Finally my day off!
This has been a busy week at work and a lot of changes happening so quickly I haven’t had a proper chance to use my Adam as I wanted, but now I can give you a proper review of my experience so far.
First of all I want to share some information about me just so you don’t think im a biased person or working for Notion Ink.
My name is Bruno Alexandre, im 27 years old and im from Portugal, I work in a ISP and in a daily base I deal with equipments of every kind and all kind of applications.
I’m a gadget lover, I simply adore every details that a manufacturer places on a equipment and im very picky about build quality and software design, I prefer a practical design to something with a “bling” effect.
I started following the Adam back on CES 2010, Rohan ideas and vision attracted me, his way of thinking was just what I was looking for, a project that isn’t thought to the “elites” and accessible to everyone, the concept he had back then of the Adam was simple but practical and the way he just showed Slashgear a working concept, instead of just a video or something has we've seen recently on others, shown me he wasn’t there to fool anyone and he believed in it and so did I and that’s how I started to follow Notion Ink. Every update afterwards and the open communication he had with the community was something I have never seen before and I always hoped for from other companies, the project started to get even better with the first sketches of the Adam and continuous information he kept revealing about the hardware and the design behind, to a point I could not stand any more not having it and offered to pay ahead for my Adam, even before the Pre-order was known to public. I think when a project has a future, even coming from a company we never heard before is worth investing it is worth to support, and help in anyway possible.
Hardware & Design
As you have all seen the Adam hardware is no big news, every person that likes gadgets have heard of Tegra 2, Pixel Qi and all the other features, the Adam doesn’t bring nothing new in terms of technological innovation but it does bring a innovation in design.
The way it was built is just great, it was thought to be used on a daily base in any situation imaginable, the golden ratio does make a difference! The past 2 days I have used the Adam as a console, media player, work support and as a organizer, it fulfilled every expectation I had, it felt great in any handling position, feels strong being handled in any situation I came to face during my work, there's no crackling sound or protection caps coming off easily, the fingerprints are as bad as in a smartphone, you even cant feel the real weight it has and balances perfectly even by holding with just one hand while typing with the other! Have you ever tried to use the IPAD like that ? It just wobbles on your hand unless you have a case.
My colleagues at work also tried it and they were astonished how a small company from India was able to produce such equipment, they never even heard of Notion Ink or Adam, and they just loved to work with it. One of the biggest praises was the responsiveness of the touch screen and how smooth it was on Canvas to draw a line compared with a smartphone, the processing power and the speed of opening apps, video playback and specially the sniffer, many of them were Android users and they loved it.
Everything looks too perfect doesn’t it, well now its time for the bad parts, the screen protector first of all was awful, as bad as HTC screen protectors for smart-phones all the glare and reflections plus washed out colours made me rage, so I took it off and it felt much better.
The viewing angles of Adam are not very good either, not when compared with my Asus 1005HA LED Backlit screen or the Ipad, but it wasn’t meant to be looked from the side but head-on to be able to read so I take this as a small drawback.
The screen calibration in terms of brightness to contrast ratio is very bad, you notice it more when using at dark environment like the video shows below, but this is something that I think it could be easily fixed if we had the proper tools to mess with it like a normal desktop monitor OSD. (if there’s such tool please tell me since im a android newbie)
Pixel Qi, well this really does feel great, even tho sun is lacking here in Portugal this past days, ive used the Adam on the outside a lot and I love how the pixel qi works, it feels amazing being able to read everything without any problems, unique experience. Indoors even with low light conditions for example in bed with the night stand lamp it was readable or ( you will lol ) in the toilet !
Sound quality was just .. man it was awesome, its louder than the Asus 1005HA and the bass is much better, connected to a sound system is just gives enough juice to make it worth, lacks some equalizer but I think there’s apps out there to do the job.
Camera is one of those things there’s not much to talk about, it's a 3.2 camera like many phones have, the swivel does make it good because you can just point it to what you want, using Google Goggles with it is very cool, the design here helps again, with one hand you can easily stabilize the Adam while the responsiveness of the screen helps out the shooting.
The battery when tested at work was empty after 8 hours of people messing with it, playing watching videos, testing VPN connections, downloading and navigating using the canvas, it was madness the number of fingerprints on the Adam, but it was still very readable. You could only notice the fingerprints on the borders.
Software
Well the software is another issue, the idea behind Eden is good and I love the leaves, but not every application seem to have gone under proper testing or QA, they don’t fit well with each other and don’t respond properly sometimes to the commands you give to it, one of the examples is facebook tool, the cramped look of it and the minimized information makes it really annoying to work with.
The lack of Android Market to be able to get some of the Google Apps made the experience even worst, if Genesis isn’t ready yet then the Android Market should still exist in the meanwhile.
Mail app is very good, I enjoy the UI and how simple it looks while having every feature you need, its also very useful in a job like mine where im constantly receiving emails.
QuickOffice is also great, I work a lot with excel, acrobat, word and having the Adam around is a excellent working tool, I can give support to my colleagues in real time without having to go from one side to the other getting the information they need and taking time which is essential in my job.
The browser, I was kinda of disappointed with the UI from the browser, it felt.. wrong.. hard to explain, but once I got to work with the tabs I just loved how it felt, the idea of placing them like that helps a lot when you are consulting online or trying to get updated with the latest news in the gadget world, it was a fast experience with flash always loading in the websites quickly and with no issues.
The Video Player, had some issues, as you may have noticed on the video above, the sound and video were de-sync, I was using .wmv tried also .mkv and other formats, thought it was a issue with the internal SD Card, used my external one Class 6 and had the same issue, must be codec wise.
In the end I just preferred on having the LauncherPRO as my main screen since I could customize with every widget I wanted, with no limitations whatsoever as you can see on the video below, at least until NI can deliver a better interface or Honeycomb is out.
Conclusion
I'm not an expert reviewer, nor I have experience in reviewing equipments, some of you may not agree with me on some aspects but in the end this was my experience, and I just wanted to share with you all. I enjoy every day with the Adam I have, and it will be my main support at home and works to organize my life.
Do I regret buying the Adam ? No I do not, the Adam is a great tablet.
Would I prefer the Xoom over the Adam ? I wont pay $700 for a barometer, but … I wouldn’t mind having the quality of its screen. Also I had Motorola equipments before and my experience was bad.. not with 1 but more than 4..
Hope you enjoyed.
Thanks for your review bro. I have been looking for a down to earth review for a while. I am probably waiting for the Asus transformer but I would love to try out an Adam and see if it would change my mind. I guess in the end the question is, will it get Honeycomb?

