[HELP] Internal SD Card "Unsupported". Cannot access files. - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have a S5 klte with Samsung SD card formatted as Internal Storage.
Yesterday, I thought I will update my Slim rom 0.6 to the newest version 1.3. After flashing the rom, wiping cache and dalvik cache phone stuck on boot animation. Now, the stupid thing I've done was to push "Fix permissions" in TWRP recovery. After that, I was able to boot my phone, but it lacked most of the apps which were installed previously, none of the google services would work, I could see all the pictures/videos in my gallery, however. When I tried to backup those to my PC, I could see only a small part of it. Tried flashing previous rom, different gaps, wiping cache - nothing.
Then, I thought, I will do a regular wipe, since I didn't cared much about lost apps. From the experience I knew, that wiping does not touch media stored in internal storage. So I wiped my phone and restarted (with old slim 0.6 flashed before).
Now the phone works great, but there is HUGE problem. All internal storage is gone including pictures and videos and Samsung card, which was formatted as internal storage, now says "Unsupported card" and asks me to format it either to external or internal.
What could I do? Is there any way to "re-link" the internal card so that I could see its contents? Or I should use some file recovery software and see what I can get?
Thank you in advance for the help!

Did you try popping out your SD card out of your phone and using an SD card reader to get data off it onto a pc
Sent from my iPhone 4s using Tapatalk I also own a g900v

Well, I am using Mac for the moment, so when I try to connect sd card to it the notification pops up, that drive is not accessible, or something similar.
Tomorrow I will be able to try it on PC, but I believe nothing will change. The biggest problem is that sd card is formatted as internal storage and linked with phone's internal storage. I do not know these inner mechanics, but I believe that I need to somehow recreate that link.

Hmm your probably right good luck trying to fix it
Sent from my iPhone 4s using Tapatalk I also own a g900v

Sadly, there is not much of info due to complexity of this issue. Still waiting for at least some hints what should I do...
UPDATE: PC does not respond to the sd card at all, there is no sound, no drive, nothing.

No longer "solved" : "Damaged SD Card" with a new JB ROM

I have swapped to this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912740
and suddenly it's reporting that my SD card is damaged. I have been using this card for a long time through multiple ROMs without any issues. Looking at the thread, I'm not finding anyone with my problem so far, so it could be something more general.
I did a clean install (wiped all user data and everything). Reformatted the card - no luck. Tried another SD card (an old 1GB micro SD) - still keeps saying "SD Card is Damaged". When I say "OK" and tell the ROM to format it, nothing happens--I get the SD Damaged message back.
Not sure if my ROM installed poorly or I'm having some odd compatibility issues.
Tried formatting from Clockwork mod too - formats successfully, but upon entering the ROM, I get the "Damaged SD" error.

The ROM is installed to NAND with the ODEX thing included (built into the ROM installer options). Just did another factory reset / data clear / reformat / ROM reinstall - still showing that SD card is damaged =/ I guess it's something in the ROM, as it's never been an issue before.
Edit: Solved.. I formatted the SD card in my friend's phone, which has a different version of a CM ROM. Works fine in mine now... odd...
Another SD "broke"
Ok, so now we installed an Android ROM onto the other phone (Paranoid Android for HD2 this time - NAND installation), and the Damaged SD card message is popping up again - with another SD card... that was also working perfectly fine through multiple other ROMs before (is this something JB ROMs seem to break?.. Hard to believe it's a coincidence).
So now I can't fix this second SD card. Tried formatting on my computer - no luck. Formatted in Clockwork recovery - no luck. Trying to format it inside the ROM gives a message that the system is analyzing the card to format it, then nothing happens, and the "Damaged SD" message pops up again... so basically it's not getting formatted. This is on both phones now. I was able to fix the first SD card on an older version of an ICS Android ROM, but as that ROM is no longer installed (bugged out completely, hence trying new ROMs now), both of our phones can't format my card.
Any other way to do this? I really don't understand why the card gets messed up for these JB ROMs, and don't know how to fix it at this point.
For completeness, I did run chkdisk on the card, and it's operating fine, no errors. It works just fine connected as USB storage through MAGLDR, I can install ROMs from it and everything. It just appears corrupted as soon as I enter my Android ROMs.
Use Windows on pc and do slow full format

