[Idea] When will I use a Samsung Based ROM ? Well...

I currently use AOKP, before was on CM9. I really dislike Samsung's ROMS. I even took it away 1 hour apart from my purchase to the note.
Then thinking? When would I ever use Samsungs? Well only if a Dev was able to port the :
1) Stock AOSP ICS Phone, Messaging & Contacts app Maybe Camera App too. Include all ICS Gapps and remove Samsung's old ****.
2) Total and clear theming for Samsung's TW look, turn it perfectly to an ICS look ( Pretty possible by theming ) ( AOSP ICS Lockscreen ) ( Editable Power Widgets, ICS look )
3) On top of all, optimize the TW Rom as most devs in the Development thread do for Samsung's Roms, of course.
By then we won't lose the functionality of the S-Pen or the S-Apps, get the Stock AOSP look with its Apps. Would pretty much feel like you're on a mock-up CM9 or so heh ! Just an idea
Any Dev willing to work on a such project?

Use the AOKP M6 its the best ,fast very stable.
I would say CM9. Because.....
-Built from the ground up from aosp. Makes it very clean
-Very Smooth, much smoother than GB
-Tons of other options such as lockscreen shortcuts, theme engine, status bar toggles etc.
-Lots of support
-Updated VERY frequently
-Almost No bugs.
I'd recommend CM9 or AOKP. Both can be found in the dev section here.
I've tried most ics and I'd definitely have to say slim ics.
It has strict rules about keeping it light so you can definitely expect serious performance from this one (most likely better than the rest) yet has all the cool bells and whistles from the kang project like customized toggles, battery indicators, bln, etc.
It's updated frequently when the author thinks something happens that warrants an update (like the linaro thing). Your phone will even notify you when a new rom update is available.
No bug fixes because, to be honest, i've been running it for a few months and I'm yet to find a bug. If you look through this rom's dev thread you'll find most people joke about something else because there are that few problems to talk about in this rom. They will seriously answer, however, if a real problem is posted.
The only thing to take care is the default launcher. Dev has included lightning launcher (for lightness purposes). For as awesome as it may be, most people find it a ***** to customize and just end up installing nova or apex launchers.
Battery's fine - lasts the day with heavy use, it's all i ask. Def lasts longer if i did less.
Some of my uses for this rom:
Heavy texting / phonecalls
Friendscaster (aka facebook whith awesome widget)
Bluetooth connection with my car (stream mp3 and handsfree, contacts even show in my car)
Heavy book/manga reading
Video watching, yt, flash pages, movies/series to kill time
Web browsing ( default browser is actually very good, plays flash like a champ)
Torrent downloading
Gps (my gps never ever worked no matter what. It's actually borderline usable with this rom)
Xda
Listen some music
Take pictures (very good camera, you can check my cat in the "show your best shots: thread)
Manage my calendar and quick notes
Document editing (gdocs)
Play some games (I'm on max payne atm)
Etc
If nothing else, definitely worths the shot. Try it out.
Elite's also good, or at least was when i left it.

I also vote for slim ics. I really like the idea about barebones rom with few apps but tons of settings. It's also fast, stable and updates have been good quality.

I will say this.......there are so many threads that ask this same question that to create another one is purely proof of one's inability to read, think, test and form ones own opinion....because that is all you get-...opinions, some people want loads of customization, some want loads of bells and whistles, some want it slim as possible .......but everyone is hoping that you.............LEARN TO READ.

There are recently 2 noobs that create all of these annoying threads. I can't get it.
I vote for Infinitum LBR (sadly not updated anymore)
And ICS333.
Because they both work smoothly. Infinitum had a nicer notification bar however.

[Q] Custom ROM Question

Hi there! New to the forum, formerly used SDX developers.
on my first TouchWiz device and was hoping to hear some opinions and get educated on how custom ROMs work on a phone with an OEM overlay. I previously ran a Nexus S with Cyanogenmod on it. I really enjoyed it, but didn't lose any features going from vanilla Android to CM.
curious what features I might lose if I were to switch on this new phone. The features I might be interested in not losing are the camera app (essentially the burst shooting mode and best picture mode) and the air gestures. There were many features I really enjoyed of CM, but I would like most some sort of compromise.
other ROM suggestions would be appreciated to hear too.
Thanks for your time.

You basically either got to go AOSP or TW, all the TW roms will have those features that come with stock working. AOSP roms like CM, AOKP, PA, etc won't have any of the unique TW features like air gestures and etc. In regards to the camera, it won't be the same exact app, but I'm pretty sure AOSP has a few equivalent shooting modes but I don't remember which ones, haven't used the AOSP camera in awhile.
And I'm pretty sure I've read that it won't be possible to merge those TW features, like smart scroll and all that air stuff, into CM and etc. MAYBE if the Google GS4 comes with them we will be able to port them in, but I doubt that'll the Google S4 will.