Rohan mentioned that they are working on honeycomb. If NI doesn;t bring it, the adam is pretty close to ASOP android, so I'm sure that the developers here will port it to the adam.
Thats what i hope also.
hmm..intresting review. Friend can you post some more of your experiences with Adam in detail. I would like to see how different application like
1) Rockplayer (for MKV,avi)
2) Laputa ebook reader
3) Google earth
and some good HD Games with motion sensors.
Video Playback
Do you think the video playback de-sync is because of the player?
Meaning that with another player this would not happen?
Good Review

Sure ill post tomorrow probably.
Thanks for this review man. Appreciated. Looking forward to updates on your ongoing use.
Very nice and honest review. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Have you already rooted and installed market with NIH/XDA root packs? Or just using the update released by NI?
Thanks for the review.
I have been using Eden UI on G-Tab for a few days now, and I agree that it takes a little getting used to...and some of the Apps like Mail'd are good. Browser is so-so...and the keyboard could have used "Autoprompts" for words.
Thanks LeviathanPT for the review. I'll wait to pre-order my NI 3G+Pixel QI for the "general public".
Its good to read e-books and Comics?
Thanks
@ zabaknilesh
1) Rockplayer (for MKV,avi) - Still has the same desync issue even with rockplayer
2) Laputa ebook reader - Very cool app, i like the flipping pages transition and its very smooth and accurate, the books can be read very well. Also the thick part of the adam is excelent to grab and makes the reading experience much higher.
3) Google earth - Doesnt launch just crashes
4) Some good HD Games with motion sensors. - Is there any free games i could try ?
@tokyobreeze
Yes i have rooted using NIH since genesis isnt out and i dont want a limited (by software) equipment .
@SimonCt
Yeah reading e-books is awsome, comics is something i havent tried as a appbut ive been at some comic websites and its very cool.
Try jjComics Viewer if you can, The main use for me is read e-books and comics....
For ebooks im using Aldiko, that can be conected with Calibre
Thanks for your review. Very informative!
thanks
Thanks for this usefull review!
Very good review!
Did you try to re-load google earth and still crash?
Edit:
I see they got it working on the Viewsonic over here.

Have you been able to use a browser as the Skyfire with flash on it??
Hey guys I have made a review from my new adam with pixel qi! I also added a lot of pictures and two videos (showing eden, hardware, pixel qi outside, also made a comparison from screens of galaxy s and macbook pro, ... pictures and videos are on the second page) The review is in german, but pictures and videos can say more than 1000 words

I was beginning to get the Transformer itch earlier this week. I kept thinking about how tired I am of reading my news sites (slashdot) on an iTouch and my ever building animosity towards Apple doesn’t help either. Then I started to consider how the dock could really make this thing exactly what I need for at the motocross track. I’ll be able to log and calculate all sorts of information on my bike’s performance like I would on a netbook and also when I am kicking back in the pits I can watch movies or do various other things. Sixteen hours of battery sweetness pretty much sealed the deal. Yesterday I overnighted the Transformer and now I have about 3 hours on the thing. Since I have no tablet, android, or any smartphone experience: here are my unbiased and uneducated thoughts.
I guess it’d be best to go over the common defects that are everywhere. There is a small amount of light bleed on the bottom of the screen. It is not significant, but it is noticeable on dark screens if you look for it. The speaker imbalance is not present on this tablet. No charging issues to note, yet. Bezel width is very comfortable. It isn't small by many standards but its perfect for my grip, non interrupting of viewable screen space. I have zero issue with the plastic body. It isn't aluminum, granted, but the quality feels plenty sturdy and it bothers me none.
Keeping in mind I only have 3 hours on the Transformer so far, here are some things I really like about the Transformer. The screen image is very crisp. The IPS panel does not disappoint. The Android interface is very sleek, and very smooth, I like it a lot. The built-in GPS and ever advancing Google Maps combo is great and I know it’s going to be extremely useful for me this summer. The background shift while you scroll different screens is pretty slick, I thought. The live backgrounds are cool, I checked out a few galaxy imitating live wallpapers off the market. Touch screen responsiveness is fantastic. Web pages are rendered very crisply and are easy on the eyes even during extended paragraph read-through’s.
And for some things I’m not quite digging: Speaker quality is a definite low. In low lighting the camera pictures are not very good, and the color reproduction is a bit low-end (haven’t tried in good lighting yet). No Netflix client. Application processes seem to build up with no obvious way to end them. All the talk about trojans hitting the Android Market has me fairly reluctant on freely trying apps and games. There is plenty of room for improvement in Polaris Office and I strongly hope that comes.
With everything said so far, it is truly exceeding my expectations. It’s a breeze to work with and I believe it’s going to be fantastic for what I need it for and more. I’m absolutely sure I’m going to start using it for work as well.
I hope this quick new comer’s write up is useful to other’s that are eyeing this gem, just as I was a few days ago. I plan to get my mandatory 10 xda posts in over the next week or so, then you’ll mostly see me in the developer’s section as I begin my own rooted work. See you on the other side

About your issues with the processes, get a task killer for it as there isn't an in built task manager into HC
Look at the reviews or get an antivirus for free apps if you're scared
(I use lookout mobile as it has an inbuilt scanner and locator if you loose the tab)

It's definitely a sweet device. My Nook Color is in it's box awaiting it's new owner
Check out splashtop..awesome. I also like the DLNA feature. I can sit outside and connect to my Seagate network drive and watch a movie(s) I've ripped over the past year. After a long day at work, I like to wind down with some Fruit Ninja baby!