[Q] Frustrating SD Card issue - not the normal

Note - this is not the "Damaged SD card Issue" i never received ths warning.
Up until last night, my New S4 was running great with my Samsung 64gb sd card...had a ton of programs etc. The thing is, the card was also encrypted by company security policy. Prior to flashing to a new rom i tried to decrypt the card, the the system credientials were locked and wouldn't let me (after removing accounts etc). I don't want to talk about ways i could have decrypted - let's just say i went into the flash with an encrypted card.
Wiped cache, delvik cache, and factory reset
now i don't believe this cleans the internal (SD or storage) as this is where i flashed from
Everything flashed successfully and the new rom is up and running.
Except now i can't access my SD card on my Galaxy. Mounting only results in the device saying "it's safe for removal". I can't even format on this device, but i can on a galaxy s3 and my laptop. And the card works in all those places just fine. The card won't even mount in CWM....EVERY time I insert the card, I'm just told the card being checked for errors and immediately goes to "card is safe for removal"
anyone know what might be going on? This is driving me nuts here!
Just tried reflashing again, this time clearing internal memory too...installing rom from a diffetent external SD card and still no luck. Same result as above.
Again SD card works in all other devices other than s4.
Also note I am using a T MO rom on att device with new kernal. I don't think that should matter though

Had this issue. I used my 64gb card with the stock rom. I flashed CM10.1 this morning onto it and CM10.1 wouldn't read it. Took it out, put it in a SD card adapter and read it on my laptop, copied all contents off. Put it back in my S4, formatted it. It worked. Put card back in laptop, copied content over, worked fine on the S4.
It's a formatting issue. Just back up your data via another device, then format the card in your S4 and youll be fine.
Problem is I can't get s4 to the point where it will format the card. After I attempt to mount it...keeps reverting back to ready to remove message...as if it doesn't want to know the card is there.

Well. Try formatting it in another system. Take it out copy your files off, then format it. (Windows My Computer, right click the flash card, Format). Mac, Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility Select the flash drive, go to erase. Linux, use Gparted. Install via sudo apt-get install gparted if your on a ubuntu/debian based distro.. Then try it in your S4 and see what happens. Maybe the partition got messed up and the S4 is goofing up when it goes to read it, or check partition table or something in a way where other systems might be okay with it still.

Thanks for the input. I did try as you recommended. Even going so far as to format in a galaxy s3- successfully ....a digital camera - successfully ...and my computer systems successfully....all able to read write and format.....galaxy s4 just doesn't seem to care....

Interesting. Well eliminated anything with the card itself or formating.
Have you tried any other microSD's in your S4?
If not I suggest trying that and see what's going on.
If it DOES work then it might be a issue with the card. If it doesn't, something with your S4.
It's either hardware (the microSD card reader is bad somehow) or software (Something in your ROM is messed up). If you want to troubleshoot it to the fullest extent you can do a full factory restore, wiping your phone completely, and loading stock firmware again and wiping \Data partition, as well as cache and see what happens. That would eliminate any software issue.
I have tried other cards and they all work fine. S4 can do everything with these cards. Format...mount...unmount....etc...
Just seems to be this one card in this one device....both card and device work well outside of each other...

There's your problem then. That brand card or something, or that particular card may have something funny going on with it.
I had the same exact thing happen to me yesterday. I was also having issues with my WiFi not working either.
I ended up doing a complete wipe of my S4 in cwm, Odin to stock, updating my software via settings and re-rooting. After doing that my WiFi worked and it would read the 64GB SD card I had.
Luckily, I had a nandroid backup from just a few days prior I was able to revert back to.

Aokp/aosp/cm roms/kernels don't support the exfat format.. So format the SD card to FAT32 to fix the issue check this out.. Lots of threads on this.