So S Beam and S Health won't be ported to AOSP style ROMs either? I'm just trying to figure out which way to go. I like the idea of some of these features, but realistically probably wouldn't use them much. Have you experimented with any ROMs on your S4 yet? Thanks for your response.

I'm quite sure that the APK's of those apps are dependent on Touchwiz so they won't work if your on an AOSP rom. That might not be the case for all of them.
Yes sir! I have tried all the main TW roms out, Force Rom is a really slimmed down stock rom with some nice mods, FreeGS4 is a choose and pick everything you want from stock with everything being included and most of it being uninstallable by default, with a bunch of great mods, Blue Kuban is a blue themed out TW rom with a great built in mod downloader/updater. All three are great with different niches. There is also Highway (or something like that) and Untitled rom but those are in their early stages still.
And the AOSP roms are the usuals, CM, AOKP, AOSPA and also SlimBean. If your going to try an AOSP rom I recommend the official CM nightlies or Slimbean as the others are still in beta.

I've been thinking I would wait for a CM milestone before giving it a shot. Might try Free GS4, that sounds up my ally. Thanks again for the answers. One last question if you have time: Have you considered dual booting?
I have been running ForceRom and have had great success with it. Battery life is great and phone has been running quite smoothly. Link below if you wanna check it out.

Good question, and good information for new smartphone people such as I.
I am running the Team Sonic rom, I like it quite a bit. Its very similar to stock but with some important tweaks:

[Q] TouchWiz features on AOSP

I'm looking forward to make my I9505 go full AOSP. TouchWiz bothers me with it's UI, the size of files and also it's awfully slow on my device, somehow. With all AOSP benefits, though, I'll be missing some TouchWiz apps, like the camera with slowmotion recording and S-View cover.
Is there any way to get those, or at least a 3rd party equivalent for an AOSP based ROM?
BONUS
What AOSP ROM do you guys recommend me?
Having it be compatible with Viper4Android FX is good. Great if I can use a normal USB connection (like this app does http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297888) rather then the SD card-corrupter Samsung's MTP.
Can be 4.3 or 4.4 (4.4 preferred, as I want to see what's new)
Those apps wont run native. Maybe some apps are ported, but you have to search for that.
There is no best aosp rom. Just try it out what suits your needs. That question is not allowed here, because every rom has it own benefits and cons, thus "best rom" does not excist.

The Perfect Rom

I am one of those people who like a stock rom. Nothing is better than throwing on a stock AOSP rom after a string of crack flashes to test out the latest and greatest custom roms.
There are some great ones out there too such as, just to name a few of the greats, Cyanide, Blisspop, Dirty Uniform, Candy L and AOSIP. There are many more that I did not mention that are in my category of highly customizable roms. But there are so many more that it would take up a page alone just trying to mention all of the outstanding so if I did not get Yours on this list, please forgive me.
After a week or two you just crave to flash back to stock because of, put in you reason here, what ever is not working right, small issues or even as big as random reboots pop up from time to time. What ever the reason you feel the need to go back to stock to straiten your device back out or even to see why in the world you left to begin with.
You are back on stock, in the case of the Nexus 6, vanilla AOSP. It is supper reliable and rock solid OS but boring. It lacks pizazz, or customizability. And then you remembered why you flash that custom rom in the first place, it was to get that battery bar or custom colorable status bar icons and drop down menu. You are now back to square one.
This is where I start to think about just what is a perfect stock rom. Well I own quite a few devices, and my favorite "stock rom" of all would be CM12s, off of the One Plus one. It had all the feature that I would like right out of the gate without flashing so much as a custom recovery, although those of us who flash roms also do because we just enjoy flashing and the custom recovery would have to go on right away.
What I'm finally getting at in this long winded post is that I would love to see that rom ported to this device, CM12s, or better yet just to have that theme engine incorporated into a stock AOSP rom. I like the theme engine in CM12s. Why not just flash the latest CM12.1 made for my device and shut the heck up? Because CM12.1, as good as it is, has bugs. Remember, bugs are the reason we finally came back to stock or come back to stock from time to time and that is to prove to ourselves that our device does work right and that there is nothing with it.
So I guess that this is my lame attempt at asking a dev out there to do this, to make the stock rom that came on this device capable of running the theme engine that comes stock on the One Plus. I think that would be an awesome rom. Simple yet capable of customizing with your favorite theme. I don't do layers and yes I have tried it. I test roms. That's my love. So I do flash roms like RostaPop and Chroma and Lollipopalooza to name a few and I just like themes better. And I have a large collection of themes that I purchased and would like to use them. Just my preference.
What are your thoughts on a perfect rom? If you are a Dev and are willing to take up this "unofficial request" I would be willing to do the testing and If it works out, I am one of those that "pay to play", so to speak, for the outstanding work that you devs do and would make a donation for your trouble. Let me know your thoughts and thank you for reading this post.

