Motorola G3 2015 [TextNOW] - Moto G 2015 General

https://www.textnow.com/wireless/ is selling an unlocked Moto G 3rd generation.
I have received the phone and can confirm it's BL unlocked with their stock ROM; I'll be pulling resources related to this device now.
Research notes
TextNOW is really Sprint.
The number they assign to you exists in the cloud and is probably making and getting calls over LTE, I had this feeling when I noticed the quality scale and special stuff in the .prop of stock ROM.

-------------------------------------
TextNOW unofficial Q&A
-------------------------------------
Q: How are you making calls and SMS normally?
A: Through TextNOW app which works off LTE.
Q: Is the actual RIL (radio) being used?
A: No, not by default but this can be enabled forcefully**
Q: What phone number does the radio use?
A: One unrelated to where you are, you have no choice in this number.
Q: Can the radio # send SMS?
A: No, but kind of via Allo but NOT directly from itself, ever.
Q: Is there any way to remove the SMS lock?
A: I imagine by social-engineering Sprint, as *3 will show you the Sprint plan TextNOW is using.
Q: Bootloader on arrival check...
A: Unlocked
Q: Recovery check
A: None found, purged with fastboot clearly
Q: Compatible with TWRP for 'Osprey' generically?
A: Yes
Q: Compatible with all Osprey ROMs?
A: Yes, by flashing a carrier zip for TextNOW
Q: Can radio phone make and recieve calls?
A: Yes
Q: Is phone carrier unlocked?
A: It seems to not be in terms of function, but I suspect carrier lock was re-enabled by the folks at TextNOW using CDMA workshop or something.

Best way to utilize radio
(Google Voice!)
---------------------------------
Ok, TextNOW is annoying in that it wants all traffic through LTE.
I can't be screwed over by not having a data connection; and missing a call.
Instead create a Google Voice account, have it verify your radio number by CALLING it. SMS verification will NOT work.
After verifying your number have Google Voice forward all calls to it from the number you choose in voice.
After install Hangouts and you can receive and make calls over the phones native Radio using Google Voice with your custom picked number.
Allo will have the same number as your Radio, I would highly suggest Hangouts to send SMS as it will use your Google Voice number.
Likewise, you can port your old phone number to Google voice for $20 and use it forever on the multitude of cheap phones like this that are going to begin emerging.

LOL! I see! What a company!
1- Install TWRP
2- Install SuperSU to obtain Root
3- Backup the OS in TWRP for safety
4- Install CyanogenMod and flash for TextNOW via Moto_LTE.zip
5- Install Google Voice
6- In the Phones dialer *#*#4636#*#*
7- Write down your true number in 'About Phone'
8- Make Google voice forward all calls to this number
9- Install Hangouts to obtain a more native SMS
10- Use Google Voice number natively
11- Profit, bypass the need to make voice calls via data.
WOW! Why would anyone want to use LTE to make voice calls, my way is better it utilizes the actual RIL how can you beat that.
Maybe TextNOW should hire me I could do a way better job
But this is truly poverty-level ****, but I noticed the RIL wasn't being used in stock ROM right away; that all calls were being forwarded to the TextNOW app LOL
WE WANT RIL, WE WANT RIL.
Plus the native number is cool; it can be used as a "landline" in classification and that's important when verifying some things.

Hi, I also bought this phone from TextNow but am interested in getting it into a GSM unlocked state. I have tried the steps in the following thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/help/sim-unlock-xt1548-cdma-model-t3235281/page4
but haven't had any luck getting anything but invalid sim card even after flashing the roms and changin the radios, any advice?

I think I have found the solution for obtaining GSM unlock. I have followed the steps in the following thread and it looks like our NV codes are already matching the unlocked ones except the NV code for domestic unlock, our phones currently have NV 8322 set to 01 it needs changed to 00 for unlock. Unfortunately to do this we need a way of obtaining MSL/SPC code for our phone as the one in the thread does not work for our phone.

Yeah, we can unlock our phone using QC-Tools or CDMA Workshop.

