnt clear
btw to backup a free tial MyBackup in market, or Titanium if you have root.
¬ to the OP, the title is great now! the .reg files i was talking about were for each individual firmware! mad i know, but some members probably wont get this, and installing a key is probably easier for them. thanks for clearing things up!
Just delete the entire Samsung entry
it will be recreated upon starting kies
and your device will be in number 1

EDIT: with battery pulled it booted again, only to go to a black screen after Galaxy S logo, man i asked before doing this!
Official updats from kies don't update your bootloader (no boot/sbl bin files)
try to remove your battery, replace it and then try again
if it still doesn't boot, try entering download mode

Unfortunately you didn't provide any information about your situation making it impossible to tell if the majority of possible options would be viable in your case. You didn't even tell us which S5 model, firmware version or carrier you have, let alone anything else.
Given the lack of crucial details, all I can suggest is that you look at debloating threads or consider installing a custom ROM.

The S5 Model is SM-G900F
the Carrier is Vodafone
and they have just rolled out another 4.4.2 Variation and its not on sammobile yet
just dumps more apps eg the RCS
why the XDA CSC changer will not help is strange as it has on other phones
I don't want a custom rom on as I am passing this down to my son so I don't want super user root on
Then use Odin to install the generic 900F European Open firmware, which is unbranded.
If you have any ongoing issues, backup any files important to you and do a factory data reset as well.

Hello,
Rather than start a new thread, I think I might get help here. I'll also say sorry in advance since I have searched through almost the entire forum since last Thrusday, but havent figured out how to fix this.
I have a carrier unlocked G900F (CSC:XFV, South Africa, using latest ANG2 FW) with Vodacom branding. No amount of data resets and flashing with the generic BTU firmware seems to remove the Vodacom boot animations and its bloatware.
Some facts:
(1) The boot and shut down animation seem hardcoded or deodexed or something in the nand. I have tried replacing the files in the system/media folder but no avail. Using offshelf programs was no help.
(2) The Vodacom bloatware deleted with Titanium Backup comes back with with every flash, data or cache reset.
(3) I am already rooted using the Towelroot method and Knox is 0x0.
(A) Is there a way to permanently clean up the above and start off with a fresh clean phone?
(B) Can a 'generic' bootloader be flashed through Odin?
Again I apologize for hogging the thread.
Cheers.

It's customary to start your own thread, rather than piggyback or hijack someone else's. And you should probably do that if you have any follow up questions.
The boot animations are not hard coded and there are a number of existing threads that elaborate on the format. The files are in /system/media e.g. bootsamsung.qmg, bootsamsungloop.qmg, shutdown.qmg. You said that you replaced the files here, but unfortunately gave no specifics or details thereof, making it impossible to discern where you went awry. Perhaps you have a cached copy extant. Try booting to recovery mode and wipe the system cache. In the alternative, did you install any utilities or a custom kernel that may be using the generic Android bootanimation.zip format, instead of the default Samsung .qmg?
Bloatware is a plague. Most firmware, including multi-CSC and probably Open_Eur (ope) (unconfirmed) have carrier specific apps and bloatware. In multi-CSC configurations the apps are triggered by your CSC sales code. you can either change your CSC or simply freeze or debloat your ROM by renaming, moving or deleteing bloatware apps. Or migrate to a custom ROM as they have typically been debloated by the developer in advance.
The goal of a "clean" ROM, devoid of carrier specific apps or bloatware is an elusive one that you probably can't do simply by installing an alternate stock firmware. You generally have to debloat firmware yourself or avail yourself of a custom ROM to the same effect.
Odin is a software package made by Samsung. You are more likely to see flying unicorns than before Odin will freely write third party bootloaders. But it's a moot point as first you'd have to find such a bootloader.
Bootloaders are hardware specific and written by hardware vendors for a given hardware platform. The bootloader is outside Android, it boots the device into Android. Even "open source" Android projects like CM or ASOP use the proprietary bootloader of necessity. Given the proprietary hardware interfaces and drivers it is a daunting task to write a bootloader from scratch for undocumented hardware.
Open source Android bootloaders exist e.g. the Little Kernel bootloader but they do not support most hardware.