Your 64gb sd card is Exfat and a lot of kernels and roms do not support this. Format it to Fat32 and all should be good. But backup everything on your sd card before you do it
don't know how far you have gotten on this, but
i usually use sdformatter from web. i do a "full erase on", takes awhile, but cleans card well and always solved any card issues i had--
Final Solution Atrix 4g to the rescue
Finally put the SD card in my old atrix 4G and reformatted twice and now the card works!
Can't for the life of me figure out why nothing else could format the car sufficiently.
I struggled with this as well just now with my SanDisk 64gb card on my Verizon s4 running Jelly Beans... Solution was to format the card fat32. I did this by executing this file from the command line and issuing 'fat32format x:' after mounting the card obviously. Here is the file fat32format.exe It works perfect now Note: Don't format the card again on your phone or it will end up exFat and the phone will reject the card again.

[Q] LINK2SD Broke efs on my SM-G900H

A- I recently installed Link2SD on My rooted Galaxy S5 (SM-G900H) and everything seemed ok. The app asked me to reboot my phone, when I did my phone stuck on the SAMSUNG Logo screen and FACTORY RESET/Wipe data didn't work. I even tried emergency recovery with no luck (Error mounting efs). I fixed the efs issue and I re-installed the stock ROM and re-Rooted my device.
I didn't re-install Link2SD anymore because I'm afraid it may break my phone.
1- What is the maximum size of the ext2 partition?
2- Does it work on SM-G900H without issues?
B- Despite what they say about Kitkat and that you cannot move your apps to SD card, I have the option on my phone to move (movable apps) to SD card and that's good enough for me. I purchased a SANDISK Extreme plus 64 GB SD card (Which is formatted in exFAT by default). When I move apps to SD and reboot my phone, all the apps on SD disappear and my phone starts acting weird and apps crashes. Maybe it's because of exFAT but I'm sure the SD card is fine and not broken. That's why I wanted to try Link2SD and see it it solves the problem.
Have anyone faced theses issues? Anyone know a solution for these problems? I appreciate any help.
Bump... Me too!

Yes, I am having a very similar problem and I also have the 64GB SanDisk Extreme and SM-G900H and rooted.
Did you ever find a resolution?
My extSD seems to come and go. The last time I uninstalled the last 2 apps and it was good for 24 hours. Put I just pulled it off the charger and it started acting up again.
I cleaned the contacts, chkdsk'd it on my PC (everything reads fine) and rebooted a few times but no luck.
This post had some good recommendations but cleaning contacts, etc. didn't help me.
I was going to try an OTA update but it seems that I need to un-root first. That's my next step -- starting over.
Try FAT32

You SD card is formatted with exFAT? Try formatting it with FAT32. I didn't try it yet because I can't use my phone since my EFS partitions are gone and my IMEI code changed to 004999.... (Generic IMEI code).
Let me know if this solves your problem.

64GB will for sure need to be exFat -- FAT32 can't access all the space.
This is a good utility to reformat and fix it OR you can use the cmd level commands.
For me, I am able to use it intermittently now -- seems like it will work for hours, even days, then have a problem when I pull it off the charger. Of course, I woke up this morning and it wasn't working AGAIN.
I am on the phone now with Samsung tech support to see if there is a log somewhere that can give me more information about what is exactly failing. I did use this same card in 2 other Galaxy S5's (AT&T and T-Mobile versions) with no problem. Maybe I ruined the card when I had it in my wallet?
FAT32 - I was wrong.

I was wrong. FAT32 CAN access all the space. I reformatted with FAT32 using the fat32format program and still have the same problems.
Furthermore, it happens with and without root -- I've reflashed a million times now.
At this point, I think that I just got a bad card reader in my unit because the card went off just by tilting the phone sideways last night (clean install, no root, no apps).
Good luck to the original poster.

TWRP not reading my external sdcard/cannot find TWRP backups on external sdcard

I recently got an external sdcard for my MXPE, and I immediately transferred my internal storage to it, and the two TWRP backups that I had. Then, when I am in TWRP I cannot get TWRP to read my external sdcard. I tried to mount it, but it won't let me check the box next to it. Then, in my file manager on my phone, I cannot see my TWRP backups on my external sdcard, but I know they are there because my phone says that the external sdcard has 13 gb taken up. I would really like to see those backups again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: i switched roms and reformatted my sdcard, which ended up working and fixing my issue
Didja format the card IN the phone via storage before you transfered stuff? I have had the problem in the past by that...