I wish you guys the greatest of luck. This would truly be groundbreaking, as it has been many many years since I've heard of a successful, verifiable DSU on a Sprint based Motorola Device. Motorola is notorious -- at the directives of Sprint and its MVNOs, of course -- for embedding DSU lock code in multiple partitions of a single device. So just when you think you've cracked it --- surprise, another lock. The Moto E LTE xt1526 for example, the /utags, /pds, /hob, and dhob partitions were found, upon inspection, to be embedded with domestic UICC network lock code. I am hopeful that you guys can crack the Moto G3. Perhaps TextNow hasn't resorted to sheer rocket science to GSM lock this great device. Thank you guys....and good luck.

What I'm saying is that this model is already carrier-unlocked, but they have reverted that by changing a '00' to '01' probably.
When I got this phone I went through a battery of testing in order of Q&A, what was important for me:

Q: Is the actual RIL (radio) being used?
A: No, not by default but this can be enabled forcefully
Q: What phone number does the radio use?

I suspect these are actually Global GSM models anyway lol
I think they were flashed with CDMA radios and then locked via CDMA workshop by the developers at TextNOW.
Well, I don't have the power to test because I don't have a GSM SIM card but I do have a second TextNOW phone so things are about to get real tonight either way; I should be able to see if I can forcefully carrier-unlock it via CDMA workshop.
Another amusing thing to note is before I had figured out what it needed to use TextNOW on other Osprey builds; It would sometimes be recognized as a Virgin Mobile device; I guess they are using Sprint towers too

I tried both of these methods, I can't get the radio comm to detect the phone and unfortunately for any NV writer to work it needs an MSL code which we don't have.
Also TextNow model number is xt1548

OK. So its the same variant as the Sprint, Virgin & Boost variants. I'll look into Qualcomm's leaked programming tools. I have a copy on PC. And I can confirm that the MSL is readily available on the Boost & Virgin variants.

As a side note I flashed both the latest (Android 6.0) U. S. Cellular and Sprint roms from the below thread with fastboot and both seemed to work fine on first inspection. I then used the firmware posted earlier in this thread for TextNow and was able to flash back every step except for the partition command, however everything on the TextNow firmware seems to still be working.

I had this theory a while back that TextNow just simlicked the phones. I can confirm that the phone works with international sims (Like FreedomPop Global sim). Also when I disabled the Textnow app and make a call through the stock dialer, It called out to the number i called through the cell towers. The number on the device seems to be based in Virginia even though I'm the California. I'm willing to help with this and keep up the good work!

Possible phone use on Verizon 7.7

Let me note: I am not a dev nor programmer.
With the similiarities of the P6800 and the Verizon 7.7, I threw together a rom w/ stock SCH-I815 samsung/verizon kernel using the P6800 frameworks and apps into the Verizon 7.7 and removed most bloat. The LTE/Verizon antennas aren't recognized by the device at all but everything else was working.
Now, you can't swap the phone.apk's around without the framework's else you'll experience FCs. So obviously I'll need to use the base stock apps and frameworks and go through the 2 framework files hunting about.
Has anyone else with the Verizon 7.7 taken a look into this?
I'm curious if you've made any progress on this?
Not yet, probably be a week before I even look through the files again. But I believe it's fully possible to get phone use

i think you will need to find samsung modem for verzon networks, does verizon have a galaxy note or sgs2?
although your modem firmware probably has voice disabled, may have to find modem manufacturer and try to flash custom firmware.
good luck, wish you the best.
I'm happy enough using GrooveIP for google voice calling. What I'd really like is if we could activate the phone profile in bluetooth (or will that just come with enabling the proper phone part in the 7.7?).
As of now i can use GrooveIP and bluetooth to listen and speak, but it won't let the bluetooth device answer/hang up/transfer address book/show caller ID (on the Verizon LTE 7.7)
Doesn't verizon require some sort of signed telephony to work properly on their network

I got no idea but with the other packs it didn't detect the radio at all. This is keeping the vzw radio partition stock. I like the ideas and really wish the note was verizon as that'd help figure things out.