Splashtop is sweet, thanks for the recommendation! I am interested in streaming blurays from my home server to the tablet probably downscaling a bit, there any popular methods of doing this yet? Maybe play on has something,I'll look into that

Hi,
So, are you playing the network drive movies via a desktop, and using the remote desktop to see the video? Or are you streaming the video files directly to your tablet? Are the video files pre-processed for a scaled down resolution?
I'm wondering because the stock video app and one I downloaded (mobo) doesn't seem to support streaming. I have ES Navigator to navigate to a windows SMB share. I can view files on the windows share, but when I try to open a video file, the tablet saids it can't stream - must download the entire file before it'll play.
Sorry to hijack the thread - but MurfsHTC commented on exactly what I wanted to be able to do.
Thanks.

basically I rip my dvds using ripit4me, dvd shrink & dvd decrypter. From there i combine the .vob files into one .vob and then convert them. Initially, I was using Divx and streaming thru the xbox 360. I also experimented with Sothink Converter and Handbrake. Sothink has many conversion options but I prefer handbrake. For some reason the Transformer will not load a .divx , .mp4 Itunes movie(.m4v) or .wmv file thru MyNet. it'll do .mp4 (via Handbrake). In a nutshell, I open MyNet, click on the seagate folder and it streams right to the Transformer. I did try mobo and haven't had much luck either. I use the Seagate GoFlex Net 1TB. Plug into your router, load the software and setup your user account. you can also access the drive thru a web browser. Google Chrome doesn't seem to work. Hope I didn't confuse or rattle on.
Well progress is being made on VLC for Android. That will certainly help.

There is absolutely no need to get a task killer app. Let the OS manage that for you. You could even be slowing down your TF by closing apps. There are posts here (In the ultimate TF guide stickied) that detail why.
One of the best uses so far has been a rather reasonable music playback device, if you have quality headphones for it.
Enjoy the the TF Android adventure, it only gets better. Mine is three weeks old, and I have already taken the plunge and rooted, custom Rom, and overclocked mine.

Brandon,
Glad to hear you're enjoying your Transformer. I know I am.
On the volume issue, there's an app: volume+ $1.44 at Amazon that made all the difference in the world after I did the 3.1 update, when it became lower.
About a week or so ago there was a thread on it, if you want to search for volume+. Seems a lot of people were pleased with it. I know I was, now I can't turn my volume all the way up.
Have fun!

I was going to sell my Nook Color but decided to keep it as I enjoy watching Netflix on it, there's no working Netflix app yet for the TF.
Well a few too many beers tonight at baseball practice, came home and neglected a few steps during my first venture into rooting, ha! Didn't take but 10 mins to fix, but I am now rooted and on the prime rom. Will be checking it out for the next few hours
@Geekbabe: I think I read PlayOn supports Netflix to Android now. Granted you need to run the PlayOn server on a PC on your network, but it's something.
EDIT: Now running Prime on top of the netformer kernel. So fun.
I have owned the samsung galaxy 10.1 for approx 2 weeks. I sold my IPAD 2 to purchase as I have always been a fan of android phones. So far, I find the galaxy to be very unpolished. For example, the screens lag when navigating and apps force close to much. When I scroll up and down on the UI, its not smooth as butter like the IPAD. When I change the screen orientation, its very choppy. The IPAD runs circles around this device. I wish it wasnt the case as I wanted to like it. Even the on screen keyboard is hard to type on. Try copying and pasting a sentence. The arrows you use to drag across the words never line up with what is being clicked. I am not sure how anybody finds this device to be a pleasant experience unless you are in denial and I am not talking about the river. Maybe Ice Cream will fix some of the issues. For now, the tablet serves as a perfect example of what happens when technology is rushed to the market without consideration of quality.
I feel better now.

Take the time to tweak your device with everything available on these forums, it becomes an entirely different device.

Not sure if you are trolling here, but eh, I'm bored so I'll bite.
Those of us who find the Tab to be a pleasant experience must be in denial huh? Don't you think that's a pretty presumptuous and arrogant statement? How do you know what my experience with it has been? Or anyone else's for that matter?
I would usually sit here and try to help you solve your lagginess issue, maybe seeing if you have some sort of rouge process going on or if you are even on the latest firmware. Maybe point you to some of the great custom ROMs the developers here have given us. But, nope. You speak for everyone and everyone must be having the same ****ty experience as you, and if we say we don't we must be lying.
I will tell you though that my experience has been fantastic. The only time I get lag on the homescreen is when I have a live wallpaper up. I've never had any browser lag or lag anywhere else. I have a ton of widgets on my screens too. No lag. Of course though I'm totally lying, but you knew that already right?
I'm finished being sarcastic. Honestly if you aren't happy with the device, go sell it and get an Ipad again. Nobody is stopping you. The Tab is a fantastic product and I would go so far as to say it is the best tablet on the market as of this very moment. But it is not for everybody, especially for people who have no idea what they are doing.
Posting threads like this serves no purpose other than being a troll and drawing the ire of members like myself.

I bought mine a couple weeks back too, and my experiences are similar to yours. I still can't understand how a dual core device can be this laggy! I'm hoping its all due to the Samsung bloatware, so I'm going to load up a custom ROM over the weekend and see how that goes... you should try it too
I really like the additional screen space coming from a 4.2" Xperia Arc, and Honeycomb is a lot zippier now than it was back in April when I had the Xoom for a couple of weeks. I still believe its a better tablet than the iPad2 though. That thing seems so zippy because all it is is a magnified iPhone. There's almost nothing running in the background which gives it the appearance of being a lot quicker and better battery life. Load it up with widgets and lets compare them then.
My biggest problem though, is the lack of a good pdf app. I've tried tons of them and they are all really slow to load, very jerky pinch to zoom, and slow scrolling. Hope this improves with ICS
And to the poster above this, I don't get why you even bothered posting if you're going to be so incredibly unhelpful

Lance,
I have watched my brother in law's ipad closely, and you are right. It is faster and more responsive (once tweaked) than my SGT was out of the box. However, the others are right too.
I have rooted and tweaked my SGT and it now makes my ios friends raise their eyebrows. You happily partied all over your ipad, making many changes suggested on user sites like this one. Now you need to do the same with your SGT. If you are unable or unwilling to do that, you are not an idiot or a molester of small animals, you are just one of those people that the ipad was designed for. So get another one, and enjoy it.
I prefer my Android gadgets, because they are more flexible. I am not locked into iTunes, and I have access to my 650GB music library that is not as compressed as AAC. I have a FREE SDK that works rather well, when i want to write my own apps. There are a few paid apps that I depend upon for day to day stuff, just like I would for iOs devices. For me, and many of the others in this form, that is what they want.
Sent from a distant planet with the aid of my towel.

