please make making a tethering app and wifi router a first priority in for the wp7... developers
MOD EDIT: Tethering instructions at post 11 onwards
The chances of this happening without 3rd party socket support is extremely low if not impossible. Until Microsoft allows sockets tethering will have to come from Microsoft themselves.
i though that that the phone would be capable , but that there would be no support or apps unless the cell service requested
That rumor turned out to be false. At launch WP7 will not tether but I'm sure we will see an update within the next couple of months that will add it. Since updates come from Microsoft directly I don't think carriers can block it.
I wouldn't say that carriers can't block it. If you look at the iPhone, it was blocked in the carrier settings on the phone.

Also, the carriers has a way detect you are using the phone as tethering or web-browsing, if your data plan doesn't include tethering, the tethering feature means nothing.
Doing some research to upgrade from my dumb ass x10 (was my in between phone) and found on Optus Australia site that Omnia 7 can be used as a tether, so I'm guessing that they are not blocking it.
But hey who knows till I get this next week bundled with an Xbox Kinect - woot.

There's a 99% chance that the site is wrong. WP7 does not support tethering of any kind right now.

Yes I know wp7 does not support tethering now, but it will.
Optus have decided not to charge for the service like some providers do/will and I like that

I tether occasionally with my ATT Tilt running WM6.5.
I am about to receive my Focus this week, and I am confident that there will be the ability to tether this phone soon. History is on my side. In the meantime, I will pop my sim card into the Tilt if I need to tether.
The iPhone was a locked OS at first, the jailbreaks came soon, as did tethering.
As far as ATT being able to detect when it tethers, I doubt it.
In the past, the theory was they could detect the user agent string for the web browser as "not a mobile browser" but since the WP7 browser is a full browser, I see it as a simple matter for the tethering app to replace the user agent string on the fly, so the data stream appears to be for the bundled browser and not a desktop browser. Your laptop will browser will give you a normal experience on each page.
ATT has a money clamp on the data usage anyway, so I doubt they really care that much since as you would hit the 5 GB limit of the laptop tethering plan, you would have paid $65 ($25 for 2GB+$10 for 1GB+$10 for 1GB+$10 for 1GB). They have lost nothing.
How to use USB tethering on the Focus
Well I guess Optus weren't wrong - bit of a fiddly work-around - but hey it works.

Awesome news, if it works. Can anyone who has tested this confirm that it's working and also if you are still able to use the phone to receive texts/calls/etc? Thanks, and good find!
Can someone who's done this post the usb drivers that get downloaded? I'm running on windows server 2008 R2 and suspect that it's not pulling them down because of this. I switched the phone to tethering mode, but when it connects and tries to add the driver it doesn't pull anything down.
Hello,
Just got my Nexus 4 in earlier today and been playing with it all day (got it Like New condition on Ebay). I've updated to the latest version of Android 4.2.2 Kitkat OTA and everything is running smooth as butter except...
I have an LG 55" Smart TV with Wireless Display and was hoping to "Miracast" my phone to the TV. So I go into the TV options and have it search for the device... then go into my phone, and into "Cast Screen" under settings, and indeed they see eachother. So the TV "asks" the phone if its OK to connect, and then on my phone I get the option to confirm its OK, which of course I do... then the TV shows that its trying to connect for a while and nothing happens on my phone. Then...my phone loses all connection to the internet. I mean all the bars are there, wifi is on etc... but whenever I try to open a webpage in Chrome, Youtube, netflix etc its like I'm not connected to the internet. The only way to fix it is to either reboot, or go into airplane mode then back.
I would really love some help getting Miracast to work! Thank you!!!
It doesn't work on any 4.4.x roms I know of (not sure if it works on stock) I got it to work by dual booting a 4.2.2 rom and using that and I works like a charm on my lg smart tv

Sprint Galaxy 4S
I use Sprint's Hotspot on my unrooted phone to view a Java operated stock market viewer on my laptop (Yahoo Market Tracker). The program worked fine until I switched from Galaxy 2s to 4s. The program runs fine through cable broadband wi-fi at home on two laptops. I have identical laptop security settings for the home wifi and the Sprint HotSpot. There has always been enough bandwith to run the program from hotspot before. Sprint will not help me with the problem, and refuses to tell me what the issue is. Is it likely to be security settings on the phone itself?
If so, any help accessing and changing these setting would be greatly appreciated.
Do you PAY for Sprint's hotspot service?
Yes

Cool. If you are paying for the HotSot service, on an unrooted/unmodifed device, Sprint IS responsible for your service(s) or lack of.
Only issue I would see would be that your laptop is blocking something from the tether/hotspot. Do you have a third party firewall/AV blocking something? Maybe try disabling it for a moment and see if that works.
You may need to add specific DNS to your laptop (to get around Sprints) like Googles (8.8.8.8). But since Sprint and Yahoo are friendly I don't know if that would make a difference.
Good luck.
Thanks!
This should give me more leverage in negotiating with sprint. On the laptop (windows 8.1), the security settings are identical for the hotspot and my home broadband wifi (and I have tried with all security off). Since the program ran fine under the hotspot on galaxy s2, I was thinking something was blocking the program within the S4 itself such as a router setting or some other obnoxious ware Sprint puts on the phone.

Hello all,
I have a bit of a problem that I'm hoping someone a little more tech savvy than I can help me with.
I have an 8000 Series Samsung Smart Tv and a GS4 1337m on Roger's running Maple Leaf (GoldenEye's Canadian Variant)
Whenever I try to enable the screen mirroring I get a "Failed to connect" message.
To be thorough the steps I go through are as follows.
On TV:
Settings, Network, Allshare Cast Settings, Screen Mirroring. Which puts the TV into the state ready to accept the connection.
On Phone:
Drop down menu, Screen mirroring. It finds my TV and the two of them seem to start talking to each other, as the TV lista my phone by name as an incoming connection. Then the phone just seems to abort part way through and says "Failed".
Any thoughts?
To be clear, streaming for every other app works fine, even tossing pics from the gallery. It's only when I try to mirror the phone screen itself.
Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance guys.

Hey Everyone,
I've been doing a ton of research to jump into a new Android Headunit. I have a 2016 WRX and I'm a big fan of the Seicane since the screen is so much larger than an Android Auto unit and actually looks OEM. However, it seems that just because it's an Android headunit that it's not necessarily Android Auto.
My commute is about an hour & 15 minutes each way, and I usually use Google Maps and my phone plugged in for power. I don't mind not having a native Android Auto interface, but I really don't want to have to turn on my hotspot every time I enter the car. Is there a way to just plug in the phone and the headunit utilize the data like an OEM Android Auto unit does? Are there any other alternatives? My phone is a work phone so rooting is not an option.
Thanks in advance!
I use an app called Hotspot Automatic. It turns on the hotspot when it connects to Bluetooth in the car. It doesn't work with all devices so you will need to give a try first.

Tasker is your friend...
Is a really easy thing to realize to get Tethering activated... and it works with really each phone.

Tasker would not work when I had a Galaxy S7 Edge or Galaxy S8. It doesn't seem to be able to get around AT&T devices that restrict auto enabling tethering. I have heard Verizon devices have had similar issues.
I switched to a non AT&T device and no more issues. I tried out the Hotspot Automatic program before getting the non AT&T device and I like the simplicity of it.

hmmm.... okay, you won´t have these restrictions on EU phones.
The fact I use Tasker is, that I have a lot of tasks running for different things and I don´t like to have tons of apps for each single thing to do.

I agree that Tasker is a great solution. I just couldn't use it for what I needed in the past so I continued using the hotspot app when I bought a non carrier device.