Seeing as your data account won't have any provisioning for voice usage, even if you DID get a working modem and a modified framework to allow for phone functionality on the device, I doubt that you'd actually be able to made or receive a phone call due to Verizon's limitations at the account and provisioning level anyway.
Point is, it's a CDMA device, and thus your service is attached to the device itself, not the SIM card (except for LTE data). Basically, you can't just provision service to the SIM card alone, and then simply swap it into a different device. So if you got the modem and the framework working, and you called in to Verizon customer service and asked to provision your line for voice, they'll just be like "Umm, no... We never INTENDED for you to use that device as a phone, so no... You want a phone? Buy a phone. You want a tablet? Buy a tablet. You want to do both in one device? We won't allow that because that loses us money that we would be getting by having you either subscribe to two lines, or charge you extra to tether..."
There is a much simpler solution however.
Ditch ANY CDMA carrier in favour of a GSM carrier instead, preferably one that uses the same compatible frequencies adopted by the rest of the world, like AT&T (and MVNO's based off of AT&T's network), and buy the P6800.
The moral of this story is this: if you want the latest devices, with the best features, you're NOT going to find them in the north American market, EVER, at all, period; you're just going to find watered-down, gimped, bloated, and locked-down versions of the international models. You HAVE to import. If you're going to import, you HAVE to use a GSM service provider... That's just the way it is. It sucks, I know, but it is what it is.
I would have to agree, the GSM version would be best. It would be near impossible to make this happen. Of course if I was stick with one, I would try everything I could as well. I'd probably fail miserably and go for something like GrooveIP.

I can CONFIRM the following:
I have a VZ tab 7.7 with 5GB data plan and I have a VZ Razr with voice/unlimited data plan.
Both are LTE devices and hence use (micro) SIM cards. In "My Verizon" even the tab has a phone number assigned to it's "line". A call to that number just rings but obviously nothing on the tab.
BUT...
Put the tab sim in the phone and YES it will ring if you call that number! Even TXT in/out works! I assume they will just charge me per txt and per min phone use BUT IT WORKS in a PHONE.
And the kicker is, the unlimited PHONE SIM also works in the TAB! I immediately get LTE data and can surf with the tab. Of course at that point calls and texts to that phone number are "ignored" by the tab's neutered modem.
Lesson learned:
IF there was a way to flash a modem, say for example from the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to the VZ 7.7 TAB, we would have a full supersized phone in our hand. Only downside, no earpiece. So only speakerphone or BT calls I guess.
Anyway, after a little more research I also found this very interesting article:
http://www.phonenews.com/verizon-affirms-unlimited-smartphone-sim-card-usage-in-hotspots-tablets-lte-ipad-20053/
Hope this helps bring a little light into the messy CDMA/LTE darkness
I have swapped my Galaxy Nexus SIM in my VZW LTE 7.7 numerous times. It works. I'd love to have voice on the VZW LTE 7.7, then I could possibly do it all on my tab. I'm no developer tho ;p

Non Verizon Nexus 6 Verizon Users VOLTE

I did some extended research and also noticed there is nothing posted on here about this so I figured I post my results. This has been confirmed with two users that this method does work.
For anyone that is having issues not getting volte/HD calling to work here are the steps provided below:
Before you continue you have to make sure your line is provisioned to work with Volte/HD calling. Most of us bought the device away from Verizon. This wont provision it just by sticking the sim in (I have seen a few that have claim this). To provision your line you need to activate the HD calling on verizon account with a verizon compatable HD device (Droid Turbo, S5 ect) The link below provides compatable devices. This is only for Nexus 6 devices not bought from verizon.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/landingpages/advanced-calling-devices/
Stick the sim in one of these devices. Activate HD calling and make sure it works. Then Transfer the sim back over to the nexus 6 .
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information and click to turn on volte provisioned flag. (if it wont let u turn on flash the bootloader/radio from here thanks to @scrosler for this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/bootloader-radio-boot-img-boot-loader-t3052425
Reboot twice and then go to settings more, cellular networks, switch preferred type to lte/cdma
and then tick the 4g lte mode. before u make a test call to confirm volte works turn wifi completely off and that ur on lte service.
Reboot and then ur good. You only have to do this one with the provisioning of another device. once the provision is done your account is good this day forward. Unless u get another sim card you will have to do this again.
Again this is only for non verizon nexus 6 users.
Please make sure ur on the 5.1 radio else this wont work.