I somewhat agree with you on the whole "stock" thing...problem is I'm a flashaholic. Even if I'm perfectly content I'll still find something to flash. Like I was thrilled to be running "M" dev preview, and not just the stock image, but the ROM that was developed which I'm sure you've seen. It was great with Hells kernel and ran fantastic.. well except I couldn't get V4A to work for the life of me and my download speeds on WiFi weren't as good as on 5.1.1. But I'm back to my all time favorite ROM & kernel on this device, and that's Per's Spring ROM & kernel... I have yet to find something better than his work, and I've been through it all. So if you haven't tried his CM12.1 based Spring I suggest you do...its awesome.
i used to be a flashaholic back on the Gnex, and N5 days, now I'm an old man. I like stock rooted unlocked unencrypted, Google bloat doesn't bother me. What bothers me is unstable and a bunch of broken and useless features to make your device look stupid and not like a true android.
I'm not going to say much, but stock is not aosp. you can not say stock aosp as stock. stock and aosp are two different ROMs.

if you dont believe me, try running the aosp browser on the stock ROM.. oh, guess what, it won't work. why? because they are two different ROMs.
Lots of apps already updated on M preview. Very happy with it now
Almost all apps "ROM" are same ... are little difference between them ... For Me, best are: Benzo Rom, CM12.1, and Euphoria ...
Benzo is the most stable, hard hitting, battery saving, butter smooth ROM I've ever used on any phone.

I agree completely. What I was trying to get at though was that, at least for me, on my One Plus I think that they had a winner with the stock rom that came on it. It was AOSP like for the most part (actually CM) but included the theme engine in it for people who looked to customize. So if you like to stay plain you could or of you wanted wild that option was there as well.
Now on the Nexus 6, the stock OS is, at least to me, boring in it's looks but functions almost flawlessly. I would just like to see Google do something like CM12s for people who may not want to flash but still want customization in their stock rom.

your wish has been done..! in m, google includes the code for rro(layers) in it. so you can use the layers manager app, and layers themes, to theme your device, stock.

Interesting to say the least. I have read some of that and seen some videos that talked about just that. As long as it is user friendly than they will have a winner. But for people to really gravitate to it, it will have to be more use friendly than it is in lollipop.
I'm going to wait a bit to try "M" out again though. It just wasn't stable enough for me as it was a couple days ago.

Remember layers was an extension of the rro code found in lollipop
It seems as if I'm always falling back on stock+xposed+gravity box+ my favorite battery sipping kernel and this usually yields excellent results!

Same here, started when I got my HTC One M8. S-OFF'd it and converted to GPE. Stock Google w/ Gravity box and a Custom Kernel is my favorite on my Nexus 6 & HTC One M8.
Well, for me I need customizable nav bar height and preferably Layers/Theme.
So I just haven't been using stock since Nexus 4.
I have tried many ROMS (PA, CynaogenMOD, Chroma, .....) on several devices (HTC Desire HD, Nexus 4 and Nexus 6) and for me DirtyUnicorns ROM + Kernel is the best setup I have ever found.
Lightweight
Essential features but not blown up
Stable
Developed by a whole experienced team with frequent updates
Xtrasmooth on my N5 and now on my N6.

At the risk of looking like an idiot after all these years of flashing Roms, but with the hope of learning something, I have a few questions:
1. I always thought a Nexus device had bare-bones android which is aosp.
2. If the N6 factory ROM isn't pure aosp, what is it aside from the device specific stuff?

The stock ROM has many google proprietary parts that replace the ones found in aosp. Aosp has many outdated apps also, such as browser, MMS, email, etc. Stock uses Chrome, Hangouts, Gmail by default. They are actually quite different at the source level. This is why devs have such a hard time trying to get stock features like WiFi calling & VoLTE working on aosp Roms.

I'm probably missing something since on the surface it seems like the difference are in the included apps (chrome vs browser, Email vs gmail, etc.). However you mentioned that some things are different at the source level.
So basically you're saying that a ROM built from source released by google (aosp) is different from a Nexus ROM?
Since I have no idea how to code, have some basic knowledge of Linux commands, and have never fathomed building a ROM there are some fundamentals that I'm missing hence my questions. Some of this may be elementary to you guys but having this knowledge helps me help others and gives me a better understanding how things work.
Thanks for taking the time to entertain my questions.