When I change the screen orientation, its very choppy. The IPAD runs circles around this device. I wish it wasnt the case as I wanted to like it. Even the on screen keyboard is hard to type on. I understand how you feel, and I felt the same way when I first handled the SGT 8.9 the UI lag was horrendous .. I felt the product manager of the device should be sacked (or worse done to him) for ever allowing such a device out the door in such state. To make matters worse for me, there was an ipad close by and the UI flow was like watching man utd beat arsenal 8-2 .. I promptly returned the device.
However my opinion has since change since coming here lots of people have filled me in with some tweaks and work around which resolves most of the laggy issue. (You can check out the SGT 8.9 Q & A section its a sticky under this section for people experience with the device)
First of if you can't be bothered to root your device, try the ADW launcher ex, everyone who tried that said its greatly improves the performance and eliminates the lag issue.
You can also if you are feeling adventurous root the device. And install some of the numerous roms around.
just try and take advantage of the open nature and make it yours. Soon ipad owners would be looking at your tab and feeling the envy.
Just my 2 cents

Please go get your ipad back dude. I have none of the issues you speak of. This thread is a total waste. I don't even believe you own a tab.
By saying "you like Android phones" I'm assuming you mean in comparison to the iPhone. Most of the same issues you’re experiencing in an Android vs. iPad tablet comparison apply to a phone comparison also so your statement's kind of confusing.
iOS is so "buttery smooth" because it's locked down like a prison with Apple exerting Orwellian control over the entire eco-system. I bought my G-Tab and paid more than an equivalent iPad because, for what I do, the collection of individual apps works better than the homogenous equivalents on the iPad. And I did that knowing the iPad had a better display and that the UI and navigation were smoother and more mature.
This forum is fascinating because of the disparity in experiences everyone has. I've had two G-Tab's (Wi-Fi and 3G) and never had a force close on either and I have over 50 apps installed. There's occasional stutter and lagginess but I'd say it appears (for me) less than 5% of the time. One huge difference between iOS and Android is that Android, with its limitless ability to be tweaked, can get hosed by people using badly written apps and the use of memory managers, task killers, battery monitors and the like. Every XDA forum I participate in has people *****ing about some function being hosed and then go on to elaborate about all the crap they've done to their device and ****ty low-rent apps they're using. And they don’t understand why their phone’s getting crappy battery life and has tons of issues no one else seems to be experiencing. I guess freedom comes at a price and it can be abused.
I've had a G-Tab in one form or another since August and have been really satisfied with it. I took my new 3G version on a trip over the weekend and it performed flawlessly and got fantastic battery life with 3G active continuously and download speeds of 8MB in TX (vs. less than 1MB for an iPad). I sat across from someone using an iPad on the flight home last night. The local video he was playing was gorgeous. Compared to mine, his WSJ app looked like crap as did Solitaire and a bunch of other stuff I saw him use. Meanwhile, I was streaming Hulu, HBOGO, and TV shows from my home server using the planes Wi-Fi. I can also play music I have stored on my home server, the Amazon cloud, or from the 2K songs I store locally using my $9.99 Rhapsody monthly subscription. All while reading magazines and newspapers using Next Issue and Press Reader. I’d gladly trade options and versatility for “buttery smooth” any day. iOS is great for a subset of device owners because of its constraints and consistency. But those restrictions are why I chose Android. Android can become smoother through s/w and h/w evolution but iOS will never become more open. Hopefully OP bought his G-Tab somewhere with a liberal return policy so he can return it.

The stuff you speak of is why I have ran Linux exclusively on my PC for close to 5 years now. Yet I think the OP has a point and was just letting out steam. I too was extremely disappointed when I handled the galaxy tab (in my case it was the 8.9) right from boot the experience was horrendous and the UI lagged SOO much it was embarrassing. This first impression was a real turn off for me and I can understand the feeling of someone who gets a device with such awesome hardware only be bugged down with software. Sure you can always improve with tweaks and mods but if android is ever gonna replicate its success on mobile on tablets. Then the out of the box experience most be killer. Having and awesome out of the box experience and ability to further tweak should not be mutually exclusive. The experience I got on my galaxy s2 even with default rom was exquisite. Just breath taking. Even without Modding or installing a custom rom. That's what I expected from honeycomb. Hopefully most of this out of the box issues would be fixed with honeycomb 3.2 and ICS.

I must agree with OP. Its a f****g ambaresment how a product can be released in the state it was when it was in the box. Now after tweaking and rooting and flashing and using it for a couple of months its useable. But it still lags, not all the time , but try installing something form market and then go to homescreen, right then its laggy as hell.
But we all know this by now, so i agree with the rest of you that we have no need for this thread. And if OP just read a little before buying he would have found this info about the tab. Anyways welcome hope you get your tab sorted.

Same experience here.... I've even rooted my tab and it did improve but not as much as I would of liked, this was a month ago though, so i don't know if anything better has comed out. I've thought about getting an iPad but..... I just can't if it can't play flash.... How the hell could you own a tablet and not watch a simple flash video. So if anyone can give me advice on how to make my 10.1 as smooth as some of you have said, then please do tell me how. I love my Gtab but the lag does really bother me enough to have had to remove all my widgets....