If u order it from verizon to have them send to u. you still have to activate it before u put it in the nexus device. I have done this. U cant just take the sim and insert it.

I have read the threads, and I called out a few that stated that they did it and later found out they activated the sim with another device.
Verizon even stated to activate the sim they have to do it with another device since it comes up as unsupported device.

I was able to log into the VZW account management site and activate advanced calling / VOLTE.;
My Account --> Manage Products & Apps --> Get Products --> Free Products --> Activate Advanced Calling.
Even though I activated my N6 after ordering from Motorola back in December, VZW did recognize that the N6 supported VOLTE. The N6 is using a sim activated through a G1 Moto X.

To provision your line you need to activate the HD calling on verizon account with a verizon compatable HD device (Droid Turbo, S5 ect) The link below provides compatable devices. This is only for Nexus 6 devices not bought from verizon.

Stick the sim in one of these devices. Activate HD calling and make sure it works. Then Transfer the sim back over to the nexus 6.

I have already done the steps of activating through the Verizon website, and the *#*#4636#*#* to turn on volte provisioned flag and enabled "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode". Do I need to undo all of that before attempting to activate VoLTE in a Verizon compatible HD device?

This option isn't displayed in my phone. Is this something that'll appear once I bring the SIM back into my phone after doing the steps above in a Verizon compatible phone? I'm on CM12.1-20150531-NIGHTLY-shamu and the closest thing I can find is: Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks>Preferred network type: which lists options: LTE(recommended), 3G, 1x, and Global. Again, will other options pop up after I provision the sim in a Verizon compatible phone?

I already have. I'm just trying to determine if I need to undo all of those steps to provision it in a Verizon compatible device first? In other words, I'm trying to determine if the order of operation is required or if I perform all of your steps in any order, whether it should work.

I cannot get LTE to any APN work right with any custom ROM on the Moto G4 Play. :(

I have the Moto G4 Play (XT1607) (Harpia) and I have decided to flash LineageOS (lineage-14.1-20170131-nightly-harpia-signed.zip) on it using TWRP v3.0.2 r5. After getting it installed I noticed that it was not connecting to my 4g LTE Internet (I have Ting). So I figured I needed to make some changes to the APN settings. So I go to Settings>... More> Cellular Networks and the moment I click on "Cellular networks" I get an error message saying "com.android.phone has stopped". After reflashing and trying again a few times with the same result, I tried using a completely different ROM. AOKP. (aokp_harpia_nougat_nightly_2017-01-31.zip) and I ran into the same exact problem I was having with LineageOS.
I then tried to see if I could force my way into the APN configuration using an app called "Change APN". This worked, but now I see the message "Access Point Name settings are not available for this user". I decided to ignore this and click on the + to create a new APN. After filling the correct info out for Ting APN, I click on "Save"... and it doesn't save at all.
I decided to revert to the stock rom, and everything works perfectly fine with the stock rom. 4G LTE on Ting works fine. Whenever I try using a custom ROM of any kind, I run into the problem I described above. I don't know if I am forgetting to do something, or completely doing something wrong. I could use some help with this guys.
Isn't Ting a Sprint service? I didn't think CDMA-based networks had APN settings to configure. Verizon and US Cellular have always used *22XXX for programming, as far as I can remember.

Yes. Ting is a Sprint service. Well either way LTE isn't working and the 3G keeps randomly turning on and off whenever I use a custom ROM. However, when I use Stock firmware, everything works perfectly fine. I am unsure what is causing the issue.
It seems nearly all custom ROMs at this point are having data connectivity issues. I'm trying to find a nandroid of the original xt1607 rom so I can just go back until its all sorted out.