Yeah that's what i did. Is there any way to get my nandroid backups back?
Alot of PPL having this problem including me. It's something with 6.0 MM. Look at other posts, many asking the same thing. Don't know what to do, I need to figure out tho. If anyone figures out exactly what to do to fix this problem, please include it here.
There in a temporary way to do it. You can reformat to portable storage which then will then let you see what you should, but the problem with that, when you reformat to portable or internal, its erases the card each time, so each thing you'd do this, you have to back everything up, reformat, and copy it all back after you were done, huge hassle

G4 Plus w/ LineageOS stuck at booting screen

So I installed LineageOS about 4 months ago or so and out of nowhere the phone just turned itself off and wouldn't boot, it goes past the motorola screen into the LineageOS booting screen, and it just keeps loading and loading, I can access TWRP, and I tried installing an older version of LineageOS and wiping the cache and dalvik, that seemed to have worked but the home button wouldn't work and some core system thing kept crashing and warning me on the screen and I decided to reboot, and now I'm stuck at the booting screen loading forever again, basically I'm trying to NOT wipe the phone data UNLESS I'm able to backup my apps with titanium backup or something like that; so since I managed to make it boot once maybe it ain't as bad as I see it, so yeah here hoping to get some options to fix it.

With titanium backup its possible to restore data from a nandroid backup.
Did you installed exactly the same rom over the actual one again? Did you tried wipe cache and art?
Make a backup of system, data, boot and save it to your computer just in case.

When the phone got stuck at the loading screen I tried installing an old LineageOS rom, that initiated with the errors I mentioned, and when I did that I wiped the cache and dalvik/art cache as well, and now I've tried deleting them again many times and it doesn't seem to work, and quick question, the nandroid backup is basically doing a backup of what you told me, system, data and boot, right? Would that save all apps and their data, let's say, a progress in a game, or all settings exactly like I left them on an app.
Also I don't know if it's me, but I keep deleting some data from my SD card and it just keeps reappears again, even tho I'm seeing them getting deleted, same with pasting new stuff on my SD card, I'm doing all this thro my PC with ADB, tho pasting and deleting stuff on the internal storage works just fine.
Yes, a nandroid backup from your system/data partition saves all your additional apps with settings.

Yeah it says my SD card is on "Read-only" and can't complete the backup, according to some thread it's a FAT error and I gotta mount the SD card on my PC and fix the error thro windows, but I have no SD card reader, meanwhile I'll wait for other answers until I find an SD card reader.
The issue was most likely caused by updating LineageOS many times over and over again eventually causing a corruption, that and my micro SD dying and just being read only made it worst, so yeah, I'd recommend erasing cache, dalvik and system every few months to update LineageOS, well I wouldn't take this that seriously, since I don't really know that much, but yeah, phone is working just fine now, just installed everything from scratch and google helped me restore my apps.

The isssue you are talking about(sd read only mode). Im facing this problem and have done each and every method possible to give write access to sd card.
Well i can access the data(like can put anything i want in it) but can't modify it(copy, move, delete and even format). I looked for way arounds and tried my own method(even risked the data on sd) but no good comes out of it.
Im using rr and not lineage so we are on different boats in the same river.
If you get any solution pls inform me ans ill try it.

Some sdcards become read only over time, had also 2 of them which had those issues. See reviews on Amazon. It's a known problem of the SD card itself. Try to format your card with pc and check if it's writable again, otherwise it's dead.

Thanks for the concern and yeah i know that it is a problem with sd cards.
The thing i was saying that i literally tried each and every method formatting from pc to even twrp. I even used cmd for it and as a out come non of them work.
Well sd card is not dead. I can move, copy thing in it the problem comes after that. I cant delete or then move from sd card to other location. Its like read only compact disk(it will clear the idea what im talking about). My sd card is working as a read only cd does.

That's what I mean: they become read only. Search on Google.
I had the same issue. I tried reinstalling Linage OS, clearing the cache, etc. But what finally resolved it was clearing the data. So the issue was corrupted data that was keeping the device from booting.