Root your tab is only the first step. You need to flash custom rom after you root your tab, then only you can feel the difference.
I just got my tab last week, wifi only version. I can say I'm really satisfied with the performance and I love my tab. The basic steps are:
1. root your tab
2. flash custom rom
That's all you need to do to feel the difference. You can ignore some of the gimmicks, for instance supercharger, overclock kernel and etc that have been mentioned if you have no freaking idea what they are about at the moment. You will pick them up along the way just like I did.
The one tip that everyone here would tell you - READ THE FORUM!
For instance, the first sticky post in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android Development is a good read and good resource to get you started. Here's the link if you have no idea where it is (Seriously?): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171089

I agree with you on most counts, except that I don't have any issues with the onscreen keyboard and don't get force closes. There are some things you can do to improve the user experience (alternate launchers, overclocking etc), however it still won't feel like the iPad.
That being said, there are things you can do with the tablet out of the box which you can't do with an iPad:
- Adobe Flash support
- Emulation apps availability (SNES, DOS, Scumm)
- File / Directory browsing
- UI customization
- Non-market / store applications installation
While I would love the overall UI performance to be on par with the iPad, given a choice between the two I would rather have the above functionality instead. There is also the possibility of Android's UI performance improving in the future with all this functionality retained. In case of Apple, apart from limited UI customization perhaps, the other stuff is just not going to be available ever.
PS: And all that's just out of the box, if you root your device there's some far more interesting stuff you can do with the tablet!

You have probably tried it already, but EZ PDF is pretty good. I am comparing it to GoodReader on the iPad and I don't have any issues with loading / scrolling / flipping / resizing.
Of course, this maybe dependent on the size and content of the PDFs you are using, so YMMV -- I mostly read book-sized documents, mostly text, and it works fine for me.
I recently bought a GalaxyTab and I have to confirm, it is quite laggy - In comparison to an iPad.
There are several things which can drastically improve the situation:
Use ADW Launcher EX
Custom ROM, Like Task650/Phantom Extreme Stock
Overclock (although, this didn't change a lot)
I found that the first two points are the most important. ADW Launcher makes the whole Homescreen and Applauncher absolutely smooth, just like on an iPad. And no, the stock launcher isn't.
It's great how many possibilites we have with Android, but be honest - I'd rather have ICS without any new features, but just great performance increases. Thats why I switched to Windows Phone in the first place - I don't want apple, but I want smooth scrolling, smooth transitions. And now, just because Android has much more possibilites doesn't mean it has the right to be slow and choppy. Take a look at the Windows 8 Developer Preview. My god, this isn't even an ALPHA and boy it's SO SMOOTH, I cried almost when I saw that.
The only reason I bought my Galaxy Tab is, that Microsoft still needs about a year until their first tablets are out - And I hate waiting
So please Google, get your Team together and tell them to START OPTIMIZING.
PS:
ezPDF is quite good - But the UI is horrible, and I miss the feature to insert Pages into a PDF. Mandano seems a lot more polished and faster, but misses a lot of annotation features.
I agree with the original poster. My tab is rooted, custom rom, adw, etc. My wife's ipad is a far smoother experience than this tablet. Would I switch back to the ipad prison? Not in a million years. My tablet does so much more than the ipad. If an example is needed, how about my choice of swype or thumb keyboard.
root your tab and wait for an ICS port... ICS is said to have hardware acceleration. That is the only thing Honeycomb lacks and that is why its not as smooth as the iPad...
OR
Flash a custom ROM such as Overcome 1.2.1 (didnt like 1.2.2 or 1.2.3) or w/e other one suits you and then come back edit the OP with the overall news... don't judge this book by its cover and remember its NOT iOS
A newbie when rooting is involved but i was wondering if you could give me an idea of what tweaks you have made? i'm considering rooting my device but unsure of what i could do to make it better.

Flashing a custom ROM is the big one, will make a huge difference. I am using Task650 & Phantom's "In Paris V4". I also installed pershoot's kernel and overclocked.
The experience
I love my Galaxy Tab in comparison to my previously owned iPad but the reason is simply because I like playing with roms and hacking to get the most of my device. On my iPad, I felt too restricted and forced to use software I didn't like. Yes, some of the apps are better on the iPad and yes, the interface is a bit smoother but it's nowhere near as attractive and it's far too limiting.
A friend of mine equated the iPad experience with being put in a padded room where he can't hurt himself and everything if fluffy and safe feeling. It made me laugh but somewhat sums up the experience. Personally, I'd rather not be spoon fed the experience but would rather create my own and make it about me.
My hope is that ICS will be a significant jump. realistically, Android tablet manufacturers should be trolling these forums for employees who can tweak up their software.. Why they don't do this, one will never know.
Either way, I don't think attacks on the Op are warranted. These forums are here for people to both vent and discuss like the adults we are.
This is not a android vs ios thread!
So I got my note and so far I’m loving the device, big screen, responsive, looks nice. battery is so so but I’m finding myself more than a little disappointed with android. I've rooted my note, not bothering with custom roms just yet, checking out stock performance atm which is rather good.
The issue I have is I cant find anything even remotely interesting to do with it. I was a android fanboy since the G1, it seemed like such an amazing OS and had so much potential but is it just me or does it seem like 3rd party development for it has ground to a halt?
When I moved over to iOS at first I was like, this is **** but then after jailbreaking a whole world opens up to you. It is literally limitless what you can do with it and it is all centralized. Jailbreak apps in one place (cydia) if your a try before you buy or just like apps for free then your find them all with installous, android is still to this day completely decentralized and disorganized it seems.
The play store is awful to navigate and I keep seeing the same apps I saw back in the day (G1 era) in the top lists, new development should of relegated these old apps by now, no matter how good they may be software evolution should of replaced them with something new surely? And the pricing is so much more expensive than the iOS appstore and the apps dont seem as polished and professional
Trying to find root tweaks is like pulling teeth, even on xda. You have to troll through post after post and even when you find something interesting it turns out not to be compatible with your device
I don't know, like I said I'm not trying to start a iOS v Android flame war at all, I've just found myself incredibly disappointed and was wondering what other people thought, who else has seen android evolve and thought along the same lines?
I would imagine a 5.3inch ios would be nice but it don't exist, so i am very happy with my note. ICS still not right but happy enough with GB till samsung get there act together.