With Ting you can choose to use Sprint or T-Mobile. I am using the T-Mobile side of Ting and you do need to add Ting's APN settings for it to work. I am still on factory ROM but watching closely to see what others are experiencing with custom ROMs.

I haven't noticed any issue with my GSM ting service on lineage. I get LTE and the WiFi/LTE handoff seems to work. I don't install many apps and don't let them run in the background, so perhaps there's a conflict between them that's shutting down LTE service. This is just a guess.
Anyone have any information pertaining to this subject? I've searched hours on hours to no avail. I run U.S. Cellular and on the newest RR-5.8.1-OMS after I go to Settings>More>Cellular Networks>Crash. Every time. Resets my radio and picks right back up again. Everything works until I'm in my house, then I'm roaming and there's no way to manage in settings because of the crash.
I looked around in the file system and in /data/data/com.android.phone/ there is no files, no .db files or anything. I don't know of there's supposed to be either. But like OP stated, stock rom is flawless.
Would I be and to copy com.android.phone from stock and restore after flashing? I don't know what to do but this is with every single custom ROM out right now on every release. Data and everything works fine as far as I can tell but just no way to configure the settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Just out of curiosity, have you tried the *22XXX thing yet?
EDIT: Just so we're clear, with you all who have CDMA phones, when you go into "IMEI Information," it does show both an IMEI and an ICCID, right? Because if not, I think I figured out why your LTE isn't working.
I tried, I tried dialing *22999 (guessing that the x stood for the 9 button in T9 language) and pressed the make a call button. Am I wrong about the "XXX" part? Because I did try that when I seen it previously in the thread earlier but had the same thoughts.
So to make that novel a shorter version, what exactly should I dial?

It depends on the carrier and the model of the phone. For most Tracfones, it's *22890. For US Cellular, I've seen it as *228 and *22894. You may have to call your carrier and ask what their phone programming code is.
Aaah ok I got you now. Yes I've tried that on nearly every ROM. Matter of fact I just noticed I posted a little off topic almost, but I'm here for the relevance of com.android.phone crashing EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to open Cellular Networks. The only ROM I will say it doesn't force close on is the Slim Nougat ROM, but I don't run that because instead of Cellular Networks settings making com.android.phone crash its when you place a call and then it force closes the UI part of the call but still carries the call through. I forgot to mention that by the way, whatever it is in Slim that is the making the different reason for force closing com.android.phone could probably be a pretty easy red flag for someone better equipped for this Lind of troubleshooting than myself!
Thank you for the suggestion though on the *22(8 in my case)

After I posted that, I went back to try and see if Lineage was able to pick up my phone's MEID (even though I use a GSM SIM, the MEID is still tied to the phone hardware). For some reason, Lineage is not reading it, and I think all of your problems are being attributed to that fact.
The way CDMA phones work (and god, do I hate this), is your 2G/3G network is tied to the phone MEID, while the LTE SIM is data only. The OS needs to read both the 14-digit MEID (sometimes shows as a 15 digit IMEI where last digit is 0) as well as the 20 digit ICCID (SIM Number). A phone may also use the SIM number itself as an IMEI (BYOP SIMs do this) by dropping the first five digits of the 20 digit SIM number.
If you phone is showing only one 15 digit number in the system settings, then it's either the MEID OR the SIM, not both. So either you have calling and no LTE, or LTE and no calling. You can't program APN settings because the phone has no idea what ID number to tie APN settings to. This is actually a rather serious conundrum.
Ok ok, makes sense. I checked my Status info, every ROM has dual SIM capability by the way so I don't know if that would effect anything for xt-1607, but I looked at SIM slot 1 info and it reads my MEID correctly with 14 digits. I couldn't find anything about ICCID. My head pounding question here though, why in the hell (pardon the language) is everything flawless on stock, but on every ROM this problem occurs? Here's my next killer, everything works like it should for me, LTE, 3G, Calls, SMS/MMS, just can't change any of the settings due to a force close, AND I put my friends Straight Talk SIM in and it fired right up with no force close when going to change Network settings...?!