I suppose this was my first post at XDA. You could cut some slack here.
Anyway, issue sorted. The trick is to go directly into recovery (unchecking auto-reboot in Odin helps) after flashing a clean FW, and wipe data and cache. Rinse and repeat if you want.
CSC successfully changed from XFV to BTU. Surprisingly also gained quite a bit of disk space but I can not confirm the exact amount. All the bloat is gone with no sign of it.
Thanks anyway.
hey guys,
I have a galaxy s5 g900f and just today i was playing around editing the messaging.apk, when i pushed the apk back into the system and rebooted everything was all fine. Then about ten minutes later my sim stopped working and i had no service whatsoever. I have spent all day flashing different roms, restoring my efs, and flashing different modems. I have checked to see if it is my sim card causing the problem but it is not. On top of all of this the phone reboots every time the screen locks and goes black, i suspect this has something to do with the sim card issue.
if any one is able to help me i would appreciate it so, so much.
thanks in advance.

Please note that HK phone does not compatible with another international firmwares.
You said "spent all day flashing different roms, restoring my efs, and flashing different modems"
So you may have messed up with the partition structure, due to flashing rom/firmware that are not compatible.
Now you may need PIT file from a 'good' HK phone to flash together with the HK firmware (G900FZHU1ANI2).

I'm not trying to start an argument with you by the way, i am just trying to get a grasp on what you are saying. I really appreciate the time and effort you are putting into my problem.
i have attached the pit file to this post.

Sorry, I mean stock firmware for international G900F is not compatible with HongKong G900F.
Regarding custom rom, I have no idea.
Where did you get that PIT file? Are you sure it is from HongKong G900F device?

okay yeah i get what you are saying now. Thank you for clarifying that.
i got it off this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2737448 which seems legitimate. It ran through the process of re-partitioning the rom with no errors so it must mean it is the right file, otherwise it would have come up with an error.

Try this, if any luck:
open Dialer, enter *#0011#, Menu > Back, Menu > Key Input > Q0 > press OK, wait until MAIN MENU appears, select 'run EFS SYNC()'.

I rooted my phone to uninstall some bloatwares, but i accidentally uninstalled the SystemUI.apk. My phone is now totally black with a popup saying:
"Unfortunately, SystemUI has stopped"
Ps.: USB Debugging is off
OEM Switch is off
Bootloader is blocked
Help me please! I dont have warranty on this phone.
What is your phone model number (can be found on the sticker behind the battery or the original box that came with the phone)? I can get you the original system files to flash over with no data loss.

Boot loader being locked means that custom images will be blocked and thus cannot be flashed. Original images, such as those from Samsung, will be flash able. No ADB connection would be required in the restoring process as we will be using the Download Mode function on your device.
I was just downloading the system image for your phone model and found that the region CHM (China) has only Android 5.1.1 while the region TGY (Hong Kong) has Android 6.0.1 already. In addition, the China firmware has got tons of chinese applications while the Hong Kong firmware does not (only has Samsung stock applications). Do you remember what firmware your phone had? I can then download the appropriate image and/or help you to upgrade (data might be lost).

Really i don't remember... But it came with a bunch of programs installed on the firmware and others that were trying to install themselves, such as AliExpress or RAM Cleaner. It was probably the Chinese firmware by the amount of advertising and bloatwares present. I had no apps from any phone carrier in my country, just bloatwares and lots of advertisement. That's why I cleaned up the applications and ended up deleting SystemUI.apk, thinking it was some kind of bloatware. You can send me the link of the chinese firmware and the HK too?
And... Could you search for me how to make my mobile phone model go into download mode? I searched around a lot, but found no way. All of them were for the normal Galaxy J7 and opened a blue screen with an exclamation, doing the way they taught my enter Factory Mode, for tests on sensors and more...
Sorry for my bad english, Google Translator is helping me kk

Is your native language Chinese? Anyways to enter download mode, with your phone fully turned off, press the Volume Down, Home, and Power button until a blue warning screen appears. Then, press the Volume Up button once. To get out of download mode (or to force shut down your device), hold the Volume Down and Power button until the screen turns off. The phone should automatically restart and boot into the system after that.
I assume you know how to use Odin? If you are unsure, I'd suggest not messing around with the system images and use Smart Switch emergency firmware recovery instead. Otherwise, I could provide you detailed steps on how to use Odin.
Anyhow, the links to the official images are here,

P.S. Google Translate does not understand contexts really well.

As I said, this method of entering Download Mode only takes me to Factory Mode. Can you help me with this? Without download mode i can't connect with odin. Is there a way to install update by sd card (Recovery Mode)?