Wow, I disagree with almost everything that you've said here.
It is unfair to even start this thread until you have tried custom ROMs, or even explored and tested the limits as to what can be achieved with the device and OS.
I don't understand what you mean by third party development grinding to a halt... If you're referring to apps, I think there are more third party developers showing interest in Android than ever! You have apps being released on both Android and iOS at the same time or sometimes even before iOS nowadays, which was unheard of a year or so ago!
The only bit I do agree with is the fact that it would be great if development was more centralised like Cydia... but then again I do like the idea of Android being such an open platform that anyone can develop/mod and it seems to have no walls, which allows for some amazing work to be done (app development, ROM development, tweaks, etc) and shared through places like XDA.
And the bit about App pricing... My brothers have iOS and I am a former iOS user and I seriously used to feel like a mug for paying so much more for an App that was cheaper or, in some cases, free on Android... Now I just mock my brothers about it!
I have found that Android is getting better and better! iOS is boring... To me, it's just an App launcher. Android is definitely, in my opinion a better operating system offering widgets, more open third party development, no requirement to be tied to any particular companies or software.
ICS is almost perfect on the note, once I run a third party launcher (APEX) and get rid of Touchwiz. I am extremely satisfied right now and I don't think there is any piece of hardware that will convince me to use iOS again.
What is it that you are wanting to do?
You have said you can't find anything interesting to do with it, but it's not clear what you want to do?
Music production, photo editing, programming, something technical, artistic?
Maybe someone can suggest an app that suits your needs, or point you to a forum/site with more info.
In regards to pricing, my understanding with iOS and itunes is that you need to purchase an app for each device. Whereas on Android, you can install an app on as many devices as you have linked to your Google account.
I do agree that iOS is much better for music apps. The audio in Android appears to have been tacked on as an afterthought from what I can gather. From what I've heard, it's not that companies like IK Multimedia don't want to write Android apps, they can't until Google fix some of the audio bugs.
i do mean apps by 3rd party development. and the apps in the play store simply dont stack up quaility wise against iOS.

well thats the thing. when i used my G1 and even xperia, everything was new and interesting but now nothing has changed. you can still only do the same things you could back then.
root
install advanced task manager of some description
install custom kernal/rom to make it go faster
themes
overclock and/or set up underclocking to save battery
set autorun permissions
install cracked apps if wanted
wifi teathering
and well..thats it.
what else is there? im am missing some wealth of knowledge? im not being sarcastic, im really asking if ive missed something? in the time that android has been around pretty much the only constant is google updating it. between the G1 and now very little has changed on the app front.

Has he even tried the new official LPF and/or LPY releases from Sammy?
try flashing those, doing a full wipe through CWM and deleting large files and see if SGN lacks for excitement. lol
And the fanboy crap starts. If you haven't got anything constructive to say then don't say anything at all
Ok so what your all saying is the best thing about android is flashing custom roms? But what do you do once you've done that? What else is there?

I love android over ios but hes right about the apps. The games for Android are trash compared to iOS. I was actually talking about this the othet day with some people and they also agreed android is way better but iOS has all the games.
I've noticed with people on this forum that they just wannabe technical or just call you a fan boy and not admit. The playstore is garbage and had very few games. You'd think by now android would have catched up a lil bit.
Even the free apps for iOS are far greater than most paid apps for android.
Some of these games I'd expect on a flip phone not on a touch screen device with dual core processors and such.

The games selection is fine, do you really need more than what's available???
Btw, try CyanogenMod 9, great ROM. Paranoid Android looks very promising too.
Since most of the gripes seem to be about the quality of the games, why not sell your Note, buy a decent, second-hand iPhone 3GS and get a Nintendo 3DS or PS Vita?
Heh, i still have a. Iphone 4. I guess the lack of competive apps are my main gripe. The OS is fantastic and always has been. But its the apps that makes a portable device now and lets not forget guys that the avg end user proberly has never heard of custom roms unlike the geeks here at xda

The OP has one thing right ,iOS is more centralized ,while android is fragmented .
but think about it for one second ,on one hand you have cydia developing for only 3 or 4 iOS running devices
whereas on the android side we have like 100000+ devices
have you been to the main page of the forums? I double dare you to find your device without searching for it's name.
however my dear friend this is where you show your lack of knowledge ,you want something centralized for Android? How about you flash an AOSP ROM like CM7\CM9? it's the same and shares the same code\features\themes\hacks\bugs across all devices that it supports .
so you see you can get a centralized experience on android if you wish.

i do mean apps by 3rd party development. and the apps in the play store simply dont stack up quaility wise against iOS.
examples:
the biggest games in the play store are gameloft games. its been this way since android first started.

IOS only beats android in games and music apps\accessories ,in productivity ,themes ,reading ,customization apps ,Android wins or gets the same quality.

well thats the thing. when i used my G1 and even xperia, everything was new and interesting but now nothing has changed. you can still only do the same things you could back then.
root
install advanced task manager of some description
install custom kernal/rom to make it go faster
themes
overclock and/or set up underclocking to save battery
set autorun permissions
install cracked apps if wanted
wifi teathering
and well..thats it.
what else is there? im am missing some wealth of knowledge? im not being sarcastic, im really asking if ive missed something? in the time that android has been around pretty much the only constant is google updating it. between the G1 and now very little has changed on the app front.

while you are complaining about the lack of change since the days of G1 ,let me stop you here and ask what has changed in the Iphone since 2007?
it's the same miserable OS that it was on iOS1 ,they just added some of the basic missing features over the years ,let's see:
*added the ability to choose a desktop wallpaper wow even a nokia dumbo from 2000 could do that .
*added the ability to choose sms ringtones ,again any phone from 1990 could do that.
*added folders ,which was available on android and symbian for ever.
*added siri which is just a gimmick of a voice assistant ,again available since the days of s60.
*added notification pull down center ,which is a blatant copy of android's notifications bar.
*copy\paste of text ,big deal ,others had it way before iOS
*added multitasking in iOS4 ,really a "smartphone" without multitasking?
so you see iOS is very very boring ,I really don't know how you can say boring about android when you're using such a static OS.
same UI ,same look ,terrible lack of features and freedom ,you have much more freedom on a non rooted locked bootloader android than you have on a fully jailbroken Iphone.
android has changed much more compared to iOS ,it's UI have changed ,it added new big features like 10.1 flash support ,and face unlock (not very useful but still at least new),visual multitasking ,,playstore changes ,among others.
android was full of features back in the days of G1 ,and it's even more full of features now ,plus more smooth, mature, and stable.
all iOS is doing is play catch up with android features.
ios is limitless after jail breaking...HA thanks for the chuckle.