I think you just answered your own question. As stated in PCMag back in 2015, "Nobody makes a Dual-Sim phone compatible with Sprint or Verizon." It legitimately believes your MEID is a GSM-based IMEI, and is attempting to cross the streams, so to speak. And the only way your friend's StraightTalk SIM would work is if it was piggybacking off ATT or TMo's networks (the MEID would have been paired to the other phone causing a mismatch).
If you look at the stock ROM for this phone, you will see a BUNCH of system apps for programming Sprint and Verizon network information. They never made it into the custom ROMs we're using. FWIW, here's my thoughts on the matter. Someone needs to go back and make a single-SIM variant of these ROMs, as well as a flashable ZIP containing the necessary APKs for Android to detect the necessary information correctly. And if that doesn't happen, then everyone who bought an XT-1607 has to ditch their carrier and move to a GSM carrier.
That makes complete and total sense! Because I wasn't thinking this while time of it but I was in Oklahoma at the time where the main towers are AT&T, matter of fact Sprint and U.S. Cellular lose almost all signal right when you hit the county line where I was at. Verizon only gets signal because it's Verizon, lol. Reason I say that is because I was wondering why this whole time I has full signal with LTE coverage and completely list everything when I went hone, because where I live is complete opposite, there is hardly any GSM coverage, we don't even have an AT&T store, just Verizon, Sprint, USC.
So, with that being figured out, my laptop just recently kicked the bucket on me so I'm out for the most part, I do have a trick to swap files in and out of a compressed archive without extracting it in any way! But, it takes a while, not too much longer I guess but nowvi just remembered everything is pretty much .dat files so nevermind that.
Not that this thread isn't the most popular, but where would be the best place to take this request too to get the most attention from it? I mean if I had to go back to stock, so be it, but I'm a little spoiled to the custom life. Lol.

IIRC, there is a Verizon thread with 80ish replies, but I think a developer like Squid might need to be made aware of this, so I might copy this into the Lineage thread.
A bit of good news. While reflashing all the time that were force closing when opening cellular networks, I looked in /data/data/com.android.phone/ and was looking, now remember to go back to that directory after I say all this, I found that directory was empty, on all of the Roms. Was curious so I flashed back to stock. Went to the same directory, BOOM! com.android.phone was not empty, in that folder I found 2 folders that were now populated with in:
1: (/files/ )I now had a file named carrierconfig-com.android.carrierconfig- (and after the dash was my ICCID number) so for this directory I need /data/data/com.android.phone/files/carrierconfig-com.android.carrierconfig**ICCID** (replace **ICCID** my ICCID number)
2: then there was this /data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/_has_set_default_values.xml
and
phone/shared_prefs/com.android.phone_preferences.xml
These files are missing on all the Roms, I know this doesn't since everything, but I know for almost a fact it's a good chunk of something that needs to be available. Can I copy these files and move them into place, and set permissions how they were? I ran out of time tonight, and am busy all week so this is mainly for reference I guess. More research told me these files can be edited to change what is available to configure in cellular network settings like option to change from 2G, 3G, LTE, APN, and so on. Sorry for the mess, that's all I have for right now.

That is definitely a major find! My only concern is even if you do that, there might be further missing components that would cause Dialer to crash on startup or some other wacky side effect. However, if you can make it work, then it's possible the proper APN settings will load by default and you'll no longer need to change them.
If you can, go into the System Apps on the stock ROM and look for any APKs branded by/with Sprint, VZW or USCellular, or anything CDMA related. They might be necessary for reading the SIM's ICCID.
That's what I was thinking too, and sadly for me I don't really know EVERYTHING to look for so it'll be mostly out of trial and error for me to figure it out. I wish they didn't compress Roms into .dat so I could use a root explorer to swap between tabs rather than copy, flash the rom, paste files and then if that didn't work start all over on restoring stock, so on and so forth. I miss my laptop. =(
Updates?
Has anyone looked into this further? I'm experiencing the same problem with the latest LineageOS nightly. US Cellular Prepaid with an XT1607.
I noticed that in my case i had to skip the Insert Sim thing on 1st boot. It never did whatever it wanted to there. (Maybe because I have no signal or weak roaming where I live?)
I'm seriously considering trying it from an area that I have good service in..