Upon prior research I found that most of them are having this problem due to having purchased a fake device (not original; an imitation). These devices have an MTK chip and does not have the Download Mode. Did you buy this set from an official retailer or at least a reputable site? If so I'd suggest that you return this set immediately.
Ads popping out of nowhere and random applications trying to install is already a call for suspicion. I have a J5 2016 at hand and have tried both region's firmware with no such problem occurring. Since this can be identified as a fake device, installing the official Samsung image would "brick" the device as the hardware configuration is marginally different.
Please check your PM.

I bought this cell phone from my aunt, it's certainly a fake copy of the Galaxy J7 ... Is there any way to solve yet? I'm very worried ... Where can I find the "PM"?
Sorry but this is beyond my reach. Perhaps you could post in the Samsung Galaxy J7 XDA forums and request for anyone who has the same device to perhaps do a system dump. Really sorry!

That's the problem right there. His device is not original from Samsung but is an imitation instead. Doing a skim through various threads here about imitation Samsung phones suggests that the hardware configuration is different like having an MTK processor instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon/Exynos. Flashing the factory firmware would only brick his device, but wouldn't be possible due to the lack of download mode.

After a long time, I discovered that my device is actually a system with MTK 6580 chip. Can you find a system for this version of the chip? I found a firmware here, but I can not install it. The DRAM error of SP Tools always appears, indicating that the firmware was not made for my mobile phone model. Could you help me with that?

Did some searching online and did not find any firmware pertaining to your current device, sorry. I could try extracting the systemUI.apk from the original firmware and make it into a flash able zip for you to install. Not sure if it would work, but would you like to try it out?

Wait... can I check with you whether you have recovery? Is it TWRP? Could you take a picture of it and post it here? If it's the stock recovery then we would have no way of flashing. Doubt TWRP is made for your device as well too.

Hi Forum users
have a problem in attempting to ROOT my phone
SAMSUNG GALAXY S8
been a novice user made a mistake
hopping I can still win.
will give very brief Description for the moment hoping to get some help
Basically phone booted into Standard ROM b4 I had finished (last step applying ROOT)
I now get an Error that boots and reboots) the error is
"Only official released binaries are allowed to be flashed"
can still get into Download screen, but cannot get to recovery (TWRP)
Oden can still connect to download screen.
I think what I need to do is a Factory reset again, and hopefully get back into RECOVERY
any suggestions or help would be gratefully received
thanks
PS
happy to give full description if needed

You will need to flash firmware via odin.
You can download firmware with updato.com or sammobile.com

1. Flashing firmware will delete twrp.
2. Being from Australia myself all firmware are on the website. You will have to filter out for Australian firmware.
3. Do you know what firmware you are on.

Flashing stock rom will restore you phone to it's original state. So you will have to install twrp and root again.
For information about firmware and Odin maybe this may be of some help.

If you are not sure about your firmware install the latest version.
On the website they will also have dates of when the firmwares are released.
You can use also samfirm or frija ( PC applications ) to download latest firmware.
OK will follow that info
and do the Firmware update
As I don't know the firmware number, will have to try the latest version
will do a bit more reading when I have a some time and give it a go
thanks for the links.
Will let you know how it turns out
THANKS
Few more Questions
OK done some reading
filtered out some relevent Files, (I hope)
one file took 16 hours to download (they where feeding it at 50kbs).
So have two files which where listed as XSA carrier,
others where Telstra and Optus.
As I am not aware of XSA carrier was hopping that it was some sort of generic carrier firmware
Is that correct ??
One is version 8
the other is version 9
So should I go with the version 9 ?
Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I get it right
THANKS

XSA is unbranded firmware ( it's what I have installed on my phone).
If you are locked into a carrier flashing other firmware will not unlock you from that carrier.
Not knowing what firmware you had before and because of download speeds you may have to use version 9 ( PIE ) firmware.
To check software version no. ( bootloader ) you can check in download mode. It should have a line saying AP SWREV: B : * - the star is your bootloader version. So you will have to use this version or higher when flashing firmware.
Make sure of your model number when searching for firmware. S8 = SM-G950f

Are you talking about stock or custom recovery and what is the issues you are having with it.
Depending on you bootloader version number you can not down grade firmware.
I tried to install stock recovery, the problem is: odin installs sucessfully recovery but when i try to go to recovery is not installed