Not really true about jailbroken iphones being less customizable than stock android but i see what your getting at. Jailbroken iphone can do everything a rooted android can do and more but much, much easier. Its a much more streamlined process. Rooted android theres a learning curve, whereas jailbroken iphone is useable almost instantly.
I really wanted this thread not to be another android v ios thread but i guess theres no getting away from it
.

Do you care to explain this???
Can I have some examples?
My jailbroken iphone couldn't even do half the things a non-rooted stock Android phone could do!
Dude, you're 100% correct about IOS' superior app selection, but to say that a jailbroken iPhone is more capable than a rooted Android? That's so unbelievably wrong that it's downright moronic. I've owned an iPhone from day one and have been jailbreaking it for years and I don't have the slightest idea what you're referring to.
So I was apprehensive about purchasing an Ouya after finding out about the recovery issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2326377&highlight=let+ouya+know
http://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/1380/recovery-mode
But I went ahead and got one from Amazon anyway. Rooted it, running Nova Launcher rather than the Ouya one, Installed the Google Play Store.... XBMC ...
played a few games a bit.
It's not perfect. But I'm loving it anyway.
I just don't wanna brick it, so I haven't tried any of the alternate ROMs. I'd love to throw CM10 on this little cube.
Anyway. ...
If you love your Ouya... this is your thread.

I love it! it works perfectly as a low power media center and the games I run on it work well. I'm just having a hard time making it detect my SD card but i'm almost there...
I personally can't stand the overlay, so when I get the chance (and energy), I'll try to put CM10 on it, at which point I expect I'll be fine with it. The controller is awful though (for me, anyway), so I'm looking forward to connecting some cheap USB hardware once I get back to school to use it as a media server. I require basically nothing else from it.

Its perfect as media server. USB keyboard and mouse work great on it. In the mean time, try blue board.
Also by overlay, I assume you mean the interface itself. You can just install Nova Launcher.

The launcher is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to annoyances: a lot of things I do daily on other devices involve weird workarounds and jumping through "user-friendly" panels. I really don't have a patience with most customized skins, so it's really not worth my time until I can flash CM. As with all things, mileage varies, so take this for what it is.
I personally enjoy the Interface. Coming from an MK808 with a stock Android experience, screwing with the UI using an Airmouse or controller was a pain in the butt. I love the simplicity and being able to just pick what I want and go.
I could see if you are using it more as a media server. But just for playing games (what I purchased it for) the UI is awesome.
The Gamepad leaves a little to be desired for. Really, nothing beats a PS3 gamepad for retro gaming. The OUYA gamepad feels nice, but it feels like a 360 pad... with its iffy circle dpad. The controller responds very well but the dpad makes retro gaming a bit cumbersome. The PS3 is also lighter and just feels right. Fortunately the PS3 pad pairs effortlessly and has become my main go to for EMU's.
Overall I love it. Mine took a factory reset before it saw my USB HDD, but good to go. The Ouya Store is a little cluttered. They have Top Favorites like 5 times and each has duplicate games... so you keep seeing the same ones over and over. Right now, the store is barren, so finding something is easy if you search by categories. This WILL be a problem as it expands.
I'd also like to see some simple categories like Top Ten Downloaded, Most Liked, and Newest Releases... even "Latest Updates" which just shows apps that have been updated. This would be nice since some early versions have bugs. On several occasions I have passed up an app because of issues, then forget about it only to find later it was fixed pretty quickly.
There is a lack of online multiplayer apps. Local Multiplayer Emulators is mostly what I purchased the console for in the first place. And that it does almost flawlessly.
I absolutely LOVE my OUYA! I love the interface and even the controller, even with the less than perfect D-pad. I've had more fun with some of these games than I have on my 360 in a long time. And actually I've played more games for longer since I got my OUYA than all year on my PS3/360/PC (excluding MMO's)

I think this is something they're working on. They actually added a "New Release" category yesterday that made me happy, although I'm not sure how they sort it because some of the new releases were not actually on there. Even then, they need less top 5 lists and more broad categories with SUB categories. I believe 1 level deep should solve a lot of the problems we're currently seeing.
Love my ouya, but have nothing to compare with, i am a pc user.
Bought it for the games and then discovered the emulators. Installed battle city and having the blast with my friend.
Also bought the hocky kickass game and got owned by my little bro :/
So ye, perfectly satisfied with myvpurchase.
And also a big thumb to all the devs, and moders to make it even awesomer
My history and experiences are a bit different but my reactions are similar to everyone else here.
I started messing around with "hacking" game consoles about 10 years ago with an Xbox 1. Pretty quickly became a serious XBMC user.
I actually was only initially interested in the Ouya as a way to get a tiny / silent dedicated XBMC box. The fact that it is a hacker-friendly box that runs Android and is sort of an indie game haven did not hurt at all.
I honestly didn't expect to use it for gaming at all, but I've been surprised to find that that's mostly what I use it for.
The whole "everything is free to try!" model changed the way I found and bought games. The fact that almost all the games are cheap as hell compared to "real" console games doesn't hurt either.
I have done several Kickstarter items in the past, and so I know that the Ouya team is smaller than they should be and has had to solve a lot of unexpected issues along the way, so I am not surprised that a bunch of unsolved issues remain. However, overall I am satisfied with all that it does. There are seriously a bunch of great Ouya games, like TowerFall, Bomb Squad, Hidden In Plain Sight, The Little Crane That Could, etc.
I have been a pretty busy guy in general lately, and so I honestly don't feel like I have the time to play some of these 80+ hour AAA titles that are around right now. In that respect the Ouya has been great. Every aspect of the commitment level from the user is significantly less than other consoles, and I like that.
As others have said, there are some things about the system that bug me, but overall, I can't be bothered with ROMs right now.
It does everything I want already, and the random cool crap you theoretically could maybe do with a ROM doesn't presently overrule my fear that I may brick my Ouya.
At this point I think my laziness also is a big thing. It works well enough as is, so I'm not sufficiently motivated to mess with it yet. Obviously, me browsing this forum means I'm thinking about it though
I am loving my ouya as well! And my roomate who has berated me about my purchase since january, calling ouya an obvious failure, conceded. After having it for 2 days, he stated he is going to pick one up for himself now that they are supposedly available retail. if you went into this thing with reasonable expectations, you will be very happy. if you heard "console" and thought "PS3.5" you are going to be disappointed, but whatever man, you were a fool so GFY.