VZW Activation

I bought VS995 phone slightly used. Upon getting the phone I used the Dirty Santa Root and Bootloader unlock method. I finally got around today to going to VZW and getting a new SIM and activating it on my current line. Activation kept failing. It was at the point where everything entered fine on their end , but on the phone it took about 5 minutes before giving the activation unsuccessful message. Has anyone encountered this issue? Rooting and unlocking the bootloader before activating it with a new SIM card? They were having problems with their activation servers this morning and said that since it's a new SIM it could be getting hung up with their server issue. I'm going to try tonight from my house. But was curious if I need to take any extra steps to get it activated. If my note 3 had a nano SIM card in it, I would have just been able to swap without an issue.

lg v35 - amazon with Project Fi

Hi, I just picked up on those Amazon Prime phones, LG V35 unlocked. I was sure it would work with project fi and even project fi said it would work. Well, it really does mostly work. I was able to activate it and do just about everything, but I noticed 2 things:
1. No option to enable wifi calling
2. No access to visual voicemail.
I figured I could just install the regular google phone app to gain access to those things, but the google phone app doesn't enable that stuff. And when you make a call, it appears to switch over the LG phone app.
I don't see why this shouldn't work with Project Fi, but I have no clue how to enable those things. Calling on Tmobile and sprint work, texts etc work, it's just those two things that don't work
Would really love to use this version since it's quite a bit cheaper than buying the Fi version.

I don't have this device but, the following thread looks like the same/similar discussion than your question for the same device. It may be helpful for you.

Same exact situation here...times three. I bought three of them for family members hoping there would be some way to make the Amazon V35 fully-functional on Project Fi. No visual voicemail would be acceptable, but lack of wi-fi calling is a deal-breaker for me. Any idea if it's even possible to get that working on this phone?
Ironically, wi-fi calling IS installed on the phone (visible by viewing installed system apps), and when I am in an area *with* wi-fi but *without* cellular service, it is trying to connect to wi-fi calling but can't with an "ER081 - Unable to Connect" error.
Any options here?
Thanks much!
Thanks ! It looks like it's just a matter of removing a couple of the lg apps and replace them with Google apps, like the dialer. I don't know if this is even possible or not so I may just return the phone. It would seem like just replacing the dialer would make a big difference though....

Ok, so I made some project on this -- I got visual voicemail working. All I did was download the phone app, made it default for phone , gave it some permissions and I got all of my visual voicemail.
As for wifi calling, I can't get it to work. I downloaded google connectivity services (strangely, you can't search for it in the play store, but if you do a web search, you'll get a link to it in the play store), I gave it all permissions, etc, and actually I got ONE wifi call to work, but after that I just keep getting "ER081, Unable to connect." So wifi calling doesn't work and I'm not sure what the trick is to make it work. Everything else SEEMS to work, but since wifi calling doesn't work, I wonder if there is anything else that is broken that I'm not seeing.
I don't think you can remove the Amazon apps but they aren't intrusive at all. I got this on prime day and I'd keep it if I could get that wifi calling to work :/
How do I test Wi-Fi calling. Have the same V350ULM on verizon.
I have been playing with hidden settings but really don't know what I am not I am doing and seems like a lot of damage can be done in there using the "Nova Launcher" using the activities widget.
Warning: can really mess up the phone. Be careful and let me know what you find. I am also looking to enable video calling on Verizon.
Thank you
So I got this device from Amazon, and I've had nothing but issues with it.
Originally got it for Verizon, as it says on the Amazon page that it supports the Verizon network, which is partially true. I can make calls and texts and use data on the Verizon network, but literally don't get ANY of the advanced calling features, such as Premium voicemail, or WiFi calling, which is what I needed.
After looking into it, I determined that it was becuase it was an unlocked phone, and I am just not going to get those services to work on the Verizon network.
So my thinking was to switch carriers to Google Fi, since all they do is service unlocked phones. I got the SIM card yesterday, downloaded the Project Fi app, activated and ported over my number from Verizon. All seemed good, except as soon as I finished activation, I kept getting hit with this WiFi Calling Error: ER081 "Unable to Connect".
I first attempted to use only WiFi to do stuff on the phone. I turned on airplane mode, then turned on WiFi, and started testing. I first sent and received SMS and MMS using the standard Android Messages app, and that worked fine.
I then attempted to make a call, and it failed. The phone app wont even attempt to dial out, as it states that 'Airplane Mode' is enabled. That Error: ER081 keeps popping up.
I've been dealing with Project Fi support for the past 12+ hours now trying to figure this out, going through all the BS, they wanted me to install the Hangouts App and Hangouts Dialer, and that works over WiFi, so they were trying to say problem fixed (only if I use that app). That is not a solution.
Has anyone had any better luck with this device on any other carrier, with ALL advanced services and calling features functioning 100%?
I feel like this is a carrier service issue, and not a device hardware issue.