I love mine. It likes to fight, but I like to fight back. Getting it to function perfectly is a game itself. As far as games, I recommend You Don't Know Jack and Vendetta Online. Good games that work great; vendetta just isn't consistent with what the menus say controls are.

I got it for retro gaming and sideload some better emulators and it works great. Can't wait for better roms tho
At this point I'm unimpressed. It feels like it needed another 6 months in development, especially the UI. The library is also very week. There are a few gems like towerfall, but the vast majority of games don't warrant more than 3 minutes of play.
I was underwhelmed at first but now I have the play store, access to my games, emulators, and another launcher running I love it.
I think I will have to purchase a usb hub and a mouse and keyboard before I am truely happy.

I'm LOVING my Ouya!
Towerfall might be my favorite multiplayer game ever!
My OUYA is amazing. Rooted and CWM already. But still waiting for goog CM port on it)
I still feel burned over the recovery issue - they shouldn't have sold it as open the way they did if they weren't planning on actually living up to that claim....
But....
Overall I'm still extremely happy with mine. The original controllers I got were absolute trash, but they replaced them quickly when I contacted support (thankfully I got mine in late May before they ran out of replacement controllers) and the replacements are fine. The wireless has me wondering if they actually had anyone with any kind of RF experience involved in the design - wifi is horrible and the bluetooth isn't much better. Sitting just 10' from mine the controllers will freak out if I don't sit forward in my seat with a completely unobstructed path between them and the Ouya. The interface isn't great and the Discover section needs a TON of work....but that's software and I'm sure we'll see some major changes there sooner rather than later.
Due to the recovery issue I haven't done much hacking on mine other than root/busybox and a few things like Titanium. But that wasn't my main reason for wanting it - it was what put me over the edge since I figured it was a good price for a Tegra3 board to play with if Ouya tanked....but I was still hoping they'd pull it off and have some decent games. And while the game selection isn't anything to get excited about just yet...it's been getting better and better quicker and quicker and I've had no problem finding games I want to play on it. Heck I've actually bought more games on it than I did for my Wii (the last console I bought) which is mostly due to the fact that while I've bought more games for the Ouya than I did for the Wii I've spent less on games for the Ouya than I did on just one game for the Wii
The main reason I'm happy with it though is because I do believe in the dream and I do love Indie games. And even better having this thing sitting here has finally gotten me to get serious about sinking my teeth into Java and Android development. I cobbled together a few quick and dirty sample apps a few years ago before I even had an android device to run them on (ran them on the emulator and then my wife's phone since she got to upgrade a year before me) but haven't gone any further because while I may be able to sling some code I'm just not that good at making things look nice and my co-workers who are are apple guys who don't want to help me develop for Android. But they're also gamers and are interested in the Ouya so we're finally on the same page and working on some ideas. I was blown away by how easily I was able to get some simple game proof of concepts functional and so was my co-worker. It's been a dream of mine to make my own game for a console since I got my first Atari 2600. I looked into the Wii homebrew scene...but again none of my graphically gifted co-workers had a Wii and weren't interested in doing anything for it so I never got past some quick test code. To finally have a system I can make code for and a friend who's interested in joining forces to make something....it's a dream come true.
Now if I just had more time to play games on it and/or write more code for it
I love this machine! Much better when its Rooted/CWM, its great to have friends over and hookup ps3 controllers to play Smash Bros or play any EMU games, and super portable for travelling.
I'm not already hooked by my Ouya (well almost)
I think it's really a matter of youthness : I'm currently a little disapointed by the quality of the graphics on the games, and to be honest I'm not that fan of graphics
But I can't help to notice the graphics gap between Android mobile games and Ouya games whereas our little square friend pack a very capable GPU (Tegra 3)
I also miss mass player online games which is for me a nice argument for Ouya (I do have friends !)
Again I think the future will be beautifull since Ouya games currently available are essentially from indie enthousiastics who don't have necessary big fund
Finally, I don't regret my Ouya AT ALL, I'm really happy to be a baker
i find it a bit odd how people often emphasize that they use it mainly for emulating the classic consoles.
people could have saved themselves a great bit of money by just buying some no-brand Android device, and even gotten a device that was pre rooted, had official Play store, hardware recovery option 5 full size USB plugs, bluetooth and even SD slot. All for something like half the prize of the OUYA.
At this point i must say i am not to crazy about it. i feel that OUYA have really made an effort in locking down the console rather than living up to their promise of openness. Everything from the OUYA launcher being a walled garden, to no direct access to your own file system, no root access / superuser priviledges, no hardware option for recovery state and no play store access.
i really like the look and also the controller. But i also got this for a silent XBMC dedicated device. i will however wait for a linux based build before that dream come through. i was hoping that i could play and hack around with until then. But without a hardware recovery option, i will just wait for a good Linux based XBMC port instead.