For me it worked if I reset the phone back to stock, and turned it off. Put the Fi SIM in, went through setup, installed the Fi APP, let it do it's config thing, THEN tried to make a call. For me it then worked on WiFi.

KennynGGG, just want to confirm something. You flashed a ROM onto your LG V35 ThinQ? How did you unlock the bootloader - has some kind of exploit been discovered?

Well, being a noob and all I wasn't sure but are you saying that the bootloader has to be unlocked in order to flash any rom in cluding the same Rom Albeit different carrier ?
I just got me a V40 ThinQ thanks to Sprint. It's full of bloated stuffs though, I've never had a branded phone before or may be other company aren't as bad.
Anyway, I want to take a rom dump from the V40 and see if I can give my V35 a run before I send it in to LG for warranty repair. But when I tried uppercut to launch LGUP it still says the dll is out dated. I've tried it with my dll from V35 extraction. still not taking it. Any suggestion ?

I don't have either devices but, Regarding the LG V40, the following area of the forum is specific to that device.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=7911
The following thread is regarding the Debloating of the V40 as well.

Regarding the V35, the following is the Enhanced Tag link that's specific to that device.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/lg-v35
I'm not sure which thread within the V35 ET would possibly fit what you're looking for but, you can always take a look and see if there's anything there that's helpful to you.
Good Luck!

I just finished flashing the Project Fi firmware to my Amazon V35 and it all went fine. Going to assume it's a simpler flash since the 2 are practically the same, even the firmware share the same version number. Before doing a factory wipe I tested WiFi calling by turning airplane mode on, wifi back on and made a call. Worked perfect. Did a factory reset on the phone to clear all the Amazon bloat and noticed that when the Project Fi app was activating service, it auto downloaded a sprint file/profile which I had never seen before.
I pulled the LGUP dll from the firmware and also modded it and LGUP for developer options. I only had to pick upgrade for it to work and was surprised how quick the flash actually was. I won't ramble anymore, but if anyone wants I can upload the modded dll and lgup exe that I used to flash.

No problem, hopefully the zip file with the modded files is attached correctly to this reply. It's for LGUP 1.14
My phone was listed as V350ULM10f after the latest OTA update last month (I think it was just a security update). But that's the same version I used for the KDZ. I grabbed the firmware from here:
Firmware
Hopefully it works for you too.
Edit: Also forgot to mention, I had to put the phone into download mode for it to work correctly. Power the phone off, plug the cable into the PC, while holding volume up plug the usb cable into the phone and once you see download mode, release volume up. Then launch LGUP and it should find the phone and be good to go.

Thanks Ibuprofen...I'll definitely check those out this weekend....I noticed the V40 Dev mode has "OEM Unlock" an option to turn on or off but that's probably isn't going to do any good without fastboot.
Bloatcrap
I currently have the Amazon 35.... Are you telling me I can get rid of all this bloatware just by flashing the original firmware?
If this is true I could kiss you on the mouth.
